Earth Makes Appearances in GOES-19 CCOR-1 Imagery

CCOR-1 is a unique instrument being the first operational dedicated coronagraph to support space weather forecasting.

It is also the first coronagraph to fly in geostationary orbit around Earth, and this leads to a number of unique features to its observations.

Other coronagraphs have observed from the Lagrange-1 point, 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth in the direction of the Sun, well beyond the orbit of the Moon.

Since CCOR-1 rides on the GOES-19 satellite, well within the Moon’s orbit, the Moon sometimes makes appearances in the field of view. The combined motion of GOES-19 and the Moon can make it seem to have curved or even looping paths.

Another consequence of its proximity to Earth is sunlight that is reflected from the Earth’s natural albedo (e.g. clouds, snow, ice, oceans, etc.) can impact CCOR-1 observations.

This reflected sunlight, called Earthshine, impacts CCOR-1 observations primarily during sunrise hours and the degree of the impact depends on the time of year.

The effects are most pronounced around the equinoxes in March and September and gradually decay into the solstices.

During periods around the equinoxes the Earth can block the sun from CCOR-1’s field of view and in difference images CCOR-1 is sensitive enough to show the nighttime city lights on the planet below.

And of course, the CCOR-1 will show the usual moving objects in space, such as planets, comets, satellites, and maybe, once in a while, a tiny piece of space debris.

There are also static or fixed artifacts, such as the dark “collar” around the base of the occulting disk that can be seen when the background is bright. Scientists are working to mitigate Earthshine.

This is either a hoax, or a brilliant message — I still think it is terribly interesting. Why would the numbers lead to this? No way to tell — but an interesting READ — so can a HOAX be a LEAK so that the source remains anonymous?

The REASON I am posting this is because 2 other 3I/Atlas leaks form my source that looked FAKE turned out to be real only weeks later.

NASA also closed the Solar Dynamic Observatory — so we cannot see an animation of 3I/Atlas as it is so close to the sun now when we could have observed some of these alleged flashes.

Also, note the Mars Hirise images of 3I/Atlas were blocked starting October 1 and it is still down giving ample time for these best quality images of it to be manipulated to cover up its structure:

$20 million NASA mission to visit 'God of Chaos' asteroid saved from budget cuts in last-minute decision

NASA's plans to fly a spaceship alongside a potentially hazardous asteroid in 2029 will continue — for the next year, at least.

After threats of mission cancellation, the OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft received a last-minute $20 million allocation in the House budget bill to continue basic operations for the next fiscal year.

The fates of 18 other NASA missions slated to stop operations on Oct. 1, however, remain unclear due to the ongoing government shutdown.

"We were incredibly relieved and grateful," Dani Mendoza DellaGiustina, principal investigator of OSIRIS-APEX at the University of Arizona, told Live Science in an email.

The news was first announced Oct. 7 at a meeting of the National Academies' Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Sciences, Ars Technica reported.

OSIRIS-APEX stands for "Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security — Apophis Explorer".

The mission is slated to observe the quarter-mile-wide (400-meter) asteroid Apophis, which was once believed to pose a minor threat to Earth during an upcoming close encounter in 2029.

More observations fortunately showed that Apophis — which is named after an ancient Egyptian god associated with chaos — will instead fly safely by Earth.

It will come very close, however: its trajectory will bring it inside the orbit of geostationary satellites, roughly 22,000 miles (36,000 km) away, potentially making it visible to the naked eye.

But as Apophis crosses our planet's pathway periodically, there's still a risk of a direct impact in the distant future.

OSIRIS-APEX uses the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft that snatched a small sample of the asteroid Bennu in 2020, and brought the precious dust to Earth in a separate return capsule, providing critical information about our early solar system.

The core spacecraft remains healthy, and both DellaGiustina and NASA have emphasized it will be cheaper to use an existing space mission to observe Apophis than to launch something new.

"Apophis is one of the most compelling near-Earth asteroids we've ever discovered," DellaGiustina said.

"By studying Apophis during and after its Earth encounter, we have a unique opportunity to understand how close planetary flybys reshape small bodies: from seismic shaking and surface landslides, to changes in rotation and orbit."

Nevertheless, in May the Trump administration placed OSIRIS-APEX on a list of 19 NASA missions that they intended to cancel, as part of sweeping cutbacks that would see the agency's budget slashed by nearly 25%, from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion.

The fate of the other 18 missions remains uncertain; the U.S. government has been in shutdown since Oct. 1 after lawmakers in Washington, D.C. failed to agree on this year's fiscal budget.

The NASA astronauts who were 'stranded' in space for months have finally revealed the truth about what really happened.

In March this year, astronauts Barry 'Butch' Wilmore and Sunita 'Sunni' Williams were finally brought back down to Earth after being 'stuck' on the International Space Station (ISS) since June.

What was meant to be a simple eight-day mission turned into a whopping 286 days as technical issues with their return spacecraft canceled the trip home.

Now, the duo have revealed what exactly went wrong.

Speaking to 60 Minutes Australia, Sunni said their trip out, at least initially, went as smooth as possible.

"The first day was awesome," she said. "The first day the spacecraft worked as designed and flying it was terrific.

"So when we woke up the second day, we were all excited about a rendezvous to the space station and we could see the space station."

However, it took a turn for the worst when the NASA pros quickly realized there was something wrong as they struggled to manoeuvre.

Sunni explained: "We knew on the second day, before we started losing thrusters, that things were not acting correctly.

"The spacecraft was working hard to keep us on the trajectory of the space station, but it wasn't acting like it was designed to."

Then, they started to lose its thrusters and 'one after another' the 60-year-old said they knew 'something was absolutely wrong'.

Recalling the moment Butch, a former US Navy pilot, decided to make the tricky landing. He told the outlet: "We were in a bad situation, no doubt.

"In the history of human space flight, there's only been a few occasions that the spacecraft has lost the ability to fully control in all six degrees of freedom.

"So, you're in a craft that you can barely control. You know, you need to dock, or you might not have a ride back home.

"We had to dock," he added. "We had to dock and if we didn't dock, I wasn't sure in the situation we were in that we could actually even make it back to Earth."

Butch said the ISS would be their 'safe haven' if they could dock.

It was later revealed a helium leak caused the thrusters to fail, a scenario that had never been presented to them while training in the simulator.

As we know, Butch and Sunni managed to safely dock at the ISS, though they had little clue how or when they would be able to get back home.

Fortunately, nine and a half months later, they were brought home aboard the SpaceX Dragon aircraft.

Comet C/2025 R2 SWAN with Messier 16 and Messier 17

The beautiful comet C/2025 R2 SWAN is putting a wonderful show out there, thanks to the deep-sky friends it is meeting.

The image above comes from the average of five, six-second exposures, remotely taken with the Samyang 135+Paramount ME+ZWO ASI 6200MC Pro robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy.

“Last night I was in Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, under the most starry sky of peninsular Italy.

My trip served, first of all, to carry out some routine maintenance on the complex scientific equipment of the Virtual Telescope Project in preparation for the winter season.

But the deeper motivation was the chance to observe the comet of the moment, C/2025 A6 Lemmon.

I had with me my trusty 12×70 binoculars, perfect for this kind of experience.

After spending the afternoon cleaning, lubricating and checking the components of the four robotic telescopes installed there – with all the related systems – at dusk I prepared the instruments I intended to use to capture both comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon and the more modest C/2025 R2 SWAN.

The latter, far less bright than the first, is currently crossing the region of the sky between Serpens Cauda and Sagittarius, where the Milky Way beautifully showcases some of the finest deep-sky jewels, such as the splendid nebulae Messier 16 and Messier 17.

These very nebulae were to be “visited” in perspective by SWAN.

The afternoon had been cloudy, then the sky cleared up, though without guarantees. When it was dark enough, I aimed both the 250mm astrograph and the wide-field 135mm astrograph at Lemmon, then directed the latter toward SWAN and the nebulae I mentioned.

While the instruments were collecting data, I was able to admire Lemmon through the binoculars: seeing it with my own eyes, with its long, diaphanous tail, was truly moving.

Toward the southwest, where SWAN was located, clouds arrived, so I had to stop the imaging session after capturing only a few frames.

Yet, thanks to the site’s extraordinary sky, when processing the data, the image of SWAN—accompanied by M16 and M17—really does justice to the beauty of the heavens”.

Rare double comet event to light up the October night sky

It’s time for stargazers to turn their telescopes toward the night sky. October is setting the stage for two cosmic visitors.

Two newly discovered comets, C/2025 A6 Lemmon and C/2025 R2 SWAN, will sweep across the sky this month.

C/2025 R2 (SWAN) will make its closest approach on October 20, coming within 24 million miles of Earth. Just a day later, on October 21, C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) will sweep past at about 55 million miles.

As they draw closer to Earth, the comets are expected to glow brightly enough to be seen with the naked eye.

Skywatchers in the northern hemisphere are in for a rare double treat. Comet Lemmon has already been lighting up northern skies for weeks.

Comet SWAN, once visible only south of the equator, is beginning to appear in northern skies too.

A once-in-a-millennium opportunity

An astronomical observatory sits at 9,100 feet atop Mount Lemmon, operated by the University of Arizona. During one of the routine surveys, a team of researchers spotted something new in the sky.

The celestial object appeared so dim that astronomers initially mistook it for an asteroid. When they examined the images later, they spotted a faint tail and a coma.

This led them to confirm that what they had spotted was actually a comet, as asteroids do not have comas.

Comets that are visible from Earth

Comets are small, icy bodies made up of rock, frozen gases, and organic molecules orbiting around the Sun. As they approach the Sun, their surface starts heating up, turning all the solids into gases.

As a result, a thin, glowing cloud of gas and dust forms around the comet’s nucleus, which is called a coma. The coma can expand thousands of kilometers across and is often what makes a comet visible from Earth.

Without the coma, astronomers might have missed a once-in-a-millennium event. Comet Lemmon hasn’t visited the inner solar system in about 1,350 years.

A green visitor from far away

Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) was discovered using the Solar Wind Anisotropies instrument (SWAN) aboard NASA’s solar observation spacecraft. Amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezugly spotted it on September 11, 2025.

The discovery came just one day before the comet reached perihelion, its closest point to the Sun. Until then, it had remained hidden by the Sun’s intense glare.

Experts estimate Comet SWAN’s orbital period around the Sun to be approximately 20,000 years. It likely hails from the distant Oort Cloud, a vast reservoir of icy bodies far beyond Pluto.

B-1 Bomber Task Force Deploys to Misawa, Japan

Four B-1B bombers from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas have deployed to Misawa Air Base, Japan, in a Bomber Task Force, Global Strike Command said. The aircraft are likely to participate in exercises with Japan in the coming weeks.

The BTF marks the second time B-1s have deployed to Misawa this year, the first being in April. During that deployment, they stayed a month while operating with Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and the F-35s that are already stationed at Misawa.

n 2024, the Air Force sent BTFs overseas some 33 times, including 10 each to the Indo-Pacific, Europe, and the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. A few others went to Southwest Asia and on deployments to North and South America.

The Air Force is not describing the planned activities of this BTF, citing operational security. This marks a change from previous BTFs, in which the broad objectives of the deployment are announced, including the various partner or allied air forces with which the bombers will train.

The purpose of BTFs is typically to develop procedures for U.S. bombers to operate with allied air units, to showcase the ability of bombers to deploy worldwide, and to present “messaging” to potential adversaries.

Japan is about to undertake a large-scale, regional wargame, set to run from October 20-31. The massive exercise will focus on the Sea of Japan, Japan’s northern coast, and in the south, between the southernmost Japanese islands and Taiwan.

The U.S. and Australia are set to take part, toward improving their interoperability with Japanese forces, the Defense Ministry said.

A Defense Ministry press release said the exercise is meant to improve the “joint operational capabilities” of Japan’s ground, sea and air self-defense forces.

The Air Force sent BTFs overseas some 48 times from mid-2024 to mid-2025, former head of Global Strike Command Gen. Thomas Bussiere said in a July interview with Air and Space Forces Magazine.

Another 12 such missions involved flying overseas but returning to the U.S. without landing in any other country, he said. Most of those he described as “cross-combatant command” events, in which the bombers flew through several regional commander areas of responsibility.

“Our allies and partners love integrating with our bombers,” Bussiere said in a June appearance with the Atlantic Council.

The allies “love having a bomber show the American flag over their country or integrating with their air forces, or exercising with their ground forces.”

Science and maintenance work continued this week aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but updates regarding those activities are still all but halted by the U.S. government shutdown.

Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui's social media posts were the exception.

Orbital observation

"Isn't this one of the top five stunning views among all the photos taken from the 'Kibo' window? Self-praise here…" wrote Kimiya Yui, an Expedition 73 flight engineer, with a laugh from on board the International Space Station.

"The ISS took on a different posture than usual, so the view from the window changed as well," explained Yui.

That post actually features two shots. In both, a band of our galaxy, the Milky Way, is seen above Earth's horizon, with the space station's solar arrays and the Kibo exposed facility in the foreground.

One image also shows dancing green and red auroras, while the other captures a darker night sky. "[It was a] special view that I wanted everyone to see, so I pushed through my work early to make time and took this photo," said Yui.

Astronaut activity

JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui has spent this week preparing for the arrival and capture of his country's first next-generation HTV-X cargo vehicle. Liftoff is targeted for Monday (Oct. 20).

"I'm waiting for you! I'll catch you gently, so don't worry!" wrote Yui to the resupply ship still on Earth on Friday (Oct. 17).

Yui will use the space station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to grab hold of the HTV-X1 spacecraft once it is in proximity of the manipulator's reach.

As of Friday (Oct. 17), there are 7 people aboard the International Space Station:

'Willie' McCool," berthed to the Unity node.

As of Friday, the space station has been continuously crewed for 24 years, 11 months and 15 days.

Zelensky says he hates Putin

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin “hates” him — and that the feeling is mutual. He made the comments after a high-profile meeting at the White House on Friday.

“Putin hates me,” he told reporters in Washington, DC. When a reporter asked Zelensky, “Do you hate him?” he replied that it would be strange if he had a different opinion about those who “try to kill all of us.”

“I have the same attitude (towards) this man,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader backed Trump’s calls for an immediate ceasefire along the current front lines.

He declined to reveal whether the US would supply Kiev with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, but hinted that there has not been any progress on the matter. “We have to work on it more,” he said.

Putin has said he is open to meeting with Zelensky, but only in the final stages of negotiations after a peace treaty is ready to be signed.

He once again questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, noting that his five-year term as president expired in 2024 and that Zelensky refused to call a new election, citing martial law.

Moscow has said that for a ceasefire to work, Ukraine must withdraw from the parts of Russian regions that it controls, and the West must end military aid to Kiev. Putin has also demanded that Ukraine recognize Russia’s new borders and abandon its plans to join NATO.

Russian Iskander strike hits Ukrainian drone launch site – MOD

Moscow’s forces have hit a site used by the Ukrainian military to launch long-range kamikaze drones against Russia, the defense ministry in Moscow has announced.

As many as 65 unmanned Lyuty (‘Cruel’) class aerial vehicles were destroyed in the attack, as well as four trucks, five launchers and some 30 Ukrainian soldiers, including drone operators, according to a ministry Telegram post on Friday.

The site, in area near the village of Martovoe located some 50 kilometers east of the city of Kharkov in northeastern Ukraine, was targeted with an Iskander ballistic missile, the ministry said, releasing footage of what it claims is the attack.

Lyuty class drones reportedly have a range of 1,000 kilometers and can carry explosive payload weighing up to 75 kilograms.

Kiev has routinely launched drone raids deep into Russia in recent months, targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas in attacks that often led to civilian casualties. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of “terrorism” over the strikes.

Ukrainian drone strikes in this month alone have killed six civilians in Belgorod and Kherson Regions as well as causing a major power outage in Western Russia. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky also threatened Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions with blackouts in October.

Last week, Russia’s state-owned nuclear power plant operator reported an attack on a station in Voronezh Region that was repelled by signal jamming.

Moscow has launched retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian military sites, including drone assembly facilities, in response.

The U.S. military has taken two survivors into custody after they were rescued following a Thursday drone strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean, a Navy official told Fox News.

Two U.S. officials told The Associated Press the strike was the sixth carried out under the Trump administration as it continues targeting smuggling vessels operated by drug cartels.

The vessel was a submersible, long associated with the drug trade, which sits just below the water line. The two survivors were aboard an American warship, the official added.

President Donald Trump later confirmed the attack.

"We attacked a submarine, and that was a drug-carrying submarine built specifically for the transportation of massive amounts of drugs," Trump said Friday while hosting the Ukrainian president at the White House.

Secretary of State Rubio did not dispute that there were survivors, but he repeatedly said details would be forthcoming.

Thursday’s incident marks the first known case of reported survivors since U.S. forces began their campaign of lethal strikes against suspected drug boats.

It was not immediately clear what would be done with the individuals. Fox News Digital has reached out to the State and War departments for comment.

The Thursday strike brings the death toll from the Trump administration’s military campaign against vessels in the region to at least 28. The operations began last month and are part of Trump’s broader effort to dismantle transnational cartels by force.

On Friday, War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new counter-narcotics Joint Task Force within U.S. Southern Command.

The task force aims to "crush the cartels, stop the poison and keep America safe," Hegseth wrote last week on X, formerly Twitter. "The message is clear: If you traffic drugs toward our shores, we will stop you cold."

On Tuesday, Trump highlighted a separate strike that killed six suspected smugglers aboard a vessel off the coast of Venezuela.

"Venezuela is a big purveyor of drugs," Trump told reporters later that day in the Oval Office, accusing the country of sending its "criminals" into the United States.

Drone Smugglers Caught in Major CNF Crackdown Across Lahore Division

The Punjab Counter Narcotics Force (CNF) has uncovered a high-tech drug trafficking network that used drones to move narcotics across the Lahore Division. The breakthrough came after a targeted intelligence operation launched early Friday morning.
