Astronauts Plant Seed Pillows in New Space Agriculture Study

When the Crew-11 astronauts launched to the International Space Station on August 1, 2025, they carried with them another chapter in space farming: the latest VEG-03 experiments, complete with seed pillows ready for planting.

Growing plants provides nutrition for astronauts, as well as psychological benefits that help maintain crew morale during missions.

During VEG-03 MNO, astronauts will be able to choose what they want to grow from a seed library including Wasabi mustard greens, Red Russian Kale, and Dragoon lettuce.

From Seed to Space Salad

The experiment takes place inside Veggie, a chamber about the size of carry-on luggage. The system uses red, blue, and green LED lights to provide the right spectrum for plant growth.

Clear flexible bellows — accordion-like walls that expand to accommodate maturing plants — create a semi-controlled environment around the growing area.

Astronauts plant thin strips containing their selected seeds into fabric "seed pillows" filled with a special clay-based growing medium and controlled-release fertilizer.

The clay, similar to what's used on baseball fields, helps distribute water and air around the roots in the microgravity environment.

Crew members will monitor the plants, add water as needed, and document growth through regular photographs.

At harvest time, astronauts will eat some of the fresh produce while freezing other samples for return to Earth, where scientists will analyze their nutritional content and safety.

How this benefits space exploration

Fresh food will become critical as astronauts venture farther from Earth on missions to the Moon and Mars.

NASA aims to validate different kinds of crops to add variety to astronaut diets during long-duration space exploration missions, while giving crew members more control over what they grow and eat.

How this benefits humanity

The techniques developed for growing crops in space's challenging conditions may also improve agricultural practices on Earth.

Indoor crop cultivation approaches similar to what astronauts do in Veggie might also be adapted for horticultural therapy programs, giving elderly or disabled individuals new ways to experience gardening when traditional methods aren't accessible.

NASA’s Apollo Samples, LRO Help Scientists Forecast Moonquakes

As NASA prepares to send astronauts to the surface of the Moon’s south polar region for the first time ever during the Artemis III mission, scientists are working on methods to determine the frequency of moonquakes along active faults there.

Faults are cracks in the Moon’s crust that indicate that the Moon is slowly shrinking as its interior cools over time. The contraction from shrinking causes the faults to move suddenly, which generates quakes.

Between 1969 and 1977, a network of seismometers deployed by Apollo astronauts on the Moon’s surface recorded thousands of vibrations from moonquakes.

Moonquakes are rare, with the most powerful ones, about magnitude 5.0, occurring near the surface.

These types of quakes are much weaker than powerful quakes on Earth (magnitude 7.0 or higher), posing little risk to astronauts during a mission lasting just a few days.

But their effects on longer-term lunar surface assets could be significant. Unlike an earthquake that lasts for tens of seconds to minutes, a moonquake can last for hours, enough time to damage or tip over structures, destabilize launch vehicles on the surface, or interrupt surface operations.

“The hazard probability goes way up depending on how close your infrastructure is to an active fault,” said Thomas Watters, senior scientist emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum in Washington.

Watters is a long-time researcher of lunar geology and a co-investigator on NASA’s LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) camera.

Recently, he and Nicholas Schmerr, a planetary seismologist at the University of Maryland in College Park, developed a new method for estimating the magnitude of seismic shaking by analyzing evidence of dislodged boulders and landslides in an area, as the scientists reported on July 30 in the journal Science Advances.

Studies like these can help NASA plan lunar surface assets in safer locations.

There are thousands of faults across the Moon that may still be active and producing quakes.

Watters and his team have identified these faults by analyzing data from LRO, which has been circling the Moon since 2009, mapping the surface and taking pictures, providing unprecedented detail of features like faults, boulders, and landslides.

For this study, Watters and Schmerr chose to analyze surface changes from quakes generated by the Lee-Lincoln fault in the Taurus-Littrow valley.

NASA’s Apollo 17 astronauts, who landed about 4 miles west of the fault on Dec. 11, 1972, explored the area around the fault during their mission.

After spending almost five months in space, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 astronauts will discuss their science mission aboard the International Space Station during a news conference at 4:15 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, Aug. 20, from the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi will answer questions about their mission. The crew returned to Earth on Aug. 9.

Hubble Examines Low Brightness, High Interest Galaxy

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image zooms in on the feathery spiral arms of the galaxy NGC 45, which lies just 22 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus (the Whale).

The portrait uses data drawn from two complementary observing programs.

The first took a broad view of 50 nearby galaxies, leveraging Hubble’s ability to observe ultraviolet through visible into near-infrared light to study star formation in these galaxies.

The second program examined many of the same nearby galaxies as the first, narrowing in on a particular wavelength of red light called H-alpha.

Star-forming nebulae are powerful producers of H-alpha light, and several of these regions are visible across NGC 45 as bright pink-red patches.

These observing programs aimed to study star formation in galaxies of different sizes, structures, and degrees of isolation — and NGC 45 is a particularly interesting target.

Though it may appear to be a regular spiral galaxy, NGC 45 is a remarkable type called a low surface brightness galaxy.

Low surface brightness galaxies are fainter than the night sky itself, making them incredibly difficult to detect.

They appear unexpectedly faint because they have relatively few stars for the volume of gas and dark matter they carry.

In the decades since astronomers serendipitously discovered the first low surface brightness galaxy in 1986, researchers have learned that 30–60% of all galaxies may fall into this category.

Studying these hard-to-detect galaxies is key to understanding how galaxies form and evolve, and Hubble’s sensitive instruments are equal to the task.

Summer Triangle Corner: Altair

Altair is the last stop on our trip around the Summer Triangle! The last star in the asterism to rise for Northern Hemisphere observers before summer begins, brilliant Altair is high overhead at sunset at the end of the season in September.

Altair might be the most unusual of the three stars of the Triangle, due to its great speed: this star spins so rapidly that it appears “squished.”

Altair is the brightest star in the constellation of Aquila, the Eagle. A very bright star, Altair holds a notable place in the mythologies of cultures around the world.

As discussed in a previous article, Altair represents the cowherd in the ancient tale “Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.” While described as part of an eagle by ancient peoples around the Mediterranean, it was also seen as part of an eagle by the Koori people in Australia.

They saw the star itself as representing a wedge-tailed eagle, and two nearby stars as his wives, a pair of black swans. More recently, one of the first home computers was named after the star: the Altair 8800.

Altair’s rapid spinning was first detected in the 1960s.

The close observations that followed tested the limits of technology available to astronomers, eventually resulting in direct images of the star’s shape and surface by using a technique called interferometry, which combines the light from two or more instruments to produce a single image.

Predictions about how the surface of a rapidly spinning massive star would appear held true to the observations; models predicted a squashed, almost “pumpkin-like” shape instead of a round sphere, along with a dimming effect along the widened equator, and the observations confirmed this!

This equatorial dimming is due to a phenomenon called gravity darkening. Altair is wider at the equator than it is at the poles due to centrifugal force, resulting in the star’s mass bulging outwards at the equator.

This results in the denser poles of the star being hotter and brighter, and the less dense equator being cooler and therefore dimmer.

This doesn’t mean that the equator of Altair or other rapidly spinning stars are actually dark, but rather that the equator is dark in comparison to the poles; this is similar in a sense to sunspots.

If you were to observe a sunspot on its own, it would appear blindingly bright, but it is cooler than the surrounding plasma in the Sun and so appears dark in contrast.

NASA removes ‘Palestine’ option from contact form

Amid an international push for recognition of a Palestinian state, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration removed a “Palestine, state of” option on one of its online forms in response to a JNS query.

A “connect with us” form on the U.S. government space agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center website allows other U.S. agencies, research institutions and the general public to inquire with the Greenbelt, Md.-based center about opportunities for partnership and collaboration.

The NASA contact form no longer includes an option to select the state of “Palestine” from a drop-down menu.

“Thank you for bringing this to my attention. This option and any similar features have been removed from NASA websites,” Bethany Stevens, NASA’s press secretary, told JNS.

Stevens was formerly press secretary to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who strongly opposes the creation of a Palestinian state.

In recent days, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a city in Arkansas removed references to the state of “Palestine” from their websites after queries from JNS.

In May 2024, Xavier Becerra, then U.S. secretary of health and human services, referred to “Israel and Palestine” during a speech at the 77th World Health Assembly.

A spokesperson for the department told JNS at the time that Becerra had misspoken and did not intend to reflect a change in American policy.

Under the second Trump administration, the U.S. State Department has repeatedly been asked to clarify its position on a two-state solution.

While it publicly opposed a recent French and Saudi-led U.N. conference on the topic, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce has said on multiple occasions that the administration’s focus in the region is on ending the Israel-Hamas war, returning the hostages held in Gaza and seeing that Hamas is removed from power, declining to outline the administration’s policy on a “Palestinian” state.

NASA's new sun-studying mission 'PUNCH' attains its final form in Earth orbit

On Wednesday (Aug. 13), NASA announced that the four satellites of its exciting new sun-studying mission, PUNCH, have successfully reached their stations in orbit around our planet.

They all lie along Earth's day-night line to earn a continuous view of our star.

PUNCH, which stands for Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere, is meant to do precisely what its name suggests.

It's made up of four separate spacecraft, each of which NASA likens to the size of a standard suitcase, that have the power to collect rich data about the solar wind.

The solar wind refers to the stream of charged particles emanating from the sun at extremely fast speeds — like, a million miles per hour fast.

However, even though we know the solar wind is connected to the sun (specifically the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere), it remains unclear where the phenomenon's precise origin lies. That's where PUNCH comes in.

The four spacecraft associated with the mission — three wide-field imagers (WFI) and a near-field imager (NFI) — can work together to isolate specific features within the solar wind that may hold clues to the puzzle's solution.

"We have to have two kinds of instruments," PUNCH's principal investigator, Craig DeForest of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado previously said during a mission overview.

"One that looks close to the sun, where it's bright, and one that looks farther from the sun where it's fainter."

Here's where we can circle back to the title of PUNCH. The hope is that learning the intricacies of the solar wind can help scientists lay out the link between the sun's corona and what's known as the heliosphere.

That's the invisible bubble that surrounds our solar system and acts as the fence between us and the rest of the universe. Indeed, it's full to the brim of particles emitted from the sun's corona via the solar wind.

Potentially, PUNCH should be able to unify all of these components; and, to do so, the mission's quartet of data-collectors must be arranged in our planet's orbit very particularly so as to maximize solar-wind data collection.

This is what the team says has been achieved, as of Aug. 7, with its new update.

"We want to measure the solar wind globally around the star in near real time,” DeForest said in a new NASA statement about PUNCH achieving its formation.

"The planet gets in the way from the point of view of any one spacecraft, so we had to spread them around the planet to look everywhere all at once."

"We had to make the instrument either very far from the Earth, which would be cost prohibitive," DeForest previously said. "Or, we needed to make it as large as the Earth."

PUNCH delivered its first light images on April 18 to the delight of astronomers and space enthusiasts.

This confirmed that all four instruments were working as designed, which was a major milestone in the mission's timeline. (In fact, according to the new NASA release, those images are almost fully processed and stitched together to form an epic mosaic of PUNCH data).

And now that yet another milestone has been notched with all four instruments locked into their cosmic stations, perhaps the first keys to a major mystery of our solar system's bright yellow anchor will start revealing themselves.

The secret lies in synthetic materials that mimic the microscopic structures on the feet of gecko, which allow these remarkable reptiles to cling to virtually any surface using molecular forces called van der Waals interactions.

The space debris problem has been decades in the making. Since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, humanity has sent roughly 20,000 satellites into orbit.

While that pioneering satellite burned up harmlessly after a few months, many of its successors remain in space long after their missions ended.

Each collision or explosion creates thousands of new fragments, turning space into an increasingly hazardous environment for astronauts and functioning satellites alike.

Traditional cleanup approaches have struggled to find a solution to grabbing onto something that was never designed to be grabbed?

Dead satellites tumble unpredictably through space, making it nearly impossible for cleanup missions to dock with them using conventional methods.

Nets and harpoons offer limited attempts, while robotic arms require finding specific attachment points that may not exist.

The gecko-inspired solution sidesteps these problems entirely. Instead of trying to grab specific parts of defunct satellites, the cleanup satellites would be equipped with specially textured silicone surfaces that can stick to smooth areas like solar panels.

When a cleanup satellite approaches its target at precisely the right speed and angle, molecular forces create an instant bond with no mechanical latching required.

The team even has a backup plan if they are unable to connect. They suggest the same material can be attached to a deployable line that could be shot at the target like a chameleon's tongue.

Once attached, the cleanup satellite would gradually alter the debris's orbit, either sending it safely into Earth's atmosphere to burn up or parking it in a "graveyard orbit" far from active orbits.

The beauty of this approach lies in its simplicity and low cost, the technology could work on small, inexpensive satellites rather than requiring massive, complex spacecraft.

The international consortium, which includes researchers from Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, faces significant technical challenges.

The synthetic gecko materials must maintain their sticking power in the harsh environment of space, working reliably on surfaces that may be dusty, aged, or damaged.

The team must also develop sophisticated guidance systems to ensure their cleanup satellites can locate, approach, and dock with tumbling targets without creating more debris in the process.

If successful, gecko satellites could offer a cost effective way to tackle humanity's growing space junk problem. Ben-Larbi estimates that operational cleanup satellites could be ready within a decade.

Given that the commercialisation of space travel continues to accelerate, with thousands more satellites planned for launch, such cleanup technology may soon become essential for keeping space safe for future generations.

Mouse stem cells survive six months in space, produce healthy offspring on Earth

Living in space is incredibly hard on the human body. Our bodies are not built for zero gravity, from muscle loss to bone density issues.

Researchers at Kyoto University wanted to know if spaceflight affects the ability of sperm-producing stem cells to create healthy offspring in mice models.

The preliminary investigation study suggests these cells can withstand harsh space conditions and still produce healthy offspring.

Moreover, the study lays the groundwork for developing a practical method of preserving fertility during future, multi-year space missions, potentially paving the way for human procreation beyond Earth.

Healthy offspring

The study used spermatogonial stem cells from mice, a common model for studying reproductive biology due to their shorter reproductive lifespan than humans.

The team took stem cells from mice, then froze them solid, a process called cryopreservation. The cells were packed and sent to the International Space Station, where they stayed in a deep freezer for six months.

Upon their return to Earth, the researchers thawed the cells and found no apparent abnormalities.

The cell population was expanded using in vitro techniques before transplanting it into the testes of mice.

The team then waited. Within three to four months, these mice successfully mated and produced offspring.

The resulting pups were healthy, with normal gene expression and no visible signs of abnormality.

Moreover, the findings suggest that cryopreserved germ cells can stay fertile for at least six months, a key finding for future long-duration space missions.

“When examining the newborn mice, the research team observed that they were healthy and exhibited normal gene expression.

These results suggest that cryopreserved germ cells maintain fertility for at least six months,” the researchers wrote in the press statement.

According to lead author Mito Kanatsu-Shinohara, this research is vital for understanding the storage limits for future human spaceflight.

More study required

A surprising outcome of the study was comparing the effects of spaceflight and the cryopreservation process.

However, it turned out that the chemicals used to freeze the cells caused more damage than the six months of exposure to the space environment.

But the work isn’t over yet. The researchers highlight that more work is needed.

While these first-generation mice appear healthy, further study is required to determine their lifespan and fertility to rule out any long-term issues.

Proper analysis of the lifespan and reproductive capabilities of these mice and their future generations is still required.

“We still have some spermatogonial stem cells frozen on the ISS, so we will continue to conduct further analysis,” said Kanatsu-Shinohara.

Space agencies and private companies are becoming increasingly interested in human space tourism. The potential health effects of spaceflight are a major concern.

The unusual space environment, with its gravitational changes, disrupted circadian rhythms, and high radiation levels, can cause significant harm to the body. These stressors could affect a human’s ability to produce healthy offspring.

This study is an important step toward understanding reproduction in space using animal models, which could pave the way for future research on human cells.

Crew Sets Up Space Hardware to Make Fiber Optics and Brew Lunar Sake

Fiber manufacturing and lunar brewing wrapped up the research week aboard the International Space Station helping NASA and its international partners promote the commercialization of space.

The Expedition 73 crew also continued its space biology studies to keep astronauts healthy while packing a resupply ship for its upcoming departure and maintaining life support systems.

NASA Flight Engineer Jonny Kim opened up the Destiny laboratory module’s Microgravity Science Glovebox and installed fabrication hardware inside to explore the commercial production of optical fibers in microgravity.

Operators on the ground will remotely control the hardware as it pulls the thin glass strands that engineers will analyze to determine if the quality exceeds fiber production in Earth’s gravity environment.

Results may improve manufacturing techniques for both Earth and space communication industries.

JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Kimiya Yui spent his day inside the Kibo laboratory module reconfiguring a research incubator, called the Cell Biology Experiment Facility-L (CBEF-L).

Yui replaced trays and compartments inside the scientific device to accommodate a technology demonstration of fermentation and brewing in microgravity.

The JAXA DASSAI MOON study will simulate lunar gravity in the CBEF-L, ferment and brew sake yeast, then send frozen samples back to Earth for analysis.

Results may allow a familiar taste from Earth to be produced on the Moon for future visitors.

NASA Flight Engineer Zena Cardman began her shift processing samples for analysis for the CIPHER suite of 14 human research investigations.

The second part of her CIPHER study saw Cardman take a series of computer-based tests to track space-related changes to her brain function.

Insights may lead to advanced tools such as brain scans, thinking tests, and task simulations to monitor and protect astronaut cognition during long-duration space missions.

NASA Flight Engineer Mike Fincke spent his day inside the Destiny lab servicing life support components and replacing communications hardware.

Fincke first accessed a thermal system rack and inspected its hoses then gained access to a failed GPS receiver behind the rack and replaced it.

Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, station commander and flight engineer respectively, continued their weeklong investigation into how weightlessness affects tiny blood vessels, or the microcirculatory system.

Once again the duo attached electrodes to their head, fingers, and toes, and conducted blood pressure checks to observe how living in space affects their cardiovascular health.

Ryzhikov also packed trash inside the Progress 91 cargo craft ahead of next month’s departure while Zubritsky cleaned dust filters in the Rassvet module and configured cameras.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Oleg Platonov spent his day inside the Nauka science module working on its ventilation system and checking its laptop computers.

He also explored how weightlessness is affecting his sense of balance and direction by wearing virtual reality glasses and electrodes around his eyes and forehead then responding to computer-controlled stimuli.

New Delhi: ‘Atmanirbharta’ and India’s push toward self-reliance even in the space sector found mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech from the Red Fort Friday.

Congratulating Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his recent mission to the International Space Station (ISS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is working towards building its own space station, and will also launch its very own human spaceflight mission soon.

“We are working on becoming self-reliant, atmanirbhar, even in the space sector. We are preparing for the Gaganyaan Mission. We are also preparing to set up our own space station,” PM Modi said.

Indian astronaut Shukla, who was part of a 20-day Axiom-4 Mission, has returned from the ISS and will be returning to India in a few days.

As part of this mission, he led seven microgravity experiments designed by top Indian research institutes.

In 2023, setting up the roadmap for India’s space programme, PM Modi had set an ambitious target for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to design and set up India’s very own space station, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), by 2035.

In subsequent meetings, it was announced that the first module of the space station—built in line with the ISS—will be launched as early as 2028.

What is the BAS?

The Bharatiya Antariksh Station will be designed to have a crew command module, habitat module, propulsion module and docking ports.

In a media briefing earlier this year, ISRO chairperson V. Narayanan had said that the entire BAS capsule is estimated to weigh around 50 tonnes, which will be increased in future, depending on the expansion of the station.

Senior experts from ISRO said that with the existing ISS in its final leg of operations—expected to be retired by 2030—the significance of BAS increases globally.

“India’s BAS will serve as a gateway to interplanetary missions for India, and will also become an international platform for collaborative space research,” a senior ISRO official said.

The current ISS in orbit performs the functions of bringing together international flight crews, coordinating multiple launch vehicles, ensuring global distribution of launch and flight operations, training, engineering and development facilities, communications networks, and the international scientific research community.

The ISS was designed between 1984 and 1993 as a joint project, with parts of the station constructed by the US, Canada, Japan, Europe and Russia.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ISS is the largest human-made object ever to orbit Earth, having a pressurised volume of approximately 900 m3 (31,000 ft3), and a mass of over 400,000 kg (900,000 lbs).

It orbits at an altitude ranging between 370 km and 460 km (200–250 nmi).

Duffy says climate science will ‘move aside,’ with NASA only focusing on space exploration

Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy said Thursday that climate and earth science at the agency will “move aside” as it refocuses solely on space exploration.

“All the climate science and all of the other priorities that the last administration had at NASA we’re going to move aside, and all of the science that we do is going to be directed towards exploration, which is the mission of NASA,” Duffy, who also leads the Transportation Department, told Fox Business.

“That’s why we have NASA — is to explore, not to do all of these earth sciences,” he added.

NASA, which stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, explores both air and space. It has historically conducted science related to both Earth and space, including climate science.

A pivot away from climate science is not necessarily a surprise — the Trump administration has sought to deny and downplay climate change’s impacts and has moved to dismantle scientific research, including by dismissing scientists working on the National Climate Assessment.

But moving to get rid of all climate science at the agency may still be an escalation.

Duffy’s comments come as the administration also seeks to curtail environmental reviews for the space industry.
