A federal appeals court ruled Monday that the Trump administration can continue its swift deportation efforts of illegal migrants to third countries, overturning a lower court's ruling that the practice was illegal.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit did not give a reason for the ruling but allowed the deportations to continue in a 2-1 decision. The panel also expedited the schedule for the case’s next phase, according to The Hill.
Judge Lara Montecalvo, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, dissented, while Judge Jeffrey Howard, nominated by former President George W. Bush, and Judge Seth Aframe, another Biden nominee, ruled in the majority.
The order comes after U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy directed the Trump administration last month to first try to remove migrants to the country they come from, and provide migrants with a “meaningful opportunity” to contest their deportation if they cannot return to their home country and once a third country is selected.
The order is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court.

In a groundbreaking venture that was under wraps until the beginning of this month, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has created White Stork, a startup set to revolutionize warfare with its development of low-cost kamikaze drones.
Although Storks are normally considered a symbol of peace, there is very little that is peaceful about the objective of this not-yet-publicly announced startup.
The primary objective of this project, which is at the intersection of artificial intelligence and military technology, is to equip Ukraine with cutting-edge drone capabilities in its ongoing conflict with Russia and to develop an American alternative to Chinese drones.
Mass-producible drones
Officially established in August, the company focuses on creating mass-producible drones utilizing AI for visual targeting, specifically designed to operate in environments with disrupted communication caused by GPS jamming.
Despite remaining in stealth mode, the project has become an open secret within the drone community, drawing attention to Schmidt’s involvement and his extensive efforts to support Ukraine’s military capabilities.
Storks are also the national bird of Ukraine.
Departing from traditional arms manufacturing approaches, Schmidt envisions the affordability and military significance of these drones as a pivotal advantage against Russia.
Schmidt’s previous role as the head of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence also provides a backdrop to White Stork’s emergence.
Affordable warfare?
The kamikaze drones developed by White Stork are estimated to be at a mere $400 each and come equipped with a small payload of explosives, Schmidt wrote in the Wall Street Journal in July.

Barbabella refused to disclose the nature of the skin condition Trump had been diagnosed with, however.
This is far from the first time that Trump's team have been subjected to questioning regarding the father-of-five's health.
Since returning to the White House for the second time in January of last year,the right-wing leader has been ceaselessly interrogated over an obscure bruise that sporadically appears on the back of his hands.
Though Trump has repeatedly put this enigma down to aggressive handshaking, and in spite of his administration claiming it's caused by him taking a higher dose of aspirin than usual, some medics have suggested his use of IV vitamin drips.

Araghchi's post followed an Axios report published earlier on Monday, which cited a US official anda source with knowledge of the matter as saying that a direct communications channel between Witkoff and Araghchi had been reactivated in recent days.
Confusion surrounded who may have instigated reported communication
Axios said it was not clear how substantive the messages passed between Araghchi and Witkoff had been, adding it was the first known direct communication between the parties since the United States and Israel launched their war on Iran.
Axios cited itssources as saying Araghchi had sent text messages to Witkoff. It reported the US official said Washington was "not talking" to Tehran.
The Drop Site News outlet had earlier reported that Witkoff sent messages to Araghchi. It quoted Iranian officials as saying the minister was ignoring Witkoff's messages.

Armor-Piercing Ammo Metal Up 557% As China Chokes Supply, War Demand Surges
Tungsten, used in missiles, tank rounds, armor-piercing ammunition, and some smaller-caliber munitions, has surged in price over the last year as China curbed exports and global supplies tightened.
This is a major concern, as multi-front conflicts - from the Middle East to Eastern Europe - are depleting interceptor missile supplies.
Bloomberg cites new data from commodity price reporting agency Fastmarkets showing tungsten prices have surged to $2,250 per metric ton this month, up 557% since Beijing added certain tungsten products to its export control list in February of last year.
"In my 12 years working across the commodity space and dealing with a lot of weird and wonderful metals, I have never seen a market as tight as tungsten is right now, aside from maybe lithium in 2021," George Heppel, vice president of commodity research, told Bloomberg.
He warned, "This isn't like lithium, where there was a huge pipeline of projects that could come online."
The problem with rare earth metals is that China dominates the global market. It controls roughly 79% of global tungsten mined output, which Western companies rely on heavily.
According to Project Blue, a London-based commodity research firm, manufacturers have been searching for alternative supplies since China significantly tightened export controls last year. Chinese shipments of restricted tungsten products were down about 40% last year, the firm said.
The tungsten squeeze highlights why the Trump administration has been furiously rewriting global supply chains away from China, especially with the push to build out domestic rare earth supply chains critical for the military and semiconductor industries.
"The industrial base is desperate for material," said Almonty Industries CEO Lewis Black, whose firm is set to begin commercial production at the site of an idled mine in South Korea and is seeking to develop the first U.S. tungsten mine in a decade.

Bank of America settled a proposed class-action lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein accusers who alleged the bank facilitated the now-dead pedophile's sex-trafficking operation, court records show.
Lawyers for the bank and a group of Epstein accusers told the judge overseeing the case during a pretrial conference last week that they "reached a settlement in principle," according to a Monday update to the case's docket.
The terms of the settlement were not made public.
US District Judge Jed Rakoff, who is overseeing the case, gave a March 27 deadline for the parties to file public documents laying out the settlement's terms, and an April 2 hearing to decide whether to approve them.
"The women entrapped and abused by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell started a monumental reckoning with their brave voices and fearlessness," Sigrid McCawley, an attorney at Boies Schiller Flexner representing the Epstein accusers, said in a comment. "The road to justice for these women has been long and trying. Today's resolution of the case against Bank of America is one more step on the road to much deserved justice."
A representative for Bank of America declined to comment. In previous public statements and court filings, the bank denied wrongdoing.
The settlement scuttles a scheduled deposition for Leon Black, the billionaire ex-CEO of Apollo Global Management, which was set for March 26.
The accusers' lawsuit had alleged that Black's more than $150 million in transfers to Epstein — which Black has said was for financial and estate-planning services — facilitated Epstein's sex-trafficking. Bank of America should have paid closer attention to Black's accounts and any transactions related to Epstein, the lawsuit said.
Black has separately been asked to testify before the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating Epstein, on May 13.
JPMorgan agreed to pay $290 million, and Deutsche Bank agreed to a $75 million payout, to settle similar lawsuits brought by the same group of lawyers representing Epstein victims.
Rakoff previously tossed a parallel lawsuit the attorneys brought against BNY — formerly Bank of New York Mellon Corp. — but allowed portions of the case against Bank of America to move forward.
In an earlier court hearing, Rakoff said he would be disappointed if the cases against BNY and Bank of America didn't go to trial.
"I don't want to discourage you from settling," the judge said. "There are some of my colleagues that think settling is always the way to go. But I'm much more selfish and I would love to see two very good trials."

Tech analysts say the disruption looks less like a technical glitch and more like the targeted throttling of Russia's most popular messaging service and social media site, with an estimated 90 million users.
Prior reported efforts of the Russian government to restrict Telegram, particularly in 2018 and 2020, failed given that users as well as the company were repeatedly successful in bypassing Kremlin measures.

A federal judge in Massachusetts ruled on March 16 that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. illegally appointed 13 new members to an influential vaccine panel beginning last June.
Biden-appointed district Judge Brian Murphy also blocked that panel’s guidance memo revising the childhood immunization schedule and declared its previous votes invalid.
Murphy ruled Kennedy committed “a technical, procedural failure” by skirting around the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to change the vaccine recommendations for children.
He said the government committed a similar mistake by removing the previous members of that committee, and replacing them “without undertaking any of the rigorous screening that had been the hallmark of ACIP member selection for decades.”
The plaintiffs, led by the American Academy of Pediatrics, originally sued after Kennedy ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to stop recommending the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women and healthy children.
The suit was later expanded to challenge the restructuring of the ACIP and its changes to childhood vaccine recommendations.

Refinery in Benicia flaring as it prepares to close

The Valero oil refinery in Benicia, set to close in April, has been flaring due to the planned shutdown of equipment, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said Monday, potentially sending harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.
The oil company did not immediately respond to questions about the flaring, or burning off of gases, including how long it will last.
On social media, Benicia residents have been complaining about bright flames coming from the plant throughout the day and night for several weeks.
Valero’s plant is set to close as the company announced that it could not keep up with the costs of “turning over” the facility, a lengthy and costly maintenance process that requires the plant’s temporary closure.
The plant’s permanent closure will significantly impact Benicia, a town of about 26,000 people that relies heavily on the plant for employment. More than 200 people are expected to lose their jobs at the facility.
State regulators have warned that gas prices could go up once the plant closes, along with a Phillips 66 facility in Southern California, which is also set to shut down in the coming months.

For the second time in less than a year, U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy of Boston has inserted himself between the elected executive branch and its constitutional authority to govern, issuing a sweeping injunction Monday that blocks Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from implementing common-sense reforms to the nation’s childhood vaccine advisory structure. The ruling, which freezes both a revised immunization schedule and Kennedy’s reconstitution of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, is the latest episode in a troubling pattern: a midnight Biden appointee wielding judicial power as a political weapon against a duly elected administration.
Judge Murphy’s record speaks for itself. In the spring of 2025, Murphy issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from deporting violent criminal aliens to third countries. When the Supreme Court stayed that injunction by a vote of 6 to 3, Murphy simply declared that a separate remedial order he had issued was unaffected by the high court’s ruling and continued to block the deportations. The Supreme Court was forced to rebuke him a second time, by a remarkable 7 to 2 margin, warning that further defiance would not be tolerated. Justice Elena Kagan, a liberal, joined that majority rebuke. Even the court’s most left-leaning members could not defend what Murphy had done.
Now the same judge has turned his sights on public health policy, an area squarely within the executive’s discretionary authority. Kennedy, exercising his statutory powers as HHS Secretary, took two reasonable and defensible actions. First, he removed and replaced the members of ACIP, the advisory panel that shapes vaccine recommendations. Second, he oversaw a revision of the childhood immunization schedule, reducing the number of recommended vaccines from 17 to 11. Both actions were consistent with the administration’s mandate to scrutinize federal health policy with fresh eyes, and both reflect the kind of executive reorganization that every incoming administration undertakes as a matter of course.

The Board of Peace – an international body formally established in mid‑January as part of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace roadmap – includes business figures and officials from multiple countries. Critics have questioned its mandate and the absence of Palestinian political representation. The board’s activities have largely been put on hold in recent weeks, as Muslim member states voiced anger over the US‑Israeli bombardment of Iran and debated whether to remain involved.
According to Reuters, citing its sources on Monday, the meeting took place late last week at an undisclosed location in the region and focused on salvaging elements of Trump’s initiative, including a long‑term ceasefire and a reconstruction program overseen by the board. The talks were described as preliminary, with no concrete breakthrough announced.
Hamas officials reportedly used the encounter to demand the reopening of Gaza’s Rafah crossing with Egypt, which Israel shut following its airstrikes on Iran. The militant group reportedly warned that if Rafah remains closed and humanitarian access is not restored, it could walk away from the ceasefire agreements.
Despite the formal truce that ended Israel’s two‑year war in Gaza last October, the IDF has continued to carry out strikes. At least 12 people, including children, were reportedly killed in attacks on Sunday, adding to a post-ceasefire death toll of more than 600. The overall figures exceed 72,000, according to the enclave’s health officials.
The Gaza war erupted after Hamas‑led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. Israel responded with a massive air and ground campaign and a blockade that severely restricted food, fuel and medical supplies, prompting accusations of genocide.
At its inaugural meeting last month, the board pledged more than $7 billion for rebuilding Gaza and promised to deploy thousands of personnel to international stabilization and police forces in the territory. While over two dozen countries have formally joined, major Western powers have mostly declined full membership. Russia has not formally joined but said it had received an invitation and was studying the proposal.
