WHO says six hospitals evacuated in Iran but health system holding up

Six hospitals in Iran have been evacuated since the start of the US-Israeli war on the country, but the health system is holding up for now, a World Health Organization official said on Monday.

WHO regional director Hanan Balkhy said Iran’s healthcare infrastructure remained robust and authorities had not requested emergency relief from the global health agency.

"The primary healthcare and the health infrastructure of Iran is quite good and robust, and they're able to accommodate the casualties as of now," Balkhy told Reuters.

The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on an Iranian company over cyber-attacks targeting EU member states and partners, the Council of the EU said.

The company, Emennet Pasargad, unlawfully accessed a French subscriber database and offered the data for sale on the dark web, the Council said in a statement.

It also said the firm compromised advertising billboards to spread disinformation during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and breached a Swedish SMS service affecting a large number of EU citizens.

Under the sanctions, the company is subject to an asset freeze and EU citizens and companies are banned from providing funds or economic resources to it.

Iran has asked India to release three tankers seized in February as part of talks aimed at securing safe passage for Indian-flagged or India-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Indian authorities seized the vessels near Indian waters, alleging they had concealed or altered their identities and were involved in illegal ship-to-ship transfers.

Iran’s ambassador to New Delhi met officials at India’s foreign ministry on Monday to discuss the issue, one source said, adding Tehran had also sought supplies of some medicines and medical equipment.

A Pakistan-flagged oil tanker has transited the Strait of Hormuz and is sailing toward Pakistan after traveling close to Iran's coastline, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing ship-tracking data.

Hegseth’s call for ‘no mercy’ to Iranians deemed war crime

The threat to take no prisoners in a conflict is illegal under US and international law

US War Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing accusations of violating domestic and international laws prohibiting war crimes by declaring that “no quarter” or mercy would be given to Iranian forces.

The legal definition of the term means surrendering Iranian soldiers would be executed by American troops rather than taken prisoner. US officials and legal experts have responded by accusing Hegseth of encouraging war crimes.

”We will keep pressing. We will keep pushing, keep advancing. No quarter, no mercy for our enemies,” Hegseth said at a press briefing on Iran on Friday.

Some US officials and legal scholars have argued that the remarks went beyond tough rhetoric and strayed into criminality.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona blasted Hegseth, saying his comment “isn’t some wannabe tough guy line” but rather an illegal order that jeopardizes US military service members. It also shows “there was never a clear strategy for this war,” the lawmaker added.

Dan Maurer, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel and judge advocate, published a hypothetical memo Hegseth should receive from the Pentagon legal counsel, informing him of criminal liability for himself and any subordinate who followed his directive to deny quarter.

The Hague Convention and the Geneva Convention forbid harming enemy combatants unable to defend themselves or who have surrendered and explicitly prohibit declaring “that no quarter will be given.”

These rules are enshrined in US domestic law. The 1996 War Crimes Act directly cites the article banning “no quarter” in its definition of war crimes.

The US military has prohibited orders to take no prisoners since 1863, when US President Abraham Lincoln issued the Lieber Code during the Civil War.

Hegseth has previously dismissed concerns about international law, claiming he would not abide by “stupid rules of engagement” and “politically correct wars.”

His remarks also come two weeks after a US strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran that killed more than 170 people, most of them children.

Trump Blasts Starmer Over UK Iran Response, But Ordinary Britons Don’t Want Involvement, Either.

Donald Trump has criticized several key allies, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Australia, for their hesitation to join his proposed multinational naval force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway has become a flashpoint amid the ongoing Iran war, with oil supply routes disrupted due to Iranian aggression.

Iran Strikes an Italian Base in Kuwait, Destroying a Drone

A military base in Kuwait hosting Italian forces was hit by an Iranian drone strike on Sunday, destroying an Italian-owned drone but leaving no injuries, the Italian Defense Ministry announced.

In an official statement, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto informed that an Iranian drone struck a shelter at Kuwait’s Al Salem base that housed an unmanned reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the Italian Air Task Force.

“All Italian military personnel present at the base were safe and were not involved in the attack. I immediately informed the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Ministers, and all leaders of the political parties — both in the majority and the opposition — of the incident, in order to ensure maximum transparency and a shared understanding of the situation,” the statement read in part.

Crosetto emphasized that the loss of the aircraft has no impact on the safety of the Italian military personnel deployed in the area which, he detailed, are carrying out collaborative activities with Kuwait and Italy’s Gulf Allies as part of the “Italian National Contingent Command Air – Task Force Air Kuwait,” an anti-ISIS initiative launched by Italy in 2014 that, according to Crosetto, is “currently making every effort to facilitate a de-escalation of the current situation.”

“In recent days, military personnel had already been reduced, leaving only essential personnel at the base. The loss of the aircraft has no impact on the safety of our military personnel deployed in the area,” Crosetto said.

Italy’s ANSA news agency reports that Sunday’s attack marked the fourth of its kind against a base housing Italian forces in the Middle East over the past two weeks.

ANSA, citing Chief of Defense Staff Luciano Portola, detailed that the destroyed Italian-owned unmanned aircraft was a “Predator/Reaper” drone that was “indispensable for carrying out operational activities and had remained deployed to ensure the continuity of operations.”

Speaking to SkyTG24, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that there is “no risk and no problem for our military” and stressed that Kuwait is a “military target for Iran because of the presence of U.S. bases in that country.”

“We will not be intimidated; we will honor our international commitments,” Tajani reportedly said.

“Italians are not a target for the Iranians,” the Foreign Minster asserted to Rai News, and reiterated that Italy is not at war.

Last week, an Italian military base in the town of Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, was hit by a missile. Similar to Sunday’s attack at the base in Kuwait, the attack at the Erbil base left no injuries and only material damages.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has drawn criticism for calling on migrants in Germany to vote against the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Merkel, who served as the architect of the European Migrant Crisis in 2015, when she unilaterally decided to open the EU’s borders to unprecedented waves of foreigners from the Middle East and Africa, resulting in dramatic demographic transformations in her country and across the continent, appears to have let the cat out of the bag as to her motivation for doing so.

In an interview with establishment journalist Jagoda Marinić for Hesse Broadcasting earlier this month, Merkel openly called on the migrant population of Germany — many of whom she personally allowed into the country — to vote against the political right and vote against the AfD.

“I would like people with a migration background… or with a migration history… we join forces with those who do not make common cause with the AfD.”

“I wish everyone would stand together against this party. And we do not split ourselves as a political center, I say, onto those who have a migration history and those who have none. Because then our country would become weaker against the AfD,” she continued.

“Whether a German citizen has been a German citizen for two years or for four days or the entire family for three generations, it doesn’t matter. We are the German people… We must also stick together when we have to take action against people who have completely different ideas about our future.”

Anti-mass migration activist Naomi Seibt, who has sought asylum in the United States for fear of political persecution in Germany for her right-wing views, said of the Merkel interview: “The snake says the quiet part out loud.”

State Department Issues Warning to Iraq’s Prime Minister as Iran-Backed Militias Launch Attacks on U.S and Allied Forces

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is facing mounting criticism over his government’s failure to prevent Iran-backed militias from launching attacks on American and allied personnel across Iraq.

The pressure intensified after a missile reportedly struck a helipad inside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad early Saturday.

Following the incident, the embassy warned that all U.S. citizens in Iraq should leave the country “immediately.”

“Iran-aligned terrorist militias have attacked the International Zone in central Baghdad on multiple occasions,” the embassy said in a statement.

U.S. Condemns Iran-Backed Attacks

A State Department spokesperson condemned the attacks while speaking to Fox News Digital.

“The United States strongly condemns attacks by Iran and Iran-backed terrorist militias against U.S. diplomatic personnel and facilities, civilian targets, and energy infrastructure in Iraq, particularly in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”

The spokesperson added that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on the Iraqi government to take action.

“As Secretary Rubio has said, the Iraqi government must take all possible measures to safeguard U.S. diplomatic personnel and facilities and ensure militia groups cannot use Iraqi territory to threaten the United States or the region.”

“Doing so is in Iraq’s interest,” the spokesperson said, adding:

“We retain a range of options to protect our interests.

“We do not preview sanctions or sanction actions.”

How a rocket launch can create a jellyfish-like light

Scientific analysis and space observation experts believe that this phenomenon is most probably due to a rocket plume from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch.

It is known that rockets produce a lot of exhaust gases during their flight through space. These gases expand at high altitudes. Expanding gases produce glowing clouds.

Although the rocket was launched at an extremely remote location in the United States, the plume of the rocket rose to extremely high altitudes, even above the Earth's atmosphere. At this point, the plume was still illuminated by the Sun's rays.

As the rocket travelled through space, the gases expanded, and the Sun's rays reflected off the expanded gases, forming a bright, glowing cloud that was visible over long distances.

Due to the Earth's curvature, the plume of the rocket was visible even at distances of thousands of kilometres away, especially at twilight time.

Why are such events visible across huge distances

These rocket plumes extend hundreds of kilometres into space. Once they get this high, they will still receive sunlight even after the sun sets for people on the ground.

This means that they will look like a bright glowing cloud in the night sky. The thin atmosphere will also allow the gases to disperse in interesting ways.

In fact, if conditions are just right, these illuminated rocket plumes will be visible across entire regions or even multiple countries. Similar incidents have been reported in places such as Alaska, California, and various countries in Europe following a major rocket launch.

However, such incidents rarely occur in India, and this is why this incident in Sikkim has caused such a stir.
