The head of Britain’s Prevent antiterrorism programme has resigned following the agency’s failings over the Southport stabbing spree last year.

Michael Stewart left his post after a report commissioned soon after Axel Rudakubana killed three girls and injured eight others at a Taylor Swift-inspired dance class found that Prevent had “prematurely” dismissed the threat posed by him on each of the three occasions he was referred by teachers to the programme between 2019 and 2021.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted systematic failures over the handling of Rudakubana’s Prevent referral for concerns about his obsession with violence but was never recommended for further intervention.

He made clear that the failure of state institutions “frankly leaps off the page”.

The Prevent team had further been criticised over allegations it had underplayed the threats posed by Islamic extremists.

Rudakubana, 18, who was born in Wales to Rwandan parents, was jailed for 52 years after admitting three murders, 10 attempted murders and possessing the poison ricin and a terrorist manual.

He made clear that the failure of state institutions “frankly leaps off the page”.

The Prevent team had further been criticised over allegations it had underplayed the threats posed by Islamic extremists.

Experts have also told The National that much of the government's approach to deradicalisation in its Prevent programme needs to rapidly change to deal with the rise of the new extremism.

The organisation was “underfunded and likely out of date”, and, along with the law, had to be “brought into the 21st century,” said Gareth Westwood, of the Sibylline intelligence company.

Furthermore, Jonathan Hall, the UK government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, stated that Prevent was too focused on people with extreme ideologies, rather than those “obsessed by violence”.

The government of Texas administered 15,000 more measles vaccinations this year compared to 2024 — and now there’s a growing measles outbreak that has surpassed the total number of cases reported across the entire United States last year.

The news follows this website’s February report that measles cases in Gaines County, Texas, had jumped 242% following a health district campaign to hand out free measles vaccines.

A measles outbreak after higher vaccination rates in Texas calls into question the shot’s claimed effectiveness and underlying design.

Between January 1 and March 16 last year, 158,000 measles vaccines were administered in the state, according to CBS News. During the same time this year, 173,000 measles doses were given. There are now more measles cases in Texas than there were across the United States in all of 2024. On Friday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported 309 cases have been identified in the state since late January.

That’s compared to only 285 cases nationwide last year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.

What’s worse, measles cases in West Texas are “still on the rise” and “local public health officials say they expect the virus to keep spreading for at least several more months and that the official case number is likely an undercount,” according to CBS.

The numbers don’t lie — Texas is witnessing a record-breaking measles outbreak in the wake of increased vaccination efforts.

Bianco, a law-and-order conservative, becomes the highest profile Republican to join a race already crowded with Democrats. All hope to succeed Newsom, who is serving his second term and is barred from running again.

The race remains wide open, and speculation continues to swirl over whether former Vice President Kamala Harris will jump into the contest. Harris, who lost to Trump in the November presidential election, lives in Brentwood and has had a successful career in California politics, serving as San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general and representing the state in the U.S. Senate.

Bianco plans to announce his official candidacy on Monday, President’s Day, in Riverside. His decision to jump into the race was first reported by Politico and confirmed by The Times.

2026 gubernatorial campaign

On February 21, Bianco attended a press conference in San Diego with Republican leaders to promote State Senate Republican Minority Leader Brian Jones' proposed bill SB554 to weaken the California Senate Bill 54 of 2017 that limits law enforcement's ability to cooperate with ICE.[19][20]

Ukraine Dictator Zelensky Rejects ANOTHER US Deal, Refuses To Negotiate With Russia

Ukrainian dictator Volodymyr Zelensky said during a Friday press conference that he won't recognize past US military aid as loans, after Washington sent a new draft of the minerals deal to Kiev.

"Ukraine received a new agreement project from the U.S. regarding mineral resources, which is an entirely different document from the previous framework agreement," said Zelensky, adding "Ukraine will not recognize US military aid as debt." "We are grateful for the support, but this is not a credit, and we will not allow it," Zelensky continued.

The Ukrainian president also said that they are unwilling to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin "or with someone who would represent Russia," and instead said "I think that if there are people, I think there are businesses in Russia, and they have many different regions, including serious business areas. I think that we would communicate with them if they have a vision of how to end the war."

Lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a People's Deputy from Ukraine's Holos party, said he obtained a new draft of the mineral deal from the US, dated March 23 - which he says would grant the Untied States access to all existing and future mineral deposits across Ukraine, along with oil and gas throughout the country. According to Zheleznyak, the new agreement contains "not even a hint" of security guarantees - though he did note that the revised draft wasn't final, "and I hope that the Ukrainian side will demand and achieve significant changes to it."

It has become crystal clear, by now, there is nothing the US government can do anymore. Trump's administration has exhausted all efforts and incredible patience to help end this senseless war and bring about a peace deal. As long as someone like Zelensky is running Ukraine, there will not be peace, because truth be exposed, he does not want the war to end. District Judge James Boasberg, already under fire for blocking the Trump administration’s deportation orders targeting gang-affiliated illegal immigrants, is now facing a new wave of scrutiny—this time, for his daughter’s involvement with a controversial nonprofit linked to MS-13 and other criminal aliens.

Katharine Boasberg, the daughter of the Obama-appointed judge, works for Partners for Justice, an organization that bills itself as a defender of the Sixth Amendment. However, critics say the group is offering aid and comfort to dangerous illegal immigrants, including violent gang members.

What’s more, the organization is bankrolled in large part by taxpayer-funded grants, including those from USAID and other government sources, according to Amuse on X.

Partners for Justice claims it doesn’t provide legal advice directly—but instead embeds “Client Advocates” with public defenders to assist with housing, employment, and social services. In reality, many see it as a backdoor effort to undermine immigration enforcement, particularly when dealing with individuals accused of violent crimes.

“This case presents fundamental questions about who decides how to conduct sensitive national-security-related operations in this country – the President, through Article II, or the judiciary,” Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris told the Supreme Court. “The Constitution supplies a clear answer: the President. The republic cannot afford a different choice.”

The administration carried out the deportations anyway, sparking a legal battle that could soon reach the Supreme Court.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. joined West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey Friday in support of legislation the governor signed this week banning seven food dyes from school lunches at the start of this school year.

Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins also praised the move.

“Governor Morrisey is a visionary, and willing to cut through the DC noise to help families move toward healthier behaviors and healthier outcomes,” Rollins said.

The Mountain State’s ban begins August 1 and applies to Red Dye No. 3, Red Dye No. 40, Yellow Dye No. 5, Yellow Dye No. 6, Blue Dye No. 1, Blue Dye No. 2 and Green Dye No. 3.

California and Virginia have passed comparable bills, but neither are as far-reaching as West Virginia’s. California’s legislation, signed into law by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in September, won’t go into effect until the last day of 2027 and only prohibits six of the seven dyes banned from school lunches in West Virginia; Virginia’s bans all seven and takes effect in July.

In August, the seven dyes will be banned from school lunches. But in Jan 2028, the dyes plus two preservatives — butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and propylparaben — will be banned from all food sold in the state.

Morrisey also said he plans to request a waiver excluding soda from products that can be bought using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program dollars.

“West Virginia is leading the nation in passing a bill to clean up our food supply and submitting a waiver to remove soda from SNAP,” Kennedy said. “This state leadership adds leverage to the Trump administration’s drive to Make America Healthy Again. I urge every Governor to follow West Virginia’s lead.”

Dozens of other states have introduced or are considering similar “MAHA” legislation to “clean up our food system, improve school lunches, submit waivers to SNAP and promote patient choice,” according to Kennedy.

West Virginia is a state that has “long faced some of the nation’s most pressing public health challenges,” according to an HHS press release. It’s among the worst states for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and drug overdoses. But according to Morrisey, it’s embracing the direction provided by Kennedy and HHS, under his leadership.

“West Virginia is strongly embracing the Make America Healthy Again movement,” said West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey. “We’re getting junk out of our foods, promoting exercise, and putting nutrition back into SNAP. Thank you to Secretary Kennedy and Secretary Rollins for their commitment to ensuring the next generation of Americans lives a healthier and happier life.”

Health and Human Services announced a major restructuring Thursday, shrinking its workforce from roughly 82,000 to 62,000, consolidating 28 divisions into 15 (including the new Administration for a Healthy America) and reducing its regional offices from 10 to five.
