There is an s wave. This is the vertical shift of the quake

There is a p wave. The is the combined horizontal motion of the quake.

At epicenter there is only s. Barring obstacles, s spreads uniformly and dissipates exponentially. The p wave spreads like rocking a boat. It goes farther, but fades at the same rate as s.

Inside 5 miles is the real damage radius for any massive earthquake, less proportionally weighted on the Richter score. You can google the mafs. Point is, there is no widespread damage in any of these claims.
