Słowo bałagan jest zapożyczeniem z języka rosyjskiego (балаган), a w dalszej etymologii prawdopodobnie z kirgiskiego, a nawet perskiego (בַּאלַאחַאנֶה - bâlâxâne). W polszczyźnie pojawiło się niedawno, bo dopiero od około 100 lat, z pierwotnym znaczeniem budy jarmarcznej, które było bliższe pierwotnemu znaczeniu słowa, zgodnie z Narodowym Centrum Kultury.

A similar tragic event: In 2013, a family in the village of Linyovo was also killed by toxic fumes from rotting potatoes in their cellar, with only their 8-year-old daughter surviving for the same reason.
