The Confederate Flag seems to fit in with the Catastrophist model too. The theory goes that something very like it was visible in the night sky well into Medieval times.

One bar, the Lighted Zodiac. The plane of the Solar system filled with space dust and grit, reflecting Sunlight in the night sky. I have read this was visible as late as the 1840s. Every planet shines on this line, also being confined to the plane of the Solar system. Also called tbe Ecliptic.

The other bar is the Earth's equatorial ring. Presumable a set of real rings anciently (assuming the Flood of Noah caused Saturn's rings and sprayed Earth) but by Medieval times likely faded away to near nothing. But with space grit, remaining water and any orbiting asteroids that would have made a diagonal line crossing the ecliptic due-south in the Northern Hemisphere. With asteroids making stars.

Must have been spectacular.

One thing I see is really as late as the 1920s there was a retained cultural understanding of legendary shapes in the sky. People "thanked their lucky stars". Distinctive shapes like the Confederate Flag still had a residual understanding. The dogma of a static Solar system was not firmly established and people did not talk glibly of 4.5 billion years ago as they do today.

If such sights were residually visible into tne 19th Century they would be on the edge of living memory still. The painting by Campi showing the Passion of Christ (attached and used as banner for this board) was recognised as that being what the Ressurection looked like. It is still described as the Ressurection by art historians but none could explain today why that was so.

There will be other cultural memories from the futher past that were still understood in the 19th and early 20th Century that I will post as I find.

Another example is that God and Heaven was firmly placed in the sky. Only really with the Space Age of the 1950s and 60s does God and His place in Heaven start to become immaterial instead and not in the sky.

There is a tantelising reference in Comyns-Beaumont's Mysterious Comet to an actual sighting of the Antichrist over Canada in the 1920s. People knew what that looked like then but sadly he left no drawing of it and it is not certain now what that means. A red plasma man over the North Pole is my best guess, resembling this laboratory-produced image.

You're welcome! I think conceptually all this stuff is really starting to take off.
