‘Jewish lobby’ deceived Putin – Lukashenko

Moscow and Kiev were on the verge of a peace deal in early 2022 before the agreement was derailed, the Belarusian president has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin was deceived into withdrawing troops from near Kiev in 2022 by forces claiming to represent Vladimir Zelensky’s willingness to seek peace, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said.

Speaking in an interview with Al Arabiya, Lukashenko said the conflict could have ended quickly in its early stages, when Moscow’s forces were near the Ukrainian capital.

“At the time, not only I, but everyone in the world understood that the war would end quickly with a Russian victory. This was primarily because the Russians were in Kiev,” the Belarusian leader said, according to BelTA.

However, Lukashenko claimed that “certain politicians and forces” then asked Putin to stop, pull troops back from Kiev, and conclude a peace agreement. “Before that withdrawal, everyone understood that Ukraine’s days were numbered.”

The Belarusian president argued that Moscow had been acting on what appeared to be a genuine opportunity to reach a settlement, adding: “Judge for yourselves who was right and who was wrong in this matter.”

“Once again, probably, these forces deceived him. It was the Vatican. And, surprisingly, the Jewish lobby, the Israelis,” Lukashenko said. “They said on behalf of Zelensky: that’s it, we are moving toward peace, we agree. And others as well.”

It was not immediately clear what exactly Lukashenko meant by the “Jewish lobby.” In the early days of the conflict, then-Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett acted as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev, meeting Putin in Moscow and holding multiple phone calls with Zelensky. Media reports at the time claimed that Bennett had urged Zelensky to accept Moscow’s terms.

St. Helens city administrator presumed dead as search transitions to recovery effort==

No foul play suspected after John Walsh fell into the Columbia River late Saturday, city staff said in a statement.

Two days after St. Helens’ top staffer went missing after falling into the Columbia River, local officials said Monday that the search for city administrator John Walsh had transitioned to a recovery effort. He is presumed dead.

Officers with the St. Helens Police Department and deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office now plan a wider search, on both sides of the river, looking for his remains.

Walsh reportedly fell into the river near the city’s docks on Saturday, at roughly 10:30 p.m. Details about his fall into the water remain scarce, but Walsh was not seen returning to the surface.

Communications Manager Crystal King wrote in a press release that law enforcement doesn’t suspect foul play.

King wrote that Walsh “accidentally fell into the water.”

“We are grieving alongside his family right now,” King wrote. “There have been moments of tears and moments of laughter and all the mixed emotions that come with the loss of someone you have known for so long.”

The news followed a multi-day search effort.

A person reportedly called police soon after Walsh fell in the river on Saturday, kickstarting a search that lasted until about 3:30 a.m.

The search resumed on Sunday again, but to no avail.

City leaders held an emergency meeting Sunday night where they named the city’s finance director, Gloria Butsch, as his interim replacement.

“Search efforts were initially concentrated around the St. Helens City docks area,” King wrote in her statement. “In addition to ground and boat teams, law enforcement has utilized an aerial drone, underwater ROV, and a dive team in the search for Walsh.”

City officials plan to set up a memorial for Walsh near Columbia View Park, overlooking the river, King said.

“We understand that John was more than just a City Administrator,” said St. Helens Mayor Jennifer Massey. “He and his family live here and are involved as community members. They have touched many people’s lives, and we hope that providing this tribute location is a way for the St. Helens community to come together, grieve together, and begin to heal.”

Jerry Cole, the mayor of neighboring city Rainier, told OPB that Walsh was well-liked in the community and seemed to have a very positive attitude in life.

“He was genuinely one of those guys. I never heard him say anything bad about somebody,” Cole said. “He always seemed happy and tried to make a difference.”

St. Helens City Hall will be closed to the public for the rest of the week, King said, except for a scheduled St. Helens City Council meeting on Wednesday and for hearings at St. Helens Municipal Court on Thursday morning.

Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), on Monday welcomed the emerging U.S.-Iran understanding aimed at ending hostilities while asserting that peace poses a greater threat to the survival of the Islamic Republic than military confrontation.

Rajavi said the NCRI supports efforts to end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of the Iranian people.

“The Iranian Resistance, which for nearly five decades has sought freedom and peace, and has, through 133 revelations in the past 35 years, acted as the most important barrier in preventing the ruling theocracy from acquiring the bomb, welcomes any understanding to end the war and the suffering of the Iranian people,” Rajavi said in a statement.

“In Iran, no one except the remnants of the mullahs and the Shah has wanted or wants war,” she added.

Rajavi’s remarks came one day after President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran had reached a memorandum of understanding establishing a 60-day framework for negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program while paving the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. The agreement is expected to be formally signed Friday in Switzerland.

Rajavi said the regime’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, support for terrorist proxies, and efforts to destabilize the Middle East are central pillars of its strategy for preserving clerical rule.

“The effort to produce nuclear weapons, warmongering, and meddling in the countries of the region are part of the survival strategy of the religious fascism ruling Iran, and it will not abandon them as long as it can,” Rajavi said.

The NCRI reported that Iran carried out more than 2,200 executions in 2025, describing it as the bloodiest year of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s rule, while warning that political prisoners, dissidents, and anti-regime activists continue to face the threat of execution and severe repression.

The opposition coalition has argued that Tehran has increasingly relied on executions and intimidation as it confronts mounting economic pressures, domestic unrest, and growing challenges to its rule.

Rajavi’s statement also comes days before a major NCRI-backed gathering scheduled for Saturday in Paris, where organizers say tens of thousands of Iranian expatriates and supporters from across Europe and North America are expected to call for an end to political executions and express support for a democratic republic in Iran.

According to organizers, the event is expected to draw lawmakers, former heads of state, diplomats, military officials, human rights advocates, and other international figures from across Europe and North America.
