Nimrod Cohen, a 19-year-old IDF soldier, was set to complete his military service and return home to Rehovot on Monday to begin civilian life. Instead, he remains captive in Gaza, kidnapped 10 months into his service, just two months after completing basic and advanced training.

“Today, he’s forced into being a career soldier with no choice,” his mother, Vicky Cohen, said with anguish. Raised with values of giving and duty like his two brothers, Nimrod joined the IDF Armored Corps with pride, eager to defend his country. “From a young age, he was in scouting groups, always wanting to contribute meaningfully,” Vicky shared.

After four months of basic training and four months of advanced training, Nimrod was stationed at the “White House,” an IDF outpost near Nirim and Nir Oz in the Gaza border area, alongside former hostage Edan Alexander. “That’s where the tanks were, where they took him,” Vicky said.

Tasked with protecting nearby communities and the nation, she feels the government has abandoned her son. “They could have brought them back long ago,” she said. “So many opportunities were sabotaged. “If they’d made the deal then, everyone would be home. The government hasn’t even held a Cabinet meeting this week. They don’t hear our cries; they’re disconnected from this disaster’s scale.”

Vicky’s voice broke as she spoke of recent videos showing hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski. “Every time I think of Evyatar’s image, I cry. They look like they’re in the Holocaust—a 2025 Holocaust.

“We can’t fathom what they’re enduring, isolated, tortured, suffering. This is our Third Temple’s destruction, enabled by a government obsessed with political survival,” she said. She urged ministers: “Find a way to bring our loved ones back. You’ve abandoned my son!”

Despite the pain, Vicky draws hope from knowing Nimrod is alive. “I talk to him constantly, saying, ‘Nimrod, don’t lose hope.’ I wrap him in love and light. He feels it—I’m sure it reaches those tunnels. He’s so connected to me; I’m his mother. I tell him how much I love him, what a wonderful, sensitive soul he is.

“I imagine the moment he comes home. That’s what gets me up each morning,” she said. Reflecting on the hostage videos, she added, “I can’t control myself seeing Evyatar and Rom.

“It’s like a film replaying in my mind—such misery, such helplessness. They’re defenseless, unheard. How much blood and how many screams until they’re returned? Bring our children back before it’s too late, before there’s no one left to save.”

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC, CPSC, or commission)is a historically-independent agency of the United States government. The CPSC seeks to promote the safety of consumer products by addressing "unreasonable risks" of injury (through coordinating recalls, evaluating products that are the subject of consumer complaints or industry reports, etc.); developing uniform safety standards (some mandatory, some through a voluntary standards process); and conducting research into product-related illness and injury.[2]

The agency was created by section 4 of the Consumer Product Safety Act in 1972.[3]The agency reports to Congress and the President; it is not part of any other department or agency in the federal government.[3] The CPSC has five commissioners, who are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate for staggered seven-year terms.[3] The commissioners set policy for the CPSC. The CPSC is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.[1]

Activities

The CPSC regulates the manufacture and sale of more than 15,000 different consumer products, from cribs to all-terrain vehicles. Products excluded from the CPSC’s jurisdiction include those specifically named by law as under the jurisdiction of other federal agencies. The CPSC fulfills its mission by banning dangerous consumer products, establishing safety requirements for other consumer products, issuing recalls of products already on the market, and researching potential hazards associated with consumer products.[5]

Recalls

The aspect of CPSC’s work that most U.S. citizens might recognize is the “recall,” formally a “corrective action” in which a company develops a “a comprehensive plan that reaches throughout the entire distribution chain to consumers who have the product” and addresses a potential or alleged failure of a product.[7] Recalls are nearly always voluntary.[8]

Rulemaking and enforcement

The CPSC makes rules about consumer productswhen it identifies a consumer product hazard that is not already addressed by an industry voluntary consensus standard, or when Congress directs it to do so. Its rules can specify basic design requirements, or they can amount to product bans. small high-powered magnets, which the CPSC attempted to ban.The CPSC is required to follow a rigorous, scientific process to develop mandatory rules.

Failing to do so can justify the revocation of a rule, as was the case in a Tenth Circuit decision vacating the CPSC’s ban on small high-powered magnets.[14]

Information gathering and sharing

The CPSC learns about unsafe products in several ways. The agency maintains a consumer hotline through which consumers may report concerns about unsafe products or injuries associated with products. Product safety concerns may also be submitted through SaferProducts.gov. The agency also operates the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). NEISS collects data on consumer product related injuries. The agency also works with and shares information with other governments, both in the U.S. (with states and public health agencies) andwith international counterparts.[17]

Budget and staff

In 1972 when the agency was created, it had abudget of $34.7 million and 786 staff members. By 2008 it had 401 employees on a budget of $43 million. After the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was passed in the same year that increased significantly, withat least 500 full-time employees with a budget of $136.4 million in ~2014.[26] Funding dropped to $127 million as of the commission’s fiscal year 2019 appropriation,[27] and it continues to have slightly more than 500 employees.[28]

Ukrainian lawmaker, ex-governor jailed in drone procurement corruption case

Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has ordered lawmaker Oleksii Kuznetsov to be held in custody for the next 60 days with the option to be released on a Hr 8 million ($192,000) bail.

Kuznetsov, representing President Volodymyr Zelensky's Servant of the People party, is suspected of taking part in a high-level corruption scheme tied to military procurement, Suspilne reported from the courtroom on Aug. 4.

Also on Aug. 4, the court jailed former Luhansk Oblast Governor Serhii Haidai for 60 days, with bail set at Hr 10 million ($240,000), in connection with the same investigation.

Kuznetsov and Haidai are among six individuals named in the ongoing probe by Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO).

The agencies on Aug. 2 revealed a scheme involving inflated state contracts for drones and electronic warfare (EW) equipment tied to state contracts signed in 2024 and 2025.

According to investigators, officials involved in the scheme allegedly received up to 30% of contract funds as kickbacks.

Kuznetsov was elected to parliament in 2019 representing Luhansk Oblast and served on the parliamentary human rights committee and the temporary commission on tariff policy.

The corruption revelations come days after Ukraine's parliament reversed course on the law limiting the independence of NABU and SAPO.

Zelensky signed a bill restoring the agencies' independence on July 31, following widespread protests and international criticism over a prior law passed on July 22 that had constrained their powers.

According to NABU, the corruption network involved a current lawmaker, a former regional governor, leaders of city and district military administrations, a National Guard commander, and a drone supplier.

Ukrainian media identified other suspects as Andrii Yurchenko, head of Luhansk's Rubizhne district, and several other officials.

Officials reportedly used a coordinated method of inflating government contracts and taking bribes in return.

The pattern was repeated with both drone and EW system procurement during 2024–2025, the investigation found.

David Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People faction in parliament, said Kuznetsov would be expelled from the faction during the investigation.

"Those guilty of corruption crimes must be punished fairly, regardless of their status or position," he said.

Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko convened an emergency Cabinet meeting following the revelations. Zelensky later dismissed Haidai from his latest role as head of the Mukachevo district administration.

During the court hearing, Haidai expressed a willingness to go to the front lines once the case is resolved, according to Suspilne. Several State Border Guard Service members reportedly offered to post sureties on his behalf.

If Haidai posts bail, he will be subject to a range of restrictions, including travel bans, surrendering his passport, and a prohibition on contacting witnesses or co-defendants.

History

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan’s head of the Office of Management & Budget, David Stockman,sought to end the authorization for the agency to move it inside the Department of Commerce.[29] The agency was given a new lease on life following agreement among U.S. senators.[30]

On November 2, 2007, The Washington Post reported that between 2002 and the date of their report,former chairman Hal Stratton and current commissioner and former acting chairman Nancy Nord had taken more than 30 trips paid for by manufacturing groups or lobbyists representing industries that are under the supervision of the agency. According to the Post, the groups paid for over $60,000 travel and related expenses during this time.[31]

Second Trump administration

On May 9, 2025, President Donald Trump dismissed three Democratic CPSC commissioners—Richard Trumka Jr., Mary T. Boyle, and Alexander Hoehn-Saric—via email. The dismissals left only two commissioners, both Republicans.The Consumer Product Safety Act stipulates that CPSC commissioners can only be removed for neglect of duty or malfeasance in office, raising legal concerns about the legitimacy of the firings.[47] Trumka Jr. responded to the dismissal with the statement, "I’ll see him in court," signaling a legal challenge to the move.[48]

The firings prompted lawsuits alleging unlawful political interference, with plaintiffs seeking reinstatement under statutory protections for independent regulatory bodies.[49] Without the dismissed commissioners, Feldman and Douglas Dziak operated the agency under a two-member quorum, which federal law allows for six months before requiring additional appointments.[47]

On July 23, 2025, the Supreme Court granted an emergency order to the Trump Adminstration in a 6-3 decision and struck down the ruling set in June 2025 by Matthew Maddox, the judge for the US District Court of the District of Maryland which ordered the restatement of Mary Boyle, Alexander Hoehn-Saric and Richard Trumka Jr. to their positions on the Commission, in which Maddox cited Humphrey’s Executor v. United States (1935) behind the reasoning for the ruling.[50][51][52]

Leadership

The commissioners of the CPSC are appointed by the U.S. president and with the consent of the U.S. Senate. As with some other U.S. federal independent agencies, commissioners are selected as members of political parties. Although the president is entitled by statute to select the chairman (with the consent of the Senate),[53] no more than three commissioners may belong to the same party.[54] Thus, the president is generally expected to consult with members of the opposite party in the Senate to select members of the commission from the opposite party. The commissioners (including the chairman) vote on selecting the vice chairman, who becomes acting chairman if the chairman’s term ends upon resignation or expiration.[55]

On 3 August, the biggest news comes from Eastern Europe.

Here, a Shahed-type drone flew directly into Lithuanian airspace and passed over the capital, marking a serious escalation in Russia’s aerial provocations against Nato’s eastern flank.

Poland’s air force is already on a nightly high alert, and now the rest of the Baltics are joining in, raising what increasingly resembles an iron Curtain in the air.

Recently, a Russian Shahed-like drone crossed into Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and flew over the outskirts of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, close enough for civilians to see and film the device in flight.

Initial fears suggested a live munition had entered Nato airspace, as Shaheds are often fitted with fragmentation, thermobaric, incendiary, or delayed-fuse warheads to cause maximum casualties and damage to civilian property.

Fortunately, upon further inspection of the video footage, the object was identified as a Gerbera decoy drone, a visually similar platform Russia uses for both reconnaissance and saturation purposes during their daily strikes on Ukrainian cities.

While unarmed, the drone crossed directly over a Nato capital, far from any logical flight path to Ukraine, making it clear that this was no accident.

Instead, it was a calculated decision to test Nato’s reaction time, radar coverage, and political tolerance for such direct aerial threats and provocations, and critically, Lithuanian forces did not intercept.

Poland, meanwhile, has entered a state of routine high alert, with Polish and Nato forces scrambling jets and raising radar systems every time Russia launches a large-scale assault on Ukraine, which happens every night and now often even during the day as well.

Nato partners, including Swedish Gripens, are now joining Poland in maintaining a high alert status during Russia’s large-scale drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, reinforcing joint readiness across the eastern flank.

Russia restores runway at occupied Donetsk Airport for kamikaze drone launches, ISW says

Russia is repairing the runway at Donetsk airport, occupied since 2015, to expand its use of attack drones launched from Russian-held territories, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on Aug. 3, citing the OSINT group Cyberboroshno.

Russia routinely uses occupied Ukrainian territory as a staging ground for attacks on areas under Ukrainian control.

Satellite imagery captured in July 2025 shows visible changes at the airport, the ISW said.

According to the OSINT group Cyberboroshno, Russia is constructing infrastructure at the site to support the deployment of Shahed-type drones, including models with jet engines, as well as Gerbera drones, which are primarily used as decoys during airstrikes.

Near the destroyed terminal, closed storage facilities are reportedly being built for the drones, along with manual control stations, unloading zones for combat payloads, false positions, air observation posts, and a reconstructed runway, the Cyberboroshno's report read.

Russian authorities have also partially removed fortifications from the runway and begun construction on adjacent parking areas, possibly in preparation for installing fuel storage tanks, the ISW said.

OSINT analysts suggested that drone launches are currently being planned from within Donetsk Oblast.

Donetsk Airport ceased operations in May 2014 following the beginning of the Russian occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

Ukrainian forces defended the airport for 242 days before withdrawing completely on Jan. 23, 2015, after Russian troops destroyed the control tower and one of the terminals. A

ccording to Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, 97 Ukrainian soldiers were killed during the battles for control of Donetsk Airport.

Since the start of the occupation, the airport has remained closed to civilian air traffic.

After a spate of high-profile and deadly attacks, the Russian military is working hard to limit the effectiveness of Ukrainian drones.

At the same time, however, Ukraine is getting tens of thousands of unmanned aerial systems from its Western partners as the war in Ukraine turns increasingly to remote means.

Drones Are Now the Main Weapon of the Ukraine War

Following Ukraine’s recent drone strikes deep inside Russia, Russian forces have devoted tremendous resources to addressing the Ukrainian drone menace.

In response to Kyiv’s attacks—notably “Operation Spiderweb” in June, which destroyed and damaged dozens of long-range Russian bomber aircraft far from the front lines—Moscow commenced a program designed to protect air bases and key aircraft close to the Russo-Ukrainian border. The Russian military is fortifying air bases, including Millerovo, Kursk Vostochny, and Hvardiiske, with hardened hangars and shelters.

According to Western intelligence reports, Russia’s fortified aircraft hangars now have dome-shaped rooftops and thick blast doors to contain explosions. Some are also covered with earth for an additional layer of protection.

“The construction of these hardened aircraft shelters provides a layer of protection to aircraft deployed to Russian airbases against future Ukrainian OWA UAS [One Way Attack Uncrewed Aerial System] strikes,” the British Ministry of Defence assessed in a recent update on the drone war in Ukraine.

Such fortifications, however, do not necessarily mean that drones will not be effective against these air bases.

The value of the drone is more in its small size and flexibility rather than in its explosive capabilities. Unmanned aerial vehicles have been deadly effective because they can be piloted with pinpoint accuracy.

Numerous videos show Ukrainian drone operators wiggling small drones into Russian tanks, armored personnel carriers, command and control centers, and even trench bunkers. Once inside, the drones can wreak havoc.

Russia is also trying other means to stop Ukraine’s drone armada, which only gets larger as time passes.

Britain Will Give Ukraine 100,000 Drones in 2025 Alone

Kyiv’s international partners have been providing the Ukrainian military and intelligence services with tens of thousands of unmanned aerial systems of all types and sizes.

The United Kingdom, for example, delivered 50,000 drones only in the last six months. This delivery was in addition to approximately 20,000 drones provided to Ukraine in the same timeframe by the UK-Latvia co-led drone coalition.

The coalition has been working closely with the industry to speed up procurement and delivery of unmanned aerial systems to the Ukrainian units on the frontlines.

Overall, the UK government has committed about $465 million (£350 million) in 2025 to deliver 100,000 unmanned aerial systems to Ukraine.

This would be a ten-fold increase from the 10,000 drones London furnished Ukraine with in 2024. The astronomical increase showcases the increased emphasis of militaries on drone warfare.

Before the full-scale invasion in Ukraine started, state and non-state actors were using drones with increased frequency and for a wider set of missions. Since the war began, however, drones have become a mainstay of modern conflict.

Aflapping-wing drone can safely perform a soft landing on a person’s hand like a Falcon. Developed by the University of Tokyo’s DRAGON Lab, this system combines human gestures with flight planning.

Flapping-wing drones are ideal for human interaction because of their low noise and flexible wings. It uses soft, flexible, flapping wings to fly, mimicking a bird‘s motion.

This design makes it much quieter and safer than traditional propeller drones, creating a more gentle and less intimidating presence

Inspired by falconry, this drone is designed for safe, close-up interactions, such as landing on a person’s outstretched arm. The team says this development marks the “first-ever” successful contact-based interaction between a flapping-wing drone and a human.

“To achieve a safe approach toward humans, we design a motion planning method that considers both physical and psychological factors of human safety such as the distance from the user, the altitude, the approach direction, and the drone’s velocity,” the researchers wrote in the study paper.

Safe flight planning

The drone is designed to maintain a safe distance of at least 0.3 meters from a person’s chest and slows down while getting closer. Moreover, it is programmed to approach the user from the front or side.

This simple detail helps maintain a sense of ease and predictability. And in terms of altitude, it stays between elbow and eye level, ensuring you can see both the drone and your hand comfortably.

Now, how do you tell this high-tech bird where to land? It’s all in the gestures.

Reportedly, the drone uses two simple hand gestures for control: bending your arm to keep your hand near your chest, which signals it to “stay” and hover, while extending your arm, which tells it to “approach” and land.

This intuitive control is made possible by a sophisticated motion capture system. Eight Optitrack Prime 13 cameras track markers placed on the user’s chest, wrist, and drone.

The drone receives precise, real-time commands from a computer via a radio link.

Interestingly, its flight planning system helps to break down the approach into four distinct zones based on the distance from the user.

Beyond 1.25 meters, it’s a straight, steady flight to the palm. The drone begins to slow down within a distance of 1.25 to 0.6 meters.

It uses a smart algorithm that adjusts its velocity based on how people perceive motion, ensuring the approach feels smooth and natural.

As it gets closer, it enters a circular path around the chest, maintaining that safe distance while gently approaching the outstretched hand.

And if the user’s hand accidentally gets too close to the chest, the drone intelligently pauses its approach. It’s all about safety and a smooth interaction.

Maintain planned path

The team conducted rigorous experiments with the tech to test its landing prowess. Interestingly, the drone maintained its planned path with incredible accuracy.

There were minor hiccups, like a slight delay in response time and a bit of speed oscillation as it constantly adjusted, but the team is already working to refine these areas.

The drone’s soft wings and precise control system allow for an incredibly gentle landing, settling onto a person’s palm without any jarring movements.
