Canadian Pilot’s Personal Items Returned to Family After UK Investigation

The personal belongings of a Canadian World War II pilot killed overseas have been returned to his family after they were discovered during a criminal investigation in the United Kingdom.

Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) said the pilot, Gilbert Frederick Brown, had been killed in a mid-air collision in 1943.

Some of his belongings were not collected from the crash site at that time, the DND said in a July 4 news release. The personal items then became part of a criminal investigation connected to the illicit excavation of World War II crash sites in the UK.

Following the investigation, officials with the UK military returned the artefacts to Canada, DND said. The Directorate of History and Heritage was able to locate some of Brown’s family, who are now living in the United States.

The family said they were still connected to the story of Brown, who they referred to as “Uncle Gil.”

“Seeing these items gave great visual impact to the fact that Uncle Gil’s life as a Canadian aviator had been sacrificed for the cause of freedom, leaving behind his young wife and three-month-old baby son,” his niece Lorel said. Continue…

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has filed a civil lawsuit against former employees, claiming they defrauded the facility of tens of millions of dollars over the past 10 years.

A statement of claim filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on July 9 is seeking $50 million in damages and an additional $1.5 million in punitive damages from former executives Dipesh Patel, Derek Lall, and Nilesh Modi. The lawsuit also names director of BH Contractors Paresh Soni and construction firms BH Contractors and GBI Construction.

The hospital claims the defendants engaged in fraudulent procurement practices and construction contracting practices between 2013 and 2024. It’s accused the former employees of awarding contracts with inflated pricing to companies that were run by the LHSC’s then-vice president of facilities management, Patel.

“The Fraudulent Scheme was a calculated, multi-year campaign of deceit and theft, deliberately engineered to misappropriate public funds for personal and unlawful gain,” the lawsuit states.

A second lawsuit filed by LHSC alleges several other employees covered up the scam. That lawsuit is seeking $10 million in damages.

LHSC accuses the defendants in the first filing of failure to declare conflicts of interest in procurement matters, circumventing procurement safeguards, and submitting fraudulent documents that included inflated invoices for work that was not performed. Continue…'

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says the economy is becoming the primary focus of Canada’s relationships in the Indo-Pacific — a shift that appears linked to Canada’s recent moves to overcome its security dispute with India.

Anand was in Japan and Malaysia this week for her first trip to the region since taking over as foreign minister in May. Her message coming out of that trip was that Canada’s foreign policy is shifting — though not abandoning — the priorities set by the previous Liberal government of former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The Department of National Defence is looking at the possibility of complementing its incoming F-35 fleet with uncrewed combat aircraft.

Unclassified documents obtained by The Canadian Press show the department is researching various options for acquiring the emerging technology.

The documents suggest that purchasing a fleet of aerial combat drones that could fly alongside fighter jets could cost as much as $16 billion and would require hundreds of staff.

That cost estimate is in the upper range. The price tag and other aspects of the emerging technology remain uncertain, and the fact that the government is researching combat drones doesn’t guarantee that Canada will buy any.

David Perry, president of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, said Canada’s allies are already headed in this direction, so at a minimum Ottawa will want to better understand how its closest military partners will use similar technology.

He said combat drones could give the air force more flexibility to contribute to allied operations and could act as a force-multiplier that would beef up the “mass” of the air force. Continue…

Federal investigators have been deployed to Vancouver International Airport after a “small engine fire” onboard a WestJet flight from the United States.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says it happened late Saturday as the plane arrived at the gate.

WestJet spokeswoman Julia Kaiser says the plane flew in from Tampa, Florida, and had a “small tailpipe fire” in one of its engines after shutting down.

She says about 50 passengers were still on board at the time and crews used the inflatable evacuation slides to get them to safety, adding that nobody was hurt.

Airport spokeswoman Chloe Reynaud says its own first responders also were on scene and the fire was put out by the aircraft’s onboard systems.

Kaiser says the plane has been taken in for maintenance, and Renaud says there are no impacts to other flights or the airport’s operations.

“YVR personnel, as well as emergency services, WestJet staff and our airport partners, worked to reunite passengers with their baggage and provide any other needed supports,” Reynaud said in a statement Sunday.

On June 30th, the Liberal government quietly signed nearly $400 million contracts with vaccine companies Pfizer and Moderna for COVID jabs, despite thousands of Canadians waiting to receive compensation for COVID shot injuries.

The contracts, published on the Government of Canada website, run from June 30, 2025, until March 31, 2026. Under the contracts, taxpayers must pay $199,907,418.00 to both companies for their COVID shots.

Notably, there have been no press releases regarding the contracts on the Government of Canada website nor from Carney’s official office.

Additionally, the contracts were signed after most Canadians provinces halted their COVID booster shot programs. At the same time, many Canadians are still waiting to receive compensation from COVID shot injuries.

Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) was launched in December 2020 after the Canadian government gave vaccine makers a shield from liability regarding COVID-19 jab-related injuries.

There has been a total of 3,317 claims received, of which only 234 have received payments. In December, the Canadian Department of Health warned that COVID shot injury payouts will exceed the $75 million budget.

The December memo is the last public update that Canadians have received regarding the cost of the program. However, private investigations have revealed that much of the funding is going in the pockets of administrators, not injured Canadians.

On Monday an explosive-laden drone sought to target vital infrastructure in northern Iraq, in an area known to host final remnants of US troops and officials. The US has long been most closely involved with Iraqi Kurdistan.

The drone carrying explosives was intercepted and brought down early Monday near Erbil International Airport in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, local officials said. A later, separate nighttime (Monday) attack targeted a key oil field in the region.

The region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism stated that the drone targeting the airport was shot down at 2:20 a.m. local time (2320 GMT on Sunday).

While no casualties or property damage resulted, and no group has taken responsibility for the incident so far, it suggests the possibility that Iran-allied Shia paramilitaries could be ready to cause havoc, following the 12-day Israel-Iran war last June, which the US also became involved in through bombing three nuclear facilities.

8 Chinese Nationals On Student Visas Charged In Computer 'Pop-Up' Scam Targeting Elders

Eight Chinese nationals on student visas in the United States have been indicted for their alleged role in a scam targeting elderly Americans through fraudulent computer pop-ups, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced on July 11.

The defendants, who came to the United States to attend college, are accused of defrauding more than 50 victims across 19 states out of more than $10 million. They were indicted by a federal grand jury in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

“These indictments highlight the relentless efforts of Homeland Security Investigations [HSI] to safeguard our elderly population from complex fraud operations,” Edward V. Owens, HSI Philadelphia special agent in charge, said in a statement.

“Schemes like these cause significant emotional and financial harm to elderly victims across the country. HSI, in partnership with the FBI, remains steadfast in our commitment to securing justice for the victims and ensuring that those responsible are held fully accountable.”

The defendants are Yankun Jiang, 24, and Hanlin Yang, 24, both of State College, Pennsylvania; Chenhao Chen, 25, Xiaoqing Tu, 24, and Dongjie Lu, 35, all three of California; Lei Bao, 22, of New York; Kuo Zhang, 31, of New Jersey; and Jiacheng Zhang, 25, of Florida.

According to the second superseding indictment, the defendants are accused of running the computer pop-up scam from August 2023 to February 2024. The pop-ups were disguised as coming from Microsoft, falsely warning victims that their computers had been hacked and displaying a phone number to call for help.

When victims called the number, they were allegedly fed various lies, for example, that their bank accounts were “not secure” and that they would need to withdraw from their savings, according to the court document.

To conceal their crimes, the defendants allegedly instructed the victims not to tell anyone what they had been told, and to tell banks that the large cash withdrawals were for purposes such as “home remodeling,” the court document states.

The defendants or “couriers” who were part of the conspiracy allegedly traveled to the victims’ homes to collect the money while impersonating a “federal agent” or “federal marshal,” according to the court document. Continue…

“Walk by Casey House on Huntley St. and you’ll see two new harm reduction dispensing machines on the east side of the building,” Casey House announced. “SASSY (safely access services and supplies for you) provides free equipment and help people access local resources; this includes [so-called] sexual health supplies, clean needles, pipes, naloxone, and other supplies for safer drug use.”

Since the vending machines were put up in 2024, local residents have said that their neighborhood has become overrun with drug addicts.

”I don’t feel safe,” local resident of 15 years Denise Barrowman, told Juno News. “You can’t go for a walk anymore… you never know what state of mind they’re in… it’s so unpredictable.”

Drug addicts have put up tents behind a formerly popular Toronto apartment building, where they spend their days loitering, harassing those passing by, and consuming drugs.

Additionally, Casey House, which receives the majority of its funding from the government, offers supervised consumption (injection) services from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. inside the facility to all people living with or at risk of HIV.

City staff have proposed a 1.83-metre-high fence, which will cost an estimated $412,000 to install, due to concerns from employees about “intimidation and harassment.” Staff say the risk is higher for those working early or late, citing damage to staff vehicles, fires near the city hall building, including in doorways, as well as human waste and an overall deterioration of the area.

A report was written by staff ahead of a July 16 council committee meeting to seek approval from city council to receive the necessary funding and begin the project. The report, which outlines the project plans, says the city will require a zoning variance to build the fence 63 centimetres taller than the 1.2 metres generally permitted.

The overdose prevention site, which provides supervised drug consumption services for individuals at risk of overdose, is funded by Island Health and is operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The site was relocated to Albert Street, which is next to city hall and its service and resource centre (SARC), in December 2022.

“This site operates as a lifeguard station for drug consumption, providing a welcoming and culturally safe environment, harm reduction supplies, sterile environments for safer drug consumption, lifeguards to witness consumption, best practices education for drug consumption, and low-barrier employment opportunities for community members,” says CMHA’s description of its Albert Street location. Much of Central Canada, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were placed under special air quality statements or warnings on Monday due to smoke from wildfires on the Prairies and northern Ontario, as Environment Canada advised residents to limit time outdoors and watch for smoke exposure symptoms.

Air quality warnings for areas including Toronto were downgraded to special statements later Monday and briefly lifted before another special statement was issued Tuesday morning over elevated pollution levels.

A heat warning has also been issued for the city that warns of daytime highs between 31 and 35 degrees lasting until Thursday.

A stretch east of Kingston is grappling with both sweltering temperatures and residual smoke, with a heat warning and air quality statement in place.

Heat warnings are also in effect north of Lake Huron, as well as for parts of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Environment Canada says residents in areas with smoke warnings or advisories should consider limiting time outside and be mindful of smoke exposure symptoms.

And it says if there is an extreme heat event occurring with poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool.

An Ontario resident tried to buy sex from what he thought was a 15-year-old. He was given a conditional discharge to help him stay in Canada

In December 2023, Akashkumar Khant, 30 (plus or minus some months), made the mistake of arranging to have sex with a 15-year-old at a Mississauga Holiday Inn for $140.

Only, when he got there, that 15-year-old turned out to be a cop. He was arrested at the hotel (with $140 in cash on hand) and subsequently ended up in court — but he won’t receive a criminal record for his actions, in part because of his immigration status.

On June 25, Khant was sentenced to a conditional discharge for committing an indecent act. For three months, he will be under house arrest — during which time he can go shopping for three hours every Sunday, attend religious services, medical appointments and travel to and from work. Twelve months of probation will follow afterward. Whether Ontario will appeal remains an open question, as the province won’t reveal its plan until after July 25.

Why such a low sentence? Part of it came down to the fact that he pleaded guilty to a lesser offence. Peel Police told the Post that they initially charged Khant with obtaining sexual services for consideration from a person under 18 years. (This would have carried a six-month minimum jail sentence for first-time offenders under the Criminal Code, but the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled this modest mandatory minimum to be unconstitutional last year.)

Khant pleaded to attempting an indecent act instead, which has a maximum penalty of two years’ jail. Crown prosecutors asked for 90 days, but they didn’t get their wish — and much of the reason why came down to the fact that the accused was not a citizen. Continue…

ANO leader Andrej Babiš has repeatedly dismissed the euro as economically dangerous and politically unwise. “I do not support it,” he said bluntly, warning that if the current coalition retained power, “they will introduce the euro.”

He argued that adopting the euro would lead to higher prices and force Czechia to take on the financial liabilities of heavily indebted eurozone members. Instead, he advocates keeping the Czech crown, following the example of wealthy non-euro EU states such as Denmark and Sweden.

Czechia committed to adopting the euro when it joined the European Union in 2004, but remains one of only three countries from that enlargement round — alongside Poland and Hungary — that have yet to join.

Other opposition parties are similarly critical. Kateřina Konečná of the far-left STAČILO! movement said, “The euro means higher prices,” citing Croatia’s experience. “I am against giving up the Czech crown, which would, among other things, give up another part of our sovereignty.” Her party has called for any future decision to be made by referendum.

Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), has successfully re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and splashed down on Tuesday, SpaceX has said.

Following the splashdown of the Crew Dragon Grace spacecraft in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, boats were quickly deployed to recover the astronauts, and a ground team conducted medical checks to assess their condition. Shukla, a group captain of the Indian Air Force, was the pilot of a four-member Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) crew, which has begun the re-acclimatization process.

The return marked the conclusion of an 18-day research mission on the ISS. The crew spent over two weeks on the ISS, carrying out more than 60 scientific experiments in areas such as agriculture, medicine, water systems, and human physiology in microgravity. Two Ontario teachers are challenging their dismissal with a human rights complaint against the school board, alleging they were fired for not supporting LGBT events.

Matt and Nicole Alexander were long-term employees of the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) when they were suspended, and later fired, in 2023, according to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF).

The couple says their troubles started in 2022 when their son, Josh, became vocal about gender identity ideology in his school.

Josh Alexander was in Grade 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School operated by the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB). He was suspended in 2022 for sharing his views that there are only two genders. The school also said that Josh organized a student walkout in protest of biological boys being allowed to use the girls’ washroom. RCCDSB alleged that Josh had been bullying students in the school. The suspension was later changed to an “exclusion,” which has the same effect but is considered non-disciplinary.

Following Josh’s suspension, Matt Alexander was suspended from his Grade 7 and 8 teaching positions in April 2023 over social media posts made about him. He did not have any public social media accounts at the time, JCCF said. The organization did not elaborate on the content of the social media posts.

Nicole Alexander was suspended a few weeks later, after she moved a pride poster taped to the front door of her kindergarten classroom in May 2023, JCCF said. The organization said that the poster was placed there without her consent and she moved it to a classroom cabinet. Continue…

Hijacking at Vancouver Airport: Suspect Arrested by Police

Police say a hijacked plane at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) led to delays and flights being diverted Tuesday afternoon.

According to Richmond RCMP, a Cessna 172— small passenger aircraft— was hijacked from the Vancouver Island area and entered near YVR airspace.

Victoria International Airport said the aircraft was operated by the Victoria Flying Club, and the incident was “safely resolved” with the individual involved arrested by the RCMP.

Online flight path data for the light aircraft shows it taking off from Victoria’s airport and landing in Vancouver at 1:43 p.m., after circling around YVR airspace several times.

In a July 15 email to The Epoch Times, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Melissa Lui said Richmond RCMP, the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team, and RCMP Air Services were immediately deployed. “Communication was established with YVR Emergency Operation Center to ensure a coordinated response focused on the safety and security of all involved.”

In a YVR air-traffic recording at about 1:26 p.m. local time, an air traffic controller alerted other aircraft, warning them to “continue looking out the window” for the small plane “in case anything starts heading towards you.” Continue…

‘Project Ghost’: Police Arrest 13 Members of ‘Organized Criminal Network’ Accused of Home Invasions

Police have arrested 13 suspects in a violent crime ring alleged to have committed over 15 break-ins and thefts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

On July 15, Peel Regional Police’s Central Robbery Bureau announced 197 charges against the suspects as part of “Project Ghost,” accusing them of stealing approximately $1.8 million worth of goods and committing multiple violent crimes.

According to police, “Project Ghost” was formed last August after police established links between various crimes scenes in the GTA.

In one incident, three individuals tried to break into a home in Brampton, Ont., and fled the scene after failing to get in. Police say the suspects then headed to another home, arriving about half an hour later and demanding the keys to a Mercedes-Benz. Despite complying with the demands, three of the individuals targeted in the robbery were stabbed, one of whom was severely wounded near his heart. All three suspects were eventually arrested for the robberies.

Another criminal incident in September of last year, where a motorist was shot and severely injured in Mississauga, resulted in the arrest of two suspects who were hit with attempted murder charges. Police linked the suspects to those who had committed the August attempted break-in and stabbing.

“The project was able to link the shooting and home invasions to the same criminal group, along with other home invasions and luxury vehicle and jewelry thefts across Peel and Halton. Evidence from seized phones and an accused’s statement connected the network to 13 additional incidents and identified the culprits involved,” police say. Continue…

Officers with Canada’s border service confiscated nearly $50 million worth of cannabis destined for the United Kingdom this summer, the largest marijuana seizure the agency has recorded since 2015.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Port of Saint John in New Brunswick intercepted a shipment of more than 6,700 kilograms of cannabis linked to organized crime operating across national boundaries, the agency said in a July 14 press release. Officers at the Saint John container examination facility are responsible for examining all “high-risk” containers and cargo arriving and leaving Canada via the port.

The drugs, worth an estimated $49.6 million, were found concealed in nearly 400 cardboard boxes inside a marine container, the border agency said. The drugs were falsely declared on the documentation provided to the CBSA and were destined for export to Scotland at the end of May.

“Illegal cannabis helps fuel transnational organized crime,” Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said in the press release. “This seizure demonstrates our continued commitment to fight it and keep our borders strong and secure.”

The amount of drugs seized in this shipment is three times greater than the total amount of cannabis confiscated by the CBSA across Canada in the previous year, the agency said.

Peel Regional Police have charged a man in connection with a death threat made last month against Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and his family.

The police were notified late last month that threats had been made against Brown as well as his wife and son, prompting the police service to provide protection to the family while the matter was under investigation.

Police arrested 29-year-old Kanwarjyot Singh Manoria of Brampton, Ont., following the July 15 execution of search warrants and the seizure of electronic devices in the city, located less than an hour north of Toronto.

Manoria has been charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton, police said in a press release.

“At this time, investigators believe the individual acted alone and is no longer an active threat to the mayor, his family or the community,” police said.

Author Jordan Peterson and his wife, Tammy, are selling their Toronto home and moving to Arizona, according to their daughter, Mikhaila Fuller. The listing for the couple's home at 68 Olive Avenue in Toronto's Seaton Village went live last week, she confirmed.

Fuller told the National Post that her parents are moving to Paradise Valley, Arizona, to be near her, her husband, who also goes by Jordan, and their children, Elizabeth and George.

Peterson, last December, announced his intent to leave Canada for good, citing censorship, high taxation, and the Liberal government, under then-prime minister Justin Trudeau.

In a two-hour, sit-down interview with his daughter, the former psychologist said life for him in his Toronto neighbourhood became untenable.

“The government in Canada at the federal level is incompetent beyond belief,” Peterson said at the time. “Welcome to moving to America, formally,” Fuller offhandedly said to her dad on The Mikhaila Peterson Podcast.

“There are decided advantages to being here,” Peterson notes, stating “the tax situation [in Canada] is out of hand.”

“The Ontario College of Psychologists is [also] very annoying, to say the least,” Peterson added, referring to his ongoing legal battle concerning “tyrannical” regulatory boards.

But Fuller states her parents are selling their Toronto home — her childhood residence — due to extensive touring and will not repurchase in the city. Fuller called the decision “bittersweet.”

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has fired several top advisers, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed on July 16.

“Secretary Kennedy has made a leadership change within the Immediate Office of the Secretary,” a spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email.

The fired aides are Heather Flick Melanson, who was the HHS chief of staff, and Hannah Anderson, who had been the department’s deputy chief of staff for policy, according to Dr. Robert Malone, a close ally of Kennedy whom the health secretary recently appointed to a federal advisory committee.

Melanson did not return a request for comment by publication time.

Anderson could not be reached.

Melanson has worked in two different presidential administrations, according to her profile on the Republican National Lawyers Association website.

Anderson was, until January, a director at the America First Policy Institute, a nonprofit that has been supportive of many of President Donald Trump’s policies, according to her LinkedIn page. She had also been an adviser to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, which is chaired by Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.).

Melanson, who is still listed in the HHS employee directory, was removed on July 16 as being listed as the HHS chief of staff on the main HHS website. Matt Buckham is now listed as the acting chief of staff.

Buckham, who is also Kennedy’s White House liaison and oversees recruiting and onboarding of political appointees across HHS, “brings valuable experience in personnel strategy and organizational management to this new role,” according to the HHS spokesperson.

The spokesperson said, “Secretary Kennedy thanks the outgoing leadership for their service and looks forward to working closely with Mr. Buckham as the Department continues advancing its mission to Make America Healthy Again.” Continue…

Shmigal, who had been Ukraine’s prime minister since early 2020, officially submitted his resignation on Wednesday, a day after Vladimir Zelensky announced his replacement and named him as the country’s next defense chief. Microsoft has used engineers in China for the maintenance of US Defense Department computer systems with little oversight from US officials, which may leave some of America's most sensitive information vulnerable to Chinese hackers, according to an investigation done by ProPublica.

According to the outlet, with Microsoft's arrangement that was established over 10 years ago, the set-up has relied on "digital escorts" who have citizenship in the US and have security clearance to oversee the work of Chinese software engineers in an effort to prevent espionage and hacking. However, ProPublica has found that the "digital escorts" lack the skills necessary to police the foreign actors.

“We’re trusting that what they’re doing isn’t malicious, but we really can’t tell,” one of the current escorts told reporters. The "digital escorts" make just over minimum wage for their work. The program has never been made public previously.

Although Microsoft said it has disclosed the details of the program with US officials, government workers have never heard of "digital escorts" being used. The program is so low-profile that the DOD's IT department did not have an easy time finding someone who could speak to the details of the arrangement.

"Literally no one seems to know anything about this, so I don’t know where to go from here,” Deven King, a spokesman for the Defense Information Systems Agency said. Continue…

A man charged with hijacking a light aircraft in British Columbia earlier this week declared himself a "messenger of Allah" sent to warn the world about climate change just one day before the hijacking, according to his social media posts.

Shaheer Cassim, 39, is now facing terrorism-related hijacking charges after allegedly seizing a small plane at Victoria International Airport and flying it to Vancouver on Tuesday.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the suspect had an "ideological motive" and threatened a flight instructor before taking control of the aircraft. NORAD scrambled F-15 fighter jets in response to the incident, which ended without injury when the plane landed safely at Vancouver International Airport.

Images of the arrest taken on YVR’s north runway show a man matching the appearance of Cassim, who is a former commercial pilot and known climate activist.

A day before the flight, Cassim posted on Facebook that he was the “messiah sent to save humanity from climate change and usher in an era of world peace.”

He also warned of “abrupt runaway global warming” that would cause human extinction in a matter of years. “The Angel Gabriel appeared before me and gave me a message from Allah,” he wrote, according to CTV News.

Cassim’s background includes work for KD Air, a small airline that operated out of Vancouver Island before it folded. He worked there from 2008 to 2010.

Former owners Lars and Diana Banke described him as a gifted pilot. “He was, I would say, a caring person,” said Lars Banke, adding that Cassim eventually left the airline after becoming “bored” and pursued medical studies.

Cassim's online activity includes a lengthy blog on Arctic climate change, featuring hundreds of technical posts dating back to 2011. His most recent entry, published on Saturday, is titled: “Will humans go extinct soon?”

He also identifies as the editor of the climate blog and claims to be an advocate for peace, science, and religious tolerance.

Cassim reportedly attended high school in Lloydminster, Alberta, and studied aviation at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. RCMP and federal investigators continue to examine possible motivations and online material related to the case.

It says that hiring such remote workers could have “legal consequences” and could also lead to “data theft and corporate espionage.”

In addition to putting Canadian companies’ data at risk, the earnings paid to the workers are used to fund the North Korean regime’s activities, including weapon development, the advisory said.

The Canadian government has imposed sanctions on North Korea in order to pressure the country to stop it from developing weapons of mass destruction and missile programs.

Nova Scotia RCMP say they are have reviewed about 5,000 videos and received 600 tips in the search for two missing children in the province that has gone on for more than two months.

Lilly Sullivan, 6, and Jack Sullivan, 4, were reported missing on May 2 from their home on Gairloch Road in Lansdowne Station, about 140 kilometres northeast of Halifax.

Police conducted searches for the children, but scaled back on May 7. Ground and air searches were resumed 10 days later, with RCMP saying they were going to focus on specific areas rather than a wider search.

RCMP said they have received more than 600 tips from the public, and forensic teams are examining items found in the searches, including a pink blanket found on Lansdowne Road.

RCMP confirmed the blanket was identified by the family as belonging to the children.

The family has reportedly said they believe the children wandered away from their home, which is in a heavily wooded area. Continue…

Toronto police have arrested and charged a man with two counts of mischief for allegedly urinating on the steps of a place of worship while shouting anti-Semitic slogans.

Police say the incident occurred the night of June 4 at an undisclosed place of worship near the intersection of Woodbine Ave. and Queen St. East in Toronto when 22-year-old Domenic Buchanan allegedly approached the location, urinated on the steps while shouting anti-Semitic phrases, and then ran away.

Buchanan was taken into police custody and charged July 12 and will make his first court appearance on Aug. 19. In addition to facing mischief charges for damage to a religious site and interfering with property, police noted that the Hate Crime Unit may apply for permission from Canada’s attorney general to pursue hate crime charges at a later date.

Buchanan’s alleged actions come amid an increase in anti-Semitic incidents across Canada, including the attempted arson of Vancouver’s Schara Tzedeck Synagogue in May 2024, a trio of gun attacks against a Toronto Jewish girls school last year, and a firebombing of Montreal’s Beth Tikvah synagogue in December of last year. The city council in Nanaimo, B.C., has rejected building a fence around the city hall parking lot, saying it would not effectively protect staff from the violence and disorder associated with a next-door supervised drug consumption site.

Although Mayor Leonard Krog originally considered the fence proposal to deal with increased levels of street disorder, violence, and drug activity on city hall property from the provincially managed Overdose Prevention Site (OPS), he joined other councillors at a July 16 city council meeting in deciding the fence would not be effective.

“I’m just not satisfied that the fence is going to provide the security and safety or make much of a difference,” Krog said at the meeting, noting he doesn’t see the fence providing the value to justify its cost.

In an interview with The Epoch Times, Krog said the city is obligated under WorkSafe BC regulations to provide a safe work site and that provincial and federal authorities should address the issue.

“It is immoral that in the 21st century, in a modern, liberal, stable democracy, that we should have these many of our fellow citizens living in the streets and literally dying in the streets, because we don’t have a system of care, whether it’s voluntary or involuntary,” Krog said.

The OPS was relocated to its Albert Street location next to city hall’s parking lot in December 2022. Ottawa’s ramped up defence-spending plans will give the economy a lift, but not enough to save it from a recession, a newly released report forecasts.

The updated analysis from Oxford Economics published Wednesday projects that Canada’s defence spending commitments will raise the country’s real gross domestic product by a tenth of a percentage point this year and next.

That would bring growth up to 0.9 percent annually this year and 0.4 percent in 2026.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans last month to reach NATO’s defence and security spending target of two percent of GDP by the end of this year. New member commitments from last month’s NATO summit will see that funding ramp up to five percent of GDP by 2035.

Oxford Economics assumes that the accelerated defence spending will be financed by a larger deficit from the federal government; the latest forecasts were prepared before Ottawa announced a plan last week to trim operations spending by 15 percent in the next three years.

The federal government is planning to publish its 2025 budget in the fall after forgoing the traditional spring fiscal update. Continue…

Parts of southeastern Canada are no longer under a heat warning today but a large stretch of the country will continue to see scorching temperatures.

Environment Canada says some parts of Ontario and Quebec, including Ottawa and Montreal, could see daytime highs near 30 C and a humidex of 35 to 40.

It says the heat warning also applies to parts of Eastern Canada, including much of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Southern areas in the Northwest Territories are also under a heat warning, and could see temperatures up to 30 C with overnight lows near 15 C.

Some areas in southern Ontario, including Windsor and Toronto, were also under a heat warning but the weather agency had lifted it as of Thursday morning.

As with any heat warning, it is recommended that people watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion and check in with vulnerable family and friends to ensure their well-being.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is standing behind his public safety minister, Gary Anandasangaree, who has acknowledged asking Canadian officials to authorize the permanent residency of a man with alleged links to a Sri Lankan terrorist organization.

The Toronto-area MP penned two letters to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)—one in 2016, and one in 2023—asking to reverse its decision to reject the immigration request of Senthuran Selvakumaran.

The agency had rejected the request on the grounds Selvakumaran had previously admitted being affiliated with the Tamil Tigers, a group that was designated as a terrorist entity by Canada in 2006. The Tamil Tigers are a militant group also known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The letters were written on Anandasangaree’s House of Commons letterhead and were sent prior to his appointment to cabinet in July 2023, although the second was penned while he was parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Justice.

A Federal Court judge rejected the Sri Lankan resident’s latest appeal, saying in a July 9 ruling that despite Anandasangaree’s letters of support, the CBSA had rightly placed national security and public safety as top priorities. The ruling noted contradictory statements made by the applicant about his involvement with the Tamil Tigers.

Anandasangaree said in a media statement earlier this week that the letters were a bid to help the husband of a constituent be reunited with his family living in Toronto, noting that it is not unusual for an MP’s office to field immigration-related requests.

Carney was asked about Anandasangaree’s involvement in the immigration case during an unrelated July 16 press conference. He told reporters the cabinet minister had been honest about endorsing the man’s immigration.

Carney is meeting with the chiefs in Gatineau, Que., on July 17 to discuss the One Canadian Economy Act, formerly known as Bill C-5, which allows the government to support the development of major projects such as pipelines, ports, and railways that are deemed of national interest.

The legislation allows projects to bypass provisions of certain laws, and aims to reduce the approval times for projects to two years. Indigenous groups have voiced concern, saying they were not properly consulted about provisions in the legislation that could weaken existing requirements related to indigenous consultation and environmental protections.

Carney’s opening remarks described the legislation as a means for Canada to develop its economy in collaboration with indigenous partners. The economic value of the various projects will be “shared with First Nations, as partners, who will help build the prosperity of your communities for generations to come,” he said.

“Being a reliable partner to indigenous peoples goes beyond upholding the duty to consult, to enabling the creation of long-term wealth and prosperity for indigenous peoples through full equity ownership,” Carney said. Does everyone need the same education? It depends.

If we’re talking about elementary school, the answer is a clear “yes.” All students must learn how to read, write, and do basic mathematics. Everyone should also have a basic understanding of core scientific concepts and know about Canadian history.

However, things are different when we get to high school. Courses are more specialized, and not every student needs to take every course. Students heading to post-secondary education, particularly those going to a university academic program, will take advanced math classes such as precalculus. On the other hand, students heading straight into the workforce will benefit more from math courses that focus on practical matters such as mortgages and interest rates.

This is why “streaming” is common at the high school level. To ensure students take the courses most relevant to their needs, schools offer different streams, typically an academic stream and an applied stream. At least, that’s how it’s been up to this point.

But in 2022, the Ontario government decreed that all school boards must end the practice of streaming in Grade 9, meaning that all high school students take the same courses in Grade 9. The announcement did not go smoothly. According to a survey by advocacy group People for Public Education, only 20 percent of Ontario principals felt that they had enough resources to adequately implement the province’s de-streaming mandate. Canada’s income gap reached a record high of 49 percentage points in the first quarter of 2025, as those with the highest incomes gained from investments, while those with the lowest incomes were affected by declining wages, according to Statistics Canada.

The income gap has increased each year in Canada following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a July 16 Statistics Canada report indicates. In the first quarter of 2021, a gap of 43.8 percentage points was recorded.

The federal agency defines the income gap as the difference in disposable income between households in the top 40 percent and the bottom 40 percent of income distribution.

“Households’ ability to maintain their economic well-being varies with macroeconomic conditions,” the report says, noting factors such as inflation, interest rates, employment rate, income, and real estate values.

Though interest rates were relatively high in 2023, the Bank of Canada had reduced its key policy rate from 5 percent in April 2024 to 2.75 percent by March of this year, which Statistics Canada noted was “in response to easing inflationary pressures.” Additionally, household interest payments declined by 4.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to that of last year, marking the first drop since 2022.

While lower-income households tend to benefit more from decreasing interest rates compared to higher-income households, they may also be more susceptible to job loss during “economic downturns,” the report says. Enduring tensions between Ottawa and Beijing stem from the Chinese Communist Party’s failure to understand that Canada’s foreign policy goal is not subservience to world powers but rather to defend its values, interests, and agency, says former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig.

Kovrig made the comments in an article in the July edition of the Institut Montaigne’s China Trends, a quarterly publication that analyzes Chinese policies based on Chinese language sources.

In the article, Kovrig examines how some Chinese analysts and diplomats interpret Ottawa’s actions, and how pro-Beijing voices argue that Canada should move closer to China in response to U.S. trade tensions–a move Kovrig says would be detrimental to Canada.

He argues that Beijing’s idea of a mutually beneficial relationship would leave Canada in a dependent trade role, supplying resources and absorbing China’s excess manufacturing capacity, while also expecting Canada to refrain from criticizing the Chinese regime or aligning with Washington against it.

“Chinese analysts and diplomats are saying that Canada, under pressure from US tariffs, should tilt toward China,” Kovrig said in a July 14 social media post, introducing his paper.

“The implicit deal: kowtow to the Chinese Communist Party in return for economic benefits, sacrifice Canadian manufacturing for agricultural exports,” he added. “It’s a devil’s bargain in which the long term costs would outweigh the benefits for Canada.”

Kovrig, a former diplomat and now a think tank scholar, was detained in China for more than 1,000 days along with fellow Canadian Michael Spavor as part of Beijing’s retaliation tactics for the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver in late 2018 due to a U.S. extradition request. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is inviting eastern provinces to join the New West Partnership, an interprovincial trade agreement to cut red tape for easier flow of goods and workers across the country.

The New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) was created in 2010 by Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, with Manitoba joining seven years later. Now, Moe wants all provinces to come onboard to establish “free and fair trade” between all Canadian provinces and territories.

Several provinces have already signed memorandums of understanding to find ways to boost Canada-wide trade and the federal government has also removed most of its interprovincial barriers, but Moe said more could be done.

“I would say that the quickest, the simplest, and the most straightforward way to achieve free and fair trade across the nation in Canada is quite simply, to expand the New West partnership to all provinces and territories across our great nation,” Moe said during a July 17 press conference in Saskatoon.

The premier also extended the invitation in a July 16 post on X, saying the agreement has been responsible for “Canada’s largest barrier-free interprovincial market” since its inception 15 years ago.

The legally binding free trade agreement comes with a “dispute settlement mechanism” that applies to all governments, businesses, workers, and investors involved, Moe said in a formal letter to other premiers, which he included in his social media post. Continue…

The July 14 “Sky Canada Project” report, commissioned by the Office of the Chief Science Advisor of Canada, sets forth recommendations aimed at improving unidentified aerial or anomalous phenomena (UAP) research and reporting, enhancing public trust, and addressing “misinformation and disinformation in the public dialogue” around UAPs.

“Reports of unusual objects or phenomena in the sky have long captivated the public, often generating mystery, amazement and considerable debate,” the report says. “UAP sightings invariably prompt questions that bridge science, media, and culture, presenting opportunities for exploration but also potential for misinterpretation.”

Chief Science Advisor Mona Nemer launched the Sky Canada Project in 2022 to study how public sightings of UAPs are managed in Canada and to recommend improvements. The project was spurred by increasing public interest in UAPs and a motivation to prevent disinformation and conspiracy theories.

“Whether satellites, drones, planes or atmospheric events, no one would deny that there is more and more activity in the skies above us,” Nemer said in the latest report.

The report indicates that transitioning from the term unidentified flying object (UFO) to UAP suggests a “broadening of scope” to include other movements such as remaining stationary in the air, falling, or floating and submerging in water, and to also include phenomena that are not material objects, such as gases and light. Ontario will spend $12.5 million to build a new hospital in Brant County in an effort to improve access to services and reduce wait times in the province, the health minister announced.

“By investing to build a brand-new Brant Community Healthcare System hospital, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class care in their community, for generations to come,” Health Minister Sylvia Jones said in a July 17 press release.

The province says the new hospital will include increased patient capacity, access to core programs, emergency services, intensive care, medical imaging and other diagnostic services, and maternal, newborn, and pediatric services.

The hospital is also expected to include mental health and addictions services, such as a mental health emergency medicine unit and a specialized mental health outpatient clinic, as well as medical and surgical inpatient units including for stroke and rehabilitation care, and new ambulatory care programs, the province says.

The ministry of health is working with the Brant Community Healthcare System to determine the number of beds and square footage required, among other early planning tasks, the province added, noting that a construction schedule will be confirmed once further planning is complete.

The funding builds on the province’s $2.5 million of funding in 2022 toward redeveloping the Brantford General Hospital and Willett Hospital, including increasing the number of beds and health services for patients. Continue…

American lumber producers are pushing for tougher trade policies with Canada, which it accuses of timber dumping.

As the Trump administration looks to reset the global trade system, one of the longest-running international trade disputes in North America is returning to the forefront.

The United States is reconsidering how it deals with the massive imports of Canadian softwood lumber. The two continental neighbors have feuded over the forest product since the 1980s.

The root of the dispute can be traced in part to how land and the forests are owned. Canada’s vast forests are 90 percent publicly owned. Canada’s provincial governments, rather than the private market, decide which logging companies can access the resource and the price they pay for the privilege of felling trees.

In the United States, timberland is 90 percent privately owned. Landowners decide when to harvest and set their own fees.

Because of this disparity, the U.S. Lumber Coalition, an industry group, argues that Canada’s wood products, which receive government subsidies, are sold at an artificially low price.

The U.S. lumber industry is governed by the demand for, and the price of, the product, while Canadian timber companies can harvest as much as they want, whenever they want.

Canadian producers then dump this cheap product, the U.S. lumber industry contends, in a way that undercuts the American industry.

Since his inauguration in January, President Donald Trump has kept public pressure on the country regarding trade.

He has complained about Canada’s protectionist economic policies, has imposed new tariffs on imports of certain Canadian goods, and threatened to add more.

Historically, under the terms of the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement of 1988, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) of 1992, and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement of 2019, there are few trade barriers and tariffs between the United States and Canada. Continue…

“(C)reating our own Alberta version of supply management, maybe as a pathway to a market system and maybe just because it would stick our finger in the eye of Quebec … might be (something) we want to do a little consultation on,” said Smith.

Smith noted that Alberta’s share of the Canada-wide quotas for dairy and egg production allotted under supply management falls below its share of the population.

Her comments came after one of the attendees, Lee Eddy, a resident of Red Deer County, said earlier in the evening that pulling out of the system would be one way for Alberta to grab the attention of Laurentian power brokers. The town hall was being held as part of Smith’s Alberta Next panel, struck to consider tactics for enhancing Alberta’s sovereignty.

“If we really want to make the eastern politicians (have to) change their underwear, we should remove our supply management from the Canadian system,” said Eddy.

Quebec producers hold roughly 37 per cent of Canada’s total milk quota, with Ontario producers holding 32 per cent, according to Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada. Producers in the two provinces have exerted considerable clout over politicians, given their concentration in certain ridings.

Moreover, Budapest has repeatedly accused Kiev of trampling on the rights of the Hungarian ethnic minority in the country’s Western Transcarpathia region.

The big spectacle—billed as the “National Awards Ceremony”—is scheduled for fall 2025 and will feature none other than Prime Minister Carney himself, assuming he’s not too busy flying to a European climate summit in a private jet. Canada’s top 20 percent of income earners pay more than half of all taxes collected, making them the only income group that pays a greater share of all Canadian taxes than their share of total income.

The top 20 percent of Canadian families ranked by income pay 56.9 percent of all taxes, while their share of total income is 47.8 percent, according to a Fraser Institute study released July 17. For all other income groups, the share of total income is higher than the share of taxes paid, with the bottom 20 percent earning two and a half times more than the portion of taxes they contribute.

“Despite the common misperception that top earners don’t pay their ‘fair share’ of taxes, the reality is these households pay a disproportionately large share of the total tax bill,” said Jake Fuss, director of fiscal studies at the Fraser Institute, who co-authored the study with senior economist Nathaniel Li.

“The assertion that the top 20 per cent of earners in Canada are not paying their fair share is simply not supported by the evidence.”

The federal government has previously said that by making the wealthiest Canadians pay their “fair share,” Canada’s tax system supports “fairness” for other generations.

“Canada’s tax system can be more fair. The wealthy are currently able to benefit from tax advantages that middle class Canadians and, especially, younger Canadians are rarely able to benefit from,” Ottawa said while proposing an increase in taxes on capital gains in its 2024 budget. Continue…

Two Toronto-area doctors are facing multiple charges including forgery and identity theft after a police investigation into reports of a man impersonating a medical professional and issuing fraudulent prescriptions.

York Regional Police said the two doctors are directly connected to the case of a third man, Georges Tsakiris, who was charged with forgery and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Const. James Dickson of the York Regional Police told The Epoch Times in an email that the three men are “co-accused” in the same case.

Tsakiris was charged in February, while Dr. Andrew Kiellerman was charged on June 16, and Dr. Leonard Direnfeld was charged on June 22.

The doctors face several charges, including assault causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, drawing a document without authority, forgery, identify theft, personation with intent to gain advantage, and use of a forged document.

Police said they started investigating in December 2024 after a complaint from an individual who reported suffering “significant health problems” after treatment at a medical spa near Hollandview Trail and McMaster Avenue in Aurora.

Tsakiris is accused of impersonating a licensed medical practitioner and of prescribing medication that was “not applicable” to the complainant’s health, police said.

Iranian nuclear sites may well have been destroyed and high-profile scientists and military leaders assassinated, but the regime stands. The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has emerged from hiding to declare victory over America and Israel, despite appearing shaken and struggling to speak clearly. Like him, the regime limps on, continuing to persecute its citizens and threaten both the Iranian diaspora and the world in general. Canada should be especially vigilant.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was established in 1979 when Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran from exile in Paris to overthrow the monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In place of the old monarchy, Khomeini ushered in what he called “Islamic government”—an ill-defined concept that met with immediate opposition from clerical authorities and even Iran’s first president, Abolhassan Banisadr.

The regime has been steadily losing legitimacy and support ever since. A 2020 poll conducted by the Group for Analyzing and Measuring Attitudes in Iran (GAMAAN) suggested a dramatic rejection of regime-directed religion. Seventy-eight percent of Iranians reported believing in God, but 60 percent say that they don’t pray and 68 percent believe that “religious prescriptions should be excluded from state legislation.” Seventy-two percent of Iranians rejected compulsory veiling for women (the hijab), 56 percent do not want a religious education for their children in school, and 71 percent believe that the state should not fund religious institutions.

Islam is now the fastest-shrinking religion in Iran, and Christianity is rapidly replacing it. Attendance at Friday prayers is accordingly so small that 50,000 Iranian mosques out of a total of 75,000 have been forced to close in recent years. Continue…

Under the deal announced this week, New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay said it will deliver up to $129 million annually in export value for dairy exporters from his country.

“Canada had failed to meet its obligation to New Zealand in respect of dairy access, today’s agreement means they will now do so,” McClay said in a July 18 statement.

On the Canadian side, cabinet ministers said the deal will result in “certain minor policy changes” on how Canada administers its dairy tariff rate quotas (TRQs).

International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald said the policy changes are limited to quotas administered under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Scouts Canada says it has accepted an offer to sell a historic camp site north of Montreal that first opened more than 110 years ago.

The organization announced Thursday it has sold Tamaracouta Scout Reserve to entrepreneur Eric Desroches, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the town of Mille-Isles, Que.

The organization says the new owner will preserve over 80 percent of the land for conservation, while opening a part to the public.

The camp closed in 2019 after what Scouts Canada called years of successive financial hardship and looming costly repairs.

The president of a citizens’ group that has fought to preserve the site says there were concerns that the property would be sold to a developer and that its wilderness would be degraded.

Karine Peloffy says she’s cautiously optimistic about the sale but is looking for concrete proof that the new owner will preserve the land and maintain access for young people.

Scouts Canada described the property in 2024 as the oldest operating Scout camp in the world.

Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) has acquired 451 hectares of land in Ontario for its new Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR) project.

The project is part of the Canadian government’s bid to modernize its contribution to continental defence through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The first two sites for the project have been selected, including one transmit site and one receive site, the department announced on July 17.

DND acquired 163 hectares of vacant property in Kawartha Lakes, Ont., to be used as a permanent transmit site.

The department said it has also acquired 288 hectares of agricultural land in Clearview Township in central Ontario to use as a preliminary receive site that will deliver initial, functional capability “much sooner” than the full capacity. Initial work is expected to begin at the two sites in winter 2026.

The A-OTHR project is set to reach “initial operational capability” by the end of 2029, and will require four sites to be fully operational, including two transmit sites and two receive sites. Options for the remaining sites continue to be explored. Continue…

The man convicted in the 2005 Toronto Boxing Day murder of a 15-year-old was granted full parole in January after being assessed as having a 76 percent chance of recidivism.

Seven months after getting parole, 43-year-old Jeremiah Valentine faces one count of first-degree murder in the killing of Abdeck Kenedith Ibrahim.

The 33-year-old Ibrahim was gunned down in a downtown Montreal square around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

In 2009, Valentine pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was given a life sentence with no chance of parole for 12 years in the 2005 shootout in downtown Toronto between rival gangs that killed 15-year-old Jane Creba.

In its decision granting parole, the Parole Board of Canada says an August 2021 psychological assessment of Valentine indicated he had the highest level of risk—a 76 percent chance of recidivism over a period of five years after release.

However, the parole board says he made “observable and measurable” change in prison, adding that his release will “contribute to the protection of society.”

The number of those seeking asylum in Canada since U.S. President Donald Trump took office has fallen, according to government data.

The RCMP previously warned of the possibility of an influx of refugees from the United States following Trump’s election win in November 2024, saying it was preparing to put extra resources at borders.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) saw a total of 12,185 asylum seekers from January to April 2025, compared to 24,445 during the same period in 2024, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

RCMP intercepted 544 asylum seekers during the first three months of this year, compared to 603 during the same time last year, CBSA data shows. These numbers include individuals who have been handed over to CBSA by RCMP.

CBSA confirmed to The Epoch Times that it has processed 19,730 asylum applications as of July 13. That is 50 percent less than the 39,085 processed by the same date in 2024.

The number includes all applications, including those that were rejected.

Canadians had been warned that following Trump’s election, there could be an influx at the border, with RCMP Sergeant Charles Poirier telling Reuters that Canadian police had been preparing for months prior to the U.S. election in November 2024. Continue…

An Ontario school board has reversed its decision to suspend a parent serving on a local high school council because of remarks she made about land acknowledgments.

Catherine Kronas was suspended from her position on the Ancaster High Secondary School council after she requested her “respectful objection” to land acknowledgements be recorded at an April 9 school council meeting, according to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF).

In her reasoning for the objection, Kronas had said that having a land acknowledgment during school council meetings “undermines the democratic process and constitutes a form of compelled speech,” saying there was no existing school board policy mandating its inclusion.

“In my opinion, the sentiments implied by the land acknowledgment, are political in nature, highly controversial, and therefore divisive and inappropriate within a government institution,” she said in her remarks.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) informed Kronas soon after that it had paused her participation on the council while it reviewed allegations that she had engaged in “conduct that has caused harm.” The school board also said Kronas’ conduct was “not in compliance” with its Code of Conduct policy.

JCCF said that the board’s Human Rights Office has now informed Kronas that her statement did not breach its Code of Conduct and she is no longer suspended from the council. Continue…

A 17-year-old Spanish girl manages to clings to life after a horrific attack in which her Moroccan migrant lover allegedly set her ablaze, leaving burns across 95 percent of her body.

The unnamed teen, under the Canary Islands’ child protection system, had fled her care facility to shack up with the 20-year-old suspect in a squalid squat.

The police had been searching for her after the care center reported her missing, just days prior to the tragedy.

Identified by Spanish media as Abarrafia H., the attacker had illegally entered Spain via a rubber dinghy just weeks before, landing on Lanzarote and facing a deportation notion, which he had a month to appeal.

He’d been housed in a refugee center on Gran Canaria, but ignored his expulsion order, choosing instead to pursue a forbidden romance with the vulnerable minor.

Sources report that the pair’s illicit affair turned deadly in the early hours of Wednesday in Las Palmas’ La Isleta neighborhood.

Witnesses recount a blaze erupting in the abandoned house where the couple cohabited.

Investigators say he doused her in accelerant, ignited a paper, and hurled the inferno at her. The suspect brazenly claims that it was merely a freak accident from smoking on a mattress.

The girl, engulfed in fire, staggered into the street screaming, reportedly gasping to onlookers: “It was him. He threw a burning piece of paper at me.”

A passerby alerted emergency services around 4 a.m., as the victim lay scorched and barely conscious on the pavement.

Medics rushed her to Doctor Negrín University Hospital in critical condition, battling smoke inhalation and catastrophic burns.

Meta’s chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, said on Friday that the U.S. tech giant will not sign the EU’s new voluntary code of practice for general-purpose AI, citing legal uncertainties and measures that go beyond the scope of Europe’s main AI law.

In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Kaplan said the company will not be signing the Code of Practice for General-Purpose AI (GPAI), a set of nonbinding guidelines covering AI transparency, copyright, and security.

Designed for developers of general-purpose AI models, the code aims to help them prepare for, and comply with, the AI Act, which takes effect in stages starting Aug. 2.

“Europe is heading down the wrong path on AI,” Kaplan said. “We have carefully reviewed the European Commission’s Code of Practice for general-purpose AI models and Meta won’t be signing it. This Code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act.”

The EU’s AI Act creates one system for all EU countries, dividing AI into four risk levels: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal. High-risk systems, like those in critical infrastructure or hiring, face strict requirements, including safety checks and documentation.

It covers the regulation of large language models and foundation models built by companies such as Meta’s Llama, OpenAI’s GPT-4, Google DeepMind’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.

Companies failing to comply could face fines ranging from 7.5 million euros ($8.7 million) or 1.5 percent of turnover, to as much as 35 million euros ($38.2 million) or 7 percent of global turnover.
