Every single person was masked. I asked why and three different people said "to protect our comrades". I left in bewilderment before being able to even take a look at any of the literature. I was told it is a mask only event. How do you call yourself an anarchist?? Good grief.

Yes a book fair, in ottawa. It said masked event on the poster (which I hadn't noticed at first)

There was Last Gen (climate alarmist literature at the event) and Covid stuff too Very odd.

I asked someone who appeared to be an organizer if she saw the irony in their militant views on masking and their general philosophy, and she said "no, have a nice day."

Calgary's only supervised consumption site closes

Calgary's only supervised "supervised consumption" drug site (SCS) is being permanently closed as of Tuesday.

The Alberta government announced in March it would be closing Calgary's only safe consumption site at Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, along with the its only Lethbridge site at the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre, both closing on Tuesday.

This was Calgary's first SCS, introduced back in 2017, eventually opening the Beltline neighborhood at Sheldon Chumir.

As reported by CBC News, it has received criticism from many for the site's public drug use and calls to police in the area.

SCS allows people to use pre-obtained drugs while being watched by medical staff.

Alberta is replacing the site with a rapid access addiction medicine (RAAM) clinic at the same location, providing same-day access to addiction counseling and case management.

It will also have a 24/7 rapid response team near the Chumir, which will respond to overdoses, provide people with healthcare services, and offer withdrawal management.

The government will increase the capacity at the Renfrew Recovery Centre, and do the same for the Calgary Recovery Community and Alpha House.

Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis stated at the announcement of the SCS closure back in March that this will take people out of the cycle of addiction and instead will focus on treatment and recovery services.

Previously, back in November, the government closed the SCS at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital, although the city still has two sites open, including at the George Spady Centre and Radius Community Health and Healing.

It also previously closed the Red Deer overdose prevention site at Safe Harbour Shelter Services, which shut down in March 2025.

A research study published in March by the Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence (CoRE) published in the scientific journal Addiction, found the closure of the overdose site did not lead to an increase in overdose deaths.

Judge Rejects Request to Reopen Cowichan Case to Hear From Private Landowners

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled against a bid by a Richmond company to reopen the Cowichan Tribes aboriginal title case, calling the firm’s application an abuse of process.

Justice Barbara Young has denied the request of private landowner Montrose Property Holdings Ltd. to reopen the Cowichan case so it could be added as a defendant.

The decision, released on June 29, said Montrose Properties was seeking to revisit matters that had already been resolved, and the application was dismissed. Montrose Properties is an owner and developer of industrial workspaces located in Richmond, an island city located immediately south of Vancouver in the Metro Vancouver region.

Young determined that the company’s effort to reopen a finalized trial to become an additional defendant amounted to an abuse of process.

“Although Montrose did not have formal notice of the (original) proceeding, it had knowledge of the proceedings, and chose not to apply to be added as party until long after the conclusion of the trial,” Young said in her 34-page ruling.

Young said she agreed with lawyers for the Cowichan Tribes that reopening the trial could potentially lead to an influx of other private landowners and individuals with commercial or other interests in the Cowichan title lands vying to join the proceedings. Continue…

3% cash back on purchases (with exceptions)

$10 million FDIC insurance (by splitting deposits up between banks)

A 6% yield is not sustainable long-term (at current interest rates). It’s a teaser rate to get people to switch to X Money. Same goes for 3% cash back. That’s 3x higher than the industry average, and will almost certainly not last long.

These teasers may get a lot of people to switch. But it’s unclear how long the perks will last, and it’s currently only available to a small group.

X is not a bank. At least not yet. It’s more like a “neobank”, which manages the marketing and customer relationship, while licensed banks handle the deposits.

The companies confirmed Tuesday they are working together on the project, which would follow a corridor previously acquired from another company. South Bow and Bridger said their immediate focus is engaging with landowners and communities along the proposed route.

Reuters reports the proposed line would serve as the third segment of a larger system intended to transport Alberta crude to the key US oil storage and trading hub in Cushing.

According to a recent research note from JP Morgan, a joint venture involving South Bow and Bridger acquired the right-of-way associated with the former Liberty Pipeline project from Tallgrass Energy. The Liberty Pipeline was ultimately cancelled after being proposed to transport oil from the Rocky Mountain region and North Dakota's Bakken formation to Oklahoma.

Neither South Bow nor Bridger confirmed details of the reported acquisition, while Tallgrass Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The new proposal complements the companies' previously announced Prairie Connector project, a planned Alberta-to-Wyoming pipeline that could boost Canadian crude exports to the United States by more than 12%.

The Prairie Connector received a major boost earlier this year when US President Donald Trump signed a cross-border permit authorizing the project. The development has been viewed as a partial revival of the long-abandoned Keystone XL concept, which was effectively terminated after former US President Joe Biden revoked its permit in 2021.

While Prairie Connector would follow a different route than Keystone XL through the US, South Bow's portion of the project would make use of approximately 150 kilometres of pipeline already constructed in Canada but never placed into service.

That infrastructure would connect with Bridger's proposed Montana pipeline before extending roughly 1,038 kilometres to Guernsey, Wyoming.

Energy analyst Matthew Lewis said the proposed Wyoming-to-Cushing segment is essential to the broader plan.

"The third leg is an imperative piece of the overall project. There is currently no significant oil egress capacity out of that Wyoming/Colorado area to major hubs like Cushing. Thus, you need a major new build project to carry that oil from Wyoming to an oil hub," Lewis said.

According to filings with the Canada Energy Regulator, South Bow intends to resume work on its portion of Prairie Connector during the second quarter of 2027, with the pipeline expected to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2028.

The company said last month it had secured the shipping commitments required to move the project forward, marking another milestone for a proposal aimed at expanding export capacity for Canadian oil producers.

China says it will impose tariffs on Canadian pea starch following an investigation into anti-dumping activities.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on June 30 that importers of Canadian pea starch will be required to post a preliminary 73.5 percent security deposit with Chinese customs beginning July 1.

The new tariffs are being imposed following a probe launched in August 2025. The Ministry of Commerce said this week its investigation had found that Canadian pea starch was being “dumped” in China, causing “material injury to the domestic industry.”

According to trade data from Statistics Canada, China was the second-largest market for Canadian starches after the United States in 2025. Pea starch comes in the form of white powder and can be used as a thickening or binding agent in different types of food.

The probe into pea starch had been launched on the same day China announced preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola, amid the trade dispute between Ottawa and Beijing.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the Trudeau government’s climate plan is no longer feasible as Canada works to grow conventional and clean energy amid instability.

Carney said the previous plan no longer works in a period marked by global conflict, energy insecurity, affordability pressures, and trade tensions with the United States. He said that, in response to these pressures, Canada must grow oil and gas production while rapidly expanding low-emissions electricity and nuclear power.

“The changes we have made will mean that our emissions will be higher in the next few years than they were projected to be under the previous government’s plan, but in my judgment that plan was not sustainable over the long term,” Carney said in a June 30 “forward guidance” video posted online.

After taking office in 2015, the Trudeau government initially adopted Canada’s existing target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, before raising the goal in 2021 to a 40 to 45 percent reduction by 2030.

The Carney government has not announced a new specific emissions target, with federal documents still listing Canada’s 2030 target as 40 to 45 percent below 2005 levels and its 2035 target as 45 to 50 percent below 2005 levels.

However, Carney said his government’s framework for energy expansion means emissions will be higher in the next few years than projected under the previous plan. The conditions outlined in the federal-Alberta memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a new oil pipeline will increase the province’s oil production costs, rendering it less competitive than U.S. states that produce energy, a new study suggests.

A report by University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz for the Fraser Institute says that while Alberta currently holds an inherent tax advantage, the carbon tax and regulatory frameworks agreed upon in the MOU with Ottawa erode this edge.

These regulatory requirements and the carbon pricing structures will make Alberta less competitive than the two largest oil producers in the United States, he says. Texas and New Mexico do not face the same federal carbon pricing and rigorous mandatory carbon capture requirements, Mintz notes in his report. He contends that their lower production and compliance costs will lure investors away from Alberta.

“By increasing the marginal costs to produce energy in Alberta, federal and provincial policymakers are in effect encouraging investors to look at other energy-producing jurisdictions where costs are lower and returns on investment are higher,” Mintz said in a June 25 press release. Continue…

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will announce her government’s next moves related to a new proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast on July 2.

Smith’s press secretary Sam Blackett said in a statement to The Epoch Times on June 30 that she would make a “major announcement” around the proposed pipeline to bring 1 million barrels of oil a day to British Columbia.

Along with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the federal government and Alberta on the proposed project in November 2025, Smith had pledged to submit Alberta’s pipeline plan to the Major Project’s Office (MPO) for expedited review by July 1, 2026.

The plan includes commitments by Alberta to pair the proposed pipeline with a carbon capture project, and increase the province’s industrial carbon tax.

In May 2026, Alberta and Ottawa announced a deal to push back the date for an effective industrial carbon price of $130 a tonne by a decade to 2040. The Liberal government had previously proposed to increase it to $170 per tonne by 2030, but Smith had rejected this rate and said it would limit oil and gas production.

Smith said that Ottawa and Alberta also had plans to finalize agreements around clean energy regulations, the proposed oil and gas emissions cap, and impact assessment cooperation on methane equivalency this year. The two governments will also work together to advance the Oil Sands Alliance carbon capture project, which would be built alongside the pipeline to capture carbon emissions.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Louise Arbour both called for unity in their messages to mark Canada Day.

In his message issued July 1, Carney said Canada was “built and bound by a great conviction: that we are strongest when we are united.” He said four colonies decided in 1867 to become one country, “a founding bet that together we could build something greater than the sum of our parts.”

July 1 this year marks the 159th anniversary of Canada’s founding, when the British North American colonies of the Provinces of Canada (Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia formed the Confederation.

The threat of annexation by the United States had been a motivating factor at the time for the colonies to unite.

Concerns about the United States have also played a large role in Canadian politics of late. Carney’s Canada Day message mentions a slogan he has previously used in that context, saying “we can give ourselves far more than anyone could ever take away.”

The United States has chosen not to renew its trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, senior administration officials confirmed on July 1.

“In accordance with the Agreement, the United States, Mexico, and Canada met virtually today to discuss the operation of the USMCA,” U.S. Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement, referring to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement.

“The United States did not agree to renew the USMCA in its current form. As a result, the USMCA is not renewed.”

July 1 marked a pivotal date for the USMCA. Under the pact’s six‑year joint review, negotiators must decide whether to extend the deal through 2042 or decline to do so—a move that would automatically reopen the agreement and trigger a fresh round of negotiations each year for the next decade.

As all three countries engage in annual reviews moving forward, provisions inside the USMCA will remain in effect until 2036, the White House told reporters on a conference call.

“The USMCA did not operate to control the deficit as the president intended,” the senior administration official said. “So that’s really the heart of it, and part of it also extends to market access opportunities in Canada and Mexico.” Continue…

Environment Canada has issued weather alerts across the country as temperatures as high as 37 C are expected to arrive this week.

The warnings, which cover Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and a handful of areas in the Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan, are classified as either yellow or orange, depending on how high temperatures are expected to soar.

Environment Canada says these warnings are put in place when hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption, or health impacts. For yellow warnings, impacts are moderate, localized and/or short-term, while orange warnings indicate major impacts that are widespread and/or may last a few days.

Red warnings are in place when severe weather is potentially life-threatening. These warnings are rare, and there currently aren’t any in place. Continue…

Although Prime Minister Mark Carney usually works to emphasize his government’s differences from that of his predecessor’s, he and Justin Trudeau each touted the importance of connection as the country turned 159.

The pair exchanged a hug and friendly greeting as Carney arrived for the national Canada Day ceremony and festivities not far from Parliament Hill.

Donning a suit as a heat wave descended on the city, causing temperatures to soar as high as 35C with the humidity making it feel even hotter, Carney smiled as he gestured towards Trudeau, wearing a more breezy-looking outfit of a white dress shirt with rolled sleeves and top button undone, paired with casual tan pants and sunglasses.

On stage, Carney applauded Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who later spoke and was seated among another dignitaries, for representing the country on the Artemis II mission.

Drawing on that historic trip around the Moon, Carney said it demonstrated what was possible with courage, a trait he says was shown by the firefighters currently battling a blaze in a remote area of Northwest Territories and the five police officers who were recently killed in the line of duty.
