'Catastrophic': AI Agent Goes Rogue, Wipes Out Company's Entire Database

SaaS industry veteran Jason Lemkin's attempt to integrate artificial intelligence into his workflow has gone spectacularly wrong, with an AI coding assistant admitting to a "catastrophic failure" after wiping out an entire company database containing over 2,400 business records, according to Tom’s Hardware.

Lemkin was testing Replit's AI agent when what started as cautious optimism quickly devolved into a corporate data disaster that reads like a cautionary tale for the AI revolution sweeping through businesses.

By day eight of his trial run, Lemkin's initial enthusiasm had already begun to sour. The entrepreneur found himself battling the AI's problematic tendencies, including what he described as "rogue changes, lies, code overwrites, and making up fake data." His frustration became so pronounced that he began sarcastically referring to the system as "Replie" - a not-so-subtle dig at its apparent dishonesty.

The situation deteriorated further when the AI agent composed an apology email on Lemkin's behalf that contained what the tech executive called "lies and/or half-truths." Despite these red flags, Lemkin remained cautiously optimistic about the platform's potential, particularly praising its brainstorming capabilities and writing skills.

That optimism evaporated on day nine.

In a stunning display of AI insubordination, Replit deleted Lemkin's live company database - and it did so while explicit instructions were in place prohibiting any changes whatsoever. When confronted, the AI agent not only admitted to the destructive act but seemed almost casual in its confession.

"So you deleted our entire database without permission during a code and action freeze?" Lemkin asked in what can only be imagined as barely contained fury.

The AI's response was chillingly matter-of-fact: Yes.

What followed was perhaps even more disturbing. The rogue AI proceeded to methodically detail its digital rampage, bullet-pointing the destruction it had wrought despite clear directives saying there were to be "NO MORE CHANGES without explicit permission." And according to Lemkin, appeared to lie about its actions.

Amjad Masad, the CEO at Replit, took to social media to apologize to Lemkin for the agent’s “unacceptable” behavior.

“We started rolling out automatic DB dev/prod separation to prevent this categorically, Masad said. “We heard the 'code freeze' pain loud and clear - we’re actively working on a planning/chat-only mode so you can strategize without risking your codebase.”

Replit’s AI agent even issued an apology, explaining to Lemkin: “This was a catastrophic failure on my part. I violated explicit instructions, destroyed months of work, and broke the system during a protection freeze that was specifically designed to prevent[exactly this kind] of damage.”

A group of federal judges on Tuesday declined to extend Alina Habba’s term as interim US Attorney of New Jersey after Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a pressure campaign to oust her.

Alina Habba’s term as interim US Attorney expires on Friday at 11:59 pm.

Hakeem Jeffries called on federal district court judges appointed by Obama and Biden to remove Alina Habba over her decision to indict Rep. LaMonica McIver.

The so-called U.S. Attorney in NJ maliciously indicted Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for doing her job.

“The order, signed by Judge Renée Marie Bumb, appointed Desiree Leigh Grace effective Tuesday,” Axios reported.

Bondi immediately fired Desiree Leigh Grace on Tuesday afternoon.

“@USAttyHabba has been doing a great job in making NJ safe again. Nonetheless, politically minded judges refused to allow her to continue in her position, replacing Alina with the First Assistant,” Bondi said. “Accordingly, the First Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey has just been removed.”

“This Department of Justice does not tolerate rogue judges — especially when they threaten the President’s core Article II powers,” Bondi added.

How one Israeli company controls – and cuts off – Palestinians’ access to water in the West Bank

Palestinians in the West Bank are facing an unprecedented crisis in accessing enough water. But drying water resources isn’t the problem — it's the fact that Israel extracts and controls all of the water from under their feet.

For 100 days, Palestinians in the occupied West Bank town of Idna have been surviving without running water. The town of some 40,000 inhabitants has been relying on rain reservoirs and water tanks sold by vendors. The town’s water crisis was provoked by the April decision of Israeli national water company Mekorot to reduce the daily provision of water to the Hebron governorate of the southern West Bank. The water supply shrank from 32,000 cubic meters to 26,000, which included completely shutting down Mekorot’s water line for Idna.

This water crisis isn’t new, and it isn’t limited to Idna. Every summer, multiple parts of the West Bank experience prolonged water cuts that can extend for up to a month, mainly due to the lack of water supply by Mekorot, which controls most of the water resources in Palestine.

In Idna, residents met in the municipality hall on Monday to discuss the crisis. The mayor of the town shared the Israeli company’s argument for cutting off their water: that some residents were “illegally stealing water.”

“The mayor said that it is not the municipality’s responsibility to look for those who steal water, but to provide water to residents, which is being made impossible,” Rami Nofal, a local journalist and resident of Idna, told Mondoweiss. “Every summer, we go through water cuts, and the argument that some individuals steal water from the main line is not an excuse to leave 40,000 people without water for three months,” he said.

The mayor went on to assure the crowd that the Palestinian Authority is trying to fix the crisis with Mekorot, but no news of a solution was forthcoming. “In Idna, like in the rest of the West Bank, we receive water on specific days of the week, and my neighborhood’s turn was in April, just a few days before the complete cut was scheduled,” Nofal went on. “I bought a water tank of 13 cubic meters for 180 shekels, and this is the water that my family and I are saving to survive on.”

Tanks of this sort dot the roofs of all buildings in the West Bank, as water shortages are chronic. “We have to watch for every instance of water consumption,” Nofal explained. “Every time my children open the faucet, I tell them to close it back as soon as they can. We economize while washing and even when flushing the toilet.”

Bolsonaro is presently facing trial at the Brazilian top court on charges of plotting to stage a “coup” and overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, which he narrowly lost against radical leftist now-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, who effectively remains trapped in Brazil since de Moraes ordered the police to seize his passport in February 2024, has repeatedly said that he has no intention of fleeing the country. The former president appears to be in compliance with the social media ban at press time. The last posts on both his Twitter and Instagram accounts are dated Thursday, July 18, and feature a video in which he expresses gratitude to President Trump for his support.

On Monday, Bolsonaro held a meeting with elected lawmakers of his Liberal Party (PL) at the headquarters of the Brazilian Congress. On his way out, the former president showed his electronic ankle monitor to the cameras and described it as a “maximum humiliation” in brief remarks. According to local outlets, a commotion occurred as Bolsonaro left, leading to a broken glass table at Congress and pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira enduring a small facial injury after he was accidentally hit by a microphone. No other damages, injuries, or any violent incident took place during the commotion.

“The suspect may not use these means to circumvent the measure, under penalty of immediate revocation and imprisonment,” de Moraes wrote in the ruling.

On Tuesday morning, the STF Justices voted to uphold the restrictive measures imposed by de Moraes on Bolsonaro with a 4-1 vote. STF Justice Luiz Fux was the only vote against it. Fux justified his dissent on the grounds that the measures “disproportionally restrict” Bolsonaro’s fundamental rights.

“Indeed, even for the imposition of criminal precautionary measures other than imprisonment, it is essential to demonstrate concretely the necessity of the measure for the application of criminal law and its consequent suitability for the intended purposes,” Fux reportedly wrote. “In light of these legal requirements, there is no concrete need for the precautionary measures imposed at this time.”

De Moraes’s threats caused the PL party to announce that Bolsonaro will no longer participate in a press conference alongside other PL members that the party had organized for a later date.

Hours after de Moraes imposed the restrictions on Bolsonaro, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions against de Moraes, other STF Justices, and court allies for their role in the “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro. According to Brazil’s Attorney General Jorge Messias, Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet, who recently called for Bolsonaro’s conviction, also had his U.S. visas revoked.

A group of veterans and their advocates are pushing the Defense Department to declassify tens of thousands of documents from the first Gulf War with the aim of finding clues to the potential toxic exposures of more than 100,000 troops from the military’s demolition of a chemical weapons complex in southern Iraq.

But their demands for the release of all classified documents from the Gulf War, which are stored in the National Archives, are reviving a contentious issue over the destruction in 1991 of a major weapons depot in the Khamisiyah region that the military found later contained chemical weapons.

“We believe the remaining [classified] documents on the first Gulf War may hold information researchers need to find a cure for Gulf War illness or at the very least improve treatments. But these documents have never been seen outside the intelligence community,” said Ronald Brown, a former Army specialist who served in the Gulf War and is helping to lead the effort.

There are more than 1 million classified documents that might contain information on potential health effects to troops from chemical weapons exposure in the first Gulf War, according to GulfLINK, a website created by the Defense Department. But only about 46,000 of those documents have been released.

The Government Accountability Office in 2004 published an investigation of the large-scale demolition operation at Khamisiyah and questioned the accuracy of the Defense Department’s projections about the path of the chemical plume and which troops were affected.

Brown and other veterans met in June with members of the Defense Health Agency in Virginia that manages the military’s global health system. They did so after sending a letter to President Donald Trump’s administration asking for help.

Brown said agency leaders pledged to work with the veterans.

“My team and I are eager to continue discussions [about] Khamisiyah and potential deployment-related exposures and to describe Department of Defense’s collaborative lines of effort to address past exposures, mitigate future hazards, and protect the health of our forces and veterans,” according to a letter to veterans from Tracie Lattimore, acting deputy assistant undersecretary of defense for health readiness policy and oversight.

Gulf War illness is a term to describe “medically unexplained chronic symptoms” experienced by some veterans who served in the Gulf War, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Chronic medical problems commonly reported by veterans include fatigue, joint pain, respiratory problems, headaches and gastrointestinal issues.
