Ukraine and Russia exchanged overnight drone attacks across multiple fronts, with Kyiv calling it one of the largest assaults in weeks and Moscow saying its forces destroyed dozens of Ukrainian UAVs over its territory.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 78 Shahed, Gerbera, and other attack drones from Orel, Millerovo, Kursk, and Chauda in Crimea on the night of Oct. 11.

“As of 09:00 (0600GMT), air defenses shot down or suppressed 54 enemy UAVs in the north, south, and east of the country,” the force said on Telegram, adding that 21 drones hit six locations and that the attack was ongoing.

Kyiv said air defense units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups were engaged in repelling the assault.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 42 Ukrainian drones over several regions between 11 pm (2000GMT) on Oct. 10 and 7 am (0400GMT) on Oct. 11.

The ministry said 19 drones were downed over Volgograd, 15 over Rostov, three over Ulyanovsk, two each over Voronezh and Bashkortostan, and one over Saratov.

Both sides reported no casualties from the latest drone exchanges, which come amid more than a thousand days of the Russia-Ukraine war that began in February 2022.

Police reportedly suspect suicide after Konstantin Ganich’s body was found in his car

Konstantin Ganich, also knownas Kostya Kudo, a prominent Ukrainian crypto-trader and blogger, has been found dead with a gunshot wound to his head, in what the Kiev authorities are reportedly treating as a suspected suicide.

On Friday, crypto markets worldwide suffered one of the largest wipeouts in 2025, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports.

Early on Saturday, Kiev police discovered a dead body in a car, with a firearm registered in Ganich's name, several Ukrainian media outlets reported. While theauthorities revealed that the deceased was an “entrepreneur and blogger, whose activities were connected with cryptocurrencies,” they stopped short of identifying the person publicly.

Officials suspected he was a suicide victim and had “told his relatives about his depressed mood due to financial difficulties shortly before his death, and sent them a farewell message,” as quoted by Unian.

Later on Saturday, a post appeared in Ganich’s Telegram channel, confirming that the 32-year-old “had tragically perished.”

According to Unian, citing anonymous sources, amid the latest crypto-market crash,Ganich lost up to $30 million of investments he was managing, plus his own personal assets. The media outlet also reported that among his clients were allegedly unnamed Ukrainian officials and “influential people,” also that Ganich was involved with Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence. (That’s just bullshit a crypto trader never gets depressed. They expect everything and everyone. Why did Kiev kill him. Did he know too much about Zelenskyy?)

However, Unianquoted other anonymous sources as questioning whether it was suicide. Some claimed that Ganich had recently been blackmailed by law enforcement officials.

The discussions with Merz focused on analyzing Russian intentions and reinforcing joint defense capabilities, including cooperation within the Coalition of the Willing and the PURL initiative.

In his conversation with Starmer, Zelensky explored ways to enhance Ukraine’s air defense and coordinated ongoing collaboration with international partners.

He also expressed gratitude to Finland’s president for the consistent and steadfast support of Ukraine.

Several people sustained injuries in a shooting incident in the market square of the German town of Giessen, local media have reported, citing local officials. The unidentified suspect is said to remain at large.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has launched a petition against the EU’s “war agenda,” warning that by continuing to support Ukraine, the bloc is heading toward a direct confrontation with Russia.

The veteran leader has long criticized Brussels’ “warmongering” stance toward Russia. Addressing supporters at a farmers’ market in Budapest on Saturday, Orban announced that his Fidesz party approved his proposal to launch a national petition against Brussels’ war policies.

”Europe has a war plan that includes going to war against the Russians and giving the Ukrainians everything they ask for. We must stay out of this,” the prime minister said, calling on every Hungarian to join the drive and to take part in a peace march on October 23, later reiterating the call on Facebook.

Some 200 US soldiers arrived in Israel on Saturday in an effort to ensure the historic peace agreement ending the war in Gaza holds.

“America’s sons and daughters in uniform are answering the call to deliver peace in the Middle East in support of the Commander in Chief’s direction in this historic moment,” Adm. Brad Cooper, head of the US Central Command, said.

“This great effort will be achieved with no US boots on the ground in Gaza.”

The American military isn’t expected to head into the Gaza Strip — but rather coordinate troops that will come from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, and manage any heightened tensions with the Israelis.

Part of its role following President Trump’s peace agreement between Israel and Hamas has been described as making sure there are no violations or incursions from either side.

The US army will also set up a center to restart the flow of humanitarian aid to Palestinians, with supplies expected to begin flowing back into the Gaza on Saturday.

Cooper, along with US envoy Steve Witkoff visited an Israeli army post in the Strip Saturday morning to confirm IDF troops were withdrawing as part of the historic cease-fire deal with the terror group, Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported.

“CENTCOM has confirmed that the Israeli Defense Forces completed the first phase withdrawal to the yellow line at 12PM local time, said Witkoff on X. “The 72-hour period to release the hostages has begun.”

Witkoff and Cooper have since returned to Israel, with Witkoff set to speak at Tel Aviv’s Hostages’ Square Saturday night.

RT Russian has released images of documents said to belong to three foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region during fighting with Russian forces.They were identified as citizens of the US, Poland, and Colombia.

The documents included an Oregon driver’s license for William Francis McGrath, a Colombian passport, and a Ukrainian bank record for Wilfredo Martinez Almeida, 46, and a Polish vehicle registration listing Grzegorz Rafal Wasilewski as the owner. Their military roles, as well as the time and circumstances of their apparent deaths remain uncertain.

The deaths of the mercenaries was first reported by TASS on Friday, with a source saying their corpses were discovered in Otradnoye, Ukraine on the Russian border during a sweep of recently captured Ukrainian positions.

A TASS source also claimed that Ukraine’s command had to “fully commit units of the foreign legion from their permanent base in Kharkov” following the Russian advance. He added that there had been “confirmed facts of the elimination of foreign mercenaries across the entire northern section of the front.”

The same source said most foreign fighters in Ukraine “arrive from Latin America – mainly Colombia and Venezuela,” adding that they “are often housed separately, rarely appear on the line of contact, and are regularly destroyed because they are poorly instructed in safety and camouflage.”

Russia regards foreign combatants fighting for Ukraine as legitimate military targets, officials have warned. President Vladimir Putin has said that while foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine “do not fall under the protection of the Geneva Conventions,” Russia treats all prisoners of war humanely.

The Israeli Air Force early Saturday morning bombed hundreds of heavy engineering vehicles it said were being used by Hezbollah to restore its infrastructure in southern Lebanon, in an attack that reportedly killed one and was condemned by the Lebanese president.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said the airstrikes hit Hezbollah sites where the terror group was storing heavy machinery to use “for rebuilding its terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”

The IDF also accused Hezbollah of operating in a manner that poses “a threat to Lebanese civilians and uses them as human shields,” while saying that the “location” of the heavy equipment and its operation by the Iran-backed terror group breached the ceasefire agreement reached last November.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned Israel for the strikes.

“Once again, southern Lebanon has been the target of a heinous Israeli aggression against civilian installations — without justification or pretext,” Aoun said. “The seriousness of this latest attack lies in the fact that it comes after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.”

Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on the al-Msayleh area left one person dead and seven others wounded. According to Lebanese media, the person who was killed was a Syrian national who was passing by in a van transporting fruits and vegetables.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, more than 10 separate strikes were carried out, destroying some 300 vehicles, including bulldozers, excavators, and over 100 small Bobcat utility vehicles.

Earlier this week, an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon killed a Hezbollah operative who was operating an excavator, with the IDF saying that “the terrorist was struck while attempting to restore Hezbollah terror infrastructure.”

Separately, on Friday, the IDF announced that troops demolished a building in southern Lebanon’s Ayta ash-Shab where a cache of weapons belonging to the Hezbollah terror group was located.

The IDF said reservists of the 300th “Baram” Regional Brigade scanned the building before dawn on Friday, following intelligence information that it was being used by Hezbollah.

The soldiers seized the weapons being stored in the building before blowing it up, the army said.

Since the deal to end the fighting, which began after Hezbollah started attacking Israeli communities and military posts following its Palestinian ally Hamas’s October 2023 terror onslaught, Israel has targeted Hezbollah sites and operatives in near-daily strikes.

Under the November 27, 2024, ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, weapons in south Lebanon were to be held only by the state, and the IDF was permitted to act against imminent threats by the terror group.

Since the beginning of the ceasefire, the IDF says it has carried out over 500 airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, killing over 300 operatives and destroying dozens of sites belonging to the terror group, saying they violated the terms of the truce.

With daily drone incursions over bases, NORTHCOM takes aim through Falcon Peak

“We’re between [about] one and two incursions per day” at DoD installations, said NORTHCOM Commander Gen. Gregory Guillot. “I don't know if the problem's worse, or we have more systems out there that can detect them.”

Flying hundreds of feet in the air against a clear blue sky, the small drone barreled toward a defended position, its profile similar to other unmanned systems that have evaded authorities on US installations.

But this drone wouldn’t return to its sender: soon after its detection, defending personnel dispatched their own drone that smashed into the encroacher, sending both plummeting back to earth.

That’s life for a drone during Falcon Peak, a second-year exercise hosted by US Northern Command in late September to hone counter-drone prowess at domestic military facilities.

Despite concerted efforts by the US government to defeat unmanned threats, their incursions into US military installations are increasing, according to NORTHCOM head Gen. Gregory Guillot.

“We’re between [about] one and two incursions per day” at DoD installations, Guillot told reporters during a roundtable here.

A NORTHCOM spokesperson later told Breaking Defense there were 230 drone incursions reported over military installations between September 2023 and September 2024, which jumped by 82 percent to approximately 420 sightings reported over roughly the same period the following year.

Whatever the cause of the increase — and Guillot noted, “I don’t know if the problem’s worse, or we have more systems out there that can detect them” — that kind of major jump is bound to get a response from the Pentagon.

Drone incursions over domestic bases have been a top problem for officials following mysterious unmanned flights over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in late 2023 and other high-profile sightings, prompting widespread scrutiny over why many installations seem powerless to stop them.

The issue, officials have said, is that typical counter-drone technologies are not safe to use in civilian airspace, a problem compounded by a byzantine set of rules for installation self-protection.

Hence the Falcon Peak effort, where the government has called up industry to offer its very best solutions that can detect, track and defeat small drones in ways that maintain the integrity of civilian airspace.

Similar to the first Falcon Peak, held last year at the foothills of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, this year’s event used testing ranges belonging to Eglin Air Force Base on the beaches of Santa Rosa Island in Florida.

“What we learned last year at Falcon Peak” between the DoD and industry is that “we’re pretty good at detecting UAS [unmanned aerial systems] of all types and sizes,” Guillot said.

“Our ability to track them once we’ve detected them, especially through maneuvers and altitude changes was okay, not great. And then our ability to defeat them was poor, especially if it was only in a non-kinetic means.”

The good news? Guillot then said that based on results from this year’s Falcon Peak, it’s clear there’s been significant improvement in all three areas.

Like last year, Guillot said his general observation is that most drone incursions on US military installations are probably just hobbyists who don’t know the rules.

Still, officials have said apprehended drone operators, like a Chinese national who flew a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base late last year, pose national security threats too.

(Guillot said officials have yet to establish a link between drone overflights and a foreign government.)

“So majority, I think, are hobbyists that are in the wrong place at the wrong time. But there’s enough of the others that has me concerned,” he said.

Industry Brings Its Kit

Over the course of several days, NORTHCOM ran hundreds of incursion scenarios to test industry’s counter-drone mettle, with some culminating in “pretty complex” events that involved multiple drones, various flight profiles and even internal navigation technologies that don’t emit signals, according to NORTHCOM Deputy Test Director Jason Mayes.

“They were successful in some, not successful in others,” Mayes said on the Falcon Peak sidelines, adding that it would take time to fully analyze results.

West behind latest coup attempt in Georgia – Tbilisi mayor

Commenting on protests following last week’s municipal elections, Kakha Kaladze has accused certain ambassadors of “inciting violence”

Foreign governments instigated a “coup”attempt in Georgia, the mayor Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, has claimed, referring to recent protests in the South Caucasus nation.

The Georgian government has repeatedly cried foul over alleged external interference in the nation’s internal affairs. It says the West has sought to depose the ruling Georgian Dream party, which has consistently refused to antagonize neighboring Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kaladze claimed that ahead of the municipal elections on October 4, “a campaign had been underway for months regarding a coup d’état,” backed by foreign actors.

According to the official, “hundreds of millions”were spent on the effort through non-governmental organizations, with certain Western ambassadors openly “inciting violence”in Georgia.

On Wednesday, US Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen issued a statement accusing the Georgian authorities of persecuting the opposition and attempting to “silence dissent,”as well as of “making baseless allegations”against former US government employees.

Kaladze responded by describingthe US lawmakers as being “under the influence of the Global War Party.”

Speaking on national television on Monday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze made similar claims, alleging that foreign powers had backed the opposition,whom he characterized as “foreign agents.”

Opposition protests, which quickly descended into clashes with police, erupted last weekend as municipal election result projections indicated that the ruling Georgian Dream party held a solid lead across the country.

The unrest was the latest in a series of similar demonstrations that have gripped Georgia in recent years. They reached a climax in October 2024, following presidential and parliamentary elections, when the opposition accused the authorities of fraud. Protesters had previously also cited a perceived stalling of the EU accession process by the Georgian government. Officials have dismissed all allegations.

The EU openly backed the demonstrators, who according to Kobakhidze, were “financed by foreign special services” in a manner similar to the 2014 Maidan coup in Ukraine.

Germany: Several injured after shooting incident in Giessen

At least three people were injured Saturday after a person opened fire at a marketplace in a town in central Germany, according to local media reports.

The shooting reportedly took place at a sports betting shop at the market square in Giessen, located in the central state of Hesse.

The state public broadcaster later reported that the perpetrator was arrested after initially having reported that the assailant was on the run.

Hessenschau reported that the injured had been taken to the hospital and that they weren't in critical condition.

Police had temporarily cordoned off the market square following reports about the shooting, which took place around 3:10 p.m. local time (1310 GMT).

Police are still examining the situation and the motive remains unknown.

Very little has yet been revealed about the situation.

CIA Deputy DirectorMichael Ellis(pictured left) has removed the acting CIA general counseland put himself into the role until President Trump’s nominee Joshua Simmons can be confirmed by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Deputy Director Ellis, like DNI Tulsi Gabbard is a solid MAGA ally. Without knowing the reason for his decision to remove the CIA general counsel, the New York Times is not happy.

WASHINGTON DC – Michael Ellis, the deputy director of the C.I.A., has abruptly demoted a career lawyer who had been serving as the agency’s acting general counsel since January and installed himself in that role, according to people familiar with the matter.

[…] It was not clear what was behind Mr. Ellis’s taking personal control of making legal judgments for the agency while continuing to help lead it, but the move raised alarms among some current and former intelligence officials.

Remember, one of DNI Tulsi Gabbard’s first moves was to confront the National Intelligence Council inside the CIA and remove it.Gabbard then fired the NIC leadership, and itbecame obvious quickly she intercepted an NIC effortto undermine President Trump’s framework of Venezuela operatives Tren de Aragua De operating as a criminal terrorist organization.Soon thereafter, Gabbard removed the security clearances of 37 current and former officials – some from the CIA stable.

As thatsecond scenariounfolded it became clear the CIA Directorate of Analysis wasattempting to frame a narrative against Gabbard using a changed “covert status” for CIA operative Ms. Julia Gurganus, Senior Executive Manager – Europe and Eurasia Mission Center, Central Intelligence Agency.

The CIA scheme didn’t work. DNI Gabbard declassified and released the CIA work product, and then later removed Gurganus security clearance.

Julia Gurganus was the author of the false, corrupt and heavily weaponized 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment.

At each step of the IC confrontation,we can see CIA operatives intending to interfere.

Therefore,it makes sense for CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis to make a move inside the agencyto ensure the general counsel is not part of the problem. Who can Ellis trust? Given the nature of what has unfolded, the answer is himself.

Why now?

Great question.

Two likely scenarios surface. First, former NSA John Bolton’s DOJ prosecution is likely to come down to a set of “classified” document determinations as defined by the CIA previously working with Bolton. If there is a Bolton indictment looming, Deputy Director Ellis needs to ensure no political defense postures are mounted from within.

Thesecond issue is even bigger in consequence.

With China making bold trade and geopolitical moves simultaneous with President Trump’s focus being directed to the Israeli/Gaza conflict,there is one point of geopolitical leverage which can cut the Gordian knot – Russia.

If President Trump can pull Russia out of the gravitational field of China, things can quickly change.Bold changes within the U.S-Russia relationship, at such a tenuous time as this, would require a fully aligned CIA.

Starhawk (born Miriam Simos on June 17, 1951) is an American feminist and writer.[1] She is known as a theorist of feminist neopaganism and ecofeminism.[2] In 2013, she was listed in Watkins' Mind Body Spirit magazine as one of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People.[3]

Early life

Starhawk was born in 1951 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her father, Jack Simos, died when she was five. Her mother, Bertha Claire Goldfarb Simos, was a professor of social work at UCLA.Both of her parents were the children of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine.

During high school, she and feminist Christina Hoff Sommers were best friends.[4] Starhawk received a BA in Fine Arts from UCLA. The Spiral Dance

Following her years at UCLA, after a failed attempt to become a fiction writer in New York City, Starhawk returned to California. She became active in the Neopagan community in the San Francisco Bay Area, and trained with Victor Anderson, founder of the Feri Tradition of witchcraft, and with Zsuzsanna Budapest, a feminist separatist involved in Dianic Wicca.

She wrote a book, The Spiral Dance, on Goddess religion, which she finished in 1977 but was unable to publish at first. Feminist religious scholar Carol P. Christ included an article on witchcraft and the Goddess movement in the anthology Womanspirit Rising (1979). Christ put Starhawk in touch with an editor at Harper & Row, who eventually published the book.

First published in 1979, The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess became a best-selling book about neopagan belief and practice. A 10th-anniversary edition was published in 1989, followed by a 20th-anniversary edition in 1999. The original text of The Spiral Dance was left largely intact for these editions, expanded primarily by introductions and commentaries reflecting on the book's origins, the rituals described, and the evolution of the author's beliefs and practices. Since its publication, The Spiral Dance has become a classic resource on Wicca and modern witchcraft, spiritual feminism, the Goddess movement, and ecofeminism. The work is distinguished by its visionary mysticism, "broad philosophy of harmony with nature," and ecstatic consciousness.

Beliefs

Starhawk believes that the Earth is a living entity, and that faith-based activism can reconnect oneself to basic human needs. She posits core religious values of community and self-sacrifice as important to eco-pagan movements, as well as the broader environmental justice movement.

She advocates combining social justice issues with a nature-based spirituality that begins with spending time in the natural world, saying that doing so "...can open up your understanding on deeper and more subtle levels where the natural world will speak to you."[5]

Starhawk's activism is deeply rooted in an anti-war philosophy, as she believes that war teaches one to see people culturally different than themselves as inhuman and dangerous.[6] She has written extensively on activism, including advice for activist organizers, examinations of white privilege within radical communities, and calls for an intersectionality of fighting oppression that includes spirituality, eco-consciousness, and sexual and gender liberation

NEW YORK (AP) — Cindy McCain, the widow of Sen. John McCain and head of the U.N. World Food Program, suffered a mild stroke this week and is said to be recovering “well,” according to a press release Thursday from the humanitarian organization.

The statement said McCain, 71, is expected to make a “full recovery” and will be traveling from Rome, where the WFP is based, to Arizona to focus on her recuperation. She will return to her post after her doctors have cleared her in four to six weeks.

“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” said McCain. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care.”

“I personally met mothers and children who were starving in Gaza,” she said. “It is real and it is happening now,”

An advocate for children, McCain has served on the board of directors for Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing facial deformities for children around the world, visiting India, Morocco and Vietnam, the joint announcement said.

McCain succeeded David Beasley, a former South Carolina governor who had led WFP through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the global food crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Beasley was at the helm when the World Food Program was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020, in part for being “a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

Carl Skau, the deputy executive director of WFP, is expected to oversee the organization’s day-to-day operations until McCain’s return.

In the statement Thursday, McCain said she has “full confidence” in her leadership team’s ability “to stay laser-focused on delivering urgently needed food assistance to the more than 100 million people WFP is working to serve across 87 countries.”

Chicago TV Station Employee Arrested for Allegedly Throwing Objects at Border Patrol Vehicle, Later Released Without Charges

An employee with Chicago TV station WGN, Debbie Brockman, was arrested by Border Patrol agents Friday morning for allegedly throwing objects at a Border Patrol vehicle. WGN reported the employee was released later on Friday without any charges filed against her, however Border Patrol in Chicago on Saturday appeared to indicate charges may be filed.

The arrest comes after a federal judge barred the federal government from using force against journalists covering ICE raids and protests in Chicago.

This compilation video posted by USA Today shows Brockman being detained and put into a Border Patrol vehicle. The video is edited to remove a Border Patrol agent warning a vehicle boxing them in to move before the agents took evasive action to escape by hitting the car blocking their path. The New York Post published the unedited video showing the agent warning the blocking vehicle to move. This overhead video shows agents struggling to get the heavyset Brockman off the pavement and into their vehicle.

She calls herself a practicing Witch, with a capital "w."She calls herself a Pagan, a Goddess, a peace activist, an eco-feminist. She calls herself Starhawk, a name that came to her in a dream.

"When people think of a witch and someone named Starhawk, they think of someone in 87 different robes and pentacles, dripping with occult jewelry," Starhawk said during an interview in an exotically decorated attic she calls her Ritual Room. "I'm not much of a dress-up sort of witch. I'll go to an event where I'm the guest speaker and walk up to the door and they'll say, 'Where's your ticket?' "

In her bold and peculiar way, Starhawk is a Bay Area institution. She and other like-minded witches have dug deep roots across Northern California and beyond.

"The people I work with tend to be a bit quirky," said Starhawk's publicist, Adrienne Biggs, whose office in downtown San Rafael is filled with provocative books and magic potions. "Starhawk is amazing. She's one of these people who have an incredible network. She's just beloved. She's on the fringe, but very highly regarded. ... She's a deity. She's a modern-day sage. She doesn't look like a witch. She looks like someone who'd work at an organic bakery.

"You walk in and think, 'Is Starhawk going to put a spell on me?' But then you listen to her, and she changes the way you look at the world. She's a motivator in her gentle, sweet, wise way. ... She's not a 30-second sound bite. She's a deep and influential thinker."

Starhawk is the author of 10 books on paganism, witchcraft, politics and saving the planet (including two novels). Her latest is "The Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature" (HarperSan Francisco, $19.95).

For the witches among us, Halloween is not just the time for costumes and trick or treat. It's the Witches' New Year, or what is called Samhain, when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is like a black lace curtain. Witches gather to remember and honor their ancestors and all those who have crossed over. They mourn the losses and pain suffered by their Mother, the Earth. They also celebrate the Goddess - life's sacred cycles of birth, growth, death and regeneration.

Spiral dances and circles of remembrance for thousands of witches and wannabes will be held this weekend in San Francisco, Sebastopol, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz and other Bay Area locales. At a spiral dance, friends and strangers join hands and lose some but not all of their inhibitions. They cast a circle to create a sacred space - invoking the elements of air, fire, water and earth. There's ecstatic drumming, singing, laughter and play.

Why do witches wear black?

"It's slenderizing and doesn't show dirt," Starhawk said. "Black is the dark of the moon, and a good time for magic. It's quieter. There's less external stimulation. You can focus more on the messages and energies that are subtle."

Why do witches dance naked under the moon?

"The body is sacred. The human body is an embodiment of the sacred quality of life," she said. "You don't have to cover it up, hide it, or be ashamed of it. And when you're naked and outside, your skin is in contact with the elements. There's nothing separating you from the natural world."

Witchcraft's ranks include lawyers, doctors, secretaries, taxi drivers, video store clerks and auto mechanics. There's no dress code for today's witches. Many are college-educated women; some are men. And some couples take their kids to summer witch camps, such as Witchlets in the Woods, a camp for pagan families and their children in Mendocino County.

But witches have long been the victims of prejudice. Thousands of their ancestors were burned at the stake. Societies' preconceived notions of witchcraft include ugly hags with evil intentions and supernatural powers. Children's stories tell of witches who cast hexes and fly on broomsticks.

Modern witches say they are cautious about casting spells.

"We have a saying: Anything you send out magically returns to you three times over," Starhawk said. "When I was younger, I certainly experimented by doing a lot of love spells. Eventually, it worked. But there were times when the Goddess seemed to be sending me anyone."

Christian fundamentalists still tend to believe that witches do the work of the devil. Liberals often dismiss witchcraft as a frivolous endeavor. Witches view the teachings and traditions of Wicca as a religion, with its roots in indigenous cultures of Western Europe, including the Celtic Faeries. Witches are pagans (believers in earth-based spirituality), but not all pagans are witches.

Private coven meetings are rarely open to outsiders. Good witches don't believe in Satan. Nor do they offer human or animal sacrifices.

Some witches still dress up, jump the broom and carve jack-o-lanterns in the folk tradition. Besom brigades don pointy hats and ride their brooms in Berkeley's annual Interfaith Pagan Pride Parade and other events. But most witches content themselves with chanting, dancing and participating in rituals.

Starhawk is a founding member of the Reclaiming Collective (www.reclaiming.org), a San Francisco community of witches known for its political activism.

More than anything, Starhawk yearns to make a difference. "We do have the chance to transform society to one that would be in balance with nature," she said. "We have the technology and the overriding need. If we don't, we're headed toward ecological and social catastrophe.

"What we learn from nature is how to heal the damage. How to design systems that work like nature does, where every component contributes to the whole, and where there's no waste as we know it. ... We can learn to create abundance in ways that restore the health of the system, rather than mining it or destroying it."

Starhawk lives part-time in a solar-powered cabin in the remote Cazadero hills of western Sonoma County, near the 485-acre Black Mountain Preserve. It's more than a two-hour drive along some of the North Coast's most wicked roads, the kind that snake through the hills in endless spirals.

She also lives in a townhouse (a collective called the Black Cats) on a busy street in San Francisco's Mission District with her husband, David Miller, and a half dozen housemates, including a schoolgirl who's learning about magic.

The witch is flying around the country on a national book tour, so there's no chance of tromping up to her backwoods cabin. Starhawk agrees to be interviewed when she returns to her roost in San Francisco. The interview takes place in the Ritual Room, a garret with a painted ceiling, a trapeze, drums, masks and candles.

Starhawk, 53, was born under the name of Miriam Simos. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley, playing handball in the parking garage of her apartment building. Her mom, a widow, raised her daughter to be Jewish.

Simos studied art, film and psychology at UCLA, where she won the Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award for an unpublished novel she had written. She was later trained as a psychotherapist at former Antioch West University, but abandoned that field to devote herself to teaching and writing.

"It's a tradition when you're initiated as a witch that you change your name," said Starhawk, who used her witch name at first when she taught workshops, and then as a published author.

A practitioner of "the Craft" for three decades, Starhawk has become one of the leading voices in the Earth-based spirituality movement. Her classic text on witchcraft, "The Spiral Dance," has sold more than 285,000 copies and has been translated into German and Danish. Some of her books are used in college curricula.

Starhawk also collaborated with filmmaker Donna Read on "Signs Out of Time," an hourlong documentary on the life of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, who discovered ancient remains in Greece and the Balkans of what she concluded were peaceful, Goddess-worshipping civilizations.

Something else that sets Starhawk apart from ordinary witches is her passion for protest. She's participated in countless demonstrations, ranging from the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to the G8 summit in Genoa, Italy, in 2001 and the World Trade Organization talks in Cancun, Mexico, in 2003. She's held vigils at Vandenberg Air Force Base and protested against Israeli troops in the West Bank. She's been arrested more than two dozen times.

Louis Vitale, a Roman Catholic priest and political activist, first met Starhawk at the military's Nevada Test Site about 25 years ago.

"She's always there, wherever there's a struggle going on," Vitale said. "We come from different religious foundations, but I believe in her spiritual depth. And I'm impressed with her ability to speak to the young people. ... She's charismatic."

Starhawk wrote a daily blog from outside last month's Republican National Convention in New York, where she demonstrated and was arrested with nearly 2, 000 other protesters.

"She's not an armchair philosopher," said David Hartsough, executive director of Peacekeepers, a San Francisco political action organization. "Over the last 25 years-plus, she has been out there participating and helping to organize nonviolent movements. ...

"She's tireless. She's not one to be scared off or intimidated. We could use thousands more Starhawks," he said. "It's not ideological. I think she can communicate with people from a broad range of political perspectives, and people respect her. There's a very strong core there. ... She has caught a vision of what a just, and peaceful, and nonviolent society and world would look like, and has been inspired by that."

Starhawk is a harsh critic of the Monsanto Company and the biotechnology industry's efforts to produce genetically modified food products. She is a practitioner of permaculture: a system of ecological design for sustainable gardens, agriculture, housing, industry and cities.

She conducts workshops for protesters planning to participate in nonviolent demonstrations. Her husband, a former lawyer who drives a taxi, is also a peace activist. He served two years in federal prison for burning his draft card to protest the Vietnam War.

Starhawk talks about global warming, the melting of polar ice caps, the collapse of the North Sea ecosystem, and the Earth's fast-rising temperatures.

"Nature is what sustains us. Too often, we don't pay attention to that," she said. "We think we're independent from the natural world, that somehow we're above and beyond it. The Earth is what we live on and live from. And because we don't pay attention to nature, I think we're in a situation where the health of the natural world is critically challenged. ... But we seem unable to pay attention to that as a society."

People in Starhawk's inner circle call her Star. Her assistant and former apprentice, Mary DeDanan, is called Mer. She describes one slice of Starhawk's mission as taking witchcraft "from the realm of wacky to some sort of intellectual respectability."

"It's a serious religion, not a get-rich scheme," said DeDanan, who books Starhawk's crowded calendar of personal appearances. "Modern witches are modern people, and they don't have instant knowledge and wisdom. It's a learning continuum."

Starhawk shuns most New Age conferences, where witchcraft is often linked with winning the lottery and other ways to make a fast buck. She chooses instead to speak at universities and to teach workshops, including Earth Activist Training sessions (www.earthactivisttraining.org), that weave permaculture, political activism, spirituality and nature awareness.

"She's optimistic, which is pretty amazing given how much she knows and the difficult place the world is in," DeDanan said. "She's someone with a lot of genuine hope and determination. ... She has an amazing, high-energy schedule that would reduce most people to tears. ... About 70 percent of it is unpaid volunteer work."

On a rain-soaked October night in Miami, the police have commandeered downtown. It is midnight, and patrol cars cordon off the streets of run-down delis and dollar stores. Dozens of black-clad officers maneuver and bullhorn in the distance, practicing their tactics. We're expecting about 70,000 to 100,000 protesters to come down here in November, says a beat cop, guarding a corner from his squad car. Our guys are doing exercises all around.

A few blocks over, at a red light, Lisa Fithian pulls her compact rental car behind a squadron of city police cruisers. Hers is one of the few civilian cars in this area, certainly the only one carrying an advance guard of that human wave heading for Miami. While most people have been ushered out of the downtown area, the 42-year-old Fithian wants to go into it, to do reconnaissance with three fellow activists. Weeks from now, she will be marching in these streets, and the police will no longer be practicing. Since it is difficult to find our way about, Fithian decides, boldly, to follow the cruisers. You know, she says, it's kind of nice to tail the cops for once.

When, like Fithian, you have been arrested some 30 times, the police become less of a fearful authority than antagonists in a battle you just can't wait to begin. Fithian, wholives in Austin, Tex., has been involved in planning protests in Seattle, Washington, Prague, Genoa, Quebec City, New York, Sacramento and Cancún, and she has come to Miami in advance of the Free Trade Area of the Americas meeting that will start Nov. 17.Her intention is to scout the city - to understand the layout, to meet with every local activist group willing to meet with her and to plan how to derail the negotiations.

For want of a better word, I'm a professional at this, she says. My eye is trained. I walk through a city, and I see a parking garage, and I think, That'd be a great place to drop a huge banner, or I see an open restaurant, and I think, That'd be a good place to escape to if things get crazy. Sometimes places will tell me what they want.

What Miami wants, Fithian says, is crisis. This week, representatives from the 34 countries in the Americas (minus Cuba) will meet at the Intercontinental Hotel to broker the world's furthest-reaching free-trade agreement, known among critics as Nafta on steroids. The premise of the Free Trade Area of the Americas is to expand 1993's Nafta agreement from the three original countries (the United States, Canada and Mexico) all the way through South America. To Fithian and others, the Free Trade Area of the Americas is a corporate land grab created by a nondemocratic institution that is stamping out indigenous culture and threatening the environment as it goes. While delegates will hammer out details inside, hundreds of different N.G.O.'s and social-justice groups and thousands of union members will march and rally outside, on the other side of what will assuredly be a heavily guarded metal fence, on Nov. 20.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Firefights broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border late on Saturday, with the Afghan Taliban attacking Pakistani posts, according to security officials from both countries, following a Pakistani airstrike in Kabul this week.

Pakistani security officials said that they were responding "with full force" to what they called unprovoked firing from Afghanistan. The exchange of fire took place at more than six locations along the border, they said.

The Taliban forces said they captured three Pakistani border posts. Pakistani security officials said their military had destroyed several Afghan posts.

Video footage shared by Pakistani security officials showed gun and artillery firing towards Afghanistan, lighting up the night sky.

RETALIATION FOR PAKISTANI AIRSTRIKES

Enayatullah Khowarazmi, spokesperson for Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense, said it was a retaliatory operation for Pakistan's violation of Afghan airspace. He said the attack concluded at midnight local time.

"If the opposing side again violates Afghanistan's airspace, our armed forces are prepared to defend their airspace and will deliver a strong response," Khowarazmi said.

There was no immediate response from Pakistan on whether the clashes had ended. The border runs for 2,600 km (1,615 miles).

Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban administration of harbouring militants of the Pakistani Taliban who attack Pakistan, with the support of Pakistan's adversary, India. New Delhi denies the charge, while the Taliban say that they do not allow their territory to be used against other countries.

A Pakistani security official had told Reuters this week that the airstrike had targeted the leader of the Pakistani Taliban militant group in Kabul, travelling in a vehicle. It was unclear if he had survived. Islamabad had warned Kabul that its patience had run out.

The Taliban administration's foreign minister visited India this week, the first such trip by a senior Taliban official since the group seized power in 2021, and the two sides agreed to upgrade ties. That visit raised further concerns in Pakistan.

There has been an upsurge in attacks by militants in Pakistan since the Taliban came to power.

According to a Huntington Beach police spokesperson, two people were on board the helicopter and both made it out. Three people in the street were injured and all were transported to a hospital.

Messaging app Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov warns that a “dark, dystopian world” is approaching, with governments worldwide rolling back privacy protections.

“I’m turning 41, but I don’t feel like celebrating. Our generation is running out of time to save the free internet built for us by our fathers,” said Durov in an X post on Thursday.

“Once-free countries are introducing dystopian measures,” said Durov, referencing the European Union’s Chat Control proposal, digital IDs in the UK and new rules requiring online age checks to access social media in Australia.

Diane Keaton has died. She was 79.

PEOPLE can confirm the legendary actress died in California on Saturday, Oct. 11. "There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirms to PEOPLE that they responded to Keaton's home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a local hospital.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s thanks to her role in The Godfather films and her collaborations with director Woody Allen. She won an Oscar for Best Actress for 1977’s Annie Hall. Her long career included movies like The First Wives Club, multiple collaborations with director Nancy Meyers and the Book Club franchise.

The actress was born in Los Angeles in 1946 as Diane Hall, and was the oldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, while her mom stayed at home.

Still, Keaton thought her mother dreamed of something bigger. "Secretly in her heart of hearts she probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind," the actress told PEOPLE in 2004. "She sang. She played the piano. She was beautiful. She was my advocate.”

Keaton performed in plays in high school, and after graduating in 1964, she pursued drama in college. But she soon dropped out and moved to New York to try to make her way in theater. She took her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, for her professional name, because there was already a Diane Hall registered with Actors' Equity.

In 1968, Keaton was cast in Broadway’s Hair as the understudy for Sheila. In 2017, Keaton told PEOPLE that she struggled with bulimia during this time after the director of the show told her she needed to lose weight, though she didn’t blame him for her illness. “Believe me, it had to do with an overabundant need for more. Too much. It was a mental illness,” she said.

“I became a master at hiding. Hiding any evidence — how do you make sure no one knows? You live a lifestyle that is very strange. You’re living a lie,” she explained about her illness. She eventually recovered thanks to therapy, but said bulimia also robbed her of the ability to enjoy her time on Broadway.

Convicted pedophile was serving 29-year jail sentence when he was attacked by fellow inmates Saturday

West Yorkshire Police confirmed Watkins’ death and said detectives from the homicide and major inquiry team have begun an investigation after prison staff were called to an assault on a prisoner on Saturday morning and found Watkins dead at the scene.

The details of the attack are yet to be revealed, but Sky News says he was attacked with a knife, while The Sun claims he had his throat slashed after inmates were unlocked from their cells this morning.

Watkins was previously attacked at the jail in August 2023 by three other prisoners, an incident that left him with neck injuries which required hospital treatment. England’s HMP Wakefield is considered one of the country’s most notorious prisons, and dubbed the “Monster Mansion” as its residents include serial killers, murderers and pedophiles.

Watkins was jailed in December 2013 after admitting a string of horrific sex offenses – including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby; a trial judge later said that the charges against Watkins “plumbed new depths of depravity.” (During trial, it was revealed that the password to encrypted files on Watkins’ computer was “I FUK KIDZ.”)

Watkins was initially arrested in September 2012 after police executed a drugs search warrant at his home in Pontypridd and seized a large number of computers, mobile phones and storage devices.

The rape and murder of Jennifer Lee Ertman and Elizabeth Christine Peña, two teenage girls from Houston, Texas, aged 14 and 16, respectively, occurred on June 24, 1993. The murder of the two girls made headlines in Texas newspapers due to the nature of the crime and the new law resulting from the murder that allows families of the victims to view the execution of the murderers. The case was also notable in that the state of Texas rejected attempts by the International Court of Justice to halt the perpetrators' executions.

...Realizing that the girls would be capable of identifying them, Cantu ordered the members to kill the girls. He told Venancio Medellín to stay behind because he was "too little to watch." The other gang members forced the girls into a wooded area. Both girls were strangled to death. Following Cantu's initial instruction, Villarreal first shouted, "Get on your knees, bitch!" to Ertman. O'Brien and Villarreal strangled Ertman with O'Brien's red nylon belt before breaking the belt. Both completed the act by strangling the girl with a shoelace in Peña's presence.

As Ertman was murdered, Peña was forced to watch her friend's death as other gang members held a ligature around her neck. At first, Peña desperately attempted to appease her abusers as she wept, offering her phone number so they could "get together". She then attempted to flee. In response, Cantu tackled and repeatedly kicked the girl in her face and body, dislodging three teeth and fracturing several ribs.

Cantu, José Medellín, and Pérez then strangled Peña to death with shoelaces. The gang members stomped on both girls' throats to ensure their deaths.

Socialist New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani claimed Stephen Colbert's late night CBS show asked him to 'play a game' that explained his opinions on Gaza.

Mamdani, currently favored to win in November, has made headlines for his anti-Israel views in addition to his far left economic plans for the Big Apple.

Set to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert before the primary, Mamdani was asked to creatively discuss his views.

Prior to the interview, Jewish leaders had urged Colbert to press Mamdani over his refusal 'to condemn calls to "globalize the intifada" - incendiary language in which he has publicly trafficked for at least a decade.'

The New Yorker reported that before Mamdani and rival-turned-ally Brad Lander went on stage, the producers wanted to ask if they could play a 'thumbs up or thumbs down' on the conflict.

Examples included giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down to Hamas or simply a Palestinian state.

'I just couldn’t believe what was happening, that a genocide could be distilled into a late-night game,' Mamdani said.

His handlers couldn't believe it either, wondering why the famously liberal Colbert wouldn't ask him about things like being the first-ever Muslim mayoral candidate in the city's history.

The Daily Mail has reached out to CBS for comment.

During the interview, Colbert, 61, asked Mamdani and Lander about Israel and whether they believe it 'has the right to exist.'

'Yes, like all nations. I believe it has a right to exist, and a responsibility also to uphold international law,' Mamdani said.

Colbert faced backlash for failing to ask Mamdani tougher questions about his stance on Israel.

Instead, Colbert simply stated that some voters are 'very upset by some of the things that you've said in the past,' adding that 'they are afraid that your mayorship would actually lead to increased antisemitism.'

The question teed up Mamdani, 33, to denounce antisemitism while not addressing his past statements, which have included calls to 'globalize the intifada' that some say is a call to violence against Jews.

Critics of the interview ripped Colbert for not more forcefully broaching the subject of Mamdani's past remarks.

The news comes as the first phase of a new peace deal between Israel and Hamas brokered by Donald Trump appears to be underway.

Trump claimed the Israel and Hamas peace deal would bring an everlasting peace to the Middle East, where residents have been dancing in the streets celebrating the anticipated end to the two-year-long war.

'On Monday the hostages come back,' the president said triumphantly on Friday evening, characterizing the deal as an 'everlasting success.'

He also asserted that not only that Gaza would be rebuilt, but 'the entire Middle East' as part of the process - and claimed the rehabilitation of the war zone would be paid for by investments from neighboring Middle Eastern states.

'I can tell you that I saw Israel dancing in the streets, but they were dancing in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and UAE, and many, many countries,' the Republican stated, adding that officials in Iran, Russia, Egypt, Qatar were also eager to support the deal.

The Israeli military announced on Friday that the ceasefire is now in effect across Gaza city.

Israel's government approved the deal last night as thousands of Gaza citizens now roam the war-torn city. Israeli forces pulled back in accordance with the deal approved by the government….

CAIRO (AP) — Three Qatari diplomats were killed in a car crash Saturday while heading to Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, health officials said.

Two other diplomats were injured when their vehicle overturned about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh, the officials said.

The diplomats, who were from the Qatari protocol team, were traveling to the city ahead of a high-level summit celebrating a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

Qatar mediated the ceasefire along with Egypt and the U.S. Turkey also joined the negotiations earlier this month in Sharm el-Sheikh, which was capped by a ceasefire and the release of hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Sharm el-Sheikh will host the summit to be co-chaired by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The statement said more than two dozen world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and United Nations Secretary General António Guterres will attend the summit.

A recent announcement of a “mandatory” digital ID is not unique to the UK. New digital ID laws have been implemented across the world in recent months, suggesting a broader effort to establish a global system of control.

For years, Aman Jabbi, a Silicon Valley technology veteran, has been warning about the creation of a “digital prison” through the integration of advanced surveillance technologies – including facial recognition, artificial intelligence and a network of surveillance devices – which will enable continuous monitoring and individual identification.

The long-term plan is that “facial recognition will be used to unlock your digital identity,” he said.

In 2025, the British state announced it was about to impose a “mandatory” digital ID on the population, without which they would not be able to work.

The arrogant duplicity behind the roll-out has been jaw-dropping.

The name “Britcard,” for instance, is meant to resonate with feelings of national pride and suggest that it is all about proving how British you are in the face of all those illegal immigrants that somehow keep sneaking into the country.

But the authorities are laughing in the faces of what they consider to be a hopelessly gullible public – the “Brit” in fact stands for “Biometric Registration Identification Tracking”.

And it is not the specific British response to a specific British problem that it is being sold as.

As Jason Bassler points out, new digital ID laws have been lined up and pushed through all across the world in the last three months, from Mexico to Thailand, from Switzerland to Papua New Guinea.

The federal agency that oversees workplace safety exempted healthcare employers from reporting workers’ adverse reactions to mandated COVID-19 vaccines, according to a healthcare industry whistleblower who alerted The Defender

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued the directive on June 28, 2021, to encourage vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The directive also stated that OSHA, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, would not track workers’ COVID-19 vaccine adverse events — even though it acknowledged that the vaccines may cause injuries that would require employees to take time off work.

OSHA continued to track reactions to other vaccines.

A Labor Department official confirmed for The Defender that OSHA didn’t track COVID-19 vaccine injuries, and said those policies remained in place until February 2025.

OSHA also outlined its COVID-19 reporting policy on its website’s frequently asked questions page for COVID-19, which stated:

“OSHA does not wish to have any appearance of discouraging workers from receiving COVID-19 vaccination, and also does not wish to disincentivize employers’ vaccination efforts. As a result, OSHA does not intend to enforce … recording requirements to require any employers to record worker side effects from COVID-19 vaccination.”
