According to reports, surveillance video showed Williams approaching the ATM late at night and trying to force it open. During the attempt, the metal bar reportedly contacted internal electrical components, causing a fatal electric shock.
His family later filed a $500,000 lawsuit against the bank, claiming it was responsible for his death.

A black feminist historian whose work is being labeled as misleading — and who may have lost her cushy academic job — says it all comes down to an attack on black women.
The New York Times tells the tale of Kerri Greenidge, whose 2022 book “The Grimkes” was hailed for its narrative about a slaveholding family and its work in the abolitionist movement.
Publishers Weekly put the book on its list of that year’s top books, while the American Historical Association handed Greenidge the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize, which honors scholars in women’s history and feminist theory.
But the glow has dimmed as the furor over her flimsy factual foundation is being linked to the end of her gig as a tenured associate professor in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora at Tufts University — and the loss of a book deal.

Myra Glenn, a retired professor of American history at Elmira College, was among the first to question what she was reading in 2024 when she was reviewing the book for a journal.
“I said, ‘Where is she getting this?’” she said. “Boy, it became a major problem.”
She did not pull punches in the review, writing, “All too often Greenidge lacks the evidence to substantiate many of her major claims. Her work is also riddled with factual errors and repeatedly omits needed endnotes.”
Glenn noted that while Greenidge said key letters she cited were held by the University of Michigan, they were not.
Greenidge even said racist critics are out to get her.
“I am heartbroken that a field I have given my life to can treat me this way,” Greenidge said. “The attack on Black women academics is real.”
“I have never plagiarized anything in my life,” she continued. “I have never fabricated anything.”
But she added, “Are there citations that were misattributed? Probably.”
Patrick Collins, a representative of Tufts University, would not discuss when Greenidge and Tufts parted ways, but said that as early as December 2022, the college was aware of criticism that the book “contained multiple errors of fact and failed to give appropriate credit to the work of another.”
“The university initiated a thorough peer review involving a panel of external scholars of American history which identified multiple errors of fact and citation,” Collins said.
“In keeping with its commitment to ethical conduct in research, the university proactively moved to correct the public record by informing publisher W.W. Norton of the peer review findings.”
The book no longer appears to be sold on Norton’s website.
Greenidge said the college probe of her work was initiated by a white woman against whom Greenidge sought a restraining order.

“The independent review by outside experts in the field was fair, fact-based, thorough, and objective,” Collins meanwhile said. “We stand by the review and strongly deny any allegations of bias.”
Greenidge’s 2019 book “Black Radical,” which is about civil rights activist William Monroe Trotter, won the Mark Lynton History Prize from the Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.
Stephen Fox, who wrote a 1970 biography about Trotter, said he had issues with Greenidge’s book.
“It seems well done, except when you look at the footnotes,” Fox said, noting that he could not find the material cited using the sources Greenidge listed.
“I started to think maybe it wasn’t just sloppy,” he said. “I think it’s something deeper.”

Actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park (1993), Mark in Possession (1981), and Alisdair Stewart in The Piano (1993), has died. He was 78 years old.
An announcement from his family on his official Instagram page stated, “It is with immense sadness that the whānau [extended family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia.”
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the statement continued.
In March 2023, the New Zealand actor publicly revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, having been diagnosed the previous year. Although his cancer was later in remission, Neill was subject to monthly chemotherapy sessions, until an experimental immunotherapy treatment, named CAR T-cell therapy, left him cancer-free.
“I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy, [which is] pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,” Neill told 7News in April 2026 (via The Guardian).
“I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” Neill said. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”
In the statement announcing his death two months on, Neill’s family made it clear that cancer was not a cause of his passing. Rather, his death was sudden and not affiliated with his previous, publicly known health issues.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” the statement continued. “They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”
Regarding his exact cause of death, the family requested privacy at this time, and stated they would later reveal further information in the future.
“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

Country music star Kacey Musgraves has once again weighed in with her far-left political views, this time by lashing out at Texas for approving new education guidelines that include Bible-based lessons in elementary schools.
Musgraves shared a Dallas Morning News article on her Instagram account and added the caption, “The bible being forced by people who don’t even follow it themselves. smfh. This is simply indoctrination and it’s not okay.”
The singer has long positioned herself as one of country music’s most vocal liberals, using her platform to champion left-wing causes and attack Republican figures.
Her latest attack on Texas comes after the state approved curriculum materialsthat include brief references to biblical concepts in early elementary lessons. The content is limited and educational in nature.
In kindergarten materials, teachers discuss the Golden Rule as a way of helping one’s neighbor and explain that the Bible is “a collection of ancient texts” whose parts form “the core books of the Jewish and Christian religions.”
A third-grade lesson on the first Thanksgiving mentions how the governor of Plymouth referenced “several passages from the Christian Bible in the book of Psalms” and notes that the Psalms are songs, poems, and hymns “that are used in both Jewish and Christian worship.”
These are contextual references to history and shared cultural heritage, not theological indoctrination or mandatory religious instruction.
In 2019, following mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, she took direct aim at then-President Donald Trump during a Lollapalooza performance and on social media. She tweeted, “Don’t you hear us, @realDonaldTrump? Don’t you hear our pain? You have the power to become a hero. Why don’t you take it?” and followed up by saying it was “indescribably mind-numbing” to see Trump “blatantly and murderously ignore doing ONE THING that would not only make people happy but would SAVE PEOPLE’S LIVES,” while pushing for gun control measures.

She has carefully crafted a public persona as a self-described liberal misfit in the traditionally conservative country music world.

During the 1950s, the Catholic Church in Belgium separated thousands of newborns from their unwed mothers and put them up for adoption, often without the mothers' consent. The women were shamed into surrendering their babies by their families and a powerful church. In 2024, Pope Francis apologized for those forced adoptions. But Belgians weren't the only victims. From 1950 to 1970, the Vatican sent 3,500 Italian children to America on something called an orphan visa. The trouble was most were not orphans. Like their Belgian counterparts, they too were the children of unwed mothers. Many mothers later went searching for their children, only to discover they had been sent across an ocean. As we first reported in 2024, thousands of American adoptees are still struggling to piece together their lost lives.
It was a day he'll never forget. American adoptee John Campitelli was 28 years old when he was reunited with his Italian birth mother. He'd been searching for her for more than a decade—a mother he'd been told had abandoned him.
John Campitelli: My mom said you know, 28 years have gone by. I've never been able to bake a cake for you for your birthday. She says "I don't care what month it is, I'm gonna bake you a cake. We need to celebrate cause our prodigal son has finally come home.
John Campitelli was born Piero Davi in 1963 in Italy. His mother, Francesca, was unmarried and forced by her family to give him up. He was sent to a Catholic-run institution for the children of unwed mothers. Shunned and disgraced, Francesca handed her baby to the nuns. Immediately, her name was stripped from the birth records. With the stroke of a pen, Piero Davi became an orphan. Campitelli showed us the church documents that changed his life.
John Campitelli: It says here, "they abandoned since birth and their whereabouts are unknown." They knew damn well where my mom was. I mean she showed her documents when she handed me over. So, this is an outright lie.
A lie John Campitelli has spent his life unraveling. As soon as he was declared an orphan, he was eligible for adoption and a U.S. visa. He says his mother told him she had no idea. She had every intention of coming back for him.
John Campitelli: She said, "I never signed a paper anywhere saying that I was willing to give you up."
Bill Whitaker: She thought placing you in –in the institution was—was temporary?
John Campitelli:She thought that it would be her right to be able to get me back someday when she got her life together.
Bill Whitaker: She never signed you away?
John Campitelli: No. She said "I placed you, because I couldn't keep you at that point in time because of the family situation. But I never consented to the adoption or to the fact that you would leave Italy and you would be far from me for the rest of my life.
Piero Davi was one of thousands of children born out of wedlock that the Vatican repackaged as orphans. The church arranged the visas, helped by a 1950 U.S. law that broadened the definition of orphan to include a child with one parent, but one who couldn't provide care. With that leeway, the orphan program boomed. For Piero's mother—and thousands like her—it was devastating to learn the child she'd entrusted to the church had disappeared.
Bill Whitaker: It seems that many of these mothers had no idea that their children were being sent to the United States. Could they do anything about it?
Maria Laurino: No, absolutely not. You can't send a baby to the United States and then tell the adoptive parents that the, the birth mother wants the child.
Author Maria Laurino uncovered the Vatican's orphan program in her book, "The Price of Children." She pieced the story together from hundreds of documents in the Church's own archives in New York. Laurino told us the program hinged on a consent form the mothers were supposed to sign severing all rights to the child. But Laurino told us, doctors or lawyers sometimes signed the consent without telling the mother. Others were deliberately misled.
Maria Laurino: There were women who were trapped into this situation um and tremendous pressure to relinquish their children. There were women who were, were tricked, who signed forms they didn't understand. And, in the worst cases, there were women who were told their child had died.

Auroras from Space
What do auroras look like from above? Behold! From the ground, auroras dance high above clouds, frequently causing spectacular displays. From space, they look a bit different. As the International Space Station (ISS) circles the Earth every 90 minutes, it sometimes sees auroras below that are active on the night side. A one-hour time-lapse video showing auroras from above was captured about two weeks ago from the orbiting ISS. The ISS and all objects in low Earth orbit will pass well above green auroras but just a bit above red glowing auroras. The auroras' electron and proton streams are too thin to be a danger to the ISS, just as clouds pose little danger to airplanes. From orbit, as magnetic fields change, auroras can appear to squiggle and crawl like giant snakes. The featured one-minute video was captured by French astronaut Sophie Adenot of the ISS Expedition 74 crew.

==Slovakia was not the only NATO state that refused to participate in the bloc’s latest military aid package for Ukraine••, the country’s president, Peter Pellegrini, has said.
During the summit in Ankara, Türkiye last week, NATO members pledged to provide Kiev with €70 billion ($80 billion) in military equipment, training, and other assistance this year andto sustain at least the same level of financial support in 2027.
In an interview with broadcaster TA3 on Sunday,Pellegrini rejected claims that Bratislava was alone in declining to contribute to the packageduring the gathering in the Turkish capital.
“That is simply not the case. The Hungarian Prime Minister [Peter Magyar] spoke clearly on this matter, stating that Hungary would not provide any military or financial aid to Ukraine. The Czech Prime Minister [Andrej Babis] expressed the exact same position right at the negotiating table and there were other prime ministers, who also will not participate in those 70 billion,” he said.
“Slovakia was not alone in this attitude. Our position is that we will not help with weapons or financially participate in the further arming of Ukraine,” the president stressed.
Overall, Pellegrini described the NATO summit as “constructive,” but expressed regret that it focused on boosting military aid to Kiev and strengthening its air defenses and the ability to hit targets deep inside Russia,while “very little, if any, time has been devoted to when and how to start diplomatic negotiations.”
“There is no purely military solution to this conflict.If this continues, it will be a war of attrition for several years, in which thousands of innocent people and tens of thousands of soldiers will be dying every month,” Pellegrini said.
After Robert Fico returned as Slovak prime minister in October 2023,Bratislava halted military supplies to Kiev. It also consistently criticized EU sanctions against Russia and called for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova last week described the NATO summit as “humiliating” for Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky.
“He once again rolled out his usual wish list, begging for missile and air defense systems… while touting Ukrainian military’s terrorist capabilities.NATO members offered no meaningful response to these appeals,” Zakharova argued.
Moscow has repeatedly warned against Western military and financial support for Ukraine, arguing that it only serves to prolong the conflict without altering its outcome, while also increasing the risk of a direct clash between Russia and NATO.

Skywatchers are in for an exciting week as celestial events unfold, marked by the transition from a new moon to a delightful crescent and the commencement of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) supporters appear to be the most enthusiastic voting bloc ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, according to a new poll.
The HarrisX survey found that Trump/MAGA Republicans were the most likely to say they were "definitely going to vote" in the 2026 congressional midterm elections on November 3: 75 percent of MAGA respondents expressed that enthusiasm while 70 percent of Republicans gave the same response and 63 percent of Democrats.
Voter enthusiasm ahead of an election is often viewed as an early indicator of turnout strength and campaign engagement, although self-reported voting intention does not necessarily translate into actual turnout.
The U.S. midterms will decide whether President Donald Trump's GOP retains control of one or both chambers in Congress, or if the Democratic Party will be able to win back lost voters after the 2024 presidential election. The midterms are not just about who governs the country, but how effectively they can do so; unified control can make it easier for a party to bring in sweeping policy changes, and a more divided government can halt that process.
MAGA Republicans Express Highest Voter Enthusiasm In Poll
The Harris Poll, which was conducted between July 9 and 10, and surveyed 1,019 registered voters, found that 85 percent of Trump/MAGA Republicans reported that they were likely to vote in the 2026 midterms (combining the categories of "definitely going to vote" and "probably going to vote.") The poll had an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
Meanwhile, 78 percent of Democrats gave the same response, as did 78 percent of traditional Republicans and 63 percent of Independents.
Democrats and Independents also had higher percentages of voters claiming they were "definitely not going to participate." Seven percent of Democrats and Independents indicated that they did not plan to cast ballots in the midterms, while only 1 percent of MAGA supporters and 4 percent of traditional Republicans said the same.
Those who reported they were generally unlikely to vote (combining the "definitely not going to participate," and "probably not going to participate" categories) were most likely to be Independents (16 percent), followed by Democrats (13 percent), traditional Republicans (9 percent) and Trump/MAGA Republicans (4 percent).
Of the 1,019 registered voters HarrisX surveyed, 196 of respondents classified themselves as Trump/MAGA Republicans and 183 said they were traditional Republicans.

Poll Also Finds Voters More Likely To Vote For A Democrat
Despite finding elevated enthusiasm among MAGA/Trump Republicans, the same poll also found that—when asked if they had to vote today, if they would vote for a Democrat or Republican for Congress—more participants said they would elect a Democratic candidate (44 percent to 41 percent Republican, 3 percent would vote other and 11 percent didn't know).
In a further query where participants who had previously opted for "other" or "don't know" were forced to choose between voting for a Democratic or Republican candidate, the figure rose to 52 percent for Democrat and 48 percent Republican.
Overall, 52 percent of participants claimed they would lean toward a Democratic candidate, while 47 percent said they would lean toward a Republican candidate.
This was the case even though there were more participants that reported being Republican than Democrat—379 Republicans, 358 Democrats, 270 Independents and 12 others took part in the survey.
However,early voter sentiment may not translate onto the actual ballots cast in the midterms—the poll's findings simply indicate that while MAGA Republican enthusiasm is high, more Americans could be leaning toward choosing a Democratic candidate in the election at this point in time.

NASA’s Hubble Discovers First of Star Cluster’s Missing Black Holes

The massive globular star cluster Omega Centauri has puzzled astronomers for decades. It should be filled with black holes left behind by exploding stars, yet evidence for them is scarce.
Now, astronomers using archival data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and supportive observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have finally located their first stellar-mass black hole in this cluster.
Discovering the first of this missing black hole population will help refine current theories on black hole formation within environments such as Omega Centauri. The team’s findings published Monday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Omega Centauri is composed of 10 million gravitationally bound stars.
Though the astronomical community previously found evidence with Hubble that an intermediate-mass black hole lurks at its center, models suggest this star cluster should also contain about 10,000 smaller, stellar-mass black holes.
This notable population of black holes evaded detection in previous observational studies, which used the radial velocity method or looked for radio and X-ray emission from material falling onto black holes.
This new discovery features a different approach, known as astrometry, to measure very small movements of stars over time.
By sifting through more than 20 years of Hubble archival data and pulling in recent Webb data to further refine their astrometric measurements, the team located a star orbiting an invisible object so hefty that it has to be a black hole.
Dubbed oMEGACat BH-2, it is the first stellar-mass black hole detected in Omega Centauri, and it has some surprising qualities. oMEGACat BH-2 has a lower-than-expected mass and, with its visible star companion, the black hole-star duo has the longest orbital period of any black hole binary system known to date.
“With Hubble and Webb data, we were able to see the motion of the visible main sequence star that is part of this binary, which is about 18,000 light-years away in the dense environment of Omega Centauri,” said Matthew Whitaker of the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, lead author of the paper.
“The precision of these measurements is incredible, down to a fraction of a pixel on Hubble and Webb’s detectors. It would not have been possible to find this black hole without these two space telescopes.”

The team’s findings refine a past study by a different group of scientists that suggested this binary system included a neutron star.
By expanding Hubble data from the earlier investigation with archival Hubble astrometric measurements from 2002 to 2023, and pulling in Webb near-infrared data to improve precision, the University of Utah-led team was able to better constrain the mass of the visible star’s dark companion, ruling out the neutron star possibility.
“While we already knew that the star was 0.78 solar masses, we can now calculate the black hole’s mass, which is 4.46 solar masses and therefore too heavy to be a neutron star.
However, its mass is much lower than would be expected in a metal-poor environment like Omega Centauri. This is surprising and exciting,” said Anil Seth of the University of Utah, a coauthor of the study.
“We now know that a metal-poor star is able to form a black hole like this, and we need to figure out how that happens. This detection is providing some data to those who do that kind of modeling.”
Long time coming
Based on the precise data from Hubble and Webb, the team could chart the star’s path over 20-plus years, during its closest approach to its black hole companion when it moved the fastest across the sky.
From the extensive data, the team determined that the visible star orbits oMEGACat BH-2 once every 94 years, making it the longest-period black hole binary ever known.
Its long orbital period also gives a clue to the origin of this binary system. It was probably dynamically formed, meaning the star and its black hole companion did not start out together but rather found each other in this cluster.
The researchers calculated that a system like oMEGACat BH-2 will survive for less than a billion years before it is torn apart by encounters with nearby stars, a much shorter span than the age of the cluster (approximately 12 billion years old).
“It's important to understand black hole populations in globular clusters because there's uncertainty about their physics and formation,” said Seth.
“More specifically, understanding the process of forming black holes and then dynamically forming binaries is vital, because it affects our ability to interpret and understand gravitational wave events.
Environments like Omega Centauri are the primary places where we think binaries are merging and creating these waves.”
The team’s discovery of stellar-mass black hole oMEGACat BH-2 with the Hubble-Webb dataset is just the start of finding these evasive black hole populations in globular star clusters.
“With Hubble and Webb, we can continue to look at Omega Centauri and expand our search for similar systems within other clusters,” said Whitaker.
“We’re also very excited for the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope because it will image the crowded galactic bulge, including the galactic center, very regularly with Hubble-like resolution and with a much wider field of view.
We’re hoping we’ll be able to find black hole binary systems like this one because of the regular cadence of Roman’s observations.”

US President Donald Trump said Monday the United States would reinstate a blockade targeting Iranian ships and customers while keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to vessels from all other countries.
“We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving,” he said in a post on Truth Social.
“The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,” Trump wrote, saying the measure would prevent only Iranian ships or their customers from entering or leaving the waterway.
Trump declared thatthe United States would become the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait”and said Washington would charge a fee equal to 20% of all cargo shipped through the strategic passage to cover the costs of providing security.
“The process and formation will begin immediately,” he added.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Monday they would continue to enforce Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of “putting global oil and gas supplies at risk through its actions” in the strategic waterway.
“We will continue to exercise sovereignty and control over the Strait of Hormuz with strength and power,” Guards spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi said.
Mohebbi said US involvement in the strait had endangered the security of global energy supplies andthat Washington “must be held accountable.”

Iran said on Monday it would not allow the United States to take part in managing the Strait of Hormuz, following comments by President Donald Trumpthat Washington could take control of the strategic waterway.
“We will under no circumstances allow the United States to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz,” the spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said.
Iran's armed forces, the spokesperson said, would respond “with force” to any US military interference with commercial or oil tanker traffic outside routes designated by Iran and without authorization from its armed forces.
The spokesperson also said any regional country providing logistical support to the US military would be regarded as participating in a war against Iran's sovereignty and national security.
