Russia ‘no longer considers itself bound’ by nuclear treaty with US

Conditions for maintaining a “unilateral moratorium” on the deployment of intermediate-range missiles have “disappeared,” the Foreign Ministry in Moscow has said

Moscow believes that conditions for maintaining the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with the US have “disappeared” and “no longer considers itself bound” by it,according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The INF Treaty, which banned ground-launched missiles with ranges of 500–5,500km, collapsed in 2019 when Washington withdrew, citing Russian violations. Moscow has denied the claims, accusing the US itself of developing banned missiles. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the collapse of the INF will significantly erode the global security framework.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry notes the disappearance of conditions for maintaining the unilateral moratoriumon the deployment of similar weapons and is authorized tostate that Russia no longer considers itself bound by the corresponding self-imposed restrictions previously adopted,” the statement reads.

According to the ministry, the “actions of Western countries” are creating a “direct threat” to Russian security. It also noted that last year, the US deployed a Typhon missile launcher in the Philippines. The statement also referenced the Talisman Sabre exercise in Australia, where the US Army also fired Typhon.

The Typhon is a mobile ground-based launcher designed to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles (range up to 1,800km) and SM-6 multipurpose missiles (range up to 500km).

The Foreign Ministry also took notice of the Australian Army testing an American Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) for the first time in July. The PrSM is a has a maximum range beyond 500km and “is central to strengthening Australia’s land and maritime strike capability,” according to the country’s Defense Minister.

The Russian statement added further:“Decisions on specific parameters of response measures will be made by Russia’s leadership based on an interagency analysis of the scale of the deployment of Americanand other Western ground-based intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles, as well as the overall development of the situation in the field of international security and strategic stability.”

Moscow has repeatedly voiced the possibility of lifting the moratorium, for example, after the US announced plans to deploy long-range weapons in Germany in 2026. In November, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is developing intermediate- and shorter-range missiles in response to Washington’s actions. The Kremlin has not ruled out deploying the missiles in the Asia-Pacific region.

US President Donald Trump, who during his first term withdrew from the INF and the 1992 Open Skies Treaty which allowed conducting surveillance flights over each other’s territory,has suggested that he would resume negotiations on maintaining the existing restrictions on nuclear weapons with Russia.

However, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov signalled last December that Moscow would have to respond to what he called "destabilising actions" by the U.S. and NATO in the strategic sphere.

"Since the situation is developing towards the actual deployment of U.S.-made land-based medium- and short-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, the Russian Foreign Ministry notes that the conditions for maintaining a unilateral moratorium on the deployment of similar weapons have disappeared," the ministry said in its statement.

As search for mass shooting suspect enters its fourth day, authorities 'fairly confident he is in a confined area'

The search for the suspect in Friday’s mass shooting that killed four people inside the Owl Bar in Anaconda is still ongoing, as the hunt for Michael Paul Brown in area of Stumptown Road has entered its fourth day.

And, after Sunday’s developments that saw significant law enforcement presence in that area, authorities feel that while he was not apprehended at that time they are “fairly confident that he is in a confined area” within proximity to where the vehicle was located that he used to flee the scene of the shooting.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Chief Executive Bill Everett spoke with the Anaconda Leader via telephone on Monday, stating that it is still an active situation and that there are teams of law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies looking for him in the area where there were reports that he had been sighted on Sunday.

“Yesterday they believed there was a sighting of him in the area. They weren’t able to make an arrest, however they feel fairly confident that he is in a confined area,” Everett said. “Obviously the community needs to continue to be vigilant, but we do not believe there is an immediate risk to the community at this time.”

While authorities believe Brown is still within the area of Stumptown Road – which remains closed to the public – the closures of both the Garrity Mountain Wildlife Management Area and of Barker Lake and the surrounding area to the west and south of the WMA remain in effect.

Everett said that the list of agencies responding to the situation from across the state is extensive, and he thanked them all for their support.

“We’ve got them here from all over the place. It’s been amazing the cooperation we’ve been getting. All the law enforcement officers are coming together on this one,” he said. “Everyone is going full bore up there. The amount of support we’re getting is phenomenal.”

He also said that the aerial surveillance, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, that have been assisting on the search will be available “anytime they’re needed.”

“Every time they feel that aircraft could be useful, they will be here, they’ll be available anytime they want,” he said.

While authorities do not believe there is any immediate risk to the community and the town has largely reopened, there remains the question as to whether the upcoming Smeltermen’s Day Weekend events of Aug. 8-10 will proceed. Everett said no decision has been made as yet on that, saying that decision “will probably wait until Wednesday morning.”

“We’re very hopeful the situation will be resolved by then. If not, that’ll be decided Wednesday morning,” he said. “We’ll take a lot of direction from state and federal agencies as far as what’s best for our community. We want this to be over as soon as possible. The other part of it is, our community is going to have to go through a grieving period. We went through a horrible tragedy, and unfortunately since we’re up against that situation right now we can’t even go through that process.”

As to that tragedy, authorities have identified Brown, a 45-year-old Anaconda man, as the gunman who entered the Owl Bar on the morning of Friday, Aug. 1 and shot four people to death before fleeing the scene in a stolen white pickup truck that was later found in the Stumptown Road area.

The four victims who were killed in Friday’s shootings have been identified as 59-year-old Daniel Edwin Baillie, 64-year-old Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 70-year-old David Allen Leach, and 74-year-old Tony Wayne Palm. All four were residents of Anaconda.

The move follows Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard sending criminal referrals to the Department of Justice. The convening of a grand jury does not guarantee the filing of charges. Rather, it is the job of the grand jury to recommend charges if they believe sufficient evidence exists to justify a prosecution.

Gabbard, in July, stated that she had sent evidence to the DOJ related to U.S. intelligence officials allegedly politicizing intelligence connected to the Russia collusion investigation, calling the matter a "treasonous conspiracy."

ODNI, at the time, said the evidence “revealed overwhelming evidence that demonstrates how, after President Trump won the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton, President Obama and his national security cabinet members manufactured and politicized intelligence to lay the groundwork for what was essentially a years-long coup against President Trump.”

Trump Media CEO Nunes loses defamation lawsuit over Rachel Maddow show

NEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - A federal judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit by Devin Nunes, the former California congressman and now chief executive of Trump Media and Technology Group (DJT.NaE),against NBCUniversal over a comment by Rachel Maddow about his dealings with a suspected Russian agent.

U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan ruled on Friday thatno reasonable jury could find Maddow demonstrated actual malice toward Nunes in March 2021when discussing a package addressed to him from pro-Russia Ukrainian legislator Andrii Derkach on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." (no reasonable lefty jury he meant)

Nunes received the package in December 2019, when the Republican was the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Maddow told viewers thatNunes "refused to hand it over to the FBI, which is what you should do if you get something from somebody who is sanctioned by the U.S. as a Russian agent."

Nunes said Maddow knew the package was turned over promptly. She and her executive producer, who were not defendants, claimed to rely on other sources when creating the segment. NBCUniversal is a unit of Comcast (CMCSA.NaE).

In a 24-page decision, Castel said Nunes, a longtime supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, failed to show Maddow was aware of a July 2020 article in Politico saying the FBI had received the package.

The judge found no clear andconvincing evidence that Maddow had a "high degree of awareness of probable falsity," or any evidence that "defendant's admitted political biascaused defendant to act with a reckless disregard of the truth."

Nunes' lawyers and Trump Media (DJT.NaE) did not immediately respond on Monday to requests for comment. Lawyers for NBCUniversal did not immediately respond to similar requests.

The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Derkach in September 2020 for trying to interfere in that year's U.S. presidential election to help Trump, who lost to Democrat Joe Biden.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York charged Derkach in December 2022 with unrelated money laundering and sanctions violations. He remains at large.

Good question. With the moon's thin atmosphere (about 15% of Earth's) and extremely high surface albedo, we should just be using permanent mirrors to direct solar radiation toward fluid vanes and heating work fluid to drive turbines in a regenerative thermoelectric system. Though I admit I am not aware how much of an effect lunar regolith powder would have on these mirrors, or if it's feasible to keep mirrors clean on the moon once we start kicking up dust there.

We certainly do not need nuclear power to produce heat on the moon, the surface temperature in direct sunlight is about 125ºC or 260ºF. Further concentrating the direct sunlight there should make it easy to heat water into supercritical steam, no?

Massive, mysterious ‘hot blob’ beneath Eastern US is moving toward New York, puzzling scientists

UK scientists have discovered a massive “blob” of rock underneath the Appalachian mountains that’s slowly oozing its way toward New York City, per a slimy new study published in the journal Geology.

“This thermal upwelling has long been a puzzling feature of North American geology,” the study’s lead author, Tom Gernon, Professor of Earth Science at the University of Southampton, said in a statement.

Officially dubbed the Northern Appalachian Anomaly (NAA), this subterranean slimeball sits 125 feet deep underground and extends 220 miles across New England. The team reportedly discovered it using seismic tomography, a method akin to taking a giant CAT scan of the Earth.

While originally thought to have formed 180 million years ago when North America broke away from Africa, the new research suggests that it appeared 80 million years ago when the precursor landmasses to Canada and Greenland were splitting apart, LiveScience reported.

In a study published last year in the Journal Nature, the team described how this molten mantle molasses is created when hot rock sitting just outside the Earth’s core rises to fill cracks in the crust caused by land rifts.

When this material eventually cools, it sinks or “drips,” causing a ripple effect along the lower surfaces of the continents that has been called “mantle waves.”

By using a combination of direct geological observations, computer simulations and model plate tectonics and geodynamics, the team was able to replicate the formation of a hot blob 1,120 miles northeast of the Appalachians.

They found that the primordial ooze was moving southwest at a clip of 12 miles every million years.

Fortunately, we don’t need to prepare for an a-blob-alypse anytime soon.

At this rate, researchers estimate that blob-zilla will reach NYC in 10 to 15 million years, like a very slow-moving B-movie monster — it takes a while for underground movements to make a splash in the Big Apple.

“Heat at the base of a continent can weaken and remove part of its dense root, making the continent lighter and more buoyant, like a hot air balloon rising after dropping its ballast,” said Gernon “This would have caused the ancient mountains to be further uplifted over the past million years.”

After the blob departs the region, however, the Earth’s crust will settle once again and erosion will “continue to wear down the mountains, gradually lowering their elevation,” the scientist said.

This seismic syrup is perhaps also the reason why rare volcanic eruptions can help bring diamonds to the surface, per the study.

While the study was predominantly centered around the NAA, the team also focused on its twin, an anomalous hot zone situated beneath North Central Greenland.

This tectonic lava lamp, which was created during the same continental fragmentation but on the other side of the rift like a molasses-y mirror, generates heat currents at the base of the miles-thick ice sheet, influencing how the ice moves and melts today.

“Ancient heat anomalies continue to play a key role in shaping the dynamics of continental ice sheets from below,” Gernon said. “Even though the surface shows little sign of ongoing tectonics, deep below, the consequences of ancient rifting are still playing out.”
