High country sheriff looking for arsonist who tried to start forest fire

DENVER (KDVR) — The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office is looking for an arsonist who appeared to try starting a forest fire during one of the driest years the county and state have seen.

Firefighters with the National Forest Service on Sunday noticed several burned trees on private property bordering Pike-San Isabel National Forest land west of Clear Creek Reservoir, the sheriff’s office said.

The fire wasn’t actively burning anymore, and the Chaffee County Fire Department and sheriff’s office responded to investigate.

The sheriff’s office said investigators determined someone, or multiple people, attempted to purposely start a forest fire by using an accelerant on the trees. Investigators found the accelerant, likely gasoline, on two trees and a plastic container holding a large amount of the accelerant tied to a third tree.

The fire had thankfully burned itself out before reaching the tree with the hanging accelerant, the sheriff’s office said.

“This is behavior we obviously have zero tolerance for and we will use all resources available to us to protect life and property,” Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich said. “To whomever is responsible, rethink your motives and please consider all the (innocents) you are placing in danger.”

Rohrich asked anyone enjoying the backcountry to be vigilant while visiting and to try and document suspicious activity without placing themselves in danger and report it to the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information can call the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 719-539-2596 and ask to speak to a detective.

This comes as Colorado is facing a historic drought across nearly the entire state, and Chaffee County is having one of its driest years on record.
