George Soros’ Open Society Foundations to lay off 40% of staff under son’s new leadership'''

"NEW YORK (AP) — Several human rights organizations are concerned about Open Society Foundations plans to lay off 40% of their global staff — the nonprofit’s second major cut in three years — as billionaire investor George Soros hands over leadership to his son.

“We are most concerned for social justice movements, which now have to wait for the impact on their sustainability,” said Kellea Miller, executive director of the Human Rights Funders Network. “In the field of philanthropy, decisions at the top can have an outsized ripple effect on those enacting change.”

Open Society Foundations, the umbrella organization for Soros’ charitable work, said its board of directors “approved significant changes to the Foundations’ operating model.” The layoffs will comply with local regulations, the foundations said, but they have not said where or when they will take place.

“This will involve some difficult decisions,” said Mark Arena, a spokesperson for the Open Society Foundations. ”We anticipate that implementing the proposed new model would involve the redesign and retooling of our existing operations, and a substantial reduction in headcount of no less than 40% globally.”

Then, Victor Orban, now Hungary’s prime minister, demonized him as a shadowy figure seeking to undermine Europe’s predominantly Christian majority through supporting migration, among other issues.

According to data from the nonprofit Candid, the largest organizations OSF currently funds in Europe, outside of the local independent branches of its foundation, include the human rights campaigner Global Witness, policy group European Council on Foreign Relations and the advocacy group Roma Education Fund. The fund said it was aware of the layoff announcement and credited OSF as being the biggest private donor for Roma-led organizations across Europe. Global Witness said it was grateful for OSF’s support."

Under pressure from MAGA supporters, President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Attorney General Pam Bondi should release "whatever she thinks is credible" on the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Trump, speaking to reporters as he left the White House, said he had received a "very quick briefing" on the Justice Department and FBI review of the Epstein files. The briefing took place before the release of the DOJ and FBI memo last week.

The review found no evidence the deceased financier kept a "client list" of associates and no further charges are expected. The department also released hours of footage as part of its review, which officials say further confirmed Epstein died by suicide while in custody in his jail cell in Manhattan in 2019.

ABC News' Katherine Faulders asked the president what Bondi told him about the review, "specifically, did she tell you at all that your name appeared in the files?"

"No, no, she's – she's given us just a very quick briefing," Trump responded before making baseless claims the files were created by some of his political foes.

"And in terms of the credibility of the different things that they've seen, and I would say that, you know, these files were made up by Comey, they were made up by Obama, they were made up by the Biden – and you know, we and we went through years of that with the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, with all of the different things that we had to go through," Trump said.

"We've gone through years of it, but she's handled it very well, and it's going to be up to her," Trump said of Bondi. "Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release."

Bondi, when asked about Trump's comments to ABC News, said she hadn't yet seen the president's comments but added that the DOJ and FBI memo "speaks for itself."

Trump is facing outrage among his MAGA base over the administration's handling of the Epstein files. It's also led to some infighting within his administration, as Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino had a fiery confrontation with Bondi over the matter, ABC News reported.

Amid calls for her resignation, Bondi said defiantly on Tuesday: "I'm going to be here for as long as the president wants me here, and I believe he's made that crystal clear."

When asked about the rift between her and Bongino, Bondi said she wouldn't discuss personnel matters.

"I was with [FBI] Director [Kash] Patel all morning and we are committed to keeping America safe, making America safe, working with our incredible partners at DEA, FBI, ATF, U.S. Marshals to do everything we can to make America safe and that's what we're focused on," she said at an event at the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Late Tuesday, speaking to reporters as he returned from a trip to Pittsburgh, Trump was asked why he thought his supporters have been so interested in the Epstein story when he's urged them to move on.

"I don't understand it – why they would be so interested. He's dead for a long time. He was never a big factor in terms of life. I don't understand what the interest or what the fascination is. I really don't and the credible information has been given," he said.

"But I don't understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody. It's pretty boring stuff. It's sordid, but it's boring, and I don't understand why it keeps going," he added. "I think really only pretty bad people, including fake news, want to keep something like like that going. But credible information, let them give it. Anything that's credible, I would say, let them have it."

Trump had sought to quiet the revolt over the weekend by posting a lengthy defense of Bondi and urging his administration to focus on other priorities.

But the comments continued to pour in, including warnings from some of Trump's top defenders that the issue is not going away and could have consequences in next year's midterm elections.

Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law and a Fox News host, told MAGA influencer Benny Johnson on Monday that she believed there did need to be "more transparency" regarding the administration's handling of the Epstein case.

Trump was asked on Tuesday what he thought about her remarks.

"The attorney general's handled that very well. She's really done a very good job," Trump said.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are calling on Republicans to compel Justice Department leaders to testify about their handling of matters related to the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Their demand, which House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is unlikely to entertain, follows the DOJ’s announcement that there was no credible evidence of a “client list”or that Epstein blackmailed powerful people to whom he trafficked women. The issue has united an unlikely coalition of broad swaths of President Donald Trump’s base and Democrats, who are pushing for greater transparency from the administration.

Judiciary Democrats want Jordan to invite, or if necessary subpoena, four DOJ officials to testify: Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino. Jordan has broad subpoena power as committee chair.

“We write to request that the Committee on the Judiciary quickly conduct a bipartisan hearing on the Trump Administration’s recent handling of the Jeffrey Epstein matter,” the Democrats wrote. “The Trump DOJ and FBI’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein matter, and President Trump’s suddenly shifting positions, have not restored anyone’s trust in the government but have rather raised profound new questions about their own conduct while increasing public paranoia related to the investigation.”

Without a majority in Congress, Democrats have floundered in their efforts to compel further disclosures from the Trump administration. In one unsuccessful vote, a Republican — Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina — sided with Democrats on the House Rules Committee Monday to allow a floor vote on a measure that would force the release of Epstein-related materials.
