Jack Smith’s lawyers responded to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan’s criminal referral.
On Wednesday evening House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) criminally referred former special counsel Jack Smith to the Justice Department for prosecution.
In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Chairman Jordan said Jack Smith’s testimony included “intentionally false statements designed to obstruct the Committee’s oversight.”
“All individuals have an obligation to comply with a duly authorized congressional inquiry. Mr. Smith, a former public servant, is no different,” Jordan wrote in a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday. “Yet his testimony included intentionally false statements designed to obstruct the Committee’s oversight.”
“His conduct can only be understood as an effort to thwart the Committee’s inquiry by intentionally making false statements and representations before Congress,” Jordan added, according to Fox News.
At issue is Jack Smith’s testimony to the House Judiciary Committee last December.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley last Tuesday revealed that Jack Smith spied on 44 members of Congress and actually read their text messages.
Jack Smith lied when asked if the records he requested included the contents of calls and texts.

A defiant Jack Smith pushed back on Jim Jordan on Friday.
“Mr. Smith agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee fully cognizant of the risk that President Trump’s Justice Department would try to find something in his testimony to serve as the basis for a criminal charge,” Jack Smith’s attorneys wrote in the letter obtained by Fox News.
“This risk existed not because Mr. Smith would make a false statement, but because President Trump has repeatedly ordered that Mr. Smith be prosecuted and jailed. That is not the rule of law. And it contravenes the principles that are critical to the vitality of our democracy.”
Jack Smith’s attorneys argued that the former special counsel was referring to the toll record subpoenas during the line of questioning.
“During his testimony, Mr. Smith provided truthful, responsive answers and candidly discussed his work as Special Counsel. This referral reflects a chilling eagerness to weaponize the justice system by attacking a career, nonpartisan public servant who faithfully and fearlessly performed his duties by following the facts and the law,” the lawyers wrote, according to Fox News.
“The toll record subpoenas that were the focus of those questions did not call for the content of text messages. The questions and answers preceding and following these exchanges also make clear that the focus of the questions was on the toll records subpoenas. Notably, the referral letter does not contest the truthfulness of Mr. Smith’s answers.”
Chairman Jordan blasted Jack Smith during an appearance on Fox News on Thursday morning.

Three post-colonial states emerging from the empire have become the battering rams of 21st-century imperialism: the United States, Israel and the UAE.
he British empire was undoubtedly the most successful colonial and imperial project of the last 300 years, if success means conquest and exploitation of vast swathes of the planet.
While the empire effectively ended in the two decades from 1947 to 1967, its impact on the modern world is still unfolding.
Other European former colonial powers have put their history of imperial conquest behind them, and broadly accepted their status as middle powers, but this cannot be said of Britain.
The last great catastrophes imposed by the British empire in its death throes were the partition of India in 1947 that caused 1 million deaths and the displacement of 15 million people; and the creation of Israel, supported by the major UN powers, but opposed by the Arab states whose region it was carved from, dispossessing 750,000 Palestinians in 1948.
Three post-colonial states that emerged from the British empire have had an outsized impact on 21st-century global politics: the United States, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
While these are very different governments and social systems, they have commonalities: the United States was a former slave plantation economy that evolved into an industrial powerhouse and global power; Israel was a settler economy that evolved into a tech-military superpower; and the UAE was a string of fishing villages that became the world’s top destination for the ultra rich, and latterly emerged as a regional military power.
Moreover, these regimes reproduced the racial hierarchies and colonial governance inherent in the British imperial project; the US and Israel became militarised powers that violently expanded into neighbouring and indigenous territory, and lately, the UAE has joined this club.
Another such former British colonial regime was apartheid South Africa, but thanks to the global anti-apartheid struggle, and its allies in Africa, Cuba and the Global South, apartheid came to an end.
While losing an empire, the UK has bequeathed the world the US imperial hegemony, with the largest military footprint of any empire in history; a hyper-militarist settler colony in Israel; and a Gulf dictatorship, with an apartheid-like economy, with imperial designs on East Africa.
The United States took over from the British empire after World War Two and has been almost continuously at war ever since, killing millions in its wars in Korea, Indochina, the Middle East, and interventions in Latin America.
Likewise, Israel, since its violent birth in 1948, has continuously been at war with native Palestinians whose land it usurped, as well as with all its Arab neighbours, and since 2023 has carried out a genocide.
Following independence in 1971, the UAE evolved as a global trade hub, but more recently under the rule of Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has sought to become a regional power, funding proxy groups and secessionist movements from Libya to Sudan and Somalia.

Like Israel, it now faces accusations of genocide for its arming of the paramilitary RSF, which has carried out mass atrocities against Black Sudanese ethnic groups in Darfur.
One might have hoped that having bequeathed to the world this imperial legacy of divide and rule and dispossession, the UK would seek to mitigate the impact, distancing itself from the actions of its colonial forebears, and forge a new peaceful path.

But instead, in the 21st century, the UK returned to the imperial wars of the past as a junior ally of the US empire. It has also maintained an alliance with its imperial offspring, and failed to take any remedial steps to counter the actions of Israel and the UAE.
Instead, business, military alliances and strategic interests have trumped any moral duty to break with this imperial legacy and turn over a new leaf. The excuse is usually one of pragmatic realism and profit making.
In a recent example, reported by Middle East Eye, the British government as penholder on the Sudan crisis at the UN was repeatedly urged by humanitarian experts to take action over the siege and impending assault on North Darfur's capital el-Fasher, which the paramilitary RSF – a group funded and armed by the UAE – was set to overrun.
Nathaniel Raymond, founder of Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University, said that repeated calls over 18 months were made to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to raise the alarm and put pressure on its Emirati allies to halt the assault.
Those repeated warnings were ignored, questioned or dismissed by Foreign Office officials, said Raymond. He also evidenced the links between the UAE and the RSF and urged the UK to release those findings to put pressure on the Emiratis, but UK officials told him they were under significant pressure from their allies in Abu Dhabi. Following this refusal to act, the RSF carried out a genocidal massacre of an estimated 60,000 people in October 2025, the most ferocious mass killing event this century.
Raymond said that the UK government prioritised its diplomatic, economic and security ties with the UAE above averting the genocidal slaughter of tens of thousands of civilians in Sudan.
Alongside this shameful failure in Sudan are the facts of UK complicity, diplomatic cover and arms sales to Israel throughout the genocide that has likely killed 100,000 Palestinians and over 8,000 Lebanese, with the UK government continuing to deny vast evidence of Israel’s crimes.
Addicted to empire
These are two recent, heinous examples of how the UK has placed its alliances with the rogue states that emerged from the British empire at the centre of its foreign policy, disregarding international law and its own human rights proclamations.
The third is of course its now wholly dysfunctional “special relationship” with Donald Trump's United States as it wages war on Iran, arms Israel, besieges Cuba, and openly attacks the institutions of international law.
Britain owes it to the world to turn its back on the imperial mindset and dysfunctional alliances that have unleashed such devastation half a century after the empire came to an end.
Of course, such a shift will be politically difficult and provoke a backlash from the powerful states involved, as well as from the establishment forces that supports the status quo. But millions of voters have had enough of UK complicity with war crimes and genocide, and would back this change.
This is the task of Andy Burnham's foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, but so far there is little sign the new government has any intention of breaking with business as usual, with Miliband’s opening statement apparently written by a Foreign Office version of Chat GBT.
Already, Burnham has agreed to continue giving the US access to UK air bases in Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford for its illegal war on Iran. Regardless of who is in power, the establishment’s DNA is addicted to maintaining its position in the imperial order, no matter the cost to the UK’s faded reputation on the global stage. This must change.

Three Clashes in a Week Escalate China-Philippines Sea Feud

(Bloomberg) —The Philippines and China reported their third clash in the South China Sea this week that further heightened tensions, as the US flexed its presence in disputed waters.
China Coast Guard on Friday took “control measures” on multiple Philippine vessels conducting “illegal activities” at the Scarborough Shoal, according to a statement from the force. It didn’t elaborate on the measures taken.
The Philippine Coast Guard said its Chinese counterpart used water cannons against coast guard and fisheries bureau vessels, marking the second straight day of skirmishes at Scarborough Shoal. “The Philippine Coast Guard strongly condemns the dangerous and unprofessional actions of the China Coast Guard,” it said in a statement.
On Thursday, Manila said a China Coast Guard vessel fired a water cannon at a Filipino vessel for more than two minutes at the disputed shoal.
Amid the tensions, the US ramped up its rhetoric and presence in the region, which coincided with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Manila for a summit. The US has a mutual defense treaty with the Philippines.
After meeting with Rubio, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. spoke on the phone with President Donald Trump late Thursday, and got an assurance from the US leader that Manila’s concerns will be raised at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.
Also on Friday, the US Seventh Fleet posted a photo on X of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group transiting the Luzon Strait to conduct operations in the South China Sea.
The incidents at Scarborough Shoal took place after China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro met on Wednesday, where they exchanged strong protests in their first sit-down since 2024. Wang warned in that meeting that bilateral relations are “at a crossroads, and it is up to the Philippines to make the correct and rational choice.”
Tensions were already high earlier this week after the Philippines accused China Coast Guard personnel of aggressively striking and wounding a Navy serviceman with a wooden baton at the Second Thomas Shoal.
Rubio on Thursday said that a US Coast Guard vessel supported the Philippines during the incident earlier this week, standing between the two sides and allowing the injured sailor to be retrieved.
“So we are already here. We’re already present. We have a role, and we’re not going to abandon our allies,” he said, stressing that improving the US-China relationship won’t come at the expense of allies and partners.
China took effective control of the Scarborough Shoal, which it calls Huangyan Island, and its adjacent waters after a standoff with the Philippines in 2012. Beijing has created manmade islands and put up buildings in contested waters in a bid to assert its sweeping claims over the South China Sea, which have been rejected by a ruling of an international tribunal in 2016.

Prosecutors allege she helped fraudulently obtain more than $32 million in taxpayer-funded COVID-19 relief funds before fleeing the country after failing to appear in federal court.
Escoe was indicted in 2025 on charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and multiple counts of money laundering, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.
Federal prosecutors said a judge issued an arrest warrant after Escoe failed to appear in court in May 2025.
Authorities allege she fled to Jamaica, where she was later located and arrested after the FBI received a tip.
“This Most Wanted Fraudster allegedly obtained tens of millions in COVID-19 relief, stealing critical resources from legitimate businesses during a national crisis,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told Fox News Digital.
“She fled the country believing she could escape justice but ultimately could not,” he continued. “Those who exploit taxpayer-funded programs will be held accountable by this Department of Justice, no matter how long it takes or where they attempt to hide.”
Patel called Escoe’s arrest another milestone in the FBI’s international fraud crackdown, saying she is the fourth alleged “Most Wanted Fraudster” captured in the past five weeks.
“The historic success of the ‘Most Wanted Fraudster’ list continues as the FBI and our partners just captured our fourth Most Wanted Fraudster in 5 weeks, and yet another high value target returned to the US by this FBI,” Patel said. “Elaine Angene Escoe, on the run since May 2025, was captured in Jamaica while living under a fake identity of ‘Harley Newman’ — and returned to the United States today to face justice.”

15 arrested in Shelby County human trafficking operation
Fifteen people were arrested during a human trafficking operation in north Shelby County, according to the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Investigators conducted the operation Thursday, July 23. All 15 suspects were charged with prostitution: commercialized sex and booked into the Shelby County Jail.

MIAMI – A fugitive on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters List has been returned to the Southern District of Florida to face federal charges for her alleged role in a scheme that fraudulently obtained more than $32 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.
Elaine Escoe, 41, was charged by indictment in 2025 with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and multiple substantive counts of wire fraud and money laundering. After a federal arrest warrant was issued in May 2025, Escoe failed to appear for her court appearance and fled to Jamaica. Acting on information developed by the FBI, Jamaican authorities captured Escoe after receiving a tip. She was returned to South Florida today through the coordinated efforts of the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF), and the JCF Jamaica Fugitive Apprehension Team.
“This Most Wanted Fraudster allegedly obtained tens of millions in COVID-19 relief, stealing critical resources from legitimate businesses during a national crisis,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “She fled the country believing she could escape justice but ultimately could not. Those who exploit taxpayer-funded programs will be held accountable by this Department of Justice, no matter how long it takes or where they attempt to hide.”
“Elaine Angene Escoe’s arrest and return to the United States demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of American justice,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. “This Most Wanted Fraudster faces charges stemming from a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud taxpayer-funded COVID-19 relief programs. Honduras ex-President Hernandez to return home after Trump pardon

He is expected to appear before a court on August 3 to face charges of fraud and money laundering. An arrest warrant issued against him was suspended in June, meaning he will not be detained upon arrival.

The Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the administration’s request to lift an injunction several Democratic-led states secured on June 25 from a lower-court judge who concluded that key parts of the Republican president’s order were unconstitutional.
In asking the court to pause U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani’s ruling while it pursues an appeal, the U.S. Department of Justice had argued that because government agencies had yet to finalize actions and policies to implement Trump’s directive, any lawsuit challenging his order was premature.
The appeals court, in a 2-1 ruling, rejected that argument.

A man posing as Shiloh Hendrix on X and stealing donations from well-meaning Americans has decided to expose himself to the world. Now, he may be facing some serious criminal charges.
As TGP readers may know, an X account claiming to be owned by Shiloh Hendrix emerged online late Friday, teasing that “she” would be speaking out about the unjust “disorderly conduct” verdict levied against her last week.
The “Shiloh Hendrix” account quickly racked up thousands of followers as it posted about the verdict and talked about double standards against white people.
It also posted a link to a Venmo account to help “her” set up a podcast, along with a PayPal account, in the profile before it was removedIn the afternoon, it was clear thousands had been conned. The real person behind the account came forth, revealing himself as a large black man.
He started by bursting out laughing before bragging for roughly 50 minutes about how he scammed MAGA Republicans with the fake account.He added that he used the money sent to him to cover personal expenses, including rent, gym membership, and food.
The man in the video also runs an X account called “Monzure,” which last posted back in 2015 until Saturday.
It would be one thing if the man simply used a fake account (which is all too common on X) as a “prank.” But the fact that he solicited donations while posing as someone else should open him up to criminal charges.
Many X users pointed out that the man just pleaded guilty to wire fraud, a major felony that carries up to 20 years in prison.

Simulation TNG50: A Galaxy Cluster Forms
How do clusters of galaxies form? Since our universe moves too slowly to watch, faster-moving computer simulations are created to help find out. One famous effort is TNG50 from IllustrisTNG, an upgrade of the famous Illustris Simulation. The first part of the featured video tracks cosmic gas (mostly hydrogen) as it evolves into galaxies and galaxy clusters from the early universe to today, with brighter colors marking faster moving gas. As the universe matures, gas falls into gravitational wells, galaxies forms, galaxies spin, galaxies collide and merge, all while black holes form in galaxy centers and expel surrounding gas at high speeds. The second half of the video switches to tracking stars, showing a galaxy cluster coming together, complete with stellar streams. The outflow from black holes in TNG50 is surprisingly complex and details are being compared with our real universe. Studying how gas coalesced in the early universe helps humanity better understand how our Earth, Sun, and Solar System originally formed.

The CIA, the State Department, and British Foreign Office all maintained the strike was accidental, with the real target meant to be the headquarters of a Yugoslav arms agency. They claimed that the strike was the result of compounded errors, as the embassy was not clearly marked and NATO was using obsolete maps. This was not widely considered credible by experts or officials.
The Chinese government referred to U.S. explanations of the incident as “anything but convincing.” In 2017, Kyle Mizokami summarized prevailing views in the West at the time in the National Interest: “[I]t’s difficult to imagine that the vast U.S. military and intelligence apparatus could mistake an embassy with a traditional Chinese green tiled roof for a military logistical hub.”
At NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Vincenza, Italy, an American colonel was widely cited by Western media outlets near the end of the year for admitting to the intentional strike, stating: “That was great targeting … we put two JDAMs down into the attaché’s office and took out the exact room we wanted … they won’t be using that place for rebro [re-broadcasting radio transmissions] any more.”
Discourse surrounding the attack continued to evolve throughout the remainder of 1999, with new details continuing to emerge. Writers at The Observer, in a report published six months after the attack, described an episode at joint NATO command:
In the immediate aftermath of the attack there were some among non-U.S. staff who were suspicious. On 8 May they tapped into the NATO target computer and checked out the satellite coordinates for the Chinese Embassy. The coordinates were in the computer and they were correct. While the world was being told the CIA had used out-of-date maps, NATO’s officers were looking at evidence that the CIA was bang on target.
The Observer also cited the U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency as calling the Pentagon’s official story “a damned lie.” The Observer, citing a range of sources including multiple serving officers from NATO colonels to intelligence officers and a general, concluded that the Chinese Embassy was deliberately attacked. As one intelligence officer told the paper: “If it was the wrong building, why did they [U.S.] use the most precise weapons on Earth to hit the right end of that ‘wrong building’?”
Speculated motives for the CIA operation vary. The Observer’s report concluded that “The Chinese Embassy in Belgrade was deliberately targeted … because it was being used by Zeljko Raznatovic, the indicted war criminal better known as Arkan, to transmit messages to his ‘Tigers’ – Serb death squads – in Kosovo.” That was the “rebro” factor cited by the U.S. colonel above.
Other possible motives included sending a strong signal to the Yugoslav leadership that the international community, including China as the world’s leading non-Western power, could not save it from the Western assault. Still others speculate that Chinese intelligence was using the embassy to monitor NATO cruise missile strikes under combat conditions with the view to developing countermeasures.
Western security experts the writer spoke to otherwise reported that the military attaché’s office had gathered parts from a U.S. F-117 stealth fighter shot down by Yugoslav forces 41 days prior at the embassy, with the intention of sending them to China for study. U.S. intelligence viewed it as imperative to prevent these highly sensitive technologies from reaching Chinese soil. At the time, the F-117 was the first and only stealth fighter class operational anywhere in the world, and access to the remains of its airframe could provide both support to China’s own then-ongoing stealth fighter development while also accelerating its forces’ progress in developing means to counter such aircraft.
In 2019, the BBC noted, “It’s widely assumed that China did get hold of pieces of the [F-117] plane to study its technology.”
Thus even among those who hold that the strike was intentional – which is denied by the U.S. government and NATO to this day – the motive remains disputed and can likely be attributed to a combination of multiple factors.

Firefighters are battling to contain wildfires burning near to the city of Bordeaux as tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from the surrounding region.
Speaking on Sunday, the city's Mayor, Thomas Cazenave, said the fire was about 15km (9 miles) from the outskirts of the city's wider region, and 25 to 30km (15 and 19 miles) from its centre, although downplayed the possibility of Bordeaux being evacuated.
Overnight into Sunday about 55,000 people were evacuated from villages to the south of the city in the Gironde region, famed for its vineyards.
Wildfires have raged across Europe over the past week, primarily France and Spain, where more than 330,000 people have been evacuated.
France has been worst-affected, with an area of 42,000 hectares burnt, making it one of the largest forest fires since World War Two. About 98,000 hectares have burnt across the country since the start of the year.
In total, more than 220,000 people have been evacuated in the south west of the country.
Captain Nicolas Braz, one of the leaders of the firefighting operation, said the fire had created "its own winds - complete with whirlwinds", adding it was "erratic and unmanageable".
France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Sunday the situation in the region remained "very unfavourable" and the wildfire was "moving erratically towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area".
In the Gironde region, the rescue effort involves 2,500 firefighters, including a Swiss team, 1,500 military personnel and almost 1,200 police and gendarmes, who are carrying out evacuations and helping with rescue and securing operations
Dry vegetation and brisk winds are causing the fire to spread, with 60km (37 miles) of the A63 motorway, which leads to Spain, having been closed.
The final stage of the Tour de France, taking place in Paris on Sunday, has been shortened from 133km to 89km (from 82 miles to 55) to allow security forces to be redeployed to the firefighting effort.

AI Companies Are Buying Antique Books, Ingesting Their Contents to Train Models, and Then Destroying Them at Incredible Scale

Traditionally, books have been good for two things: reading, and looking nice on a shelf.
But AI companies are interested in neither.
To those building large language models,books are nothing more than fodder to be devoured en masse before being spit out like fishbone. Often, they’re happy to use digital books —or even better, pirated digital books, as Meta has been accused of doing, and as Anthropic was forced to pay a $1.5 billion settlement to authorsfor also doing.
But many companies, including Anthropic,have turned to ingesting physical books instead, which they can buy countless used copies of on the cheap. According to the settled lawsuit, Anthropic used a hydraulic powered cutting machine to neatly remove the pages from the books it procured from book resellers and then scanned them using industrial-grade imaging equipment. In other words, it was literally ripping off authors’ books to train its AI.==
This process tookadvantage of a legal concept known as first-sale doctrine,which allows a buyer to do what they want with a purchase without the original copyright holder’s say-so. And since Anthropic was turning the original physical texts into digital ones — rather than redistributing them as new copies —a judge found this to be “transformative,” and therefore protected by fair use.
Now, as 404 Media reports, this practice has become prevalent enough that even well-established book sellers are looking to cash in on the AI boom. One called ISBNdb, which boasts the “world’s largest book database,” extolls that the “world’s best AI training data is setting on a shelf,” upholding these physical texts as uncorrupted by shoddy AI writing that’s already polluted so much of the internet (and indeed, newer books).
“Print books from the pre-LLM era are structurally guaranteed to be free of this contamination. That alone is a significant advantage,” it explains in an article on its website, as quoted by 404. “Physical books published before this date [pre-2022] are structurally clean of modern poisoning tools.”
Once focused on helping libraries, distributors, and book shops find and sell books, ISBNdb now helps AI companies bulk-buy anywhere between 1,000 to one million books per order, according to 404.
As an added bonus, it also promisesAI companies that it’ll keep their purchases under wraps — nobody wants to end up in the spotlight like Anthropic and Meta, obviously — while clearly sounding aware about how incredibly shady the practice sounds.
“The optics problem is real,” ISBNdb’s site says.“‘AI company destroys two million books’ is not a headline that generates sympathy.”
One small book seller said that in April, he suddenly went from selling no more than 20 books a week to hundreds, and he’s almost certain that the customers are AI labs, noting the random selection of the books and how they all have ISBNs.He added that his inventory is full with rare and out of print books, meaning that an AI company could be destroying some of the few remaining copies that can be found.
“I personally have mixed feelings about all of this,” the bookseller told 404. “It benefits me financially as well as by clearing out old inventory that is otherwise unlikely to sell. I’ve been well-suited for these sales with inventory from overseas and foreign language books. On the other hand,I don’t like the end-use, and I don’t like that uncommon books are being pulped.”
More antique books may be endangered. 404 noted how rare booksellers in the Netherlands are being inundated with bulk purchases they believe are being made by AI companies, though they can’t know for sure.
Similar suspicions are being felt all throughout the industry.Services like ISBNdb facilitate these bulk orders, keeping the AI buyers anonymous as promised. There may be strong hints thats a bulk order is for an AI lab, but booksellers can, for the most part, merely speculate.

A bright object seen streaking across the Canterbury sky has been identified as a meteor, while another unusual orange streak photographed around the same time was a contrail.
People across Canterbury contacted chrislynchmedia.com on Sunday evening after spotting a bright object moving through the sky, with photographs showing different streaks above the region.
One image captured over the Port Hills showed a bright object with an orange trail moving across the sky.
Steve Wyn Harris, a citizen scientist from Fireballs Aotearoa, which tracks meteors and meteorites across New Zealand, said the object photographed over the Port Hills was a meteor.
“We now know there was a fireball meteor which fell out to sea off the East coast of Canterbury at 5.51pm.”
However, he said a separate photograph showing a long, wavy orange streak while looking west was a contrail.
“The fireball at 5.51pm on the 26th July was seen by a good number of eyewitnesses in Canterbury, east of Christchurch and likely out at sea given we are yet to hear of anyone hearing a sonic boom which indicates the event is close to the witness,” Wyn Harris said.
“It was just too early for our camera network to be recording as they come on automatically when it gets a bit darker.
“Anyone with security camera, dashcam or weather cameras in Canterbury facing east should check the footage between 5.50 and 5.52pm and report to FireballsAotearoa@gmail.com if they have captured this fireball.
“A fireball is a large meteor which in turn are also known as ‘shooting stars’.
“On average, New Zealand has three to four fireballs large enough to drop a meteorite onto the ground although they can be quite small.
“In March 2024, the Fireballs Aotearoa camera network detected a fireball that we calculated might have dropped a meteorite onto the ground near Tekapo.
“We organised a search and found it within 30 minutes.
“The Takapō Meteorite was subsequently confirmed as NZ’s 10th recognised meteorite and is now on display in Tūhura Otago Museum.”
The distinction explains why photographs sent to chrislynchmedia.com appeared to show different shapes in the sky.
The Port Hills image showed a much more concentrated bright object and trail, while the western image showed a longer, twisting orange formation.
The sightings prompted significant interest across Canterbury, with dozens of people contacting chrislynchmedia.com after seeing unusual activity in the evening sky.
Christchurch resident Robert Wells reported seeing what he described as an “awesome shooting star” moving towards the Port Hills.
“It was really low,” he told chrislynchmedia.com.
“It had a bright green tail and orange ball, couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

Democratic Socialists Are Winning Big. Now They Want Action
The Democratic Socialists of America, after a string of election victories in New York, is eager to tax the rich and enact anti-Israel policies.

On a sticky evening in July, leaders of the surging democratic socialist movement in New York City jumped onto Zoom to begin crafting the next phase of their campaign.
Democratic socialist candidates had just toppled five incumbents, capturing two House primaries in the city and a handful more in state legislative races. But with an off-cycle election year ahead, leaders in the city’s chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America were shifting their focus from winning votes to changing policy.
The group’s next order of business, its members agreed in the nearly hourlong Zoom, is topressure Gov. Kathy Hochul, a centrist Democrat, to raise income taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkerswhen the state Legislature convenes in Albany in January.
The group had failed to persuade Ms. Hochul to do so earlier this year,settling instead for a much more limited tax on multimillion-dollar second homes in New York City. But with its influence on the rise, the group believes that a broader tax-the-rich campaign may succeed next year, despite Ms. Hochul’s continued resistance.
“We brought the fight to Hochul to tax the rich last session when we had only nine socialists in the State Legislature,” Gustavo Gordillo, the co-leader of New York City’s D.S.A. chapter, said in an interview. “This cycle, our forces will be almost doubled, and there’s a whole new crew of progressive legislators who are going to demand what New Yorkers want, which is for Hochul to tax the rich.”
Since Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral primary win last year, the New York City D.S.A. chapter, active since the 1980s, said it has added more than 7,000 members. Its current membership of roughly 15,000 is spread across the city, often concentrated in gentrified pockets of Brooklyn and Queens (the so-called Commie Corridor), along with Upper Manhattan.
As the organization matures, it is confronting how to chart its path forward. Some members are laser-focused on drafting their most prominent political ally — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — to run for president in 2028, sometimes putting them at odds with their national brethren. Others are pushing for a more expansive policy agenda, including a renewed focus on public safety, condemning Israel’s military actions through legislation and considering a public takeover of its largest utility company.
The city’s D.S.A. arm has 14 working groups focused on policy goals, but it has so far trained its focus on selecting political candidates and winning elections. Knocking on doors and building energy for elections have tended to be more central to the organization than in-the-weeds policy analysis.
“The organization feels that the sky’s the limit in New York City,” said Asad Dandia, the Brooklyn borough historian and a D.S.A. member. “There’s an understanding that D.S.A. has emerged as one of the major political players in New York City, and arguably the most powerful political organization in the five boroughs.”
Members of the D.S.A. will be making a renewed push to pass the “Not on Our Dime” bill, which would strip New York nonprofits of their tax-exempt status if their funds are used to support Israeli settlement activity. They are also trying to persuade lawmakers to introduce a bill that would penalize airlines that facilitate arms shipments to Israel from Kennedy International Airport. The chapter has also talked about increasing its focus on climate and energy — issues that can be difficult to mobilize voters around, though they have felt more urgent in a summer of heat waves and wildfires.
D.S.A. is part of a coalition of advocacy groups that is pushing for the state to build enough public renewable energy to power 12 million households.
