One dead after freight train collision in Germany (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

One person was killed after two freight trains collided during shunting operations in Munich, Germany, in the early hours of Saturday. The fatal accident occurred hours after a similar rail collision left one passenger dead and dozens seriously injured in the UK.

A video shared by one of the witnesses on social media showed two rail cars hanging off a bridge after they derailed and plunged onto the roadway below. Additional footage captured emergency crews and heavy machinery at the scene, with the derailed cars lying beside the bridge as firefighters and police carried out recovery operations.

“The fact that two trains collided and fell from a bridge is unbelievable,” a fire department spokesperson told newspaper Die Zeit.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident, according to Munich police, which said streets in the Milbertshofen district in the north of the city would remain closed until recovery operations are completed. Continue…

MPs reject electronic voting as Elections Canada explores future technology

Members of Parliament are warning against any move toward electronic voting after a Commons committee recommended Canada never allow ballots to be cast online or through virtual platforms.

Blacklock's Reporter says the House affairs committee issued the recommendation in a report examining special ballot voting, rejecting proposals that would permit Canadians to vote electronically in federal elections.

“The Government of Canada should not consider any measures which would see special ballots cast by electors electronically,” the committee stated in its report, Challenges Regarding Special Ballot Voting.

Special ballots include mail-in ballots and other voting methods used outside traditional polling stations.

The report comes after testimony from Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault, who suggested future governments may wish to examine new technologies for voting.

“Electronic voting was mentioned by some witnesses,” MPs wrote. “While some discussed instituting a ballot system that is entirely virtual, others described solutions pairing technology with other methods such as postal voting.”

Committee members specifically cited Perrault’s comments that modern telecommunications technology could eventually allow Canadians to vote remotely.

According to the report, Perrault suggested a voter could potentially participate in a teleconference, present identification and then be moved into a separate virtual room to cast a secret ballot.

“He noted that teleconference voting would not be allowed under the current legal framework,” the report stated. However, Perrault added that such a system “seems to me that it’s more rooted in the future.”

The committee's review followed the 2025 federal election, when more than 1.2 million Canadians cast special ballots, the highest number on record and nearly double the total recorded during the 2019 campaign.

While MPs rejected electronic voting, Elections Canada has spent years modernizing election administration through what it describes as a digital strategy.

In 2023, the agency introduced electronic voting lists for use by poll workers and returning offices, replacing some paper-based systems.

Perrault said the technology was intended to improve voter services, reduce wait times and address staffing shortages at polling stations.

“This solution would improve services to voters by reducing wait times and help address the challenges of a diminishing workforce at the polls,” he wrote in Elections Canada's 2023 departmental plan.

The agency has also explored broader digital modernization efforts. Since 2016, Elections Canada has sought software solutions to automate voter lists and support systems that could potentially allow electors to vote from anywhere in the country.

Those efforts have raised concerns among some parliamentarians.

Former electoral reform committee chair Francis Scarpaleggia previously questioned the direction of Elections Canada's modernization plans.

“I just don’t know what they’re driving at,” Scarpaleggia said at the time. “It is hard to say what Elections Canada has in mind.”

The committee’s report signals that, despite growing use of digital technology in election administration, MPs remain reluctant to extend those changes to the casting of ballots themselves.

The piece argues that the war in Iran not only didn’t accomplish anything, but that it hurt the United States.

M.I.T. professor Caitlin Talmadge, who specializes in Persian Gulf security issues, is quoted as saying that the memorandum of understanding signed last week showed that “the United States bit off more than it could chew and doesn’t want to escalate.” She added, “I think the U.S. in some ways undermined the leverage that it had,” speaking of the leverage gained from Operation Midnight Hammer last June.

Karim Haggag, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, said, “The reality is that the region in the aftermath of this conflict will be much more insecure.”

Author Afshon Ostovar says the war only “reinvigorate[d] Iran’s perception of its own security.”

Retired Israeli intelligence officer Danny Citrinowicz said the memorandum of understanding “is a collapse of all the strategy that we had regarding Iran,” ostensibly referencing Israel’s strategy, not that of the United States.

Unnamed analysts also claim that Iran is “working assiduously to restore Hezbollah’s military capacity,” which would violate the agreement.

Trump went off on the Times in response to the report.

“REALLY? Their Military is DONE, their Navy is GONE, their Air Force is GONE, their Launching Pads, Missiles, Drones and Manufacturing of same, is almost GONE, their top two sets of Leaders are GONE, their Inflation is at 250%, their Economy is BROKEN, their Soldiers aren’t being paid, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN, THE OIL IS GUSHING, and the U.S. Stock Market and Jobs are at record HIGHS,” he said.

The neighborhood was placed under an emergency alert just after 12:30 p.m. Monday due to an “armed and dangerous suspect” in the area, says the Montreal Gazette.

Authorities issued a public warning telling residents in the affected zone to remain inside. “If you are in the affected area, shelter indoors, lock the doors, stay away from windows and follow instructions of local authorities,” the alert said.

It noted, "We may initiate new restructuring plans in the future. In addition, the adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce."

Niger has formally initiated the process of its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), months after its decision to exit the tribunal over claims of “neo-colonialist” bias.

The West African country reportedly submitted a letter to the UN on Monday to leave the Rome Statute, the treaty on which the ICC was founded.

“While the court had raised great hopes among peoples who cherish peace and justice, it has been misused and exploited,” the letter said, according to AP.

In response, the ICC said it regrets “any decision to depart from the collective effort to end impunity for the most serious international crimes.”

The withdrawal will take effect after 12 months, making Niger the third country to leave the ICC. Burundi withdrew from the Rome Statute in October 2017, accusing the court of deliberately targeting Africans for prosecution. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are widely embraced by Canadian corporations, with 96 percent of firms implementing DEI training and 88 percent establishing demographic hiring goals, a new study suggests.

The study by public policy think tank the Aristotle Foundation also found that most of the top 25 TSX-listed Canadian firms it examined heavily engage in “social engineering.”

The term social engineering refers to the strategic use of intentional, top-down policies and interventions aimed at transforming cultural attitudes in a bid to address perceived historical injustices.

Such training appears to function less as an impartial method of fostering workplace civility at many of the companies, and more as a tool for instilling a preferred moral vocabulary and a specific set of social assumptions, the authors wrote. This sends a signal to employees that only certain attitudes and beliefs are endorsed by the company, they said.

Lead author Prof. Leigh Revers said DEI training modules are just one way social engineering is occurring.

“One of the most interesting findings we uncovered is the extent to which Canada’s largest companies fund organizations that advocate controversial issues,” Revers said in a press release. Continue…

Jury finds man guilty of fatally stabbing two children in New Brunswick

Roman Kamyshnyy told a prosecutor last week he had no memory of the day he fatally stabbed two children, a crime for which he was found guilty Wednesday.

“You have pictures, you have videos, you have everything in your hands,” said Kamyshnyy, who immigrated to Canada from Ukraine four years ago. “I was only listening over here trying to recover this horrible situation.”

An 11-person jury convicted Kamyshnyy, 46, on two counts of first-degree murder on Jan. 29, 2025, the morning police found the bodies of the two boys, aged 10 and 17, in an apartment on Skaling Court in Saint John, N.B. On Tuesday, the Crown pieced together a paper trail of videos recorded, notes written and emails drafted in days before the killings, arguing Kamyshnyy planned to kill the boys and then himself.

The trial began June 8, with the Crown wrapping up its case Wednesday last week and the defendant testifying Thursday. After each side delivered their closing arguments Tuesday, the jury received its instructions, deliberated for about 5.5 hours and came back with a verdict Wednesday morning.

Many details heard by the jury can’t be reported in this newspaper due to a publication ban that covers information which would tend to identify the victims, other than an alleged domestic violence context to the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Durante King-Mclean, 27, of Cambridge, Ont., was sentenced to 160 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Jennifer P. Wilson this week.

The charges stem from traffic stop on Sept. 2, 2023, four and a half months after the heist took place. Pennsylvania State Police in Franklin County stopped a rental vehicle driven by King-Mclean. During the stop he fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief foot chase.

A subsequent search of the vehicle found 65 handguns, each one hidden in a sock. Of the 65, two were fully automatic, 11 had been stolen and one had an obliterated serial number. Police say some of the proceeds from the stolen gold had been used to buy guns in the U.S. to smuggle into Canada.

Around five out of every six rodents tested carried at least one mutation linked to reduced sensitivity to poison.

More than two-thirds also had additional genetic changes previously tied to resistance against common rodenticides.

The mutations were especially common in house mice, which researchers said appear to be adapting faster than larger brown rats, also known as sewer rats.

Afghan migrant Massoud S. was initially charged with “serious abuse or act of cruelty against a domestic, tame, or captive animal.” He continued to deny the rapes in this case despite DNA evidence and being caught redhanded raping a goat. He even told a court psychologist that anyone who did rape the animals only did it to “not rape a woman” since “a goat could not identify him afterward.”

The sexual assaults occurred between February and April and on top of the DNA evidence, his phone location also had him pinged to the crime scene.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” he told the magistrates regarding the ample evidence against him.

Ukraine is gaining the upper hand on the battlefield, in the air and at sea, while Ukrainian drones have stopped Russia’s ground advance and are causing serious disruptions to Russian logistics, EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Policy Andrius Kubilius said on Tuesday in Brussels.

In his speech launching the European defense and security summit, the commissioner pointed out that Ukrainian drones can paralyze the supply of the Russian army up to 300 kilometers from the front lines.

According to the EU commissioner, Ukraine is no longer just a beneficiary of international subsidies, but also contributes to the protection of other countries.

Kubilius said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is reacting to Ukrainian successes with increasingly desperate attacks. He cited last week’s attack on the Kyiv monastery as an example, which he called an attack on culture, religion and civilization.

According to the commissioner, Russia continues to pose a threat to Europe’s security, and Moscow may be able to test NATO’s Article 5, which establishes collective defense. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine’s successes do not mean the end of the war, nor do they mean that Russia is weak.

As he said, Russia is still able to produce weapons and drones in large quantities, so Europe must prepare to strengthen its own defense capabilities. Continue…

India's Imports Of Russian Oil Set For New Record High

India is set to import a record-high volume of Russian crude in June as the Hormuz crisis and the U.S. waivers on Russia’s barrels have pushed the world’s third-largest crude importer to gorge on Moscow’s oil again, OilPrice reported.

India has imported 2.6 million barrels per day (bpd) of Russian crude oil so far in June, according to preliminary vessel-tracking data from commodity analytics firm Kpler cited by Indian media.

So far this month, Russian crude has accounted for as much as 53.5% of all Indian oil imports, per the data. Continue…

Released on bail twice to attack Alberta children again

Grande Prairie police are looking for other potential victims of Joseph Kidd, who has been previously charged with multiple sexual assault offences and released twice on bail.

On Thursday, Grande Prairie RCMP Supt. Mark MacDougald, claimed 32-year-old Kidd had been a part four different investigations and is currently being kept in custody until July 2.

The first investigation into Kidd occurred in April when Grande Prairie RCMP and Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) looked into alleged sexual assault after a 14 year old victim from BC met Kidd over social media.

Kidd allegedly drove to pick up the victim form BC and brought them back to Grande Prairie where the victim was assulted at his home, where the victim stayed for one week.

The victim escaped Kidd's residence after he left for work.

From this incident, Kidd was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, forcible confinement, assault while choking, and two charges of unsafe storage of a firearm.

After being brought in front of a judge for a bail hearing on April 20 he was released 10 days later under "numerous conditions."

On May 10, GPPS received an emergency call at Kidd's residence.

"The investigation revealed Kidd had driven to Lloydminster to pick up an 18-year-old female," stated MacDougald.

"They drove back to his residence in Grande Prairie, where Kidd allegedly assaulted her as she refused to engage in sexual acts with him."

"Kidd was arrested and again charged with assault, assault while choking, sexual assault, and three counts of failing to comply with release conditions."

After a bail hearing, Kidd was released on June 1, with a $7,500 cash bail and ordered to attend Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie at the end of June.

Again on June 18 a 15-year-old female attended the Grande Prairie and reported Kidd had allegedly been following her.

She had met Kidd in early June where he had offered her a ride in her vehicle and she was sexually assaulted before leaving the vehicle.

MacDougald claimed three different incidents occurred between Kidd and the victim in the span of June.

Kidd was again charged with "criminal harassment, sexual interference, sexual assault, and again failed to comply with for these conditions."

"Also on June 18, Grande Prairie RCMP received a 911 call from the mother of a 12-year-old female who stated a male driving a yellow Chevrolet Camaro convertible tried to lure her child into the vehicle."

"RCMP and the GPPS responded immediately, completed immediate patrols, and located Kidd driving the suspect vehicle."

"As a result of that investigation, Kidd was charged with abduction of a person under the age of 14, and failed to comply with release conditions after a judicial interim release hearing."

On Kidd's ordered court appearance on June 22, Kidd did not attend, and was remanded into custody until July 2.

Since Kidd was contacting some of his victims through social media, the RCMP and GPPS believe there might be more victims who still may not have come forward.

"If you believe you are a victim of Kidd or have information regarding any of these incidents, please contact the RCMP or the police of jurisdiction in your nearest community," stated MacDougald

110 Km/h Speed Limit Expands to More Ontario Highways

Speed limits will increase to 110 kilometres per hour on several stretches of Ontario highways beginning this summer, the province has announced.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria told reporters the province is raising the speed limit from 100 kilometres per hour to 110 kilometres per hour on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways.

The incremental rollout begins on June 26 on sections of Highway 401 and Highway 416 in eastern Ontario, Sarkaria said at a June 24 press conference in King City, Ont. Other sections of Highway 401, 402, 403, 416, 417 and Queen Elizabeth Way will change by Sept. 30.

“This work is critical to improve travel times for families, commuters, and workers and will benefit millions of drivers,” Sarkaria said. “And once in effect, nearly 89 percent of our provincial highway network will have the posted speed limit of 110 kilometres per hour, up from 43 percent today.”

Nearly 89 percent of Ontario’s highways will have an increased speed limit by October, Premier Doug Ford said in a June 24 social media post. The adjustment corresponds to the intended design speed of the highways, he added.

Crown Nixes $28K Fine From Nova Scotia ‘Woods Ban’

A $28,872.50 fine imposed under Nova Scotia’s now-invalidated “woods ban” has been revoked, ending the enforcement actions against a resident who deliberately violated the ban in protest last summer.

The Halifax Crown Attorney’s Office has withdrawn the ticket against Canadian Armed Forces veteran Jeffrey Evely, who was set to appear in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on July 22, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced in a June 24 press release.

Lawyers backed by the Justice Centre said they had planned to argue that the Nova Scotia Supreme Court’s spring ruling in favour of Evely’s constitutional challenge to the province-wide prohibition essentially eliminated the prosecutor’s ability to enforce the ticket.

The Crown attorney typically withdraws a ticket if the statute under which it was issued is struck down by the courts.

Constitutional lawyer Marty Moore said he welcomed the prosecutor’s decision.

“This outcome confirms what should have been clear after the Supreme Court’s ruling: governments cannot continue enforcing penalties that arise from unconstitutional state action,” Moore said in the JCCF press release. Continue…

Aging, outdated or moribund technology and data management practices across the RCMP are undermining its ability to effectively police and protect Canadians and will require significant investment, according to a new report.

In February, the RMCP’s Management Advisory Board (MAB) sent the police force’s commissioner, Mike Duheme, a comprehensive “advisory letter” with a stark message about its information management/information technology (IM/IT) systems.

Old and aging IM/IT systems are failing and are preventing the RCMP from adopting the latest technologies, meaning the national police force is also falling increasingly behind its partners technologically, wrote MAB member Doug Moen.

Current IM/IT limitations, such as aging infrastructure, siloed legacy systems, and isolated databases, adversely affect policing effectiveness, evidence-based decision-making, and, therefore, public safety. Temporary fixes are costly and unsustainable,” reads the letter from Moen, who chairs the MAB’s Finance and Administration Standing Committee.

“Significant transformation is thus essential. This requires a comprehensive overhaul of existing IM/IT systems,” it adds.

Afghan war veteran battling DND over privacy violation and benefit payment snafu

An Afghan war veteran is battling with National Defence after the department violated her privacy by providing her banking information to another military member and then erroneously transferring a payment for that individual into her account.

The Department of National Defence is now demanding that retired Sgt. Tara Bertram pay back the $21,794.89 it sent her by mistake. DND has also warned Bertram that she could face interest charges if there are delays in paying back the money.

The debacle started in the summer of 2025, when Bertram, a combat veteran who originally served in the army in Afghanistan before transferring to the air force, was leaving the Canadian Forces on a medical disability.

With a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, she was provided a flurry of payments from the Canadian Forces. Those included a final paycheque, payment for unused leave, back pay, severance pay, payment for long-term disability and disability benefits from Veterans Affairs.

In January 2026, Bertram received a notice from DND saying that she had received severance payments of $17,187.24 in August and $2,872.73 in December that were supposed to go to another military member. DND was demanding the return of the money.

“I didn’t pick up on the extra payment,” said Bertram, who is in New Brunswick. “My mental health is so bad I don’t manage the finances. My spouse does that and they wouldn’t have known.”

When Bertram dug further into what had happened, the department admitted to an “administrative error.” The money was supposed to go to another individual with a similar last name.

But Bertram, 44, said the department’s story didn’t make sense.

As the country mourned the eight killed and others injured by a shooter who attacked a secondary school in interior British Columbia, more than 10,000 anti-LGBTQ posts expressing hate and calling for violence were made the next day by Canadians online, according to an intelligence brief.

The details, contained in a memo prepared by the Canadian Security Intelligence Services’ integrated threat assessment centre, warned that those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer were likely to face “increased intimidation, harassment, criminal and extremist violence,” along with public officials affiliated with the community.

“Changes to the hate speech policies of major social media platforms, the amplification of hateful rhetoric on social media, and the increased visibility of (LGBTQ) individuals and events have likely heightened the risk of violence in Canada targeting the (LGBTQ) community, including public officials,” reads the assessment, obtained by National Post. Passengers on board an Air Canada flight on Wednesday have described how they “instantly started praying” when the plane swerved violently, following the captain experiencing a medical issue.

Flight AC7664, which was being operated by regional partner PAL Airlines, was en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Halifax when it was diverted to Boston Logan Airport after the pilot reportedly became incapacitated.

Rodney McDonald, who was among the 61 passengers onboard, told ABC News that it appeared the pilot had suffered a seizure during the flight.

“The moment the plane swerved, I knew something was wrong because it was not turbulence,” McDonald, who was travelling with his wife and two sons, told the outlet.

“The flight started swerving violently. It really felt like someone had jilted the controls, and then it happened over and over again,” he added.

“And, you know, every thought goes through your mind, you start praying. My boys instantly started praying.”

McDonald described how he rushed to help the pilot, who had been dragged out of the cockpit by a flight attendant.

“(I) realized that the pilot was out of control physically, not violently, like it was clear that he was not in control of his faculties and needed to be restrained,” he said. Continue…
