Democratic Socialists Are Winning Big. Now They Want Action

The Democratic Socialists of America, after a string of election victories in New York, is eager to tax the rich and enact anti-Israel policies.

On a sticky evening in July, leaders of the surging democratic socialist movement in New York City jumped onto Zoom to begin crafting the next phase of their campaign.

Democratic socialist candidates had just toppled five incumbents, capturing two House primaries in the city and a handful more in state legislative races. But with an off-cycle election year ahead, leaders in the city’s chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America were shifting their focus from winning votes to changing policy.

The group’s next order of business, its members agreed in the nearly hourlong Zoom, is topressure Gov. Kathy Hochul, a centrist Democrat, to raise income taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkerswhen the state Legislature convenes in Albany in January.

The group had failed to persuade Ms. Hochul to do so earlier this year,settling instead for a much more limited tax on multimillion-dollar second homes in New York City. But with its influence on the rise, the group believes that a broader tax-the-rich campaign may succeed next year, despite Ms. Hochul’s continued resistance.

“We brought the fight to Hochul to tax the rich last session when we had only nine socialists in the State Legislature,” Gustavo Gordillo, the co-leader of New York City’s D.S.A. chapter, said in an interview. “This cycle, our forces will be almost doubled, and there’s a whole new crew of progressive legislators who are going to demand what New Yorkers want, which is for Hochul to tax the rich.”

Since Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral primary win last year, the New York City D.S.A. chapter, active since the 1980s, said it has added more than 7,000 members. Its current membership of roughly 15,000 is spread across the city, often concentrated in gentrified pockets of Brooklyn and Queens (the so-called Commie Corridor), along with Upper Manhattan.

As the organization matures, it is confronting how to chart its path forward. Some members are laser-focused on drafting their most prominent political ally — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — to run for president in 2028, sometimes putting them at odds with their national brethren. Others are pushing for a more expansive policy agenda, including a renewed focus on public safety, condemning Israel’s military actions through legislation and considering a public takeover of its largest utility company.

The city’s D.S.A. arm has 14 working groups focused on policy goals, but it has so far trained its focus on selecting political candidates and winning elections. Knocking on doors and building energy for elections have tended to be more central to the organization than in-the-weeds policy analysis.

“The organization feels that the sky’s the limit in New York City,” said Asad Dandia, the Brooklyn borough historian and a D.S.A. member. “There’s an understanding that D.S.A. has emerged as one of the major political players in New York City, and arguably the most powerful political organization in the five boroughs.”

Members of the D.S.A. will be making a renewed push to pass the “Not on Our Dime” bill, which would strip New York nonprofits of their tax-exempt status if their funds are used to support Israeli settlement activity. They are also trying to persuade lawmakers to introduce a bill that would penalize airlines that facilitate arms shipments to Israel from Kennedy International Airport. The chapter has also talked about increasing its focus on climate and energy — issues that can be difficult to mobilize voters around, though they have felt more urgent in a summer of heat waves and wildfires.

D.S.A. is part of a coalition of advocacy groups that is pushing for the state to build enough public renewable energy to power 12 million households. Far more ambitiously, members of the coalition have discussed pushing either the state or city to step in and take over Con Edison, with the aim of lowering utility bills and making the case that the public sector ought to run the grid, not the private sector. Such a plan would face major logistical and financial hurdles and is unlikely to get Ms. Hochul’s support.

During their recent planning meeting, leaders spoke at length about how to use the governor’s promises to expand free and low-cost child care statewide as a way to pressure the governor to raise taxes on the wealthy.

“She’s already committed to a major child care program, which is unfunded at this point,” Mr. Gordillo said in the interview. “It would be a huge embarrassment for her not to raise taxes on the rich in order to fund the program she helped to start.”

Ms. Hochul, for her part, has found opportunities to partner with Mr. Mamdani on initiatives big and small, from child care to the World Cup to the so-called pied-à-terre tax. But as she faces re-election in November, she has also embraced the role of playing the moderate foil to Mr. Mamdani and his progressive base, knowing that the city relies on Albany to fund the new administration’s expansive agenda.

“Governor Hochul has been focused on lowering costs for New Yorkers and making it easier for both businesses and residents to stay in our state,” her spokesman, Anthony Hogrebe, said. “She does not believe in raising taxes for the sake of raising taxes, and has only considered new revenue raisers when absolutely needed to solve real problems. The governor makes decisions based on what’s best for New Yorkers, and no amount of political pressure can change that.”

In the early months of his administration, Mr. Mamdani has sought to strike a conciliatory tone with the governor. He endorsed her re-election in early February, which infuriated some democratic socialists. When progressive groups in New York staged a major “Tax the Rich” rally in Albany, busing hundreds of people from the city, Mr. Mamdani privately told organizers that he planned to skip the event.

Democratic socialists have tended to give the mayor a pass. But now, in private conversations, some are analyzing whether the mayor can play a more active role in pushing their priorities, given that he is more firmly established inside City Hall.

Many members of Mr. Mamdani’s progressive base remain opposed to his police commissioner, Jessica Tisch. While her appointment spurred frustrated messages in chapter group chats, D.S.A. members have done little to push Mr. Mamdani to drop her. Recent primaries demonstrated that democratic socialists in New York City are frustrated by economic inequality, Israel and President Trump’s immigration enforcement tactics — but its leaders have been a lot more muted around public safety reforms.

Mr. Mamdani has prioritized improving his affordability agenda and condemning Israel’s military actions, while keeping the issue of police reform at a distance. The D.S.A. recently pressured him, successfully, to scrap his plans to hire another 580 police officers and is pushing him to expand the new Office of Community Safety, which would divert certain 911 calls from police officers to clinicians.

Mr. Mamdani had promised to create a larger Department of Community Safety that would have a $1.1 billion budget, but so far the endeavor is far more modest — a mayoral office with a $270 million budget, most of which is money diverted from existing programs. The operation tasked with handling the 911 calls — the heart of the whole project — is getting a mere $35 million.

Tiffany Cabán, a city councilwoman and member of the D.S.A. who describes herself as a “hard-core abolitionist,” said she wanted the mayor to push the Police Department to cease its increased focus on enforcement of low-level crimes and build out the Office of Community Safety. But she acknowledged that drawing in voters with an anti-policing agenda remains a challenge.

“We’ve seen a lot of movement around Palestinian liberation, on antiwar organizing; we’ve seen a lot of movement around tax the rich,” Ms. Cabán said. “But policing is just hard.”

As the influence of the D.S.A. grows, so, too, does the volume of its critics. One persistent area of concern is how the organization addresses racial inequality, a matter that was highlighted this week when a Black Democratic leader, Donovan Richards, invoked an accusation of “white supremacy” on X. The comment, directed at the D.S.A. in response to discourse around a New York Times story on the group, was plastered on the cover of the right-leaning New York Post and was being circulated by critics of the organization.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, the veteran civil rights leader, argued that the D.S.A. should fine-tune its focus on affordability by addressing racial disparities, rather than treating all types of financial struggle the same. Mr. Sharpton applauded the group’s recent string of victories and said they “raise expectations” for the organization.

“There is a race gap in affordability. They’ve got to deal with more than class, and also deal with race,” Mr. Sharpton said. “If they do not, then they run the risk of having some people in the Black community come back at them, saying you’re ignoring race.”

A poll of 719 likely New York State voters, conducted in May by the firm Data for Progress, found the D.S.A. is unpopular with 42 percent of those who responded, and popular with 30 percent.

Jay Jacobs, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said he appreciated the D.S.A.’s commitment to affordability, but he questioned some of the group’s tactics and policy goals. He argued that their focus on taking down centrist Democrats wasn’t helping in the broader effort to flip Republican-held seats and win back Congress.

“Too often they look at moderate Democrats as the greater enemy than Republicans,” Mr. Jacobs said. “They don’t appeal to people in the middle. Most Americans are moderates.”

Approximately 75,000 noncitizens are summoned for jury duty in the Garden State every year, according to newly disclosed figures from the New Jersey judiciary.

The revelation comes as state officials are already scrambling to explain how thousands of self-identified noncitizens were improperly added to New Jersey’s voter rolls and how hundreds reportedly cast ballots.

The New Jersey Globe reported that New Jersey processes more than one million jury summonses annually using records randomly selected from three state agencies: the Division of Elections, the Division of Taxation, and the Motor Vehicle Commission.

Pete McAleer, a spokesman for the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, said roughly 20% of respondents report that they fail to meet at least one statutory eligibility requirement.

Approximately one-quarter of those disqualifications,an average of roughly 75,000 people annually over the past three years, were because the recipient was not a United States citizen.

Under New Jersey law, only American citizens are eligible to serve on juries.

The judiciary insists safeguards are in place to stop noncitizens from actually serving.

“Prospective jurors are asked about their citizenship and other qualifications when they complete the mandatory juror qualification questionnaire,” McAleer told the New Jersey Globe.

“Those who advance are reminded of the eligibility requirements during jury orientation and are directly questioned about their citizenship during jury selection by the judge and, as permitted, the attorneys,” he added.

Officials say there is no evidence that noncitizens have served on juries since the additional safeguards were implemented.

But that does not explain why approximately 75,000 noncitizens are being swept into the jury-summons process every year.

It also raises serious questions about the reliability of government databases used to administer elections and jury selection.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Democrat Governor Mikie Sherrill recently admitted that a “serious software error” in the state’s motor-vehicle system resulted in approximately 6,600 people who explicitly indicated they were not American citizens being registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.

According to Sherrill, fewer than 400 of those improperly registered individuals subsequently voted.

The Justice Department has since opened an investigation into the scandal.

Sherrill attempted to blame IDEMIA, the software contractorthat transmits voter-registration information collected by the Motor Vehicle Commission.

ButIDEMIA fired back, explaining that it merely transmitted the applications and that New Jersey’s own Division of Elections was responsible for reviewing the information and determining voter eligibility.

“Information submitted by IDEMIA must still be validated and adjudicated by the Division of Elections,” the company said, as The Gateway Pundit reported.

The jury duty numbers explode the scope of the same underlying failure. The same polluted government databases that dumped noncitizens onto the voter rolls are feeding the jury pools.

Voting has no equivalent real-time citizenship verification. Automatic voter registration throughthe Motor Vehicle Commission simply trusts the system, a system that has repeatedly proven it cannot distinguish a citizen from a noncitizen.

"Electron type neutrinos can take a neutron, one of the three basic parts of an atom, and transform it into the other two, a proton and electron. But muon type neutrinos cannot do this.

So, the conversion of neutrino flavors can alter how many neutrons are available in the system, which directly impacts the creation of heavy metals and rare earth elements.

There are still many lingering questions about the cosmic origin of these important elements, and we found that accounting for neutrino mixing could increase element production by as much as a factor of 10."

The researchers also found that neutrino mixing influenced the amount and composition of material ejected during the merger.

This could affect the electromagnetic signals, including X-rays and gamma rays, and possibly the gravitational waves produced by these events.

"In our simulations, neutrino mixing impacted the electromagnetic emissions from neutron star mergers and possibly the gravitational waves as well," Radice said.

"With cutting-edge detectors like LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA and their next generation counterparts, such as the proposed Cosmic Explorer observatory that could start operations in the 2030s, astronomers are poised to detect gravitational waves more often than we have before.

Better understanding how these emissions are created from neutron star mergers will help us interpret future observations."

The LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) mission is a global network of gravitational-wave observatories that detect ripples in space-time caused by events such as merging black holes and neutron stars.

Through NASA's General Coordinates Network (GCN), LVK quickly shares alerts and sky maps with astronomers worldwide, enabling rapid follow-up observations and advancing the study of the dynamic universe.

Despite the findings, the researchers said many aspects of neutrino transformations are still not fully understood. "There's still a lot we don't know about the theoretical physics of these neutrino transformations," Qiu said.

"As theoretical particle physics continues to advance, we can greatly improve our simulations. What remains uncertain is where and how these transformations occur in neutron star mergers.

Our current understanding suggests they are very likely, and our simulations show that, if they take place, they can have major effects, making it important to include them in future models and analyses."

The team said the simulation framework developed for the study can now be used by other researchers to further investigate neutrino flavor transformations and their role in neutron star mergers.

"Neutron star mergers function like cosmic laboratories, providing important insights into extreme physics that we can't replicate safely on Earth," Radice said.

But some of the Raptor engines failed to restart for the landing burn, and the booster fell into the ocean at high speed. SpaceX also had trouble with the booster splashdown on the last flight in May.

Friday’s flight showed some progress, but engineers have more work to do on recovering this version the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX previously recovered and re-flew Super Heavy boosters two times with the Starship Version 2 design, but not with Version 3.

“The booster successfully completed the high thrust portion of the boostback burn with all 33 engines, the first time with a Super Heavy V3, before ending the burn early,” SpaceX officials wrote in an update on the company’s website.

Success in space

Starship continued accelerating into space as the Super Heavy booster descended toward the Gulf, firing its six engines more than five minutes before beginning a half-hour coast over the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and South Africa.

A few minutes after engine shutdown, Starship opened its payload bay door and started deploying a stack of 20 Starlink satellites. The satellites are the first of SpaceX’s upgraded Starlink V3 model, with significant improvements in throughput and power.

They are also larger and heavier than Starlink V2s, meaning they will not fit on SpaceX’s smaller, workhorse Falcon 9 rocket.

Starship released the Starlink V3s using its Pez-like deployer, tossing them overboard through a slit-like opening on the side of the spacecraft. The flat-panel satellites did not stay in space for long.

They flew on the same arcing suborbital trajectory as Starship, and were designed to burn up as they fell back into the atmosphere less than an hour after launch.

In little time, SpaceX ground teams established contact with each of the satellites through radio and laser communication links, and “downloaded key telemetry” before their fiery demise.

This provided engineers with their first look at the performance of Starlink V3s in space.

With the satellite deployments complete, attention turned to a brief restart of one of the ship’s Raptor engines, something engineers forewent on the last flight.

The burn lasted approximately 14 seconds, and was visible to observers in South Africa. SpaceX hailed the demonstration as “core capability for future orbital missions.” Gravity then pulled Starship back to Earth.

The next steps for Starship are getting to orbit and returning the ship to the launch site.

Those achievements will give SpaceX the capability to begin launching operational Starlink V3 satellites, unlocking higher-speed direct-to-device connectivity for consumers and the US military, and the revenue to go along with it.

For NASA, an orbital flight puts SpaceX on a path toward orbital refueling. This demonstration is vital for any Starship flight beyond low-Earth orbit, including missions to the Moon in support of NASA’s Artemis program.

NASA is working with SpaceX and Blue Origin to develop human-rated versions of Starship and the Blue Moon lander to ferry astronauts to and from the lunar surface.

“Excited for what will be learned from this mission,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman wrote on X after the launch of Flight 13. “When Starship comes online, its capabilities will be game-changing, not least of which will be ensuring we never give up the Moon again!”

SpaceX has one active launch pad in Texas, and a second Starship pad undergoing renovations there. Two Starship launch sites are under construction at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The orbital refueling demonstration will include two Starship launches, allowing the vehicles to rendezvous and dock with one another in orbit. One ship will then transfer methane and liquid oxygen propellants to the other through automated couplers.

Leftists Seethe as Ella Langley’s Chart-Topping Country Song Makes History

Country music superstar Ella Langley suddenly finds herself in the company of legends.

But through no fault of her own, this development has apparently triggered the world’s most miserable people: Online liberals.

Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” held onto the No. 1 spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 for the 14th-consecutive week, tying a record previously shared by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey for non-holiday music andsending online liberals into fits of apoplexy. Langley, see, is apparently suspected of harboring conservative views.

On Instagram, the 27-year-old Langley called her achievement “insane,” according to Fox News. [grafs 2-3]

But it’s the leftist reaction that’s truly crazy.

For one thing,her chart-topping juggernaut of a song sounds … well … like a typical country song.

Of course, Langley’s husky vocals bring something special to it. But this is not like Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North of Richmond” or Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” — 2023 hits that had political and economic messages.

“Choosin’ Texas” has no political overtones at all.

Instead, Langley — an Alabama native — sings in the voice of a woman from Tennessee who realizes that her man’s heart lies with a Texas woman. Readers may watch the song’s video below.

Despite its conventional theme, that song, beautifully sung, has made history. For comparison’s sake, Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” sits in second place on this week’s Hot 100 Chart.

Who sits in third place? You guessed it: Langley with “Be Her.” And incredibly, the country music superstar’s “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” a duet with Morgan Wallen, is at No. 7 this week.

So it’s Langley’s overall work, as opposed to the unique popularity of one song or another, that appears to be driving her success. But why? One user on the social media platform X has a theory.

“The visceral reaction from the Left over Ella Langley is not complicated. They hate Whites, they hate beauty, they hate anything wholesome, and they especially hate America because it is all of those things. Langley represents something they thought they killed,” the user wrote.

Older men, to be clear, probably have no business writing about contemporary music. After all, I confess that until today I had never heard of Langley.

The exercise, however, has not been in vain, for anything that irritates liberals is, by definition, a good thing.

And that means that Langley has earned herself a new fan.
