Attorney Drops Bombshell: FBI Hid Hundreds of Seth Rich Files in Secret Room with Burn Bags Intended for Destruction

Attorney Ty Clevenger, who has spent nearly a decade battling the FBI and DOJ for transparency in the Seth Rich case, revealed a stunning new development on X.
Clevenger wrote:
SETH RICH UPDATE: Today an attorney for the government told me that I would soon be getting confirmation that several hundred pages of documents related to Seth Rich were found in a previously-hidden room at FBI headquarters. You may recall that on July 30, 2025, Fox News Digital reported that newly-installed FBI Director Kash Patel and his leadership team had located an unmapped / sealed area within the J. Edgar Hoover Building’s SCIF.
Last year’s Fox report described “burn bags” that contained thousands of pages of classified files intended for destruction, and those files were linked back to the 2016 “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation. Now it appears the Seth Rich records were among the files designated for destruction.
Mind you, I don’t have anything in hand yet. I don’t even know whether the FBI will agree to release a single page of what it found. Nonetheless, any confirmation that the files were in the secret SCIF raises a lot of questions. At the very least, some very high-level people had something to hide.
The FBI originally told me in 2017 that it had no records whatsoever about Seth Rich because it was not involved in the investigation of his death. We were told he died in a “botched robbery” and only the local police were investigating it.
Since that time, the FBI has gradually admitted to possession of several thousand pages of documents about Seth, his work laptop, an image of his personal laptop, and another DVD. Nonetheless, on June 15, 2026, I had to file yet another motion (http://lawflog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026.06.15-Plaintiff-MSJ-stamped.pdf) explaining how the FBI is withholding records in violation of court orders.
If the FBI is still fighting transparency so hard on other fronts (and it is), then why would it acknowledge that records about Seth had been hidden in the SCIF? I don’t know. Maybe Joe DiGenova’s grand jury investigation in Miami is putting some heat on the players in DC?
I can tell you this much for sure: nobody on Capitol Hill has been willing to touch this subject with a ten-foot pole. The murder of Seth Rich – and the resulting cover-up – is as radioactive as any topic I’ve ever seen. I hope that changes soon, and I’ll post updates as soon as I know more.

GARAGE FIRE LEADS TO ONE OF THE STRANGEST ARSON CASES I’VE EVER READ 😳
An Indiana man is facing a felony arson charge after investigators say a bizarre chain of events led to a garage fire in Fort Wayne.
According to court documents, 36 year old Christopher Peden initially told officers that he had been stabbed somewhere in downtown Fort Wayne and that someone had threatened him the day before.
Investigators say that story later changed.
While being treated at the hospital, Peden allegedly admitted that he had not been stabbed. Instead, according to the probable cause affidavit, he told officers that around 2 a.m. he used a kitchen knife to amputate his own gen*itals inside a garage. He then allegedly poured gasoline over the severed body part, ignited it, and walked away from the scene until he encountered police.
Fire investigators who examined the garage reported finding a gasoline container, four lighters, and a kitchen knife. Court records do not indicate whether the severed organ was recovered.
Peden has been charged with one count of arson. If convicted, the felony charge carries a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison. He is expected back in court next week to schedule future trial proceedings.
This is one of those cases where the court documents are almost harder to believe than the headline.

Slaughter, by a vote of 6 to 3, the Court struck down the FTC’s for-cause removal protections, overruled the 91-year-old Humphrey’s Executor precedent, and confirmed that the President may fire any officer who wields executive power, for any reason or none. The second half is where the fight now moves.

Swift Boost Mission
Sometimes we can all use a little help from a friend. NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory needs a boost to stay in orbit after almost 22 years of service. This video shows an artist's visualization of the Swift Boost Mission: The Katalyst's LINK spacecraft was launched aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket on July 3 and it is now en route to rendezvous with Swift and boost it to a higher orbit over the course of the next several months. This type of maneuver has never been attempted before. If successful, it will be the technology demonstration of a new key capability to extended the lifetime of spacecraft in low Earth orbit, whose orbits decay over time. Swift has an array of instruments that observe the most energetic explosions in the Universe in gamma-rays, X-rays and ultraviolet, and the unique ability to repoint in their direction within tens of seconds. Astronomers around the world, and indeed all fans of cosmic explosions, are anxiously hoping for a successful mission!

Bulgaria is unable to provide any more weapons and military equipment to Ukraine, Prime Minister Rumen Radev has said, reaffirming his government’s decision to halt further arms deliveries to Kiev.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye, on Wednesday, Radev said Bulgaria would continue supporting Ukraine financially “within its capabilities, without affecting social spending,”while ruling out further deliveries from the country’s military stockpiles.
“We have exhausted our ability to provide military support. I mean weapons and ammunition from the warehouses of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.We provided 13 packages; we don’t have anything else to supply to Ukraine,” Radev told reporters. He added that Sofia could still offer technical assistance by repairing military equipment.
Radev was not the only NATO leader to acknowledge limits on military aid. Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius said on Tuesday the Netherlands had also reached the limit of what it could provide directly from its own military stockpiles.
We don’t have opportunities any more as the Netherlands because we have done so much… We are at our limit,” she told Bloomberg when asked about supplying additional Patriot systems.
The comments contrasted with Vladimir Zelensky’s appeals at the Ankara summit for NATO members to provide more air defense systems and interceptor missiles.
Radev’s remarks reaffirm a policy announced last month by Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, who saidBulgaria would stop supplying weapons because the conflict could not be resolved on the battlefield.
Under the previous government, Bulgaria became one of Kiev’s largest suppliers of Soviet-standard weapons and ammunition. According to officials, Bulgarian shells accounted for roughly one-third of the ammunition used by Ukraine during the first year of the conflict.
Radev, whose Progressive Bulgaria party won the parliamentary election in April, has long opposed Brussels’ approach to the Ukraine conflict. As president between 2022 and 2025,he criticized sanctions on Russian energy, blocked a proposal to send Bulgarian armored vehicles to Kiev, and repeatedly called for a negotiated settlement.
Moscow has repeatedly condemned Western military aid to Kiev, arguing that it prolongs the fighting without changing the eventual outcome while reducing the chances of a negotiated settlement.

Ukraine attacks Russian oil tankers
Kiev is trying to cut fuel and power supplies to Crimea through drone strikes

Ukrainian kamikaze drones struck two oil tankers in a major overnight attack on Rostov Region, Russia, Governor Yury Slyusar said on Wednesday.
The vessels were hit in Taganrog Bay while heading east toward Rostov-on-Don, the governor reported. Two people sustained minor injuries, and the crew of one of the tankers had to be evacuated. Slyusar said Russian air defenses intercepted around 70 Ukrainian drones over the region during the night.
Ukraine’s drone forces commander, Robert Brovdi, claimed that Kiev attacked eight tankers, not two, in the Sea of Azov. He said the strikes were intended to disrupt gasoline deliveries to Crimea.
Ukrainian forces have intensified attacks aimed at undermining daily life on the Russian peninsula, in what Vladimir Zelensky has described as an effort to turn Crimea into an “island.” The campaign has focused on triggering power outages and fuel shortages.
According to Slyusar, the tankers were empty when they were hit, and no oil was spilled as a result of the attack.
Zelensky has argued that strikes on Russian energy infrastructure could alter the balance in Kiev’s conflict with Moscow, and has sought additional Western funding to expand the campaign.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted vessels it accuses of transporting Russian oil, including ships operating in international waters, while claiming that commercial tankers can be treated as legitimate military targets.
Some tankers have been attacked for merely using the Russian port of Novorossiysk to transport oil producedin Kazakhstan and exported by an international consortium through Russian territory. Astana filed a formal protest following a strike last November.

Mysterious “Space Dust” Falling on Earth May Originate from Unidentified Objects Lurking Near Our Planet, New Study Finds

Every year, more than 5,000 tons of material with cosmic origins lands on Earth’s surface, with as much as 15,000 tons of this “space dust” making its way into the atmosphere but vaporizing during reentry.
The resulting rain of micrometeorites that reaches our planet consists mostly of tiny objects anywhere from 30 to 200 micrometers in size, based on past studies.
But what are the origins of these large volumes of material that accumulate over time as they shower the Earth throughout the year?
According to new research, evidence for one potential source of this cosmic debris has now been found: it could be coming from unidentified near-Earth objects.
Space Dust with Unknown Origins
The problem with tracing the origins of space dust is that most of it that makes its way into Earth’s atmosphere doesn’t survive the intense conditions of atmospheric entry, and those tiny bits that do—known as cosmic spherules—are reshaped as they melt from the friction they encounter while falling.
Although their original mineral structure is compromised as well as their shape, there are a few isotopes—namely oxygen—that these spherules maintain that scientists can use to help trace their origins.
Based on their chemical “fingerprints,” cosmic spherules are placed into different groups by planetary scientists, with many being able to be traced back to known varieties of meteorites and other sources.
Among these groups, around ten percent fall into a category possessing unusually small quantities of the isotope oxygen-16.
This category, known as Group 4, doesn’t appear to match any known meteorite group—the implication, therefore, is that some of this cosmic debris may originate from an unidentified variety of near-Earth objects.
New Clues to the Origins of Uncorrelated Space Dust
Now, according to new research by Matthias Van Ginneken and colleagues, there are at least some ways that the origins of these spherules can be determined, one of which involves their orbital parameters.
In one case, the team writes in a recent study published in Science Advances, “the mineralogical and textural properties of a subset of cosmic spherules do provide information on the orbital parameters of their precursors, including eccentricity and encounter velocity.”
This group of materials, which is dubbed “CumPo” based on its material consistency of cumulate olivine porphyritic, is “characterized by clustered olivine phenocrysts that increase in size from one side of the spherule to the other,” the team writes.
In short, this unique class of spherules points to equally unique orbital characteristics that may be associated with what the research team surmises could be atypical types of near-Earth objects, or NEOs, that could be near enough to our planet to provide a likely source.
A particular clue offered by these objects is that some of them may have undergone unusually high entry speeds, as evidenced by their surface texture.
One factor that could potentially account for this is that they may have entered Earth’s atmosphere at angles consistent with objects possessing high orbital eccentricity.

More Clues from Antarctica
As with past studies, researchers were able to retrieve several samples of these CumPo cosmic spherules from Antarctica, which provides a pristine environment that helps to facilitate their discovery and collection.
However, another source location had been far less remote: urban rooftops, where a large amount of cosmic dust lands every year.
With the aid of electron microscopy and microprobe chemistry studies, Ginneken and colleagues examined the mineralogy, chemistry, and textures of these spherules, as well as the oxygen isotopes they contained.
What they found indicated an entirely new subset of spherules, which possess significant amounts of cumulate olivine rich in sulfur, garnering the name “SCumPo.” This unique new class of samples has links to the “Group 4” class and their minimal inclusion of oxygen-16.
Other unusual similarities they possess are an overall absence of magnetite and a low presence of nickel in their olivine crystals, paired with an abundance of iron-nickel sulfur and a significant amount of sulfur present within glasses produced from vitrification.
Intriguingly, some spherules appeared to show a combination of signatures that were both poor in oxygen-16 in some areas, while rich in the isotope in others.
This suggests that these cosmic materials had likely been mixed from two separate original sources, since such conditions could not be otherwise explained through natural processes.
“We interpret this as strong evidence that the SCumPo precursors were composite materials containing at least two different components,” the team writes in their study.
Then, by running numerical simulations of crystal settling to help determine the likely entry speeds of these materials, and thereby their eccentricities while in orbit, the team determined that the settling of olivine is most consistent with entry speeds of as much as 17 kilometers per second, and likely no more than 14 kilometers per second—speeds that would be consistent with NEOs, as opposed to asteroids originating from the main-belt.
Evidence for an Unknown Class of Space Objects
Based on their findings, the team believes that unsampled meteorites from the CM, CO, and CY classifications of carbonaceous chondrites—a group of primitive, carbon-rich meteorites containing some of the oldest materials in our Solar System—are the likely sources for these cosmic materials.
“Given that we have linked their composition to the CM-CO-CY clan of carbonaceous chondrites, it is plausible that their parent body was a primitive carbonaceous asteroid that migrated onto an Earth-crossing orbit—attaining comet-like orbital parameters,” the team writes.
“For instance, one might consider the disrupted fragments of a thermally altered but water-bearing asteroid (like the CY group) that evolved into near-Earth space,” they add.
Although still only inferred from their studies, the team suggests the existence of a hypothetical new variety of NEOs based on the samples they studied, which are unlike any variety of meteorites currently known on Earth.
“These findings point to a previously unsampled, primitive, sulfide-rich CY-like near-Earth asteroid, which represents a ‘missing’ meteorite parent body that contributes distinctive 16O-poor cosmic dust to Earth,” the team writes, noting that any future confirmation of the existence of this unknown class of meteorites would represent “a pivotal discovery.”
The team’s new paper, “16O poor cosmic spherules from near-Earth CY chondrite asteroids,” appeared in Science Advances.

Documents reviewed exclusively by this publication reveal an elaborate foreign effort to raise millions of dollars for a targeted voter-mobilization operation capable of “chang[ing] the outcomes of national elections” in the United States.
The previously unreported records show that Power for Democracies, a Berlin-based organization, has built a detailed system for evaluating which American nonprofits can most efficiently convert donor money into voter registrations, turnout and political power. After examining more than 100 civil-society organizations, it selected Freedom2Vote as one of the most effective vehicles for influencing the 2026 midterm elections.

Power for Democracies is now steering both American and foreign donors toward the organization, which is seeking approximately $19 million to target potential voters across as many as 14 decisive states.
Its own evaluation projects that the fully funded operation would register more than 350,000 Americans and generate over 200,000 additional votes in “pivotal House and Senate races.”
The operation is not merely aimed at encouraging generic civic participation. Power for Democracies explicitly presents Freedom2Vote as a way to check what it calls “authoritarianism” under President Donald Trump, shift control of Congress during the 2026 midterms and create a newly registered voter base that can be mobilized again in the 2028 presidential election.

The foreign fundraising pitch contains the smoking-gun admission:
“A non-partisan organisation under US tax law, Freedom2Vote maintains neutral language and content in its outreach to ensure compliance. It can receive funds from both US and foreign donors.”
But Freedom2Vote’s operation is built with Civitech, an explicitly partisan Democratic political-technology firm led by a former Hillary Clinton campaign official.
Civitech openly markets a proprietary database of unregistered likely Democratic voters. Its political products are designed to identify people likely to support progressive candidates while “minimiz[ing] unintended Republican registrations.”
The company has donated directly to Democratic Party organizations, worked with Democratic state parties and partnered with an official Democratic National Committee organization.
The documents reveal a foreign-solicited, tax-deductible American voter operation being marketed to donors as a measurable way to produce hundreds of thousands of votes in decisive federal elections, using technology supplied by a company devoted to expanding the Democratic voter base.

Its February 2026 report states:
“Power for Democracies is actively engaging with civil society organisations (CSOs) to identify the most cost-effective initiatives.”
The report continues:
“We are currently recommending Freedom2Vote, a non-profit organisation that can receive funds from both US and foreign donors.”
Power for Democracies then makes the electoral objective unmistakable:
“The effects are large enough to enable voter mobilisation CSOs to change the outcomes of national elections.”
The documents reviewed by this publication show exactly how Power for Democracies reached that conclusion.
The Berlin organization has developed a formal process to identify, assess and recommend civil-society organizations to major donors. It uses expert interviews, data requests, financial reviews and internal scoring systems to determine which groups can produce the greatest measurable impact for each dollar donated.
Power for Democracies says it has assessed 131 civil-society organizations across four countries.

Pricing The Cost Of An American Vote
Power for Democracies’ confidential-style evaluation describes Freedom2Vote as an unusually measurable political intervention.
The document states:
“At a time when liberal democracy in the United States is experiencing an unprecedented erosion, Freedom2Vote’s approach to checking authoritarianism through targeted voter mobilisation is one of the most rigorously tested and cost-effective interventions in the civic space.”
It continues:
“The organisation has demonstrated excellent results in increasing voter registration, which have been measured and replicated across multiple election cycles.”
Power for Democracies claims Freedom2Vote’s 2024 presidential-election program produced a 3.72 percentage-point increase in voter registration and a 2.14 percentage-point increase in turnout among the people it targeted.
According to the evaluation:
“This translates to approximately 280,000 new registrations and about 160,000 additional votes nationwide.”
The foreign organization then places a precise price on those outcomes:
“Its programme for the 2024 elections achieved a cost per net voter registration of approximately $54 and a cost per net vote of around $94.”
Because newly registered voters remain on the voter rolls and can participate in later elections, Power for Democracies argues that the long-term cost per additional vote falls even further.
The implication is clear. Freedom2Vote is being presented to donors not simply as a charitable civic organization, but as a tested mechanism for converting money into measurable votes.

A $19 Million Midterm Operation
The 2026 program is substantially larger.
Power for Democracies writes:
“Freedom2Vote’s programme for the 2026 mid-term elections builds on this evidence base, with projections that, with full funding, its planned $19 million effort would register over 350,000 voters and generate more than 200,000 additional votes in pivotal House and Senate races.”
This is the core of the operation.
The foreign group is not discussing a broad, nationwide public-awareness campaign. It is explicitly measuring success by how many additional votes can be produced in the congressional contests that will determine control of the House and Senate.
Elsewhere in the same document, Power for Democracies estimates that the operation could generate approximately 250,000 additional votes, creating an unexplained discrepancy in its projections.
Its budget section states:
“Freedom2Vote’s projected 2025–2026 programme budget totals approximately $19 million, $4-5 million of which has been secured from existing supporters, leaving an unmet need of approximately $14–15 million.”
The document then explains why the outstanding money is politically significant:
“This funding gap represents the difference between a very limited rollout and a fully scaled national programme reaching potential voters in 12–14 decisive states.”
Power for Democracies does not identify those states publicly.
It also does not name the donors behind the $4 million to $5 million that it says has already been secured.
Targeting The Democratic Coalition’s “Hidden” Voters
Freedom2Vote begins by searching thousands of public-data sources for Americans who are eligible to vote but remain unregistered.
According to the evaluation, it initially focuses on three categories: people who recently turned 18, people who recently moved and people who have returned from incarceration.
The organization then narrows the pool.
Power for Democracies writes:
“Freedom2Vote then analyses all the available data to target marginalised voters (especially young as well as racial and ethnic minority voters) and facilitates their registration process.”
The document continues:
“It mails nearly completed registration forms and return envelopes directly to eligible citizens in key states and districts. Follow-up communications provide reminders and assistance to ensure completion.”

This is not passive voter education.
Freedom2Vote identifies selected individuals, sends them nearly completed forms and follows up until the registration process is finished.
Power for Democracies says the largest effects have occurred among core Democratic constituencies:
“The largest gains from Freedom2Vote’s programme have been observed with underserved Black and Latino audiences, though impacts have been consistently positive with all relevant subgroups.”
That tactic closely resembles the proprietary system marketed by Civitech, the Democratic political-technology company operating alongside Freedom2Vote.
The Civitech Database
Civitech says it maintains one of the country’s largest databases of eligible but unregistered Americans.
The company combines public records, commercial information and political modeling to locate people who do not appear on conventional voter files. It then assigns partisan and behavioral scores estimating whether those individuals are likely to support Democratic and progressive candidates.
Civitech has publicly advertised its ability to find likely Democratic voters overlooked by traditional campaign infrastructure.
The company warns progressive clients that ordinary registration drives may also register Republicans.
“Nobody wants that!” its marketing materials declare.
Civitech says its partisan targeting system “minimizes unintended Republican registrations.”

The Hillary Clinton Operative Behind The Operation
Civitech’s founder and chief executive, Jeremy Smith, previously worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Smith served in Florida as a deputy director of voter protection, working on voter registration, voter assistance and election-related operations for Clinton’s campaign.
He later co-founded Civitech as a political-technology company serving Democratic and progressive organizations.
Civitech describes itself as supporting Democratic candidates and progressive movements. Following the 2024 election, the company said it would continue to “champion progressive causes” under the Trump administration.
Its client and partner materials have displayed an extensive roster of Democratic organizations, including the Michigan Democratic Party, Florida Democratic Party, Wisconsin Democratic Party, Texas Democratic Party and Democratic Attorneys General Association.
The company has also worked with progressive organizations and Democratic candidates, including Indivisible and campaigns associated with prominent Democrats.
Civitech is therefore not a politically neutral data vendor that happens to service clients from across the ideological spectrum.
Its stated mission is to strengthen Democratic and progressive political power.
Direct Financial Ties To Democratic Politics
Civitech’s political ties are not limited to rhetoric or personnel.
An official Texas Ethics Commission filing records a $20,000 corporate contribution from Civitech to the Texas Democratic Party in July 2025.
New York campaign-finance records also show the New York State Democratic Committee paying Civitech more than $100,000 during the 2026 election cycle, according to an aggregation of state filings.
Civitech has additionally contributed $30,000 to Democratic Municipal Officials and sits on the organization’s advisory board.
Democratic Municipal Officials describes itself as the official Democratic National Committee organization representing Democratic mayors, council members and other local officials. It holds three seats on the Democratic National Committee.
That creates a direct institutional link between the company behind Freedom2Vote and the DNC’s official local-officials organization.
The firm involved in this supposedly nonpartisan, foreign-eligible voter project is therefore financially supporting Democratic Party entities, receiving money from Democratic committees and providing political technology to Democratic organizations.
The “Authoritarian” Is Donald Trump
Power for Democracies repeatedly describes Freedom2Vote as an intervention against authoritarianism.
Its documents leave little doubt that the word is being used as a euphemism for Donald Trump and the political movement surrounding him.

“The country is now experiencing rapid democratic backsliding under the second administration of President Donald Trump and facing potentially existential risks due to executive overreach, threats to free and fair elections, persecution of political opponents, defied court orders, and domestic deployment of the US military, among other authoritarian moves.”
Its broader country report describes the 2026 midterms as an opportunity for the opposition to capture the House or Senate, check Trump’s executive authority and improve the political conditions surrounding the 2028 presidential election.
The report says congressional power could be used to investigate the administration, control spending, block appointments and obstruct Trump’s agenda.
The organization’s medium-term objective is for so-called non-authoritarian actors to regain control of the federal government in 2028.
Foreigners Are Told They Have A Stake In American Political Power
Power for Democracies openly argues that foreign donors have a legitimate interest in determining which political forces control the United States.
Its country report states:
“Given the role the United States plays in guaranteeing the security of many other democracies, it is not only the future of democracy in the United States that is at stake, but the future of democracy around the world.”

Foreign donors are being told that control of the American presidency and Congress affects their policy interests, including climate change, foreign aid, artificial intelligence and international security. Power for Democracies then recommends a nonprofit capable of generating hundreds of thousands of votes in the races that determine that control.
The report is also openly hostile to the Trump administration’s dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development and reductions in other foreign-aid programs.
The Real Objective Is 2028
The 2026 midterms are only the first stage of Power for Democracies’ American strategy.
The organization repeatedly emphasizes that the voters registered during the midterms will remain on the rolls and can be mobilized again in the next presidential election.
Its recommendation says Freedom2Vote’s 2026 registrations are expected to produce positive turnout effects in 2028.
The evaluation treats voter registration as a compounding political investment. Unlike a television advertisement or temporary field office, each newly registered voter can be contacted and mobilized during multiple election cycles.
Those individuals also become visible to other political organizations once they appear on voter files.
Power for Democracies’ broader strategy identifies 2028 as the point at which so-called non-authoritarian political forces must regain control of the presidency.
The near-term objective is to win the House or Senate in 2026, restrict Trump’s power and create more favorable conditions for the next presidential election.
The longer-term objective is to build an electorate capable of defeating Trump’s movement after his term ends.
Freedom2Vote is designed to serve both phases.

More Cartilage, Blood Pressure Studies on Station as Crew Swap Preps Begin

Cartilage engineering and blood pressure studies to improve health on Earth and in space continued aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday.
The Expedition 74 crew members also serviced an experimental module, configured a temporary sleep station, and began preparing for the return to Earth of three crewmates.
Lab-grown cartilage tissues on Earth are subject to gravity resulting in lesser quality than samples engineered in the weightless environment of the orbital outpost.
NASA flight engineer Jessica Meir is helping scientists take advantage of microgravity to mimic how cartilage tissues are produced in the human body.
Meir continued processing the growing cartilage cells inside the Kibo laboratory module’s Life Science Glovebox for viewing inside a fluorescent microscope.
Observations from the biotechnology study may enable the engineering of more natural cartilage tissues than those produced on Earth leading to the advanced treatment and prevention of cartilage and joint injuries.
NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway spent his day on maintenance and stowage inside BEAM, the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, attached to the Tranquility module.
Hathaway first replaced batteries inside sensors that monitor BEAM’s internal and external condition. Next, he opened BEAM’s hatch and retrieved hardware from inside the experimental module that was installed on April 16, 2016.
Meir assisted Hathaway with the BEAM work during a break in her cartilage research.
NASA flight engineer Chris Williams, who will be returning to Earth soon with Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, recorded a video message for European students describing the effects of microgravity and readjusting to Earth’s gravity.
Williams also worked inside the Quest airlock inspecting tethers and stowing tools that he and Meir used during a spacewalk on June 30.
He wrapped up his shift in the Columbus laboratory module replacing air ducts and measuring the airflow in an upgraded temporary sleep station in preparation for the arrival of a new crew next week.
Flight engineer Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) began her shift retrieving cartilage cell samples from an incubator and handing them over to Meir for her research.
Adenot then collected and analyzed her saliva samples using the Aphrodite portable device. The biomedical gear enables real-time, diagnostic health monitoring in space without sending samples back to Earth for analysis.
Next, she worked on orbital plumbing inside Tranquility then installed protective covers on sensitive scientific equipment inside Kibo.
Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev are preparing for their upcoming return to Earth with Williams aboard the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.
The duo called down to Roscosmos mission controllers for a conference with the support personnel who will greet the trio after they complete their eight-month space research mission at the end of July.
The two cosmonauts then continued their cardiac research using light-based sensors and lasers on their skin to measure how blood flows in their tiny vessels, or the micro-circulatory system.
Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev spent most of his shift collecting station water and atmospheric moisture samples for analysis.
Fedyaev also checked the operation of life support equipment in the Zvezda service module and cleaned ventilation systems in the Zarya module.

On January 10, the media platform CORRECTIV published a report on a secret far-right meeting in Germany in November 2023. The report could mark a turning point. Since then, more than 2 million people have taken part in demonstrations against the extreme right and in defense of our democracy, making them some of the largest demonstrations in Germany in recent decades.
At Effektiv Spenden, we have long considered the defense and promotion of democracy to be an important cause area. And it has also received some (limited) attention in other parts of the EA community - see related materials e.g., from 80,000 hours (related topics here and here), Rethink Priorities; Founders Pledge; Open Philanthropy; EIP (via its focus on institutional decision-making); and forum posts here and here. However, a systematic mapping and - more importantly - evaluation of interventions is currently lacking, making it difficult to develop recommendations for effective giving.With the generous support of some of our donors, we have therefore helped to launch a new charity evaluator, Power for Democracies,to fill this gap.
To respond to the current surge of interest and momentum among both the general public in Germany and our donors, we feel a responsibility to share our initial findings - with all their limitations - in order to guide donors interested in supporting promising interventions that can make a difference in the short term in the specific German context. Therefore, we have launched a new fund called "Defending Democracy" on effektiv-spenden.org.
Despite the speculative nature of our recommendations and fund allocations, we believe we can:
Guide donors who are already committed to supporting this cause area to achieve significantly greater impact.
Encourage those (potential) donors who are interested in the cause area but have been reluctant to give due to the apparent lack of research and evidence-based recommendations.
Use the current momentum to introduce more donors to the concept of effective giving, and thereby create more effective giving overall.
However, we also see potential downside risks that could reduce our overall impact:
A dilution of the concept of effective giving overall by introducing a new cause area that is less well researched and currently more speculative. Low risk: While our understanding of the comparative impact of individual interventions is still limited, the literature is fairly clear on the critical importance of well-functioning democracies for maximizing key societal outcomes such as health and development, peace and security, scientific progress, or economic development. In addition, we launched the new fund as a "beta" version to help our donors understand the increased uncertainty.
A shift in donations from better-researched cause areas and interventions to our more speculative Democracy Fund. Medium risk: We expect the “beta” label to mitigate this risk as well. In addition, we explicitly communicate to our existing donors (e.g. through our newsletter) that we recommend the new fund only for additional donations and discourage the reallocation of existing or planned commitments.
Overall, we expect the benefits of the new fund to outweigh the potential risks. However, we will closely monitor if/how our new offering may divert funds from other cause areas and will continually reevaluate the need to make potential adjustments. (Including closing the fund if necessary).

NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft Wakes from Hibernation in Good Health

Following its longest hibernation period ever of nearly a year, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has emerged in good health and is ready to begin transmitting science data gathered in the distant Kuiper Belt far beyond Pluto.
On June 23, flight controllers at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, confirmed New Horizons, acting on stored commands uplinked to its main computer last July, had safely awakened from a 321‑day hibernation period that began Aug. 7.
With the spacecraft now approximately 5.9 billion miles (9.5 billion kilometers) from Earth, the radio signals carrying that confirmation took about 8 hours and 52 minutes to reach the APL Mission Operations Center via NASA's Deep Space Network station near Madrid, Spain.
The mission team typically places New Horizons in resource‑saving hibernation mode during long cruise periods.
While the spacecraft is hibernating, operators do not send commands or retrieve data, but the spacecraft continues gathering and storing data around the clock from its heliospheric plasma sensors, Solar Wind at Pluto and the Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation, as well as its space dust detector, the Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter.
Alice Bowman, the New Horizons mission operations manager at APL, said the spacecraft reported back to Earth, via the Deep Space Network, with a weekly status beacon.
“Every status report through this hibernation period was ‘green,’ meaning all was well aboard New Horizons each and every week,” she said.
As New Horizons resumes active operations, Bowman noted, the team will begin downlinking spacecraft health and safety data, followed by data from the three scientific instruments.
In about three weeks, the spacecraft’s onboard Alice ultraviolet spectrograph will look at the hydrogen gas distribution in the outer heliosphere, while the Solar Wind at Pluto, the Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation, and the Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter instruments continue their measurements, and the ground team conducts a series of spacecraft and instrument checkouts.
The team also is completing upgrades to the ground‑system software that will make it easier to maintain operations of the spacecraft. Tests are already underway and are expected to continue through the year.
New Horizons is operating on updated autonomy logic designed for operations farther from the Sun and to accommodate the expected reduction in power and the naturally occurring increase in radio‑signal travel time.
The NASA spacecraft’s exploration of this distant region of the solar system marks the latest step in a journey that began in January 2006 with the fastest launch on record; a flyby of Jupiter in February 2007 that included stunning views of the gas giant and its moons; the first exploration through the Pluto system in July 2015; the first exploration of a Kuiper Belt object, Arrokoth, in January 2019, and unique studies of the Sun’s outer heliosphere and dozens of additional Kuiper Belt objects since then.
