WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire(opens in a new tab)/ – Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Korean Air announced today the airline's intent to purchase 103 of Boeing's fuel-efficient family of airplanes to modernize its fleet and support the carrier's growth as it fully integrates operations with Asiana Airlines over the next several years.

Korean Air's commitment will be the airline's largest-ever order and Boeing's largest widebody order from an Asian carrier. When finalized, the deal will mark Korean Air's first order for the 777-8F and will support an estimated 135,000 jobs across the United States. The order will be posted to Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website once it is completed and includes:

Today's agreement was signed during the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable "Partnership for a Manufacturing Renaissance," and presided over by Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Kim Jung-kwan, South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

Korean Air's orders and commitments for Boeing airplanes in 2025 surpasses 150 units, following the airline's incremental order in March(opens in a new tab) for 20 777-9s and 20 787-10s.

"We are honored to strengthen our partnership with Korean Air through this landmark agreement, which reflects the value and capabilities of Boeing's market-leading airplane family," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "As Korean Air transitions to a larger unified carrier, we are committed to supporting the airline's growth with one of the world's most efficient fleets."

Key facts:

The 777-9 can seat 426 passengers in a two-class configuration with a range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles) and will reduce fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it will replace.

The 787-10 can carry up to 336 passengers with a range of 11,730 km (6,330 nautical miles).

The 737-10, the largest model in the 737 MAX family, can carry as many as 230 passengers with a range of up to 5,740 km (3,100 nautical miles), while reducing fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces. The airplane's efficiency and flexibility will enable Korean Air to serve more passengers on more routes with the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle airplane.

The 777-8 Freighter will be the world's largest and most capable twin-engine freighter, offering the highest payload and lowest operating cost per tonne of any large freighter and 30% better fuel efficiency and emissions than the airplanes it will replace.

Korean Air currently operates 108 Boeing airplanes including 737s, 747s, 777s and 787s. With 72 Boeing jets on order; the carrier's order book will grow to 175 airplanes once the deal is finalized.

Short-term Treasury yields fall, while long-term yields rise after Trump orders removal of Fed’s Cook

The U.S. Treasury yield curve steepened withshort-term yields falling and long-term yields risingafter U.S. President Donald Trump moved to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from the central bank’s board.

The 2-year yield was more than 3 basis points lower at 3.698%. The 10-year Treasury yield traded more than 1 basis point higher at 4.289%, and the 30-year yield added more than 4 basis points to 4.937%. One basis point is equal to 0.01% and yields and prices move in opposite directions.

Investors bet on lower rates in the near future, but higher rates over the long-termafter Trump chipped away at the Fed’s independence by announcing the removal of Cook from her position via a post on his platform, Truth Social.

The president cited allegations by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte that Cook made false statements on one or more of her mortgage agreements.

Cook said in a statement Monday evening, “President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so.” Cook, who is the first Black woman to become a Fed Governor, said: “I will not resign” and that she will continue to serve in her role.

“The President is going to remake the Board Governors of the Federal Reserve over the next year, and he’s doing so in very unconventional ways– we’ve had a resignation and now a termination, opening the door to accelerate this change,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. “Trump has essentially usurped the Fed’s forward guidance function for the time being and telling markets lower rates are coming, which is being manifest in a steeper yield curve, with short term treasuries dropping like a rock.”

And so investors bet perhaps the Fed would be less attentive to inflation in the future, making ownership of long-term bonds less favorable and sending those rates lower. The U.S. dollar declined vs. various currencies for a similar reason.

Investors also parsed through a raft of economic reports on Tuesday.July’s U.S. durable goods orders reading was better than economists polled by Dow Jones had expected. Consumer confidence data for August also came in stronger than expected.

They will now look to the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, later in the week for clues as to whether inflation is in a place where it would make sense for the central bank to lower rates, regardless of the political encroachment by Trump.

Scientists have previously analyzed transit light curves from exoplanets and their host stars to look at the smaller dips and peaks.

This helps determine the host star’s properties, such as its overall level of spottiness, inclination angle of the planet’s orbit, the tilt of the star’s spin compared to our line of sight, and other factors.

Sagynbayeva’s model uses light curves that include not only transit information, but also the rotation of the star itself to provide even more detailed information about these stellar properties.

“Knowing more about the star in turn helps us learn even more about the planet, like a feedback loop,” said co-author Brett Morris, a senior software engineer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

“For example, at cool enough temperatures, stars can have water vapor in their atmospheres. If we want to look for water in the atmospheres of planets around those stars — a key indicator of habitability — we better be very sure that we’re not confusing the two.”

To test their model, Sagynbayeva and her team looked at transits from a planet called TOI 3884 b, located around 141 light-years away in the northern constellation Virgo.

Discovered by TESS in 2022, astronomers think the planet is a gas giant about five times bigger than Earth and 32 times its mass.

The StarryStarryProcess analysis suggests that the planet’s cool, dim star — called TOI 3384 — has concentrations of spots at its north pole, which also tips toward Earth so that the planet passes over the pole from our perspective.

Currently, the only available data sets that can be fit by Sagynbayeva’s model are in visible light, which excludes infrared observations taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

But NASA’s upcoming Pandora mission will benefit from tools like this one.

Pandora, a small satellite developed through NASA’s Astrophysics Pioneers Program, will study the atmospheres of exoplanets and the activity of their host stars with long-duration multiwavelength observations.

The Pandora mission’s goal is to determine how the properties of a star’s light differs when it passes through a planet’s atmosphere so scientists can better measure those atmospheres using Webb and other missions.

“The TESS satellite has discovered thousands of planets since it launched in 2018,” said Allison Youngblood, TESS project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“While Pandora will study about 20 worlds, it will advance our ability to pick out which signals come from stars and which come from planets.

The more we understand the individual parts of a planetary system, the better we understand the whole — and our own.”

AT&T to buy wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for $23 billion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -AT&T said on Tuesday it will purchase key wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for about $23 billion, as the the U.S. telecom provider seeks to boost its network in a competitive market.

In June,President Donald Trump prodded satellite communications and Dish TV parent EchoStar and Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr to reach an amicable dealover the fate of the company's wireless spectrum licenses, the company said.

The deal marks thelatest major investment by AT&T to accelerate its fiber and 5G network build-out as the wireless market saturates and internet usage surges.

Shares of EchoStar jumped more than 40% in premarket trading, while AT&T rose 1.5%.

In May, the FCC told EchoStar it was investigating the company's compliance obligations to provide 5G service in the United States, questioning EchoStar's buildout extension and mobile-satellite service.

Trump met on June 12 with EchoStar Chair Charlie Ergen andlater called Carr to take part in the meeting. EchoStar had been seeking to shield its cache of wireless spectrum licenses from the threat of revocation by the FCC.

EchoStar said the AT&T deal is part of its ongoing efforts to resolve the FCC's inquiries.

"This transaction puts our business on a solid financial path, further facilitating EchoStar's long-term success, and enhancing our ability to innovate and compete as a hybrid network operator," said EchoStar CEO Hamid Akhavan, adding it continues to evaluate strategic opportunities for its remaining spectrum portfolio.

U.S. satellite TV provider DirecTV terminated its agreement to acquire EchoStar's satellite television business last year, which includes rival Dish TV, over a failed debt-exchange offer.

In May, AT&T clinched a deal to acquire Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber operations for $5.75 billion in cash.

AT&T's bundled plans that combine high-speed fiber with mobile offerings have resonated well with customers as rivals like T-Mobile and Verizon double down on promotions.

The company added 401,000 net monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers during the April to June period.

The licenses cover more than 400 markets across the U.S. in total and will strengthen AT&T's low-band and mid-band spectrum holdings, the company said.

The companies also agreed to expand their network services agreement, enabling EchoStar to operate as a hybrid mobile network operator providing wireless service under the Boost Mobile brand. AT&T will be the primary network partner.

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was made to press Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for an answer after the Democrat repeatedly refused to say if he’d accept more police resourcing from the Trump administration, moments after he demanded President Donald Trump restore $800 million in grants for violence prevention programs.

Johnson appeared on MSNBC on Tuesday to continue to push back against Trump’s suggestion on Friday that he may send National Guard troops to Chicago and New York City, as he has in Washington, D.C., as part of a crackdown on crime.

The mayor blasted Trump from the outset for threatening his city with a “military occupation” that he said was both “illegal” and “unconstitutional.” He added that it was unnecessary, citing “a precipitous decline in violent crime in every single category” under his leadership.

Listing statistics, he continued: “If this president was actually serious about driving violence down in the city of Chicago and American cities across this country, he would work with mayors to make sure that we have the necessary investments to continue to do the work that we have been doing.”

Scarborough, who has advocated for cooperation between cities and the federal government on crime, asked what a “productive relationship with the Trump administration looks like?”

“An excellent question,” Johnson said. “First of all, he could start by restoring the over $800 million that was taken away from violence prevention efforts back in April.” He continued to detail work with community-led conflict resolution organizations and trained mental health professionals that, in some cases, have circumvented the need for a police officer to turn up at “that scene.

Scarborough agreed that these were “great programs” before asking whether the mayor would also accept federal funding that would put extra police officers on the street in a line of questioning that quickly escalated into a heated back-and-forth.

SCARBOROUGH: So let me ask you, Mr. Mayor, those all sound like great programs. I’m curious, would you also like to get federal funding to help put 5000 more cops on the street in Chicago? Would that help drive down crime?

JOHNSON: Well, look, policing by itself is not the full strategy.

SCARBOROUGH [INTERRUPTING]: No, I understand that. You’ve talked about the other things you want. And I said those are good and important programs. But I’m asking also, would 5000 more police officers on the street in Chicago be helpful to go along with all of those social programs that a lot of cities are engaging in and having success with?

JOHNSON: Well, look, here’s the best way I can put it, Joe, is that in the 90s, when I was in high school, we had 3000 more police officers, and we had 900 people being murdered every single year in Chicago. It’s just not policing alone. Of course we want more detectives.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) now uses HLS to map crop emergence at the field scale in the corn belt, allowing farmers to better plan their growing seasons.

Ranchers in Colorado use the dataset to decide where to graze their cattle during periods of drought. HLS also informs the use and termination of cover crops in the Chesapeake Bay area.

In 2024, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employed HLS to identify where to focus aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

A New and Improved HLS

In the July 2025 issue of Remote Sensing of Environment, a team of researchers outlined the HLS V2.0 surface reflectance dataset and algorithms. The team included seven NASA co-authors, members of the 2018–2023 Landsat Science Team, and ESA.

The lead author, Junchang Ju [GSFC—Remote Sensing Scientist], has been the technical lead on HLS since its inception.

Co-author Christopher Neigh [GSFC—Landsat 8/9 Project Scientist] is the principal investigator on the HLS project. V2.0, which was completed in Summer 2023, incorporates several major improvements over HLS V1.4, the most recent publicly available HLS product. The HLS production team at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), led by Madhu Sridhar [University of Alabama in Huntsville—Research Scientist], ensures consistent data access through close collaboration with ESA and the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC).

HLS V1.4 covered about 30% of the global land area, providing data on North America and other select locations. HLS V2.0 provides data at a spatial resolution of 30 m (98 ft) with near-global coverage from 2013 onward.

The dataset includes all land masses except Antarctica. HLS V2.0 also has key algorithmic improvements in atmospheric correction, cloud masking, and bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction.

Together, these algorithms “harmonize” the data, or ensure that the distinct Landsat and Sentinel-2 datasets can effectively be used interchangeably – see Animation 2.

HLS V2.0 in Action

The increased frequency of observations improved the ability of the scientific community to track disaster recovery, changes in phenology, agricultural intensification, rapid urban growth, logging, and deforestation.

Researchers are already putting these advances to use.

The land disturbance product (DIST-ALERT) is a global land change monitoring system that uses HLS V2.0 data to track vegetation anomalies in near real-time – see Figure 1.

DIST-ALERT captures agricultural expansion, urban growth, fire, flooding, logging, drought, landslides, and other forces of change to vegetation. Amy Pickens [University of Maryland, Department of Geographical Sciences—Assistant Research Professor] said that HLS is the perfect dataset for tracking disturbances because of the frequency of observations.

DIST-ALERT was created through Observational Products for End-Users from Remote Sensing Analysis (OPERA), a project at NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). OPERA products respond to agency needs identified by the SNWG.

In 2018, SNWG identified tracking surface disturbance as a key need. OPERA partnered with the Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) lab at University of Maryland to develop the change detection algorithm.

To track changes in vegetation, the DIST-ALERT system establishes a rolling baseline – meaning that for any given pixel, the vegetation cover is compared against vegetation cover from the same 31-day window in the previous three years.

The primary algorithm detects any vegetation loss relative to the established baseline. A secondary algorithm flags any spectral anomaly (i.e., any change in reflectance) compared to that same baseline.

This approach ensures that the algorithm catches non-vegetation change (e.g., new building or road projects in unvegetated areas).

Used together, these algorithms can identify long-term changes in agricultural expansion, deforestation, and urbanization alongside short-term changes in crop harvest, drought, selective logging, and the impacts of disasters.

On average, DIST-ALERT is made available on LP DAAC within six hours of when new HLS data is available. Currently, the dataset does not provide attribution to disturbances.

Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research [Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE)] runs two projects that detect deforestation in the Amazon: Programa de Cálculo do Desflorestamento da Amazônia (PRODES) and Sistema de Detecção de Desmatamento em Tempo Real (DETER).

The GLAD lab created its own forest loss alerts – GLAD-L and GLAD-S2 – using Landsat and Sentinel-2 data respectively.

Global Forest Watch integrates GLAD-L and GLAD-S2 data with Radar for Detecting Deforestation (RADD) observations – derived from synthetic aperture radar data from Copernicus Sentinel-1 – into an integrated deforestation alert.

The implementation of these alert systems, some of which have been around for decades, have been shown to impact deforestation rates in the tropics.

For example, a 2021 study in Nature Climate Change found that deforestation alerts decreased the probability of deforestation in Central Africa by 18% relative to the average 2011–2016 levels.

DIST-ALERT is distinct from other alert systems in a few ways. First, it has global coverage. Second, the rolling baseline allows for tracking changes in seasonality and disturbances to dynamic ecosystems.

When HLS V2.0 data are input to DIST-ALERT, the system is also better at identifying disturbances in cloudy ecosystems than other individual alert systems – because it is more likely to obtain clear observations.

This also enables it to identify the start and end of the disturbance more precisely.

Pickens said that the DIST-ALERT team is already working with end-users who are implementing their data product. She has spoken to some who use the system to help logging companies prove that they are complying with regulations.

The U.S. Census Bureau is also using DIST-ALERT to monitor fast-growing communities so that they can do targeted assessments in the interim between the larger decennial census.

Alongside DIST-ALERT, OPERA has also been developing the Dynamic Surface Water eXtent (DSWx) product suite, which employs HLS to track surface water (e.g., lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and floods) around the globe – see Figure 2.

These new products represent the new applications made possible by the HLS interagency and international collaboration.

Conclusion

HLS is set to continue improving land monitoring efforts across the globe. Meanwhile, the HLS science team is working to improve the algorithms for a more seamless harmonization of Landsat 8 and 9 and Sentinel-2 data.

They are also working to improve the cloud-masking algorithm, have recently released vegetation indices, and are working on developing a low-latency (six-hour) HLS surface reflectance product, all while incorporating user feedback.

Looking ahead, the launch of future Sentinel and Landsat satellites will further the development of HLS. The additional data and unique capabilities will continue to meet researchers’ need for more frequent, high-quality satellite observations of Earth’s land surface.

Frontier Airlines goes after struggling rival Spirit’s customers with 20 new routes

Frontier Airlines is going after customers of Spirit Airlines whose financial footing has gotten so shaky in recent weeks that it warned earlier this month it might not be able to survive another year without more cash.

Frontier on Tuesday announced 20 routes it plans to start this winter, many of them in major Spirit markets like its base at Fort Lauderdale International Airport in Florida. Frontier overlaps with Spirit on 35% of its capacity, more than any other airline, according to a Monday note from Deutsche Bank airline analyst Michael Linenberg.

Some of Frontier’s new routes from Fort Lauderdale include flights to Detroit, Houston, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s also rolling out routes from Houston to New Orleans; San Pedro Sula, Honduras; and Guatemala City.

Frontier had tried and failed to merge with its budget-airline rival several times since 2022.

“I’m not here to talk about M&A,” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday when asked whether Frontier would buy Spirit. Biffle said he expects that Frontier would pick up the majority of Spirit’s market share if Spirit collapsed.

Both carriers have struggled from changing customer tastes for more upmarket seats and trips abroad, an oversupply of domestic capacity, and higher labor and other costs. Spirit’s situation has become more direhowever, after it emerged from four months of bankruptcy protection in March facing many of the same problems.

Stock prices of rival airlines surged after Spirit’s warning earlier this month.

Biffle said the carrier wants to become the country’s largest budget airline and has rolled out loyalty matching programs to grab more customers. Frontier’s capacity was slightly smaller than Spirit’s in the second quarter, through the latter had slashed its flying by nearly 24% from a year earlier, while Frontier was down only 2%.

Spirit last week said it drew down the entire $275 million of its revolver and while it reached a two-year extension on its credit card processing agreement with U.S. Bank National Association, it agreed that it would hold back up to $3 million a day from the carrier.

The airline lost $245.8 million in the second quarter. Frontier lost $70 million.

Spirit has been looking for ways to slash costs, including furloughing and demoting hundreds more pilots and cutting unprofitable routes. Hundreds of flight attendants are on unpaid leaves of absence.

Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in an Aug. 12 staff memo after its “going concern” warning that “the team and I are confident that we can build a Spirit that will continue to provide consumers the unmatched value that they have come to expect for many years to come.”

The carrier reached a deal with bondholders who agreed to convert debt to equity in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but it didn’t cut other costs like renegotiating aircraft leases. Leasing firms have been reaching out to rivals in recent weeks to gauge whether competitors would take any of the Airbus planes that are in Spirit’s hands, according to people familiar with the matter.

Approximately 9 out of 10 adults over the age of 50 are on some type of regular medication. Some expensive, some not so much.
