2. We would lose the war against Russia.
Yes, formally we are not at war with Russia, but we are supporting Ukraine towards victory.
A victory that is life-important for EU.
This means that we need steady supplies of LNG for plastic components, Helium for micro-processors, and sulphur.
Without those 3 things we will not be able to help Ukraine towards a victory.
3. We also need those same things, plus oil, to be able to safeguard EU and our ally Canada from a direct US attack on our territory.
From our EU standpoint this is more than enough reason to act decisively.
Now we come to 1 200.
And something tells me that you care far more about this number than the previous number.
While we might be uncomfy and at risk of being invaded by Russia and the US, what is happening to the rest of the world is worse.
We already see fuel shortages in the developping world, several countries are already rationing fuel.
Those same nations also depend heavily on fertilizer from the region.
Without oil, gas, fertilizer, their entire food chain will collapse.
They will have no fuel, no gas, no fertilizer.
We will grumble at having to pay more for food and fuel, but we can soak up that at a cost of potential political instability.
They can't, they can never compete with our money.
So, 1 200 is the projected number of people that will starve to death due to the closed sea lanes.
And yes, that is in millions, not individual individuals.
This is the backdrop to why we do what we do, and will do what we must do.
And here comes the Realpolitik and the numbers associated with that.
Any given number lower than those two numbers is an improvement when you are backed against a wall.
Iran is unimportant.
US/Israel is unimportant.
We will be taking the simplest and fastest route to achieve opening the sea lanes.
I will not state what the ladder of decission entail in the ROE.
I will just say that the alternatives go all the way from words to draconian.
Now ponder how far would you go to save EU if you worked for EU.
Or, how far you would go to save 1 200 million lives.
