The Vermont Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week on a lawsuit challenging Burlington’s policy allowing non-U.S. citizens to vote in local elections, including school budget votes. No ruling has been issued as of today.

The case, Morin v. City of Burlington, was originally filed in June 2024 by the Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE), a conservative nonprofit.

The suit targets Burlington’s March 2023 charter amendment, approved by 68% of voters, which permits noncitizen residents over the age of 18 to vote on Town Meeting Day, in city council, mayoral, and school district elections.

Burlington, with 44,000 residents, has about 10% foreign-born population, including refugees and green card holders. The policy applies to roughly 1,500 eligible noncitizens. It covers municipal matters like zoning and budgets but not state or federal elections.

Plaintiffs argue the policy violates Chapter II, Section 42 of the Vermont Constitution, which states: “Every person… who is a citizen of the United States… shall be entitled to all the privileges of a voter of this state.”

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have quietly raked in billions as the Pentagon has invested in new defense technology, according to a new Washington Post investigation published Monday.

President Donald Trump’s sons have made significant investments in military-related startups, “further entangling the United States’ interests and the Trump family’s financial fortunes in an area with immense stakes for national security,” The Post reported.

Many of these financial investments have come as Trump returned to the White House.

“The companies have collectively generated at least $3.2 billion in direct government business since the sons invested and an additional $3.1 billion in future contract options,” according to The Post. “Some have gained coveted spots on shortlists of preapproved contractors that can bid exclusively on up to nearly $200 billion in future work.”

A top priority for Trump’s second administration has been focusing on national security and “modernizing the tools of warfighting.” And the Trump sons have reportedly cashed in on this Pentagon initiative by building a portfolio focused on this spending priority.

“The Trump sons are part of investment groups that have poured money into established government contractors, such as SpaceX and Anduril, as well as lesser-known start-ups aspiring to build a new generation of nimble, tech-forward weaponry — from drones to humanoid robots that can either mow a lawn or use deadly force,” The Post reported. “Most of the firms are in the defense industry, but some focus on products not meant for the battlefield: One company is partnering with the luxury fashion label Prada to design spacesuits, and another is trying to build quantum computers.”

Before they sought Pentagon and defense contracts, neither Trump son had notable experience in the defense tech industry. They do not hold any government titles and are currently the vice presidents of the Trump Organization. The White House has denied any inappropriate conduct surrounding the sons’ investments or potential conflicts of interest.

“Trump’s sons have described their investments in patriotic terms,” according to The Post. “Eric Trump has said the U.S. ‘better be winning’ the AI race. Trump Jr. has repeatedly argued that the U.S. should be developing an industrial base that can crank out drones to meet potential threats from China.”

Political analysts reacted to the explosive new report.

“How fortunate for these two that Daddy can pardon them on the way out the door. Those around them may be less fortunate,” Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney appointed by former President Barack Obama, wrote on X.

“Trump Jr. & Eric Trump now have investments in over a dozen defense tech companies. Thanks to the nature of defense tech companies, their only real viability is if they can get gov contracts, & guess what! Turns out it is pretty easy to get gov contracts when your dad is the most corrupt president in history,” the account They Call Me Gary, a progressive political commentator, wrote on Bluesky.

Generated with measurements that NISAR’s L-band instrument gathered in August 2025, as U.S. and Indian mission teams tested the satellite’s systems, the “hummingbird” exemplifies one of the young mission’s hallmarks: intricately detailed imagery that is both informative and eye-catching.

The colors show differences in the way polarized microwave signals, which vibrate in different directions, interact with and reflect from the ice. Over Antarctica, NISAR transmits radar waves toward Earth with a horizontal polarization.

The orientation of the signals that return — either horizontal, vertical, or both — provide clues about the object or surface that reflected them.

Signals that come back with a horizontal polarization likely bounced off a more regular surface, such as smooth ice. Those signals appear magenta in the image.

Signals that return with vertical polarization may have refracted as they partially penetrated the snow and ice or scattered at different angles as they reflected off irregular surfaces, such as the faces of crevasses.

Called volume scattering, these observations are displayed in green.

The white represents areas in which magenta and green signals scatter back strongly, a possible indication that there is an equal blend of surface and volume scattering.

The same scene viewed in optical light is almost entirely white with ice and snow. Slight shadows and rippling indicate the presence of the mountaintop, and textures in the surrounding area suggest the ice is not completely smooth.

Access to data

The NISAR satellite is the first free-flying space mission to feature two radar instruments: an L-band system and an S-band system.

The systems are complementary due to their differing wavelengths. For example, the longer-wave L-band can pass through tree canopies, imaging the ground beneath. Meanwhile, depending on leaf sizes, S-band can collect observations of those canopies.

The Indian science team, based at ISRO’s Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, recently started releasing S-band data via the Bhoonidhi portal.

On July 20, the U.S. side of the mission started releasing calibrated products continuously for all L-band measurements collected since June 17. By the end of the year, the team expects to have released all data acquired earlier during science operations.

The NISAR project science team previously had two limited releases of L-band data, the first in January of about 25 sample products and a release in February of thousands of pre-calibrated products.

As with the earlier releases, data users will be able to download the latest files at the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center in Fairbanks, which hosts and distributes all NASA synthetic aperture radar data.

The NISAR mission’s science data output is vast, on the order of dozens of terabytes a day, due to the satellite’s frequent coverage of nearly all the land and ice surfaces on Earth.

It scans from within a few degrees of the South Pole in Antarctica to 77.5 degrees north latitude, above the Arctic Circle.
