What to Expect: Commercial Mission to Boost NASA’s Swift

At launch

A mission to boost the orbit of NASA’s sinking Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is targeted to launch no earlier than Tuesday, June 30, at 10:17 p.m. UTC+12 (6:17 a.m. EDT), from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

LINK, a robotic servicing spacecraft built by American startup Katalyst Space for this mission to extend Swift’s science lifetime, will launch on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket.

While there is no livestream available for launch, NASA will continue to provide written updates on the agency’s Swift blog.

After launch

After LINK reaches orbit, the Katalyst team’s first step is to acquire a signal from the spacecraft, confirming its solar panels have deployed and the power systems are working.

Then the spacecraft will go through several weeks of checkouts, a process called commissioning, where controllers on the ground turn on and test various systems to ensure everything is working.

With commissioning complete, the team can then maneuver LINK toward Swift. As it approaches, LINK will collect and send images of Swift to the ground, where teams at Katalyst and NASA will assess the planned grab points.

This rendezvous and capture will be a slow and careful process that could take about a month. Once its robotic arms are attached to Swift, LINK can begin to slowly push Swift upward.

Over the course of a few months, LINK will attempt to return Swift close to its original launch altitude. Then, LINK will detach, leaving Swift in its new orbit.

After boost

After the orbit boost, NASA can restart the observatory’s full system and telescope operations in a process like the one Swift went through after its launch in 2004. It could take a month or more to return to its full science capabilities.

These estimated timeframes may vary. Flexibility is built into the teams’ approach to allow them to pause, assess data, and adjust as needed.

Astronauts Ready for Tuesday Spacewalk to Repair Canadarm2 Robotic Arm

The Expedition 74 astronauts are ready for a spacewalk on Tuesday following the completion of spacesuit configurations and procedure reviews on Monday.

The International Space Station’s three cosmonauts kept busy throughout the day servicing Roscosmos scientific, electronics, and life support systems.

Mission managers have given the final go for NASA flight engineers Chris Williams and Jessica Meir to begin a spacewalk at 8:35 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, June 30.

Williams and Meir will work in the vacuum of space for about six hours and 40 minutes and replace a malfunctioning wrist joint on the Canadarm2 robotic arm that was installed on the orbital outpost on April 26, 2001.

This will be the duo’s second spacewalk together. NASA+ will begin its live coverage at 7 a.m. EDT on June 30.

Williams and Meir spent Monday organizing spacewalking tools and checking spacesuits inside the Quest airlock where they will exit the space station for the robotics maintenance job.

Flight engineers Jack Hathaway of NASA and Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) assisted the upcoming spacewalkers with the tool work and studied the delicate maneuvers they will use to position the Canadarm2 for its repair job.

Hathaway and Adenot will monitor the spacewalkers on Tuesday, help them in and out of their suits, and carefully maneuver Canadarm2 into position for repair access.

All four astronauts gathered together at the end of Monday’s shift for a final procedures review and a readiness conference with specialists on the ground.

In the Roscosmos segment of the orbiting laboratory, station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov swapped out electronics gear then photographed windows inside the Zvezda and Poisk modules for analysis.

The two-time station resident also joined the astronauts for a portion of their spacewalk procedure reviews.

Flight engineer Sergei Mikaev kicked off his shift charging batteries and checking cable connections.

Afterward, Mikaev tested the activation of atmospheric purification valves, checked the condition of lights in the Zarya module, and filled out a questionnaire documenting his experience with international crews and flight controllers from around the world.

Flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev replaced a computer hard drive inside scientific hardware that measures the radiation environment the space station experiences while orbiting Earth.

Next, Fedyaev wrapped up his shift with orbital plumbing in the Nauka science module and ventilation system maintenance in the Zvezda service module.

NASA OIG Response To Congress On GSFC Closures and Layoffs

Keith’s note: On 21 November Rep. Lofgren (D-CA), ranking minority member on the House Science Committee, sent a letter requesting that the NASA OIG look into cancellations and closures at NASA Goddard.

NASA OIG has now responded with a short report and Lofgren has commented on that report. Quotes and original letters below.

Lofgren’s 29 June 2026 response to the NASA OIG review: “This 4-page memo says little and has done nothing to assuage my concerns.

I am committed to continuing the necessary oversight, and asking the hard questions that need to be answered, to ensure that Goddard can continue to serve as the world’s preeminent center for scientific achievement in space.”

NASA OIG response: “During our limited review, we did not identify any laws, regulations, or Agency policies that prohibited the accelerated relocations and closures at Goddard.

As it pertains to actions taken during the lapse in appropriations, Center management followed an Agency-developed process to receive approvals for select staff to be excepted from furlough status for relocation activities.

Additionally, the Center did not issue any new contracts or task orders during the government shutdown for the moves, and all physical moves were within the scope of existing contracts.”

Original Lofgren letter: “We write to request that your office initiate a formal audit of NASA’s management of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Specifically, we request that your office evaluate the agency’s recent actions regarding the relocation and closure of buildings, laboratories, facilities, equipment, and personnel at Goddard, including (but not limited to) the main Goddard campus in Greenbelt, Maryland.

As Members of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology (“the Committee”), we are deeply concerned that the agency’s actions are degrading Goddard’s scientific and technical capabilities, and that they may be inflicting long-term damage on Goddard’s ability to carry out its responsibilities and NASA’s ability to carry out the responsibilities that have been given to it by Congress. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia, a Democrat, recently spoke to members of a synagogue in Los Angeles and claimed that transphobia is violence against humanity and divinity and an offense to the glory of God.

First, transphobia is a stupid word. People who object to the trans agenda do not fear trans people. They just don’t want it pushed on their kids in schools. They don’t want their wives and daughters to have to share intimate spaces with biological men.

Second, aren’t trans people the ones who are denying God by interfering with His creation?They are the ones who are permanently altering their bodies, which were created by God, in His image.

Warnock is a pastor. You would think he’d know better.

Warnock, a Baptist pastor, joined Rabbi Sharon Brous in a public exchange after his initial sermon,but not before he espoused his condemnation for those that oppose his views, saying “transphobia” is “violence not only against humanity but against divinity. It is an offense to the glory of God.”

Warnock later confessed he had to chasten some of those within his own church and community for their views because, “that church is as homophobic as anybody.”…

NASA’s Newest Wind Tunnel Builds on Legacy of Innovation

For more than 100 years, wind tunnels at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, have helped shape the future of flight. 

Now, two of NASA’s longest-serving facilities — the 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel and the 20-Foot Vertical Spin Tunnel — will pass the torch to the Flight Dynamics Research Facility (FDRF), the first major NASA wind tunnel built in more than 40 years. 

“The FDRF has a combination of features found in no other single facility in the world,” said Mike Fremaux, retired chief engineer for the Intelligent Flight Systems division at NASA Langley.

“It’s a high-performance vertical wind tunnel with a large test section capable of conducting all manner of tests to assess the dynamics of flight vehicles.”

When the FDRF opens later this year, it will provide enhanced versions of the capabilities offered by the two legacy facilities. The FDRF’s test section will allow researchers to drop models into a rising vertical airflow.

This will offer researchers the ability to conduct spin tests of aircraft and free-flight tests of vehicles designed to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere from space.

The FDRF will play an integral role in conducting research that supports NASA’s aeronautics, science, and space exploration missions. Like many NASA facilities, the FDRF’s story is rooted in a history of innovation.

12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel 

When the 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel began operations in 1939, aviation looked very different than it does today.

It was built for NASA’s predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to study the controllability of airplanes using free flight.

Aircraft models flew unsupported in the wind it generated, instead of being mounted to supports. Multiple operators used rudimentary remote controls to operate the models in the tunnel.

The facility that housed the tunnel boasted a unique design: a 60-foot diameter sphere. The configuration allowed the tunnel to move and adapt to the flight paths of free flying models.

“Pilots” could use hydraulic actuators, pivoting the tunnel’s test section to match the models’ movements. The spherical design made it easy for air from the facility’s fan to recirculate through the tunnel, regardless of the pitch angle of the test section.

In 1958, NASA moved the free-flight tests to another Langley tunnel.

The agency deactivated the 12-Foot’s hydraulic actuators, fixing its test section into a horizontal position, and began using it for more conventional testing, looking at how aerodynamic force affected the stability and control of strut-mounted models.

The 12-Foot supported major projects throughout its 86 years of service, from the transition from bi-planes to monoplanes between two world wars, through the development of supersonic aircraft.

The Beijing Space Computing Innovation Center was unveiled at the 2026 Global Digital Economy Conference on Monday in the capital city, marking a major step in China's efforts to advance coordinated development in the space-based computing sector.

Space computing refers to the deployment of computing systems on satellites. Equipped with radiation-resistant chips, onboard servers and storage systems, these satellites can process data directly in orbit rather than transmitting it back to Earth for analysis.

By linking multiple satellites into networks, they can collect, analyze and make decisions in real time before transmitting the most valuable results to the ground.

Space provides unique advantages for computing, including abundant solar energy, low temperatures and near-vacuum conditions that resemble a green data center in orbit.

Once deployed at scale, such networks could reduce dependence on terrestrial fiber and ground stations, enabling near-global coverage.

China has already begun early-stage deployment. In May last year, a Long March-2D rocket launched 12 satellites from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, forming the world's first space computing satellite constellation.

Wide applications

Potential applications for space computing span multiple sectors.

In disaster monitoring, satellites could rapidly detect wildfires, flooding and earthquake damage, improving emergency response times. In agriculture, they could enable real-time tracking of crop growth, identify pests and diseases, and evaluate drought conditions.

In remote environments such as oceans and polar regions, space computing systems could help identify illegal fishing activity and analyze ice dynamics.

Air Force Reserve, French Air and Space Force turn partnership into readiness during RAPP engagement

For the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the French Air and Space Force, interoperability isn't a talking point. It's the difference between two allied forces showing up for an engagement and two allied forces ready to operate together when the mission demands it.

That readiness drove a Reserve Allies and Partners Program engagement held June 23-25 in the National Capital Region and at Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station, Pennsylvania.

The three-day event brought together Air Force Reserve Command leaders, and a French Air and Space Force delegation led by Lt. Gen. Dominique Tardif, vice chief of the French Air and Space Force, for key leader discussions, airlift training, aeromedical evacuation integration and military-to-military exchanges.

Lt. Gen. John Healy, chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of Air Force Reserve Command, said the engagement was deliberately built around practical training rather than ceremony.

"This is all about interoperability between our two forces," Healy said. "By that crew in the A400M knowing how we fly the C-17, getting in the simulators with us, and flying in formation, it's a force multiplier."

The engagement was part of RAPP, the Air Force Reserve's framework for strengthening relationships, interoperability and shared understanding with allied and partner reserve forces.

RAPP is built around four lines of effort: key leader engagements, military-to-military exchanges, subject matter expert exchanges and professional development.

"The whole point behind the Reserve Allies and Partners Program is to ensure that we have dedicated ties to different countries so that we're able to not count on the chance exercise, but deliberately planned exercises," Healy said.

"This was a deliberate event with specific training objectives," Healy said. "On today's flight, we conducted copilot training, airdrop training and aeromedical evacuation training. These are deliberately planned events designed to build interoperability between our forces."

The week opened June 23 with an office call between Healy and the French delegation at the Pentagon. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the two forces, building on bilateral Terms of Reference signed during a previous RAPP engagement in Paris.

The next day, the engagement connected military cooperation to the long-standing alliance between the U.S. and France.

On June 24, leaders from the Air Force and the French delegation attended an airshow practice demonstration by the Patrouille de France at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

Flying the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet, the French demonstration team honored the United States 250th birthday and the deep history shared by the two nations.

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele on Sunday registered his pre-candidacy for the 2027 presidential elections — seeking to obtain a third consecutive termafter lawmakers from his New Ideas (NI) party eliminated term limits last year.

“We’re ready,” Xavier Zablah Bukele, President Bukele’s cousin and head of the NI party wrote on social media.He accompanied the text with a photo of the pre-candidacy applications of President Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa. “Pre-candidacy” is a candidate status in much of Latin America prior to the official nomination of a candidate by a party or the official campaign period.

For over a century, and until recently, El Salvador’s constitution contained clauses that either forbade a president from being reelected or forbade a president from serving in consecutive terms, requiring a period of absence from the office to run again.

When Bukele was first elected president in 2019, the Salvadoran constitution explicitly forbade a president from being immediately reelected. The constitution contained provisions to strip Salvadorans of their citizen rights should they attempt to “subscribe acts, proclamations or adhesions to promote or support the reelection or continuation of the President of the Republic, or use direct means to that end.”

The Salvadoran top court — whose top justice pro-Bukele lawmakers in Congress replaced in 2021 —issued a controversial interpretation of the nation’s constitution that allowed Bukele to run again for president in 2024 by means of a legal loophole that saw Bukele resign from the presidency on November 30, 2024 — exactly six months before the end of his 2019-2024 term.

President Bukele was freely but controversially reelected by an overwhelming majority of the Salvadoran electorate in 2024 —a victory largely attributed to Bukele’s nationwide crackdown on El Salvador’s deadly gangs such as MS-13 and 18th Street. The crackdown on the deadly gangs has contributed to Bukele’s high approval ratings among the nation’s citizens, measured at 87.8 percent as of last week according to local outlets.==

Bukele carried out thecrackdown through exceptional powers granted to the executive by a “state of emergency” decree originally approved in March 2022 and that has been continuously renewed through time on a monthly basis. At press time, the state of emergency decree has been renewed every month for the past 52 months, with Salvadoran lawmakers approving the most recent renewal last week.

The Salvadoran president’s path to a potential third term was cleared by the Salvadoran Congress’ overwhelming New Ideas majority last year through constitutional reforms eliminating the presidential term limits and extending the duration of presidential terms from five to six years — effectively allowing Bukele to repeatedly run for president.

As part of a transitory measure, Bukele’s current term, which was slated to conclude in 2029, was changed to prematurely end on 2027. This move allowed for the presidential election to align with municipal and legislative ones. As a result, El Salvador is scheduled to hold its next general elections on February 28, 2027.

President Bukele has not publicly commented on his pre-candidacy registration at press time. Over the past several days, the Salvadoran president has focused his social media content on publishing footage and updates on the life-saving actions of El Salvador’s rescue team sent to Venezuela following the dual earthquakes last week that left at least 1,450 dead and thousands injured, according to the most recent update from Venezuelan authorities.

Senior IRGC Navy officer dies in car crash as insurgencies escalate across western Iran

The political deputy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy was killed in a car accident on Monday, according to reports by both pro- and anti-government sources.

According to the reports, which appeared in IRGC-run Fars News Agency and the anti-regime London-based outlet Iran International, he was killed after his car overturned in the Kerman Province of southeastern Iran.

Police forces and emergency teams arrived at the scene of the accident, and Akbarzadeh was evacuated to a medical center, where he succumbed to his severe injuries, according to Fars.

The reports stated that authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances and causes of the accident.

It was also noted that earlier this month, Akbarzadeh was among those sanctioned by the European Union for supporting measures that restrict freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz - measures that led to the recent post-ceasefire tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran.

Originally designed for a seven-year life in orbit, the satellite has exceeded expectations, not only by its longevity, but through the extraordinary impact of its data, which have deepened our understanding of our changing planet and supported a wide range of operational services and laid the foundation for scientific discoveries.

While Sentinel-1A's remarkable journey has come to an end, the mission lives on with gusto with Sentinel-1C and Sentinel-1D – ensuring that Europe maintains an unblinking radar eye on Earth for years to come.

Launched on 3 April 2014, Sentinel-1A marked more than the start of a single mission; it heralded the beginning of Copernicus, the Earth observation component of the European Union’s space programme.

For more than a decade, Sentinel-1A served as an unwavering eye in the sky.

Equipped with an advanced C-band synthetic aperture radar, it delivered high-resolution images of Earth day and night and no matter the weather. Its ability to see through adverse weather conditions made it an indispensable tool for monitoring our dynamic planet.

From tracking Arctic sea ice and monitoring glacier movement to detecting oil spills, mapping floods and supporting disaster response efforts worldwide, the satellite became an indispensable asset for environmental monitoring and public safety, while advancing our scientific understanding of the planet at the same time.

Scientists have found a new way to make a Parkinson's drug – out of old plastic.

The plastic is polyethylene terephthalate (or PET), widely used in plastic bottles and other packaging, and now deeply embedded in the environment.

The drug is levodopa, often called the "gold standard" for managing the motor control problems that come along with Parkinson's.

"This work demonstrates how engineering biology can transform plastic-derived aromatic monomers into high-value pharmaceuticals for the treatment of neurological disease in humans," write the researchers in their published paper.

The new process isn't quite as simple as putting a plastic bottle in at one end and getting a pack of pills at the other. First, PET needs to be broken down into its constituent parts, including the terephthalic acid (TPA) that would ultimately be converted.

IDF, ISA eliminate top Hamas commander who oversaw smuggling

Troops eliminated Hamas commander Mohammad Fathi Abd al-Hay Abu Fakher on Monday, the IDF and ISA announced in a Tuesday joint statement.

Abu Fakher served as Commander of Hamas' Yibna Battalion in the terror group’s Rafah Brigade, the military said, adding that he had been recruiting and training new members in order to attack IDF troops.

Additionally, Abu Fakher had been a “central figure” in the organization’s smuggling network for around 20 years, the statement read.

Abu Fakher oversaw the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip as well as “supply of numerous capabilities required to sustain the terrorist activities of Hamas' military wing," the IDF said.

Britain’s Armed Forces will be strengthened and thousands of British jobs created through a drone transformation, announced by the Prime Minister today and backed by more than £5 billion in the Government’s Defence Investment Plan.

In a major speech at a British defence firm today (Tuesday 30 June), the Prime Minister will set out how new investment in defence will accelerate the use of drones and autonomous systems across the Armed Forces and keep the country safe for years to come, as he launches the Defence Investment Plan.

As the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine show, drones are rapidly reshaping warfare, with cheap systems destroying high value targets and innovation cycles measured in weeks, not years.

Ukraine uses roughly 200,000 drones a month to defend itself from Russia’s barbaric invasion, while at the height of the Iran conflict, 700 offensive drones were being launched per day.

The £5 billion investment will see Britain build a flexible, integrated force with attack drones flying alongside Army helicopters, RAF jets made invisible from enemy detection with new drones, and a hybrid Royal Navy made up of crewed and uncrewed vessels.

It will also fund Europe’s biggest drone testing centre, the Uncrewed Systems Centre, opened earlier this month in Swindon, and a new Uncrewed Systems Taskforce to rapidly develop and field new autonomous capabilities with industry.

This will ensure the UK can continuously scale production and get the very latest drones into the hands of our Armed Forces to protect the UK and our Allies.

The Prime Minister will today lay out other key areas of the Defence Investment Plan and how the Government will go further and faster on defence spending to protect national security, drive growth across the country and deliver opportunity.

The Defence Secretary has spent the last two weeks refocusing the DIP so that it prioritises getting the latest kit into the hands of military personnel, including for the UK’s elite Commandos.

They will be equipped with new high-speed boats and the latest drone and autonomous technology. At least six new warships will also be built for the Royal Navy, delivering the UK’s most advanced maritime air defence capability and keeping British shipyards working for decades to come.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

This game-changing investment will strengthen our Armed Forces on land, at sea and in the air, ensuring our servicemen and women have the cutting-edge capabilities they need to deter evolving threats and keep the British people safe.

The United States has been in debt almost every single day of its existence. There was exactly one exception, and it barely lasted two years.

The man behind it was Andrew Jackson, who hated debt with a fury. He called it a national curse and meant it. When he took office in 1829, the country owed more than 58 million dollars, a staggering sum at the time. Jackson set out to wipe it to zero.

He did it the hard way. He slashed spending, vetoed infrastructure projects, killed the national bank and sold off enormous tracts of federal land in the West. There was no income tax then either. It would not exist for another eighty years. Every dollar came from tariffs and land sales.

On January 1, 1835, it was done. For the first and only time in American history, the national debt stood at zero. Washington threw a celebration. Jackson called it an event that reflected luster on the Union.

Unfortunately, the land boom that helped him clear the debt turned out to be a bubble. When he tried to cool it by requiring gold and silver for federal land, credit seized up, banks collapsed and the country fell into the Panic of 1837. The government was borrowing again almost immediately.

It has never been debt-free since. Not once in nearly two hundred years.

WASHINGTON — NPR retracted a story Tuesday announcing the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

The formerly publicly funded outlet posted the story by longtime legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg moments after the Supreme Court finished its 2025-26 term, and cited a statement from the press office.

However, no such announcement was made, nor did Alito make any comment from the bench about his future.

“NPR’s reporting regarding Justice Alito is inaccurate. And their reporting that there was any kind of court statement is inaccurate,” court spokesperson Patricia McCabe told Politico in a statement.

NPR editor in chief Tommy Evans later admitted that the inaccurate report was published “[d]ue to a misunderstanding.”

“As soon as the error was realized, the story was retracted and removed from NPR’s website and an on-air correction was broadcast,” Evans added, noting that Totenberg had “reached out to Justice Alito to apologize.”

Podcast host Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, erupted in an X post: “This is why you can’t trust the Legacy Media. Published a totally fake story.”

Totenberg, 82, has worked at NPR since 1975 and has repeatedly won praise for her reporting on the inner workings of the Supreme Court. She established a decades-long friendship with the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who officiated at Totenberg’s second wedding in 2000.

Following Ginsburg’s death in 2020, Totenberg and NPR were criticized — including by the outlet’s then-public editor, Kelly McBride — for not being more forthcoming about her friendship with Ginsburg earlier.

Alito, 76, joined the high court in 2006 as an appointee of President George W. Bush, filling the vacancy caused by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

President Trump nominated three justices who were confirmed to the Supreme Court during his first term — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

If Alito retired, the 47th president would get a fourth pick, the most of any president since Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Bipartisan Effort to Strip Section 219 from the NDAA Killed Without Debate — MTG Says "MAGA Was Just a Dream"

The House Rules Committee has blocked a bipartisan amendment by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) that would have stripped Section 219 — formerly Section 224 — from the National Defense Authorization Act.

The provision creates a dedicated executive agent inside the Department of Defense whose sole mission is advancing U.S.-Israeli military technology integration, from co-producing weapons to "data fusion."

The amendment never got a floor vote. The Rules Committee killed it without debate.

According to Ben Freeman at Responsible Statecraft, Netanyahu himself has described this integration as "my plan." Former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent warned that "back doors and spyware can be installed that will most certainly be used by the Israelis to influence U.S. policy." Former CIA official Paul Pillar went further, writing that "in intelligence, Israel is more of an adversary than an ally."

Freeman's assessment of the stakes is stark:

NPR reporter Nina Totenberg reported that the Supreme Court announced on Tuesday that Alito, 76, “is retiring.”

The 29-paragraph story outlined Alito’s history on the bench, primarily focusing on his views on matters such as abortion and the death penalty. Alito authored the majority opinion in the 2022 decision that struck down Roe v. Wade, sending the matter of abortion back to the states.

Shortly after publication, NPR took the article down.

“Earlier today, we erroneously published a story saying that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was retiring,” NPR said in an editor’s note. “Neither Alito nor the court’s public information office has announced his retirement, and we have retracted the story.”

Tommy Evans, NPR’s editor-in-chief, said that what transpired stemmed from “a misunderstanding.”

President Joe Biden, a Democrat whose single term happened between Trump’s first and second terms, was able to pick one justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Judicial nominees require confirmation from the Senate, which is currently controlled 53–47 by Republicans. Only a majority vote is required.

Alito has served on the court since Jan. 31, 2006. He was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican.

Alito is the second-oldest member on the court. The oldest is Justice Clarence Thomas, who was selected by Republican President George H.W. Bush, and the third-oldest is Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was picked by Democratic President Barack Obama.

“I want to talk to y’all about what the Dr. King had to say about racism so that y’all don’t get it twisted and don’t get it confused just because you see the name sitting in this room,” she declared.She quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in writing, “Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race.”

Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., gave Alveda King the opportunity to respond.

“Congresswoman, I am a bit emotional,” King said to Crockett. “I’m going to watch what I say,but it seems as though you have suggested that I am a bastard to the King family legacy.”

“I am legitimately the daughter of Rev. Alfred Daniel Williams King and Dr. Naomi Ruth Barbara King,” she added. “We are a family who loves God, and I love you. God bless you.”

Fry wryly noted that Crockett left the room while King responded to her attack.

“Let the record reflect that the gentlelady from Texas left the room,” he said.

Judge refuses to dismiss state AGs' Meta child addiction lawsuit

Meta lost its bid to dismiss a lawsuit brought by dozens of state attorneys general accusing it of designing Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children and knowingly concealing the resulting harm from the public.

Claims rooted in deception, unfairness, and violations of the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act were all allowed to proceed after U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, based in Oakland, California, turned down Meta's motion to dismiss them late Monday, according to Reuters. On the separate question of COPPA's notice and parental consent requirements, the judge awarded summary judgment to the states after concluding the record left no dispute that Meta had failed to satisfy them.

The ruling addressed claims brought by 34 states, according to Courthouse News Service. The 102-page opinion deemed a substantial portion of the attorneys general's consumer protection theories viable, with the judge writing that the way Meta designed, built, and rolled out specific product features could reasonably be found to constitute unfair or unconscionable conduct under the relevant legal standards.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields online platforms from liability for user-generated content, did limit some of the states' claims, according to Courthouse News Service. Among the features shielded by Section 230 were infinite scroll and autoplay functions, disappearing content, notification systems designed to interrupt users, and the way the platforms quantify and surface likes. By contrast, the judge left unprotected a separate category of features — including filters that alter users' appearances, tools for capping time on the platform, and Instagram's functionality for maintaining multiple accounts — reasoning that none of them touch on how third-party content is published.

The failure-to-warn theory survived as well, with the judge pointing to unsettled and rapidly evolving case law across jurisdictions as reason to keep those claims alive rather than cut them off at the pleading stage.

Meta's response was mixed: a company spokesperson acknowledged that the opinion helpfully narrowed certain claims in line with earlier Section 230 precedent, but said the company takes issue with the ruling as a whole. "We've developed numerous tools to support parents and teens," the spokesperson said, pointing to a new Teen Accounts feature for Instagram.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement that "Meta needs to be held accountable for the very real harm it has inflicted on children here in California and across the country."

The ruling is part of a large multi-district proceeding in Oakland that consolidates hundreds of lawsuits — from individual plaintiffs, school districts, local governments, and state attorneys general — targeting Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms over their effects on minors. Meta has separately lost bids for a new trial in Los Angeles Superior Court, where a jury found the company liable for harm caused by Instagram's design to a user who alleged she developed an addiction as a minor, and a New Mexico jury returned a $375 million verdict against Meta for exposing children to sexual exploitation and concealing platform dangers from users.

Police are still investigating the cause of the man’s death, but a local official revealed bite marks had been found on his body.

The victim’s identity has not been released in line with common practice in Japan.

This tragic incident comes amid a sharp rise in bear activity across Japan.In the last three months, fatal attacks have jumped fivefold compared to last year.

Five people have been killed since April, according to the environmental industry.

These deaths follow a grim record in 2025, when 13 people were killed across the country.

Meanwhile, bear sightings have soared, with more than 50,000 reported nationwide. Experts have put this down to a spike in the animals’ population.

Asiatic black bears – once listed as an endangered species – are estimated to have tripled in number in Japan since 2012.

Experts also say poor harvests of natural food like acorns and beechnuts, coupled with Japan’s shrinking rural population are believed to be driving the animals closer to human areas.

Earlier this month, dozens of police officers were deployed to the city of Utsunomiya ==to catch a bear on the loosefor four days.

In a dramatic escalation, ==city bosses shut down all 94 primary and middle schools after what officials say was its first-ever bear sighting.

The terrifying animal was first seen on Saturday evening in a residential area near a park, before reappearing in the early hours of Monday morning.

It was reportedly seen half a kilometre from a middle school, triggering full-scale panic across the city of around half a million people.

In the Fukushima region earlier this month, a bear attacked four people at two factories and in a residential area as it avoided the hunters’ grasp.Shocking security footage showeda black bear appear and chase one of the employees close to the factory entrance.

Although the man attempted to flee, the bear quickly caught up, throwing him to the ground.The beast then smashed through a glass door to enter the compound, injuring an employee in his 60s.

From there, it attacked an 80-year-old woman after going north to a residential area.The bear then mauled a 60-year-old man at a manufacturer located approximately 500 metres northwest of Fukushima Steel Factory.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the principal dissenting opinion in Trump v. Barbara, where the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s executive order barring birthright American citizenship for the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens and temporary visa holders is a violation of the 14th Amendment.

In his dissenting opinion, Thomas writes that “both the Civil Rights Act and the Citizenship Clause guaranteed citizenship to persons born and domiciled in the United States regardless of their race.”

“Neither guaranteed citizenship to persons who were not domiciled in the United States,” Thomas writes:

Blacks were entitled to citizenship because they were Americans. They had no other homeland, owed no allegiance to any foreign power, and were subject to no other authority. They “fought and bled in the same battles,” “gained and gloried in the same victories,” and were “liable to be called upon to defend [America] in time of war” alongside every other citizen. The Citizenship Clause thus guaranteed them the “dignity and glory of American citizenship,” so as to ensure that they would never be treated as second-class under the law.

The same could not be said for the children of foreign temporary visitors. Foreign temporary visitors were attached to their home country, lacked similar bonds to this country, and would not be called upon in time of war. Americans, consistent with their settler ethos, believed that citizens were the people who called a place home. Accordingly, domicile—a person’s legal home—played a key role in both state and national citizenship in America. A person was a “citizen” of the state where he had his “domicil.” When foreigners temporarily visited, their “national character” was unchanged. Such visitors were “strangers,” not “subjects.” A person born here but domiciled in a foreign land was therefore considered “as much a stranger to the country as his father.”

In particular, Thomas argues that the 14th Amendment’s phrase “not subject to any foreign power” in regard to guaranteeing citizenship to those born in the U.S. “excluded from citizenship children of foreign temporary visitors, who were subject to the power of their home nation.”

“The Court today takes the extraordinary step of holding facially unconstitutional the President’s Order excluding from citizenship the children of foreign temporary visitors and illegal aliens,” Thomas writes:

In doing so, the Court adds to the sad history of the Fourteenth Amendment, which was designed and understood to secure equal rights for the freed blacks but has instead been repurposed for political projects that the Reconstruction Congress did not support. Because many potential applications of the President’s Order are consistent with the original public meaning of the Citizenship Clause, I respectfully dissent.

The case is Trump v. Barbara, No. 25–365 in the Supreme Court of the United States.

A Pakistani rape gang ringleader convicted of dozens of child offenses in the UK cannot be deported under British immigration law despite being stripped of his citizenship, the Oldham Chronicle newspaper has reported.

ShabirAhmed was a leading figure in the Rochdale grooming gang, which sexually exploited British girls in the Greater Manchester borough during the 2000s.

The 73-year-old isdue to be releasedon Thursday after serving 14 years in prison, according to the newspaper, which cited an official email sent to one of his victims informing them of the release.

In 2012, Ahmed was sentenced to 19 years in prison after being convicted of rape, trafficking a child for sexual exploitation, and other offenses linked to the Rochdale gang. Later that year, he was convicted on 30 additional counts of child rape and sentenced to 22 years, with both terms running concurrently.

Despite having his British citizenship revoked, Ahmed cannot be deported under current immigration laws, the Oldham

Chronicle reported, citing the official email. Instead,he will reportedly be housed in a 24-hour supervised facility and remain subject to curfews and exclusion zones.

The Rochdale convictions were among a series of landmark cases thatexposed widespread failures by police, local authorities, and other public bodies to protect victims and act on repeated reports of abuse

The gang was one of many, predominantly made up of men ofPakistani origin, that operated across 149 UK districts over several decades, according to a recent report by Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe. Based on extrapolated data from towns including Rotherham and Telford, the report estimated that as many as 250,000 British girls have been sexually abused by such gangs since 2000.

Police and local authorities often failed to intervene for fear of being accused of racism, Lowe argued.

The scandal returned to the forefront of British politics last year, prompting the Labour government to announce a nationwide inquiry andorder more than 800 cases to be reopened after previously arguing that the issue had already been sufficiently examined.

The controversy also dealt a major political blow to outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation last week.

Bensalem Police said officers, fire, EMS and hazmat teams are currently responding to the derailment between Street Road and the Neshaminy Falls train station.

Lower Southampton Police said some homes in the area are being evacuated and Bristol Road is closed between Brownsville Road and Old Lincoln Highway.

In a statement, CSX, a freight transportation company, said one of its trains derailed multiple cars at around 2 p.m. Tuesday near the crossing of East Bristol Road and Grave Avenue.

Police believe at least 5-10 train cars are off the tracks, and they are working to determine what the train was transporting.

SEPTA has suspended the West Trenton Line until further notice. SEPTA does not use the tracks where the derailment happened, but the suspension is because of the emergency response in the area.

Lead Defendant and 10 Others Plead Guilty in $65 Million Multinational Fraud Ring Targeting Thousands of Seniors

SAN DIEGO – Hua Wang pleaded guilty in federal court today, admitting his involvement in a $65 million multinational fraud and money laundering scheme targeting elderly victims across the United States, including in San Diego. Videos by YouTubers from Scammer Payback and Trilogy Media helped law enforcement identify multiple defendants and uncover the structure of the fraud conspiracy.

Wang, shown below, is the lead defendant charged in the scheme. In April 2025, Wang was arrested at his residence in Flushing, New York just days after his co-defendant, Weining Su, aka “Ning Ma,” was arrested at JFK International Airport attempting to board a one-way flight to China.

Following Wang’s arrest, in August 2025, federal agents coordinated a sweeping nationwide takedown of the investigation, including arrests in Southern California, Texas, Michigan and New York. To date, more than 30 defendants have been publicly charged in related indictments.

In addition to Wang, over the past two months, nine co-conspirators, Xiao Lei Xu, Wen Chang Wang, aka “Cookies,” Jiawen Cai, aka “Johnny Cai,” Zhuhan Yin, Wenzhi Chen, Yuhui Sun, Jiaxin Jiang, Bing Shen and Chongchong Li, have also pleaded guilty in federal court and admitted their roles in the same scheme. Other defendants are scheduled to plead guilty later this month. Defendants Wen Chang Wang, Jiawen Cai, Zhuhan Yin, Yuhui Sun, Bing Shen and Chongchong Li are Chinese nationals.

Operating since at least 2019 and rooted in Southern California, the criminal network—primarily composed of Chinese nationals, many in the U.S. illegally—worked closely with India-based scam call centers. Fraudsters who took the calls posed as technical support agents, government officials, or bank employees, according to court records. Once a victim had been defrauded, victims were instructed to withdraw bulk cash, to conceal the cash in packages, and to send cash-laden packages via express mail carriers to names and addresses provided by the conspirators. The recipient names were fictitious names corresponding with fake IDs. The recipient addresses were for the short-term rental locations.

In their respective plea agreements, each defendant admitted that to facilitate receipt of victim packages, members of the conspiracy booked short-term rentals in a hub-and-spoke pattern: a hub would be booked for approximately one week; spoke locations would be booked nearby for shorter stays. After some time, members of the conspiracy would relocate to a new location and continue the pattern.

The investigation started in December 2020 after an elderly victim contacted an express mail carrier after being defrauded into sending bulk cash in the mail. That led to the discovery of 11 total packages, containing approximately $135,000 in cash. Each of the packages was addressed to a fake name and a short-term rental in the San Diego area.

Miles Guo Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison For Leading Billion-Dollar Fraud

Attorney for the United States, Sean S. Buckley, Acting under Authority Conferred by 28 U.S.C. § 515, announced that MILES GUO, a/k/a “Ho Wan Kwok,” a/k/a “Guo Wengui,” a/k/a “Brother Seven,” a/k/a “The Principal,” a/k/a “Boss,” was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres to 30 years in prison for racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, among other charges, for leading an expansive and complex scheme to solicit more than $1 billion of investments in various entities and programs through false statements and misrepresentations to thousands of GUO’s online followers. On July 16, 2024, GUO was convicted following a seven-week jury trial.

“Miles Guo led a massive scheme to steal more than $1 billion through lies and deception from thousands of Americans and victims around the world,” said Attorney for the United States Sean S. Buckley. “After immigrating to this country, rather than being satisfied with the many legitimate opportunities afforded to him, Guo exploited the trust that thousands had placed in him for his own greed. This sentence shows that fame and wealth do not place you above the law, and that fraudsters who victimize families to enrich themselves will be met with significant consequences.”

According to the charging documents, public court filings, statements made in court, and evidence admitted at GUO’s trial:

GUO’s schemes began when he announced the founding in 2018 of purported charitable organizations—the Rule of Law Foundation and Rule of Law Society—by falsely promising potential donors that he was contributing the first $100 million to their cause. Trading on the Rule of Law groups’ purported charitable works, GUO launched an unregistered offering of stock in his media venture, GTV.

When the GTV stock offering came under scrutiny by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, GUO and his co-conspirators turned to other schemes. GUO obtained another $100 million through a program in which victims were told they could lend money to networks of GUO’s supporters and receive GTV stock in addition to interest payments. At around the same time, GUO raised at least approximately $240 million by selling memberships in G|CLUBS, a purported membership club that promised GTV stock in exchange for members’ dues and offered little to no other material benefits. In a 2021 broadcast on GTV, GUO launched the Himalaya Exchange, a purported cryptocurrency ecosystem where people could trade “H Coin” and “H Dollar,” which were phony digital assets that were fraudulently described as blockchain-native cryptocurrencies but were in fact little more than made-up figures on an internal company spreadsheet.

Whistleblower Documents Highlight Serious Safety Concerns For NIH Virus Lab In Montana

Internal documents from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) spotlight growing public alarm about safety and the labs that perform dangerous virus studies. Last month, I broke a story that exposed NIH virologist Vincent Munster, who faced an FBI investigation after he was caught bringing back deadly viruses from Africa to his NIH lab in Montana, Rocky Mountain Laboratories. New documents show Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) continues to be plagued with safety problems, and NIH executives at the Montana site have yet to fix holes in their safety plan that had been revealed back in November when a monkey bit a worker.

I was given these new NIH documents by a whistleblower who said my May exclusive on Vincent Munster "blew up inside the NIH."

"They don't have a real protocol if you're exposed to something at BSL-4," the whistleblower told me about the safety practices at RML.

Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) is the highest safety protocol in virus research. Its precautions are used when studying the world's most lethal pathogens - such as Ebola and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. The NIH has been sent copies of the whistleblower documents for comment, and I will update you with any response.

"They want to do the work at level 4 no matter the cost," said the whistleblower. "Because they think it's the most important work on the planet - that must be done, no matter what it takes."

Earlier this month the Justice Department indicted Munster and one of his lab workers, charging both researchers with two felonies. Munster's actions exposed a distressing pattern of cowboy conduct by virologists working on deadly viruses. According to the FBI's criminal complaint Munster was caught at the airport smuggling in viruses. When law enforcement asked him if he had the required paperwork, he replied that he did.

"I do this all the time," Munster told federal law officials in January. In fact, Munster did not have the required paperwork and has been charged with lying to law enforcement. And Munster's statement - "I do this all the time" - raises questions of whether smuggling viruses is in fact something he does all the time.

Alarming practices at RML

Munster works at the NIH's RML in Hamilton, Montana, where he studies maximum containment pathogens, such as Ebola. RML is one of over a dozen labs in the United States that have a BSL-4 facility. The main virology lab has been operated for many decades by Heinz Feldmann, a leading expert on viruses studied under BSL-4 conditions.

Yet emails released by Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, raise concerns that practices at RML under Feldmann have long been sloppy. An email chain dating to 2011 finds several virologists - Munster, Feldmann and researchers with EcoHealth Alliance - discussing the logistics of shipping virus samples from Africa to the States. In the final email, EcoHealth Alliance's Jon Epstein suggests to Feldman and Munster that Munster can hand carry virus samples on a plane after they are put in a viral transport and recovery (VTR) buffer, which keeps them alive.

"I think you can take up to 2kg with you on commercial flights," emailed EcoHealth Alliance's Jon Epstein.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is ending emergency declarations for COVID-19 vaccines, treatments, and medical devices, after determining that the circumstances that resulted in the declarations are no longer in place.

The health secretary in office in early 2020 issued emergency declarations, providing liability protections for companies that made products for COVID-19 and enabling regulators to issue emergency authorizations, which have a lower evidentiary threshold than regular approval.

The declarations were extended multiple times, most recently in 2024 by then-Health Secretary Xavier Becerra through the end of 2029.

They provided broad immunity to manufacturers of the products, as well as people who administered them to others.

Becerra said in the latest extension that while the COVID-19 public health emergency expired in May 2023, COVID-19 “continues to present a credible risk of a future public health emergency” and that keeping the protections in place was necessary to keep the United States prepared for that threat.

Kennedy disagreed, writing in a notice of termination that “circumstances no longer exist to justify emergency use of drugs and biological products during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He cited how regulators in 2025 revoked emergency authorization for COVID-19 vaccines, transitioning to typical approval for all the shots across all available ages.

“Americans deserve a regulatory system that is transparent, accountable, and rooted in the rule of law,” Kennedy said in a statement.

“By ending these COVID-19 emergency use authorization declarations, we’re reinforcing public confidence that emergency authorities are temporary and targeted.”

To terminate emergency declarations, a health secretary has to provide advance notice that would give a reasonable amount of time to companies to withdraw the products that have been generated under the declarations.

The Canadian dollar is starting to feel the effects of long-term uncertainty. It will get worse.

Now, this is where you really need to pay attention to details. Remember, the U.K and EU have a vested interest in protecting Canada from economic collapse.

President Trump doesn’t want immediate collapse either -because Xi will move in fast- but Trump isnot going to providethe same financial and economic lifelines that the other four-eyes will trigger.

Reuters is reporting that tomorrow the U.S. will formally declare a “non-extension” of the USMCA trade agreement {ARTICLE} and that triggers a 10-year period to decoupling. It is very important to understand there is a difference between announcing a “non-extension” and announcing a “withdrawal“. TheCanadians are completely confused about what is about to happen.

In anon-extension announcement, the USA is saying they do not want to extend or renew the terms of the agreement beyond the current trade agreement terms. Yes, this is a 10-year exit. However, that’s not the part that matters. Announcing a decision to exit the USMCA (CUSMA), a full withdrawal from the trilateral deal,triggers a six-month countdown to exit.

Thedeadline to announcethe decision to extend is tomorrow,July 1st.There is no deadline on the timeline to announce an exit or withdrawal from the USMCA. That announcement can happen at any time.

Put simply, announcing a non-renewal is a 10-year exit. Announcing a withdrawal is a 6-month exit. The announcement to withdraw can come at any time after the statement of non-renewal.

• That declaration will kick off a six-year review session, part of a “sunset clause” negotiated by President Donald Trump’s first administration. However, it will do little to alter contentious negotiations over the pact’s future, including sweeping demands to boost U.S. and regional content in North American automotive production and trade protections to block Chinese goods from benefiting from USMCA. The most likely scenario is Trump/Greer first say the USA is not renewing (not extending). Then, at a later date determined by them (in my opinion it will be after the U.S-Mexico agreement is finished), Trump and Greer will then announce the withdrawal, ==which will trigger the 6-month countdown to exit.

There is no rush to announce the withdrawal;the only immediate action is to announce a USMCA renewal is not happening.

What this scenario does is put maximum pressure on Canada. As soon as President Trump says the USA will not extend the agreement, all investment into Canada becomes extremely tenuous. The Canadian dollar will weaken further; a slow contraction will begin.

However, Canada will still be oblivious towhat comes next because their media will tell them they have a decade to work things out. They don’t.==

At a time determined by President Trump and USTR JamiesonGreer, they will announce a decision to exit the USMCA which then triggers a 6-month phasebefore the agreement is terminated.

This is where Canada will be caught off guard and theeconomic collapse will likely be rapid and catastrophic.

Canada will only just begin to think about the “exit” scenario, once the non-renewal announcement is made.It will take them a while to realize how vulnerable they are – they are currently in full denial mode.

During this period, President Trump carries massive leverage against Canada. He will likely probe their trade position and willingness to comply with reciprocity after the non-renewal announcement. The outcome of those probes willdetermine the timeline of his exit announcement.

During this non-renewal phase, we may even see President Trump tease the exit, then retract, then tease the exit again. Each time Trump tests the Canadian government with statements, the Canadian economy will pulsate and weaken; it will drivethe Canadian government to either extreme anger, or defeated compliance.

Timing the completion of the U.S-Mexico deal within the probes of Canada will be super interesting. At some point as the U.S. closes in on the deal with Mexico,Canada is going to realize they are naked without any agreement.

Theworst-case scenariofor Canada is President Trump announcing the USMCA exit on the same day he announces a completed bilateral deal with Mexico.

It would be the worst-case scenario for Mark Carney because the ignored voices of those few people in Canada who have been trying to warn about this would suddenly get a lot of attention.

The world is becoming increasingly divided by fertility.

One group of countries now has too few births to naturally replace its population, while another continues to see population growth driven by higher fertility rates. This demographic divide has major implications for aging populations, labor markets, immigration, and future economic growth.

This map, via Visual Capitalist's Jeff Desjardins, shows which countries are above and below the replacement fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman, using projections for 2025 from the UN World Population Prospects 2024 Revision.

While the regional patterns are striking, several countries buck the trend.
